I've been here a few times now and my BFF and I usually have a great time! She lives 2 blocks away from this farmers market and on Sundays whenever I'm visiting her, we go and get some yummy items here.
Our faves are the bread stands -- the Breadman for one, I love their bite-sized pretzels, sourdough bread and the walnut raisin bread. The other bread stand I like (can't remember the name) but they have a delicious jalapeno and cheese pretzel there.
The prices are slightly more expensive than the Irvine Farmers Market which I go to on a regular basis, but the variety is also a lot wider here (except for the Asian vegetables, there is only one stand here).
I've also had the bratwurst here -- you get the bratwurst with all the toppings including sauerkraut and onions and you also get homemade lemonade for the low price of $5.
The funniest thing here is that you can valet your bicycle here!!
Please, for the love of God, try the fresh corn. It will change your life.
Aside from the corn, this farmers market is crowded, loud and totally overpriced - but I still love it. There is a good selection of fresh produce, flowers, cheese, nuts and other locally grown selections. There are also some great food stalls (corn! corn! corn! as well as crepes, burritos, eggs...etc.) and clothing proprietors (dresses, flip flops, jewelry...etc).
The crowd? It's like as if burning man and your local Gymboree had a baby.
In summary: Hippies + yuppies + surfers + stroller pushing mammas + hot dads with cute kids on their shoulders + a petting zoo (literally) + clothing + corn + crowd = SMFM.
Almost forget: The best part is the FREE bike valet (yes, bike!) out front. Only a Farmers Market just outside of Venice Beach would have a bike valet. It's too perfect.
What a fabulous way to start off my LA holiday... sunny Sunday morning at a farmers market that's minutes from the beach!
I love farmer's markets, particularly the ones with an emphasis on food over crafts and other artsy clutter items. This one is huge on food with a variety of vendors including burritos, corn, pesto, crepes, omelettes, french toast, etc... Mmmm. Bring lots of cash! The food we had here was decent but most orders are about $9 for a main item. The basil vendor is fabulous.
There's a ton of local produce here as well. I'm not a local, but I found the prices pretty steep compared to the usual farmer's markets I go to.
Nice place to people watch and listen to live music. I love that everything here is biodegradeable/compostable.
Marked down a star since it's incredibly crowded and parking is a pain. Nearby meters are $1/hr although there's a lot further away where you can get your parking validated.
I'd come back but I'll get up a little earlier next time to avoid the crowd hopefully!
This place SUCKS!! Really, over crowded, parking enforcment is everywhere writing tickets, homeless are everywhere begging (sorry but I didn't go there to help the homeless!), snobish, bad attitudes from vendors and customers.
There are so many strollers crashing into me and disrespectful people running into me that I left feeling very irritated and wondering why I put up with it. I had friends with me that just wanted to get out of there after 30 minutes.
The pony rides are pony's that are tied to a pole, ride in a circle with screaming kids on their backs for hours with an amplified band blasting music right next to them. No animal should be forced to do this. I have a problem with animal abuse and neglect for profit! Why hasn't this been shut down yet?
The food vendors offer allot of food for a good price with very good coffee but that's all I can say that was good here.
This use to be a nice neighborhood farmer's market each Sunday but I won't go back, it's not worth fighting the crowd and worrying if you'll get a ticket if your meter expires.or if you back your car in a spot instead of pulling forward or park too close to a red zone. I saw people being tickted for the smallest things. CONTROL YOUR GREED SANTA MONICA!!
The fresh fruit and vegies were over priced and not much of a selection, I found better prices at other farmers markets in LA, Glendale and the valley.
Wow. So busy! We went there today at 11am and the place was packed. I felt a little clostrophobic. Just a little. It's a relavitely small space (especially compared to the 2nd Street market) and there are lots of stroller pushers.
But I can't blame the mommies and daddys because there's tons of family fun like petting zoo, pony rides, live music and magic shows.
Best of all there's FREE bike valet and the BikeRoWave's FREE bike check ups.
Plus this market has some of the greatest food, I have to admit. Crepes, breakfast burritos, pancakes, etc. And the non-food vendors are pretty awesome too, like the Aura Shop (crystals and rocks).
This was one of the best and coolest Farmer's market I'd ever been to. We came across this place when we have our little Sunday breakfast in Venice and ever since then, we try to do our breakfast their once a month so we can stop by the farmer's market.
I love that fruits stand just infront facing Main street. they always put out the samples of their fruits so you can try them. SWEET AND JUICY!! I always pickup their oranges and grapfruits there!
And people picnic right their on the grass with their kids and family. Such a cool place to people watch too!
Just wish that it was bigger, have more vendors and longer business hours.
Eh ....
Great for lunch - the selection of restaurant-y stalls is great, albeit with excessive lines. Coconut milk served in the coconut and grilled ears of corn were the highlights for me.
As for produce .... sure, it's mainly organic, so maybe that accounts for the ridiculously high prices, but .... the prices! Oy! When I shell out more than 4 times what I would at the grocery store, I lose interest.
Free samples everywhere = win. Come for the samples, lunch, and leave.
This farmers market is great except for one thing. They do not allow animals so my dog had to wait outside while I took a look around. Minus 1 star for that.
Pros:
- Locally grown quality produce: (http://static.px.yelp...., http://static.px.yelp....)
- Pony Rides: Cute minature pony-go-round for the kids (http://static.px.yelp....)
- Live Band: Good music with lots of kids dancing (http://static.px.yelp....)
- Bike Valet: Don't have to worry about your bike being jacked with these guys (http://static.px.yelp....)
Cons:
- No pets allowed: http://static.px.yelp....
Overall a great place to spend a beautiful Sunday morning.
Horsie rides, local produce tents, a raw food vendor, oysters on the 1/2 shell, corn on the cob, tamales, make your own omelet station, kettle corn, hippie clothing...
Somehow they manage to cram all of this into a space the size of a small parking lot. The lawn out front is so crowded with people happily munching away at their food that it all feels a bit overwhelming. I've never gotten here early enough to beat the crowds--I'm of the philosophy that Sundays should be spent sleeping until noon. However, if you're an early riser, this is the place to be on a Sunday morning.
I give this place three stars because it's just too crowded for my taste. I think every visitor to Santa Monica should get to experience this place on a sunny Sunday morning, but all the same I'll skip it unless I'm in the mood for an unproductive shopping experience.
Also, I really wish they'd get rid of the pony rides. Those ponies look so pathetic going around and around in the direct sunlight, surrounded by loud music and screaming children. I'm surprised more people haven't complained about this already, but then again, I bet a lot of people don't have issue with it.
*** great market to see (and be seen) but it's usually very crowded. ***
disclaimer:
"selection of fresh produce offerings may not be the best
and produce pricing is higher than other farmer's markets."
however, the selection of "Whole Foods" type organics is superior.
selection of premium goodies like bath soaps, honey, dates, nuts,
specialty omelettes, quiches, and salads is also superior to others.
then consider pony ride, jazz band, grassy knoll and validated beach
prkg ... Santa Monica has a consistently attractive Sunday marketplace.
*** so me likes ... but be a lil wary of overcrowding and very long lines. ***
This is my favorite farmer's market to go to. I like going early before the crowd really comes in, around 8 a.m. or so. What I like about this farmer's market over the Saturday one on the promenade is that logistically, it seems easier. Going early in the morning allows you a good parking spot, less than a block away. Also, it has Harry's Berries for strawberries, and cherries, and my favorite peach/nectarine stand in the summer, which is all you can ask for.
Get a coconut from the raw stand.
Drink its sweet nectar.
Have them chop it in half so you can eat the delicious meat.
I don't know if it's as good as it gets because I haven't been to all the farmers market out there, but I'm sure it's tops. After only two visits I can't help but feel I do really, really like it. It's nice to be introduced to the other great things my so-cal home has by other people. The Brit has brought me here twice for an omelet breakfast which we chow down on while sitting in the grass.
Have you seen these omelette's? Huge. Made by the restaurant there next to the museum, the name escapes me, quick and fresh, and good. Perfect to nurse a hangover if you've got one, or just great for a lazy Sunday afternoon meal. Get all the ingredients you want... corn, mushrooms, bell peppers, cheese, glorious cheese. And they are quick, which is better than most of the other eatery set ups through the market that can leave you waiting a fair amount of time before you get your morsels. Beware the pancake stand just next to the omelet station... it can tempt you to stray away. Big, thick blueberry pancakes the size of the plate. I wanted to go so badly, but that was a wait and I was starving.
I love the market and always want to buy so much, but every time we come I've not got any cash, leaving the Brit to foot the bill and scold me with a good eye roll and grumble. The flowers are gorgeous. Definitely some of the best I've seen at a farmer's market... great selection. Somewhere you can get fresh orange juice and I love it. Pulp! The Brit likes the coffee, and I want to get some of those trio packs of berries!
Now, while it's great in all it's natural glory, it is extremely crowded and children run rampant. Watch your drinks on the lawn or some little chitlin' just might plow through it. You'll find lots of earthy parents with their specialty strollers running after "Paxton Jude" here. A lot of people also seem to get together for brunch here as well, so keep an open eye on a free spot of lawn. It's best to work this as a team... one of you get the food, another the drink and then try to wrangle yourself a spot. Bring a blanket... we always forget and it's a good idea. Also, be prepared for crack... you'll see it everywhere sitting there.
I'm not sure if this really is THE place to be seen as others have stated, but I did see Cameron Mannheim. Other than that, I just see a bunch of people. Not very diverse, and it does have a richer crowd, but this is Santa Monica people. Is there anywhere in this city that people aren't trying to be "seen" at?
Only in Santa Monica at a farmer's market would you find....
1. Basically a vegetarian heaven---I am serious, hardly any meat options here, and you can't really buy much meat at all to even take home and cook with which is pretty popular at other markets I've been to
2. Everything completely recyclable and compostable---yes, plates, food, napkins, silverware....all in one trashcan!!! crazy!!
3. BIKE VALET----yes VALET FOR YOUR BIKE!! I mean seriously people, you are fit enough to ride your bike to the market, but too lazy to park it yourself??? come on!
4. Miniature pony rides for the kids! Complete with this hard core strapping in devices for the kids to sit in, because you know that the parents who come here have money to sue!!! ha ha
5. Tons of local and organic food including HUGE pancakes that can be made with chocolate chips or anything else and what I got at one of the food stands, was this tasty tasty chicken quesadilla grilled and filled with cheese and caramelized onions served with sour cream and guac and potatoes all for $7!! It was quite a steal I think and I would definitely come back here again to try some of the other food! Or maybe even buy some produce!!!
Let's start this discussion by cutting through all the whining over the parking situation.
Boatloads (carloads?) of FREE parking exist about 2 blocks away from the market at the beach. The procedure is a little odd: You pay $7 bucks or whatever as you drive in, you get a voucher, you visit the market, you get the thing "validated," you go back to your wheatgrass-powered Prius and get your $7 back when you drive out. I'm no math genius, but I think that works out to "free." And easy, too. So stop yer whining and driving around like a nut.
The market itself has tons of opportunities for hot and fresh stand-up or sit-down (on the lawn or curb) dining. The prices are somewhat high for most items, especially in these days of income redistribution. But then again, this is The People's Republic of Santa Monica. The crepes and burritos (in particular) are lights out.
You will also find lots of fresh and colorful flowers at very good prices and a very good selection of fresh veggies and fruits, too, which sort of is the whole reason for the market in the first place.
And a live band keeps the place happy and bouncy, too. Feel free to distribute $1 of your income to the band as a tip. No government interference necessary.
I realized and accepted that Farmer's Markets on the Westside are not purveyors of cheap produce, but rather are to be enjoyed for the bringing the local small town community hippie vibe to a gentrified bustling urban beach city. If anyone wants good, fresh, and dirt cheap produce, they should venture to an Asian or Latino market that can be found in various parts of So Cal.
The Santa Monica Farmers Market is the perfect place for a relaxing Sunday morning local brunch experience. There's free parking with validation in the lot west of the location near the beach. As you're walking into the area you hear children laughing, playing on the grass and with the ponies (it's always a little sad to see ponies tied up for mankind's amusement though), some local musician/band is playing, and the smell of crepes, coffee, omelets, etc hits you causing your mouth to salivate and your belly to feel painstakingly empty. The vendors aren't solely about food though, you can find all sorts of little trinkets and even clothing while walking around. The crowd is generally eclectic and friendly.
It's my usual favorite spot to splurge on some food ($10 for a crepe) and relax after a good Sunday morning work out at the beach. =)
I used to love this place until I realized that it stressed me out and left me frustrated. The produce and cooked food stalls are great and you'll get some tasty meals out of the food you buy here IF you ever get around to it! The farmers' market is so filled with strollers and parents who let their screaming kids run around that instead of getting your lazy Sunday off to a great start, you'll just want to go home, get back in bed and re start the day without the crazy stress of screams and strollers.
My favorite things about this farmer's market:
Grilled corn stand
Giant apple-cinnamon pancakes
Fresh squeezed OJ
This one doesn't have as many vendors as the Sunday market in Hollywood, but it's close to the beach - so you can walk down and relax or sightsee. It does get a bit crowded, but that's part of the fun...people watching.
I love this place. I love Sunday mornings here. I love bringing my nephew here and watch him dance to the live music or play with the crazy petting zoo animals.
I love that they have actual food to purchase as well as the farmers market staples of veggies and fruit, etc.
It IS a bit crowded, but the people are nice enough when I say excuse me with the stroller :)
Dear Breadman,
You offer one of my favorite treats at the Farmer's Market...the chocolate, cinnamon sweet roll. Much to my surprise (and to the others in line), the cost has now increased while the size of the sweet roll has decreased...no more fluffy, fresh sweetness. It's now half the size, dense and maybe day old. Oh, Breadman. If this keeps up, I see a breakup in our future.

My new Sunday ritual.
Where else but the Farmer's Market can you enjoy a sunny, blue-skied morning… Read more »
Loved this! Went w/ a friend while out visiting her, we went just after it opened, so parking was easy, and we were able to get a table to eat our breakfast at. We wandered around when we first got there, scoped out the different stalls for food, and ended up at some yummy place that served breakfast omlettes, sausage & home fries. A TON of food, and so good.
We sat around for a bit, people-watched to our heart's content, and listened to the band. Wandered around the rest of the stalls and poked around for a bit. We also got a crepe later on, YUM.
I could spend every Sunday morning here.
Fun place to go; However, not too much of farmers' market to me. I would go there to meet friends, picnicking on farmers' market food. From what I remember, I think they have more entertainments than grocers......and yeah, it is crowded that you are lucky if you can manage to find a space to sit on the lawn.
Prepare yourself for mayhem. Parking mayhem. I'd come here more often if parking wasn't such a bitch.
This Farmer's market is more of an "event" than a place to get your groceries for the week. They have pony rides. Yes, pony rides. So you can imagine the chaos that ensues when the food vendors, food stands, clothing stands, and the trendy location all come to a head on Sunday morning. Madness.
It's a fun place to bring guests who are from out of town for breakfast. You can have some local food and people watch which can be entertaining. Other than that, this isn't the most practical food market if you just want to get some things and get out. It's at least a 1-2 hour affair.
This place is great if you get here as soon as it opens. After that it is a mob scene, filled with the most entitled people in Santa Monica not looking where they're going and bumping into you or running over your feet with their stroller.
I love the crepes and omelets, and the live band adds a real festive quality, though they usually start after it's a mobscene. I do feel bad for the ponies that have to deal with all those maniac kids though..
Extra points for the valet bike parking.
surprise, surprise, even with the animals, it doesnt smell like poop!
yeah, there are midget horses and stuff for kiddies to ride, but it's surprisingly unpoopysmelly. for that alone i'd give it a bunch of stars. my typical sunday morning involves a trek to this farmers market, so i can stock up on my groceries for the week. i love the salad mixes and greens. huge fan of the spicy/bitter leaves like the mustard greens. and the heirloom tomatoes are always great.
what i love most about farmers markets is that i can go there starving, and by the time i'm done with my shopping, i've had my tummy filled with all the samples of stuff they give. and groundwork has a little tent set up so you can get some coffee too. when the weather's nice, it's great to bike out here, but when i know i'm gonna buy flowers, i come in my car so the flowers don't get messed up on the ride home.
i've heard people rave about the omelettes and things like that, but i hate standing in line, so until i get here early enough to beat everyone else, i'll just stick to my produce :)
Simply amazing!
It's been a long time since I've been to any kind of outdoor bazaar. Had I known the glory of the Santa Monica Farmers Market I would have been here years ago.
Motivated by an urge to cook something delicious at home, I came here Sunday morning with a friend to get some goods. Thanks to the City of Santa Monica website, which is managed by my project management teacher, I knew there was free validated parking along the beach:
http://www.smgov.net/f...
Thanks to the stupid (but wonderful) day light savings change, we got there with just enough time to wonder around and see everything. After hopping a fence to gain entrance, we were greeted by all the sites and smells a good farmers market should have. Rows of fresh veggies, rows of cooked food stands and hoards of flesh eating children riding ponies.
One thing to note, go early. Duh. If you want the best picks of veggies, don't go at noon and expect all the vendors to have everything. By 12:30pm I saw a few stands packing up and others only had the damaged goods, which were being sold for dirt cheap!
The best part of the market after the fresh produce, was all the food vendors. Giant pancakes! Huge quesadillas! Enormous omelets! Gargantuan sausages! Loads of tamales! $8 three pound burritos! I was in heaven! We decided to split a Hungarian sausage with sauerkraut and grilled onions. So good! Well fair enough it's really hard to mess up a delicious wiener, but they did a good job.
I got a kick out of all the people there too. Lots of cute dogs, pissed off teens walking the ponies around in circles, trendy LA'ers in their $1,000 outfits buying bok choy, little kids falling down left and right. Perfect mix for what you'd expect to see.
I will go here every Sunday I can for all the freshly picked foods and all the wonderfully cooked delights.
Oh and the dinner that was made with what we got was superb! So good to eat something that you know was in the ground less than a day ago.
The most overrated overpriced tourist trap Farmers market in southern California on a Sunday .Greedy Santa Monica makes you pay to park on a Sunday .I live in this Santa Monica neighborhood i go to Brentwood farmers market , Pacific Palisades's farmers market better quality, prices on fruit and produce skip this one they have more food cooking and selling junk going on

+ Fresh veggies
+ Santa Monica
Its a festival
Rain or Shine
I love this place so much. What better way to start a Sunday morning than with a tamale and fresh squeezed oj?
It's always busy, but the people are laid back and chill, so you never feel stressed or rushed. It's a Sunday in Santa Monica after all...
Parking can be a pain, but be patient, and you will prevail! Or park a few blocks away on a side street and hoof it. Who doesn't love a morning walk? A bonus is that it's so close to the beach that you have a great picnic spot when you're done.
The tamale stand is my favorite. Great vegetarian options. I went to that stand initially because I saw a guy with some pro vegetarian tote bag go there and I wasn't sure where to start. He didn't lead me wrong, and now I'm hooked!
The produce is great, the vendors are friendly, and samples abound!
This is one of the best Farmer's Markets I have been to. Its a good size and it has such variety. I love it. All the fresh fruits and vegetables, different art vendors, and food vendors like julianos raw, tamales, grilled corn, etc.
You can park for free at the lot by the beach if you leave by 1:30pm. i think they are petitioning for actual parking for it if anybody wants to look into it.
i got blood oranges, my favorite!! yum
BRING CASH!! and Bring your own reusable Grocery Bag - awesome! i need to get in the hang of doing that even for the mall and stuff.
These stars are for one reason and one reason only...the place that sells 3 lb burrittos!!!
Wait. seriously that place is beyond heaven. We had the huge quesidilla that simply had cheese and chicken with the worlds freshest tastiest salsa and fresh grilled vegetable on the side. I was like "Are you kidding me?" when there was a heaping mound of broccoli and zuccini and salad on the side. $6.50.
I also appreciate the garbage gaurds who help people to dispose properly instead of trashing perfectly recycleable products. Shout out!
Also, thanks for putting ice in the o.j. fresh o.j. squeezer guys!
The market itself could do with some more variety, some hummus, fresh meat and fish. We wanted to buy dinner but had to drop by Albertsons on the way home. :(
However, the people watching at the market is not to be missed! This Sunday's special: 45 year old mom with absolutely no undergarments and a skin tight fuscia lycra dress with bulging tummy to boot. Thanks for the entertainment, my boyfriend had a great time!
This is the Hollywood version of a farmers market. I don't think most of the people who go on Sundays have ever been to a REAL farmers market. So, if that is what you are looking for, I wouldn't look for it here.
However, if you are looking for some eye candy and to gorge yourself on crepes, breakfast burritos, etc while getting a little sunshine and watching the beach bunny moms scurry around wrangling their kids, this is the place to go.
You know when you go somewhere and the experience exceeds your expectations and you get excited and you keep pointing at things and before you can say anything you see something else and you point at that until you realize that it is useless to even try and speak so you simply keep quiet and just make mental notes for later.
It's like that!
LOVE this place. GREAT vibe. Very family friendly. I always go and gorge on a pancake and an omelette. I should really branch out and try something else..but well I'm a creature of habit. Just be sure to be patient when hunting for parking. If you're close enough (which I'm not) there's a HUGE bike valet out front.
I'm actually running out the door to grab a late breakfast now. :)
Hating a farmer's market is like hating a puppy riding a rainbow. Yes, the Sunday Santa Monica Farmer's Market is one of the best two ways to start your morning. Grab a crepe, delicious tamale or hit the famous omelet stand. (Note: Two can share one omelet.)
I've been to plenty of Farmer's Markets in Los Angeles; this has a great vibe and generally the people are very helpful. Also, if you go while the market is shutting down swing by the flowers...you can get great deals on the remaining inventory. So, throw an extra few bucks in your pocket, buy a veggie you've never seen before and support these peeps.
Late morning gets way crowded, but it's still worth it.
Every Sunday when I lived in Venice I'd wake up early and head over to the farmer's market on Main. This outing never disappointed and always proved to be both a social success and an epicurean delight!
The scene is great, sitting on the grass and chatting with the people around you feels welcoming and natural and everyone is friendly. For those of us who are total canine fanatics, the dog watching is first rate - they all have to stay outside the market, so as you enter you're sure to see a whole line up of adorable pooches just waiting to be petted :)
The produce selection is good - not great, but you can almost always find what you need if it's in season. The real treat here are the prepared foods, I still dream about those amazing apple pancakes and the hand made tamales - yummy!
The Disneyland of all farmer's markets... Crowds are crazy. But I like a good party.
If I lived closer I would definitely bike here if only to use the awesome bike valet service. (Santa Monica pounced on the idea that a homeless guy used to provide a few years back to watch bikes and dogs for spare change... The bike valet is now a civic institution. Hopefully they at least paid the guy for the idea).
yeah, true marketgoers should despise this place because it's not really about the farmers. It's more about the hot food, corn on the cob, and music and the ponies -- My 2-year old niece was very brave and did the $4 pony ride much to her parents' and auntie's delight. Really, it's quite the scene here. Perry Farrell and his wife and kids were in line, too -- a nice little sighting.
Once you get past the live entertainment, grassy seating, and the wonderful Victorian, there actually are fruit and vegetable stands with fabulous goods. Enjoy it all. And don't forget to support the farmers!!!
Besides the fact that chefs strut around this place with an entourag of cooks like it's some sort of fashion show; this is probably one of the best damn farmer's markets I've been to in so-cal.
I visited the market for the first time today and immediately fell in love with the sheer amount of produce and goods they had. Squashes, which are starting to come into season now, flooded the stands everywhere. As well did heirloom tomatoes of all shapes and sizes, strawberries, citrus, figs, pears, pluots, herbs and the list goes on and on.
A few of my favorites were, Harry's Berries (duh!), the couple at Redwood Hill Farms and their cheeses of course! (they're a cute couple, aren't they?), and the herb stand that was dishing out bunches of rosemary and thyme for a buck a piece (what a fuckin deal! :D ).
My only disappointed was the fact that I couldn't find anyone who sold slab bacon or lamb, there was also no fish vendor in sight, and the mushroom stand was a bit pathetic.
Oh and this isn't the market's fault, more like santa monica's.. but why do all the goddamn parking structures look exactly the same? I walked into 3 different ones before I found the one I parked in. They all seem to be around the same 4 block radius too.
Five stars, going back every wednesday!

Update:
Oops! Apparently I have this review under the wrong Santa Monica Market. This review is actually meant for the 2nd St./Arizona Market on Wednesdays. Thanks Joan S.!
