I have to get this place 5 stars for customer service because I was here last week with a friend for dinner, and I totally left my little envelope with money behind- $30 dollars and some change if you must know. I had no idea I had left it behind till I was 30 mins out of the restaurant and down the street at the bar.  I walked back, and oh my goooooooooooodness! I asked the waiter if he saw a envelope with money in it, and he said he kept it on the side of the registers for me! WOW! That was so honest, considerate, and compassionate of the waiter to do that! Anyone else, would take it in a heart beat. I know, it's only $30 dollars, but people aren't very honest these days, and it's sad.  I'm just so happy and thankful that the waiter was so gracious to do that for me. 5 STARTS to this place for having a honest staff, and especially for have that wonderful waiter work for them- Not sure what his name was, but he had long hair in a pony tail :)

4 stars overall because the sushi here was ok...,, but the service was friendly and quick.  Sushi guys were nice.  Spicy tuna and spicy scallop was so-so.  Spider roll and volcano roll was ok.  Sake was good. I've definitely had better on the sushi end, but I wouldn't mind coming back again :)

Thank you Sapporo sushi for having a great and honest staff!

Felt like sushi on Friday night and felt like going to a place that felt like home. We've been to the other sushi places a lot lately but this time all I wanted was Sapporo.

I was a little caught off guard when we entered and the place didn't look like the restaurant I've been to a million times. But it was certainly nice to see the places changing with the times and upgrading to compete with the other sushi places that have recently hit OB.  The décor looks nice and just like every other sushi joint in San Diego. Can't decide if that's a good or bad thing.

The staff and servers are beyond superb. Efficient, attentive, and friendly. The owner is amazing. I love that she makes a presence  at every table, pitches in in all aspects of the restaurant, and makes you feel as if she really wants you to enjoy your time there and your dinner.

Unfortunately the sushi menu is boring. Same old rolls, nothing imaginative or new. Our dinner consisted of mostly rolls that were on special because of it. We had the Tomato Roll and Protein Roll and both were amazing! Not sure why they wouldn't add them to the main menu or at least let the chef's add some innovative and fresh rolls. I think it would really make this place top notch!

We'll be back for the service and the nigori sake on tap and to try the rest of the special rolls. But when I'm done trying those rolls, it may be a while till I'm back again.

With a new competitor moving in one block over, I felt I had to chime in to support the local sushi place that has been doing it better for years.

Sopporo is delicious. Is it the best sushi in San Diego? No. But if you're in OB and you want sushi, it's definitely the best we've got. The quality of the fish is significantly higher than the decor would suggest (even though they recently got a face lift, and look very nice). The rolls, sushi, and entrees are delicious. The staff is cool, and the crazy old Japanese owner lady always goes the extra mile to make sure everyone's enjoying themselves.

There is definitely a minimum quality threshold when it comes to raw fish. If it's gross, I don't care if they're giving it away for free - the fish has to be good. And Sopporo clears that bar with plenty of room to spare, giving it a 7/10 for quality but a 10/10 for value.

NEVER AGAIN.  This is hands down the worst sushi restaurant that my husband and I have ever been to.  We have been here three times (once it just the two of us, and the other two times we felt obligated to go because we were with a group).  The only good thing I've ever eaten here is the ahi poke.  But overall, the fish is scary, scary, scary.  We've always left at least half of our meal on the plate because it was inedible.  The food is expensive, and the rolls are very small and uninteresting.  YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.  If you want good sushi in OB, go to OB Sushi Sushi or The Joint.

This is in our neighborhood and we go fairly often.  For my boyfriend and I to have about four rolls including specialty rolls, appetizers, sake, and beer, the bill is usually around 40-50 bucks. Not bad at all price-wise! I have never ordered a roll I dont like and I love going to a place that is so small that we are always remembered by the hostess and the servers. Definitely a great place to eat!!

I really like this place.  (Let me add, I am also bias to places in OB because I can access them by merely walking a few blocks ....)

With that said, I really love Sapporo because it fits the vernacular.  There's really nothing special or great about this place, it's just conveniently located and has pretty good food.  I always get the vegetarian sushi - which never disappoints.  They have fair prices, and the staff is friendly.  No complaints.

On a side note, don't order anything with Tuna.  It's rarely fresh.  If you stay away from the tuna, your experience at Sapporo should be A-Ok.

I love Sapporo. My sweetie and I go about once a week for the calamari app and hamachi sashimi. The fish is very fresh! Hot sake and pear cider are a must have for me, and I never have to wait more than a moment for a refill.
This is basic, good quality sushi. Consistency goes a long way for me.
Also, we were there last night and got to try one of their new dinner plates. We shared the fried oyster/shrimp dinner and it was very good. I think five of each (we ate them pretty fast!) along with miso, salad, a scoop of rice, and potato salad. The potato salad was awesome!
We are always greeted with smiles and the service is great. Love catching up with the owner for a few minutes before the food comes.
Looking forward to trying the steak dinner next time!

    A decent spot.
Ambiance leaves little to be desired.
    Service is nothing noteworthy.
Sushi is good quality (for the price).

    Happy Hour is daily, 4-6PM.
Standard sushi joint selections, no unique plates.

Ordered takeout from Sapporo the other night, and we were pleased with the food! They have nice veggie sushi, and it's pretty inexpensive. I think for 2 avo rolls, 2 cucumber rolls & a large veggie roll it was 24ish? It MORE than fed my husband and me, and the lovely owner lady gave us some edamame since I had to wait a little bit on the order (which I didn't mind at all!) :) So sweet! She is adorable, too, and gave me tips on eating sushi, etc. I loved it. Such a nice family-run establishment that I can definitely see visiting again in the near future. Thanks, Sapporo :)

Their sushi is nothing special nor unique. All the rolls I usually order at sushi contained NOTHING the same here. I was quite upset how different their version of standard rolls are.

I ended up getting a salmon combo box with california rolls, salad, soup, and tempura. My food was warm-ish but the dressing on the salad was yummy.  Uncomfortably small tables too.

    Not impressed whatsoever.

Recently enjoyed some Sushi at Sapporo, and it was okay, It was definitely not my favorite sushi, but it was passable. The price is what keeps e coming back for more sushi. Three dollars and change for a California roll, not bad.

Also they carry one of my favorite unfiltered Sakes, Nigori. If you enjoy unfiltered Sake you know this is one of the cheaper, but still quite tasty.

The atmosphere is casual and the restaurant is pretty compact. The service was great, which is a little unusual for a sushi joint of this size. I will be coming back, it is just not at the top of my list.

Come here often, partly because my GF and I can walk from home. The service is great, and the sushi is also great. Definitely not as great as let say sushi Ota and/or Hane sushi,  which are on a completely different level, they are also much more expensive. I love to come here and for dinner and drinks, its small, nice and cozy i guess. Good prices good sushi good service!! Cinco estrellas ("five stars" for all you non spanish speakers)

Went to Sapporo again this past weekend with the GF and my neighbor and really enjoyed it.

Had their sashimi for the first time and it was really good, BIG pieces and really fresh. Also, we got the mixed sashimi plate, which I always hesitate on because I get kinda disappointed when it is octopus and weird stuff, but not the case here... Tuna, Salmon, Albacore. and I think Yellowfin... Awesome! Again I will say it was really fresh tasting. My GF doesn't even like fish and she was eating up the sashimi. We came to realize she didn't like cooked fish.

We got several rolls as we always do and they did not disappoint.  Prices were great with several options around $5.

Good Sushi, Decent Price. I like the way they prepare their scallop nigiri. Its a typical sushi joint, nothing mind blowing but very good. The Tuna Tataki I got was very delicious and very good portions compared to others Ive seen.

The rolls were just ok in my book. I tend to stick to the Sashimi and Nigiri unless I know the chef because for me, i dont like typical run of the mill rolls. Gotta be something unique and special to entice me on those.

My only suggestion... make your quail egg shooters in the shot glass, not the shell, its kinda weird and i didnt quite catch the appeal.

Other than that... great place to eat, good food, good service, right on the beach, cant beat it.

Worst sushi restaurant EVER in my life..! Teriyaki sauce was water down, and chicken & beef was rubbery& tainted taste. Fish was not fresh, rice was hard, roll was just bad. We ordered dynamite roll, and it was just small California roll with pea size dynamite sauce on top of California and it was baked and rice was hard to chew on.
We ended up having only one bite of beef because we realized that the beef is either really old or rotten. It smelled really bad and texture was really rubbery( tasted rubbery too)
I normally never Ever leave this bad of review but I felt the need for giving this warning to other yelpers.

I ran into this sushi joint while a friend and  were going fishing @ the pier in OB.
We were a bit hungry and just wanted to grab some munchies at a liquor store down the street as we wanted to go fishing but somehow we ended up just walking into Sapporo and eating here :P

I was very impressed with the service we got immediately.  Our host was very kind and provided some of the best hospitality I've had in town.  She even poured out the soy sauce for us and unfolded our napkins onto our lap.  It appeared she was the manager or maybe even the owner.

I ordered surf clam, red snapper and a rainbow roll.  The sushi tasted ok, not the best but not bad.  I guess since we came like 5 mins before they were to close that we got what was left over.

Anyways, I would come here again whenever I am in OB and crave for sushi just for the great customer service this place has!

There's a little-known scientific theorem I have developed known as "The Drunk A-hole Quotient". This is the limit at which you are allowed to act like a drunk a-hole within a certain restaurant before getting thrown out. At Sapporo, the Drunk A-hole Quotient is extremely high. This means that you are more than welcome to down 5 sake bombs and start re-enacting scenes from "Three Ninjas" on any given night. The little owner lady is extremely accommodating in this regard; I guess she has gotten used to the serving the freaks of OB.

Sapporo is the definition of quaint. After you come here, you might say, "Ah, that was nice." or if you've had too many sake bombs you might say "WHEEEEWWWW. LET'S FUCKING PARTY!" It doesn't really matter because either way you've had a great experience. It's nothing memorable aside from some kitschy Asian stuff on the walls (samurai paintings ftw), but I think this place prides itself on being a hole in the wall. The service is brisk, the sushi is fresh, and the price is economical.

So if you want to go somewhere trendy to impress your date, go to Harney sushi. If you've already been sucked into the soul-draining abyss of a long-term  relationship, Sapporo is a more practical option.

Oh how I wish I could give my neighborhood sushi dive 5 stars, but I would be betraying my sushi snobbery if I did so. Not a bad place, no food poisoning, but nothing to write home about.

The rolls are pretty big, and it's a good deal for your money. And great because if you live in OB you can have some sushi bombs and walk your ass home.

But I love, LOVE, raw fish. And it was just ok. I love moaning and groaning my way through a meal, and that didn't happen this time.

The sushi is fresh, seriously, no worries there. But I wish it melted in your mouth, like butta, the way good sushi is meant to do.

On the up though, good service, and lots of eye candy while you're eating.

Good California rolls. Smooth sake. Efficient service.

Sapporo should have a star deducted because the rice in the rolls did not hold together for long. HOWEVER, the service from 'Pickle' (owner/manager/server I have no idea) was unbelievable. I laughed so hard I almost choked.

W came here after coming back from mexico, and were killing time waiting for our plane.

The sushimi was awesome and fresh, the part of the volcano roll I had was good too.  I loved the beansprout dish that was a side of the sashimi, really tasty...  Miso was so-so & the salad was kinda blah.

Service was slooooooow - there was us, and one other table when we came in, and it dragged.   As we were leaving business was picking up, which makes me wonder how long they waited?

    prices were VERY reasonable.

I wish this place was a five star because I live very close to Newport ave in Ocean Beach. But hey we can't have ALL the best things in Ocean Beach!

Food is good but middle of the road. I don't think it's great, but I don't hate it either. If I am feeling lazy and don't want to put away the beach cruiser for the car keys, but MUST have sushi. Then this is the place I go. But it's because I am close.
Prices are reasonable though and servers are generally pretty cool, but sometimes slow. This happens sometimes, not always, but sometimes in Ocean Beach in general. (Thank you medical Marijuana!) Just kidding don't hate mail me!

Like I said I am a stickler for quality and this is mediocre as far as I am concerned.
If you want GREAT sushi and don't mind paying for it. Make the drive to Harney Sushi in Old Town.

I went here twice with some friends who lived in OB and we're good friends of the owners.

It's a decent hole-in-the-wall sushi joint.  Nothing special.  Very generic.

The fish and the amount of choices leave a lot to be desired however.  It was honestly pathetic, almost unbelievable that a menu could be sparesly populated by different choices.  It was like looking out into the desert to count cacti.  Seriously, I've seen more sushi options at Ralphs or Whole Foods.

The fish itself is settles right around tolerable.  It's definitely not high quality stuff here.  For the most part the fish didn't seem to be cut correctly, and the fat stryations were ginormous, and not in the good way.  It was like eating that piece of grizzle on a steak, and while some folks like that, count me out.  Combine this with a lack of selection and the only saving grace for this fish is it's cost (not much) and the service.

If you like to pay for the quality of your food and your low on cash, expect low quality sushi here.  Sure, it'll be prompt and easy on the wallet, but the taste will be a little south of "good" as well.

I'm no Sushi expert but this place is fantastic. I ordered the tepanyaki meal (I know, thats not even sushi) and got a huge tray of food for just $11. There was salmon and noodles, chicken and rice, some sushi rolls, soup (of course) and some other bits and pieces. It was great value for money.

And the really big bottles of Sapporo. I love the big bottles of Sapporo.

I'm not saying you should go all the way over to OB just for this place, but if you're there check it out.

Definitely the best sushi place I've found yet. Sushi bar, restaurant, and full liquor bar right on the beach... IT RULZ.

We were in OB on Prez' Day after getting our Silk Spectre poster from the Watchmen scavenger hunt going on right now for the film, and decided to mosey on down Newport looking for somewhere to eat. Newport Pizza wasn't getting me all Pavlov's Dog this time, so when we came across Sapporo we decided to give it a shot. It was fate.

The first thing that sold me was that they took credit. I, being extremely poor, usually only max out my credit cards and hardly ever have cash. So when places are cash-only, they lose me. We got seated right away as the ambiance of The Smiths was bangin' in the near empty restaurant.

80s music and badass Japanese art created the best atmosphere we could ask for, and after one glance at the menu we settled on two large hot sakes, two large Sapporo beers, gyoza, miso soup, two Philadelphia rolls, two shrimp tempura rolls, an OB roll and a spicy tuna roll. The service was excellent, the sushi was the freshest I've had, and we barely broke $50 for all the hot sake and sushi our little hearts desired.

    Go. Now.

Sapporo is a very neat, simple, and a hole in the wall kind of place to get sushi at.

A friend and I were craving sushi after exploring the Wednesday night OB farmer's market, as we were heading out of the market, we came across Sapporo.

Service was friendly and very fast, menu was very straightforward, the sushi came out great, and everything was priced just right.

This place isn't flashy when compared to most sushi joints around town, however it had a neat vibe, had some interesting people, and was just a great place to sit down, talk, and eat some sushi.

Definitely will come back again next time I'm in the neighborhood.

The Best Sushi in Ocean Beach! um I mean The only Sushi in OB!

OK so its not amazing...and its also not bad and they are on the inexpensive side for sushi. The Mexican Chefs are hommies, really nice and always down for a spanglish conversation at the tiny sushi bar...which is unfortunately located at the entrance where you will have hordes of people walking behind you  at all times which makes you way to paranoid or just plain annoyed to relax...

All in all, decent sushi, bad environment, good price...

My advice: get take out (its cheaper on the specials) walk down to the beach (its about a half block) and relax with your food on the sea wall watching the surfers.

The place was fine if you needed to resolve a sushi craving.  Not a place I would direct people in search of great sushi.  The rolls seemed to have twice or three times the amount of rice on the outside as normal.  If you like rice great but I like all the good stuff inside the roll.

The actual sushi we ordered were normal or slightly large cuts and I would agree the place wasn't a bargain but not outrageous either.

We were visiting for the weekend so I don't know what other choices there were in the OB area but if you need to get some sushi this place will work.

Walking in OB, craving sushi, stumbled upon Sapporo.

I was very pleasantly surprised - it seems a bit grungy and sushi is not something I want to eat in a place I'd describe as grungy. But the sushi was exactly what I wanted. Chalk it up to hunger or craving, but I enjoyed it. Not the best sushi I've ever had, but I will definitely go back.

Solid 3.5 stars. I normally have a hard time writing average reviews because it takes time and effort. I have to be excited or extremely dissapointed to write one. Sapporo deserved a mention because of the really good service I received and excellent prices. Their normal prices are very affordable. The quality and taste of the sushi is better than other cheap places (like niban). I would never compare this kind of place to Sushi Ota. Another plus is it's close to the beach and walking around here could be fun. On the negative (and why it loses 1.5 stars) are the rude bums that walk around and ask you for money. Makes for an uncomfortable walk. The ambiance inside leaves little to be desired as well. I realize they can't really change their location without increasing their prices, but it makes it hard to come to the area as often (alone as a female anyway)
happy hour from 4-6pm. Try the beef yakitori..it was $3/stick during happy hour. It was juicy, tender, and really good.

I liked the sushi here, as it was pretty good.
It gets two stars because it feels really uncomfortable being in there, and I felt rushed. Felt more like PB and less like OB. Just did not have the relaxing atmosphere that I expect when I eat.

Sushi itself is ok, nothing spectacular but not bad either! I actually loved my Philadelphia Roll & the Salmon hand roll - the fish was fresh and tasty & I was pleasantly surprised.
Spicy tuna roll on the other hand was no bueno, the fish wasn't fresh...note to self to never get it again.  Sushi in general a bit too heavy on the rice....
For the price though the place is great! All of the rolls were around $5, not sure if it's just the lunchtime special though...

Stopped by here after the OB Farmer's Market on Wednesday. I'm always up for trying new sushi places as I've still yet to discover my #1 here in San Diego. As you walk in the sushi bar is first on the left, small and quaint. We were seated in a small but comfortable dining room. There is another "bar" bar on one side of the room, but I saw people eating there too. My friend ordered the bagel/philly roll a Saketini and 2 pieces of Uni. I had the Black roll and the tuna poke salad. We each tried each other's selections.

The saketini was ok, nothing special. I tasted mostly sake and very little vodka, kind of a reverse martini, which was fine for me, but those expecting a more traditional vodka flavor will be disappointed. The uni was ok, I'm not a big fan, but I tried it anyway. Strangely enough one piece did taste a little fresher than the other. The bagel/philly roll was the best! I very much enjoyed it, very fresh salmon and with a tiny dip in some ponzu sauce it was perfect. My Black roll was eel and scallop with cucumber. I was going for more of the scallop flavor, but the roll was so covered with eel sauce that the was the only flavor coming through. My poke salad did have some of the freshest tuna I've seen, but it was salty. I couldn't figure out where the salt flavor was coming from. I might try reordering it without whatever sauce they put on it.

All in all, I would definitely return to try it again. It had a good atmosphere and I'll be ordering the bagel/philly roll.

This place is not awesome.  I was here for lunch today, and I was disappointed.  The spicy yellow tail roll is $6.95 and there's nothing good about it.  The waitress commented that the miso soup was very good.  It wasn't!  It was very watered down.  Service was okay, but the whole point of eating at a restaurant is to enjoy the food.

Sat at the bar on Saturday with 2 friends, the lady running the place was very nice and friendly.  They made pretty good sushi, for 60 bucks we got 2 beers, a martini and like 6-7 rolls of different stuff.  Overall it was a pretty good price for what we got.  This place in my opinion has a pretty good selection.  I didnt try any of the rainbow/fro fro rolls that are common all over, just the basic stuff, scallops, yellowtail, tuna, salmon, ect.  They have real alcohol so thats good, not just sake and beer.  I could see myself going back here.

Sat at the sushi bar and you have to have a $10 minimum per seat. The waitress was friendly but just very busy. Our food was OK to the say the least. Nothing really stood out for me. If you're a drinker there's a bar. Check it out...form your own opinion of it, but I can say it was an OK place if you're in the area.
