Review from Roni S.

At first, I thought this restaurant was a joke, but after a day of hard drinking, I opened myself up to the idea of ordering from here. Man, I was missing out the entire time.
I find myself ordering from Sapolo more and more frequently these days, they've lured me in. I used to think Kum Kau had the best dumplings in the neighborhood, but I'm starting to like the ones here even more. Yes, you read the sign right, Spanish and Chinese food. With anything this radically different, expect some concessions when it comes to "authenticity." -

I read about this place from a friend who likes to drink and also from reading from the Yelpites (can't trust anyone else!) so me and my boyfriend drove down. No parking but we found a far away spot after a few minutes of driving.
It's easy to spot this place, especially with the eyesore neon sign on the front of the restaurant. We walked in and seated right away. I ordered General Tso's Shrimp and my boyfriend got the same but chicken. Too bad I haven't taken out my wisdom tooth or I would have actually enjoyed my food since I kept biting the inside of my mouth and making it bleed! But being the food maniac that I am, I still tried to get that shrimp in my belly. It was good, crunchy and tasty. The Shrimp fried rice tasted a bit burned but I aint picky.
They had fried ice cream, which I loveeeee, but it tasted like poop so oh well. I'll come back for the Spanish grub and let's see what happens. Maybe then I'll be rid of that freaken wisdom tooth...
P.S....they add the tip into the check so when you get the check back and you see the line for TIP, don't worry. A big line can be put through it....you've paid for everything chickies. -

I'm beginning to learn Spanish and Asian culture is closer than I may have thought. But I was taught old school if you look Asian and I'm in your establishment I will eat Asian foods. ("When in Rome do as the Romans do") As a result, I've only had Chinese food here. Not the best place but it is up the block from my Aunt's and when we are in a crunch we'll stop here. When I want Spanish food I'll go find a Dominican, Puerto Rican or Mexican establishment.

The meat dumplings and scallion pancakes are delicious. They deliver "adult beverages" if you ask.
Next up, trying the latin food and hard frozen lemonade. Yum. Oh and they deliver far. They have a car. :) score! -

3 seasoned drinkers were rendered drunk by one cocktail each. I couldn't even finish my Mai Thai, for fear that I'd have to go home and pass out instead of going out for the night. Tropical cocktails are my guilty pleasure, and while the atmosphere here leaves something to be desired, it's well worth it to stop in to get a buzz on pretty fast and pay extremely reasonable prices for big, strong drinks and GIGANTIC plates of food.
I ordered the chicken and yellow rice off of the Spanish side of the menu and the leftovers lasted two days, even after myself and my friend dug into the massive bowl at the restaurant. My boyfriend got sesame chicken with broccoli or something and he seemed to enjoy it.
I felt some trepidation walking into a Spanish/Chinese place. How can they do both cuisines justice? Well, I wouldn't say they were the most wonderfully prepared dishes that have ever tantalized my palate, but they managed to at least make the food edible. I left drunk, full of flavorful rice and tender chicken, dismayed by the poor giant fish trapped in a not-so-big tank shaped like a cocktail, and not too broke. -

This place is opened. I order from there last night (10/2/10).
I think it's downright hilarious that the delivery man parked his car halfway down the block and across the street. Did you think you weren't going to have to come to at least my front steps? I'm not walking down the block.
The prices are decent. The delivery speed is alright.
When I placed the order I was even told of a special offer they had where you get a free iced tea with your order. Most places don't automatically tell you about deals so that was a bonus. -

THE BIGGEST RESTAURANT IN THE AREA, claims the sign on the front. Funny, Kum Kau down the street claims the same thing. Anyway, this is a weird looking, really badly designed restaurant that I've never really wanted to linger in, although I did order takeout once. (Fun fact: Their takeout menu features an interior shot with a beautiful view of the Blockbuster Video across the street.)
Since they advertise as Spanish and Chinese cuisine and boast about their roasted Spanish-style chicken, I ordered the chicken with a side of vegetable fried rice. And you know what? They were both good! The fried rice tasted like good cheap Chinese food, and the chicken tasted like good rotisserie chicken. I was impressed. However, it is still a creepy looking restaurant that I can't give more than three stars to.
Side note: They have huge, tropical drinks that will get even a seasoned alcoholic drunk -- and they deliver them. -

Really awful Spanish rice and beans, the fried chicken for me was always fried too hard. It's a ok place but if you want good Spanish style rice and beans go to a Latin restaurant.

A few weeks ago I was surprised by a voicemail from Sapolo saying they had reopened. Praise Jesus!!! Unfortunately, I'm moving out of the area soon and won't be able to partake in Sapolo's culinary delights for much longer.
That reminds me...

Open again! Best drinks of any restaurant. The food is okay, but the cheesy ambiance is really why I go there...(and Cici... and the crispy noodle appetizer).
It's one of the only places in the area that offers complimentary fortune cookies with your takeout order.. which I appreciate greatly. -

Honestly, this has to be one of the best restaurants for what it is-- Chinese & Spanish food. It's more like a diner than a take-out/sit-in place, and I really like the warm tropic-like design. The staff is amiable. They're pretty lenient with people who are picky with their food. (I know my boyfriend is very picky. He wants everything well done, etc, extra this, less oil, more of that.) It was really upsetting that they closed down for a while, I have yet to find another place that matches up to it.
Delivery speed is pretty decent. I mean, don't expect them to be right at your door the moment they finish cooking the food, especially during their high times in the evening (during dinner). But I haven't have any complaints. And they deliver REALLY late (around 1-2am) so it's great! Another upside! They do charge a delivery fee, but compared to other places that delivers by bike, they deliver by car, so they probably need to pay for gas... so i'm not complaining; hey, whatever, as long as my food comes at a reasonable time!)
Overall, I have no complaints and nothing but praise for this place!
I LOVE their chicken wings, and here are some things you MUST try:
Broil Filet of Fish w/ Jumbo Shrimp
Roasted Chicken (1/2 chicken w/ salad & vegetable fried rice)
Beef Steak/Chicken Steak (So YumYum~)
Fried Scallops!!!!
There's only one downside though... I go to school in NJ now, and they're most definitely not going to deliver here :( I guess I'll have to settle for Noodle Gourmet... Sigh... -

I'm a yellow rice fiend... with that being said... their arroz amarillo is better tasting that most other places, but I've had boxed yellow rice (GOYA, people!) that has tasted much better. Their rice sometimes tastes like it's been defrosted.
Pretty good prices. I don't make an effort to come here, but I definitely stop by if I'm super hungry. -

This review is a bit late, as they seem to no longer be answering their phone.
Quick delivery, even if they won't come to your door. Notable for having had healthy choices, not bad prices. -

Great chino latino food! One of the best chinese restaurants in the area. Not oily and great sized portions. looooove any of the shrimp dishes - esp the general tsos or sesame.
Quick delivery - I've never actually stepped in the joint.
Ahhh, unfortunately, they no longer deliver to my area. I will miss you Sapolo, my little friend. -

I had a late dinner here yesterday. The service was horrible! I asked the waiter for broccoli in garlic sauce with brown rice; I am a vegetarian and after hearing my order, my friend with whom I was dining said he always forgets that I am a vegetarian. Shortly after we ordered, the waiter returned and placed an order of CHICKEN with broccoli in front of me. My friend called the waiter back to the table and told him that I had ordered broccoli in garlic sauce. The waiter sucked his teeth and said "you said chicken!" I knew he wouldn't own up to mixing up my order. He took the plate away and later returned with a plate of mushy, terribly overcooked broccoli in garlic sauce. I took a couple of bites but couldn't stand the mushy consistency of the broccoli. It was as if it had all been pre-chewed. After dealing with the waiter's bad attitude and the unpalatable food, I have decided I will stay away from Sapolo in the future.

I've been coming here for years and they have been pleasant each and every time! My favorite dish is the broiled filet of fish with yellow rice and salad (no tomato). Very clean and hospitable.

Though I've never been to prison, I imagine the food there would taste like Sapolo. The chicken and vegetables had an eerily odd manufactured taste to them. Since my sauce was on the side, I think I had a fair assessment of quality. As for quantity, they give you tons of food. They've decent prices so I'd recommend it if you were starving. If it weren't so damn cold, I'd go outside to procure the supplies to make my own veggie stirfry.

i echo Bill J.'s sentiments. decent BK Chinese delivery (never eaten in) and they deliver late , too. i HATE that they changed their fries though - used to be the yummy crinkle fries, but now they're standard thin fries... BOO i say.
try these late night munchies:
large lemonade (YUM! - freshly made)
scallion pancakes
chicken wings
friend ice cream -

Not half bad, and dirt cheap, it gave me some gastric distress though. I have found however this often comes with the territory.

Brooklyn, NY
The interior of the place does not look so bad but the food selection is very hit and miss. While I've read some pretty becoming reviews of this place on Yelp, ultimately I haven't had anything there that is beyond the realms of mediocrity. They have a neat little fish tank as well as a decent amount of seating if you want to invite people, but honestly, why would you ever want to do that?

With practically a slew of Chinese and Spanish restaurants around this area, this place actually gets both of them right. The Chinese section is one of the better take-out Chinese places (authentic Chinese this is not). And the Spanish section is pretty good. I usually get the Bisteca and it never disappoints. They give a good portion of yellow rice (or white or plantains) and salad with the meat and caramelized onions. Just make sure you do pickup if you order out. The delivery time is insane. Had to wait 1 hour for food and we were only a few blocks away (couldn't get away from work to get it).

REOPENED! They called me other day to tell me they are back in business. I know a lot of people think the food is terrible. I am not one of them. Their tofu is awesome, and much better than the surrounding chinese places (except of course KUM KAU). Their drinks are strong, and they deliver pretty late. They are good at making special orders for us (my picky roommate loves ordering from here) and pretty much always get it right for how hard it is to understand them. If you are eating here, or getting delivery, you MUST get a drink. The prices seem a bit steep at first, but the drinks will knock you out. Nutcrackers, Sex on the Beach, and ZOMBIES are our favorites. So so so so glad this place is reopened. Get to it know, before they shut down for good!

Mediocre food, awesomely strong tropical drinks. For me, Sapolo is a late night spot for when you're really hungry (Spanish half chicken and fried rice) or want a nice, stiff drink. If you're only in it for the food or it's still early, I'd recommend Kum Kao.

Sapolo keeps it real with late night delivery, fried food and the best banana milkshakes ever. Don't go here and expect 5 star cuisine. It's a cheap Chinese restaurant dressed up in a little extra lights and fluff. The food is pretty good though, I like the sweet and sour chicken.

Review from Chey H.
This is going to be more of a love letter to Sapolo than a review. Sapolo has been feeding me shrimp fried rice, general tso's chicken, and getting me drunk since 2007. I think their food is the best Chinese food in Clinton Hill /Fort Greene and if anyone wants to fight about this well then bring it on, I will defend Sapolo to the death. Because where can you get egg rolls AND super strong oh so tasty drinks? Where else? No where! Is their margarita the best I've ever had? No, but it gets the job done with ONLY ONE. And the decor. SO. GOOD. Giant wineglass shaped fish tank. Spinning airplane on the wall. Friendly waitstaff. I could go on forever. When they closed for a few months this past year, I was heartbroken. No other Chinese food would do for me. I thought I was going to have to give up on eating shrimp fried rice. But then something magical happened, and Sapolo was reopened! Oh Sapolo. I love you even more because you deliver drinks to my apartment, and you don't take forever to do so. If you want Chinese food, you can go anywhere, but you should really go here. You'll thank me.

Brooklyn, NY
Definitely a place for take-out instead of dine-in, but the Chinese food (never had the Mexican) is a great value. Most of the chicken dishes are only $5, much cheaper than Kum Kau down the street. And they take credit cards w/ no mininum which is always a plus. They're pretty quick when I go in to order, and the service is decent. It's not amazing Chinese food or anything, but then again when I get take-out Chinese food I'm not expecting a gourmet meal. Especially for the price this is my Chinese food place of choice in Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill.
