My first impression of this zoo left a lot to be desired. The woman at the front where you purchase tickets either a) hates her job b) is in the throws of menopause c) is just a miserable bitch d) all of the above. For some strange reason, the simple fact that we are members of the North Carolina Aquarium and get free membership to the Santa Barbara zoo made her so angry, she was almost yelling at me. She also did NOT want to give me a map?! It was very strange...

That was my entrance into the zoo. I thought it MAY be a terrible day! Alas, I was wrong. The zoo is not the biggest zoo, but it is well laid out, clean, and really pretty. You can get pretty close to the animals and see them very well. You can almost touch the elephants and we got to hand feed giraffes. My son also rode the train around the zoo and loved it. What a great little zoo! Maybe they should just fire sourpuss in the front!

I never get here early enough... I'm not a morning person... and nobody I know is either.. so maybe I need someone to drag me up at the crack of dawn for me to get here on time...and I mean specifically, in time to feed the giraffes. It's something I've always wanted to do... but it closes pretty early...and since this place is a bit of a drive for me.. I always miss it.

This place is no LA Zoo. They're aren't nearly as many animals... but the animals that they do have are much closer... so I guess it's a more intimate zoo. It's great for taking pictures... and just observing some other animals.

I love animals... so any zoo is fun for me... but I remember specifically liking the huge black pig. hahaha. I know that's so bizarre. Maybe you were able to feed him. I'm not sure... but I remember he was nibbling on my sweater.

It seems like a great zoo... it's always clean and well maintained and the animals look healthy and well-cared for.

Also, if you're a LA Zoo member, I think you get a discount and vice versa, since they're part of the same zoo society.

I came here for a childrens B-Day party so the entrance was free.

The overall park is pretty small compared to other zoos i have been to in the past. The park was not crowded at all and that made parking easy as well, parking is 5$. As for the animals they are pretty cool they have 2 gorilla, 3 giraffe, 2 lion,2 elephants,2cali condor and 2 bald eagles. As well as reptiles, penguin, otters and all kinds of birds. Thy have a cool train that circles the park and that was a nice feature for such a small park. The train did lose traction at the end of the ride on its last up hill due to the weight of our whole party cramming in the train. The driver was funny and knew exactly what to do when it did slip he threw sand on the tracks and on we went. The food in the park was pretty lame but you cant expect much at a zoo so i would pack a lunch next time.

We took our 3yr old this week (Tuesday) not too many people in the park which was nice as we got to spend some time watching the animals instead of the people.
The park has a really great ocean view lots of nice exhibits and a wonderful play area for kids. It was $40 by the time we paid for parking.

Those were all the positives, on the negatives, my son's dropped his ball cap in the kids play area and within 2 minutes we turned around to retrieve it only to determine another parent sole it. Come on people stealing another kids hat - unacceptable.

That was a bummer but the real disturbing issue was observing the Gorilla who was staring at a wall while eating his own poop. Obviously he is bored and unhappy. This is one animal that doesn't belong in captivity.

If you live in Santa Barbara or the surrounding area, this zoo might feel like a 5 star place.  Having been to the World Famous San Diego zoo and the LA zoo I can honestly say that this place does not compare.

My wife and I walked the entire park in less then an hour.  Many of the exhibits seemed dirty and I know that it's supposed to smell a little funky at zoos because it's a zoo, but it really did smell/look like sewage near the Gibbons.

The one positive thing was...well see my picture posted to explay why ;)

Oh yea, also saw Paul Pierce their too, but not sure if that's a positive or negative being a Laker Fan and all.

Very fun little zoo. Perfect for young kids. Small, lots of "play areas" to burn off energy. Not very expensive (and they offer a small military discount -$1 per ticket for the family). Beautiful location on the beach in Santa Barbara (right next to the Hyatt in East Beach). We were there near Halloween & they had lots of Halloween decorations and activities. Very cool.

Tip. Don't walk the elevated wooden pathway on the freeway side of the zoo. Unless you enjoy the smell of bird poop, the pathway is literally painted white with it.

Although I'm partial to this Zoo because I grew up in Santa Barbara, it really is a lovely spot. The animals are all well cared for, it's clean, and it's beautifully landscaped. We went on Thanksgiving Day which was a special treat. We got to see elephants smash and eat huge pumpkins, and a bunch of hyperactive otters dig earthworms out of a hollow pumpkin. We also got to see a male lion really close up, which was great. My toddler was in awe, but I think she enjoyed feeding the goats and sheep the most. The view from the top of the hill is spectacular, and there's a decent cafe as well. While there are ample opportunities to purchase souvenirs, they're not as in your face as some of the other regional zoos. A great place to take your kids, or just yourself.

"The zoo has been ranked numerous times as one of the nation's best small zoos." --Wikipedia

It's a pretty good zoo. The facilities/decor are from nice to well done. The exhibits are well maintained. The staff are friendly, adequate, and helpful. There was even a greeter at the entrance. Most importantly, the animals look content.

There's a train that traverses around the grounds and a small park in the middle where kids can play. We watched the penguins being feed and for a little extra, you can feed the giraffe's. They have a variety of animals, from elephants, lions, and gorilla's. The hit was a dinosaur show with an actual costume straight out of "Walking with the Dinosaur".

Unfortunately, I overheard one of the staff members radio there was a lost child, however moments later employees both in uniform and not, began popping out from everywhere. Being a parent, good to know help is always near.

It was hot summer day, but a cool breeze from the ocean kept things nice.

The place gets my rare 5 stars, simply because it's the best city zoo I've been to. The one in LA doesn't even compare.

Thumbs up, Tony the Tiger style! But let me know what you think.

What a B E A U T I F U L  zoo. It's definitely smaller than what we're used to at Los Angeles but this was SO worth the drive. It is very easy to maneuver around with little ones and there's a great play area for the the to run and climb around.  The weather is just perfect there. They have a good variety of animals for such a small zoo and it's very clean.  My favorite animals to see oddly enough were the piranhas.  As dangerous as movies make them out to be, they're kind of cute and will beat anyone in a staring contest.

We tried hopping on the zoo tram but every time we got to the entrance, it was packed.  Maybe next time.  I wish we lived closer so we could go every week.

Wow what a great little zoo, the grounds are so nice. There are lots of great places to hangout and sit or picnic. The staff was super friendly. Everything was painless and stress free. No long wait, no big crowds just a really nice day for my family. I highly recommend this place for toddlers because it's not to big and very kid friendly.

This is such a terrific spot for a wedding!

The location itself is split into a lower lawn for the ceremony, and an upper lawn "bluff" for the cocktail and reception.

In between the ceremony and reception, we basically  got full reign of the closed zoo, with a focus on the train ride and an extra special giraffe feeding. All of the wedding guests got one or multiple chances to feed the giraffes romaine lettuce and get slobbered with their tongues.

I'm not sure if the caterer was from the zoo or not, but they had this smoked plank salmon in the buffet that was out of this world.

The atmosphere was so whimsical - so lovely. The staff was really friendly and welcoming. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this venue to friends who are looking for something original in southern california.

Indeed so worth the drive to visit this zoo.  You can literally finish touring and seeing all the animals within 2 to 3 hours.

The train ride is a must so you can really get the feel of how truly nice Santa Barbara zoo is.

The weather was perfect.  The drive was great.

    We would definitely return again!

Lovely little zoo. Although it seems like some of the animals aren't happy being in a cage but the kids at the park was happy.  It was a hot sunny day over 80 degrees but still it was a lovely walk around the zoo and seeing all the animal compared to San Diego Zoo what I grew up with.

I really enjoy the Asian Bird section as they look more freely and loose. The staff there was very friendly and kind.  The price is reasonable.  I went on the train ride and for $4 is not bad and the conductor was a nice gentleman and try to make the ride exciting with the announcement and afterward ask you how was it and what part did you like?  Feeding the Giraffe was cool and for $5, it was a great experience for me as it was my first time, up close beside an elephant and two cats ;-)

The view of the ocean and island from the zoo was breathless. Lucky Giraffes ;-) Also make sure you take some quarters with you as you can also feed the kois for 50c and of course you have the ducks and birds come on over to eat some too.

I love this zoo and if you want to find a place to chill then this would be one of them or a place to picnic and take the family for a day of hanging out.  There are so many cute funny animals there especially the otters will put a show on for you when they wake up ha ha.

I would go here again ;-) xx

Great zoo with a large variety of animals. The staff is awesome. I took a class at CSU Channel Islands that had us going to this zoo every Friday. We learned so much and had the opportunity to get extremely close to the animals (including the lion!!). We got to see all the behind the scenes action at the zoo and they truly care for the health and safety of all the animals. Make sure you donate money to them... they deserve it.

What an adorable, and wonderful zoo! I have been here twice, and both times were amazing.  The Santa Barbara Zoo is perfect because it doesn't take all day to see every exhibit, and you can spend just the right amount of hours to see everything (2 or 3 hours). It's great for people of all ages, whether you are taking your kids out to keep them busy, going out on a date with a loved one, or just want to pass the time.  It does not cost much for admission, and they have a snack bar, and some gift shops scattered about.  I particularly enjoyed the fact that they had all types of animals, and they seemed well cared for.  I dread going to some zoos (and never go back!) because it's so sad to see some of the animals.

My favorite exhibits were the river otters, snow leopard, gorilla, and the bald-eagle! I loved being able to pet some of the sheep, and feed the birds, and fish as well. It's neat that they allowed people to interact with some of the animals, and they have signs that allow you to learn about them too.

    I like the Zoo.

Walk up to pay our admission of $12.00 each and the lady asks me if we parked in their lot.

    Ahh, yah we did.
    That's $5.00.
Okay, so I'm down $29.00 already and we are not even through the front gate yet.  Should have told her we walked here!

The first thing I see is the train, and my inner eight year old wants to ride it.

$4.00 to ride the train.  Hey, that's $8.00 for both of us!  Pass on the train, we are here to see the animals!  Saw the big rodents, Chinese Alligator, some Pink Flamingos.  Golden Lion Tamarin Monkeys were my favorite, and the highlight of the day!

The gorilla looked depressed, then I felt depressed for the depressed gorilla.  How depressing.

Came upon the Giraffes.  Hey, look you can get real close to the Giraffes!  I walk down into this area where you can come right up to these cool animals.  This Zoo employee rudely says to me "Sir, I need you to move back behind the rail, this area cost $4.00 if you want to come in here".

$4.00 to get close to the Giraffes?  So that's the way it's going to be.  What about that transaction that took place when we first can in?  Remember, I gave you $24.00 for admission and $5.00 to park my car so we could see the animals?  You want some more money to get a better look at the animals now?

Hey SB Zoo, ever occur to you some families with a lot of kids may have a problem ponying up $4.00 bucks each for their little ones to feed the Giraffes?  How about those same kids that wanted to ride on the train?

I felt like I was at a nightclub and I had paid my cover, now they wanted more cash from me to get into the VIP room.  Nope, I'm not doing it.

Santa Barbara Zoo, I understand you need funds to pay for keeping the place running, but I don't like to be nickel & dimed.  How about you just charge $15.00 to get in, loose the parking charge, let everyone get close to the Giraffes and maybe let me ride the train a few times!

    I love this zoo!!!

My favorite part is the physical size of the zoo. It's small, less walking and easy to see everything fast. I grew up in SB so I am not sure how many times I have been here but it's got to be more than 20. They have lions, a gorilla, the swinging tree monkeys, anteaters, giraffes, otters, elephants, rare birds and a bunch of other cool animals.

Admission is $12 and $4 to park. I like to pack a lunch and eat on the lawn. (Just like when we were little!) The train is still fun!! I still get excited going over the aviary where you go over water. :)

Great place to take the kids or out of town guests for a 1/2 day that won't make you feel tired afterwards.

It's a cute zoo that I would say is good for little kids.  It is pretty small, definitely one of the smaller zoos I have been to over the years.  It is good for a quick stop for the kids though; about 2 hours and you are done.  I have to say that charging for parking is ridiculous given the price of admission (you can park on the street nearby and just walk).  We went on Veteran's Day (my husband is active duty in the Air Force) and the parking was free, but they were only going to give him a discount on his ticket and charge the rest of us full price.  On Veteran's Day??  Seriously.  We had called the day before and asked if the First Responder's Special that week would apply for active duty military and we were told yes, but once we got there the response changed.  First responders got in for free,  plus 1 adult and two kids.  Basically a family of four could get in for free.  We complained to the manager and we able to get in for free under the first responders special.  Kind of ridiculous if you ask me, but I'm glad the manager bothered to make it right with us.

My third stop on my adventure in Santa Barbara was here. After dreaming of animals the prior night, it drew me here. This is a tiny gem. This little zoo is beautifully landscaped and set up. The thing I noticed and enjoyed was that the zoo had kept up with technology. Around the animal exhibits were smart phone video links containing even more information on the animals. They're those little blocky bar-code type-picture things that smart phones can read and decipher. They also had hand-crank-powered recording boxes. After pressing the button, the hand crank would be turned and it would answer the question you were interested in. A neat little device. The animals are well cared for, the exhibits are informative and spacious, and it's a fun place to visit. My Santa Barbara adventure was going strong, but nearing it's conclusion.

We were grateful for this zoo when we were in the area with another family of four with kids the same age as ours.  Those kiddos appreciated the chance to see gorillas, giraffes, flamingoes and all sorts of creatures!  The highlight of their visit came when they happened to catch a snake eating a large rodent as we walked by.  It was so gross and they were so riveted.  Thank you SB Zoo for the Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom moment!  Yuck!

The kids other favorite attraction at the zoo involved cardboard.  If you've ever heard a parent say that they don't need to buy expensive toys for their kids, they just need to give them the cartons or boxes they came in, you'd understand why if you visited here. The zoo installed an artificial turf covered  hill kids slide, ski and scoot down on cardboard pieces. I saw two kids running at the hill looking like they'd struck gold after discovering a cardboard box they toted behind them.

Parking is $5 but admission is free if you're a Happy Hollow member.

It's my birthday and we'll go where I want to...and where I wanted to go was the Santa Barbara Zoo...and I'm so glad that we came here.  Yeah, it's a small zoo and they don't have a ton of animals but it's great way to spend a couple of hours and see a pretty good variety of animals.

I found a $1.00 off coupon at the hotel that we were staying at so it was like $22.00 for two people.  As we were entering...the school buses were pulling away...YEA!!!  It was still crowded but not too bad and the kids were pretty well behaved making it a very enjoyable experience.

It will only take about two hours to get through here and I like that.  The last time I went to the San Diego Zoo I was running around there for 8 hours trying to see everything in one day and by the time I left I was exhausted...not the case here.  I still had enough energy to go birthday shopping at the Camarillo Outlets :o)

This zoo has come a long way. They are constantly surprising me with new and upcoming attractions. We got a family pass and was worth with how close and times we visit. It makes you second think of being trapped in the house during the summer or weekend. The size is of course smaller then Los Angeles, so you could go to downtown Santa Barbara, State street, or drive up to Solvang or wine country. There are a lot of other things you could do.

Went here with my family for the first time. It's a nice getaway small zoo that has just enough for family with kids. When we went there, the lion and otter exhibits were closed, but all the other ones were up and running. Didn't get to try the train, but will do that next time we go. If you need your kids to blow off steam, there's a big grassy area for your kids to run around and there's a small park also for your kids to do "sledding". My kids aren't old enough yet, but would definitely return to allow them to run around. I'd recommend getting there early as parking gets filled up quickly and also it's $5 to park there.

The experience here, with 2 small kids, was decent.  You can pretty much walk the whole zoo in an hour, so I wouldn't plan on spending a whole day at the place.  Many of the exhibits have tight walkways, so it's a real pain to maneuver a stroller through it.  I found myself spending more time trying not to bump into people or moving out of the way so others could get by.  The train ride was a complete waste.  Most of the tracks run parallel to the freeway, so you basically see and hear the traffic clearly (while smelling all the fumes from the cars) on the left, while you see "some" animals on the right.  I couldn't help but laugh.  Not too many animals to see on this train ride, although you do get a good look at all the maintenance and health facilities, dumpster bins, and storage units.

Whenever I'm in Santa Barbara and I have few hours to kill on the weekend, I always enjoy visiting the zoo.

As zoos go, this one is quite nice. Just blocks from the beach, they offer quite a lot at this little zoo. Start by taking the train ride to see the full perimeter of the place, the walk counter-clockwise to see all the exhibits. Have some cash on hand so you can feed the giraffes. They allow you to picnic here at the zoo as well. You can also lay in the grass and just chill. There are a lot of smaller exhibits closer to the main entry. It is a fun place for all ages. Not thrill a minute type entertainment, but good wholesome family fun.

Someone told me it was all happening at the zoo. But we found that to be so untrue. No lions, tigers, rhinos or even capabaras, too. Just a couple of gibbons throwing poo.

We got there at opening hoping to catch feeding times but maybe the animals didn't get the word and we missed many of the stars of this cute, little zoo. I caught a brief glimpse of one of the silverbacks and saw a hidden lump of capabara. None of the big cats were out and most of the "Eeeww" exhibit remained unseen. Maybe that was a good thing, too.

The two gibbons howled and hooted in laughter.

Beware of "the gauntlet": the bridge that is covered in bird poo.
You'll probably be tempted to stop to visit the cute fox along this dangerous route, but that's just when it will happen.  White bombs from the sky will land on your unsuspecting shoulders.

Then when you make a bee line for the bathroom you'll find there are no paper towels.  Check another bathroom - strike two.  That's okay.  That's what men's bathrooms are for.  Just send your friend in to check in there for you...  Oh, wait.  You came here by yourself?  Who's genius idea was that?

I came here not expecting much and I came away with small touches of avian excrement all over my clothing.  Enjoy it, I did not.

As zoos go, the Santa Barbara Zoo is okay in my book. It's not so big that you need to spend an entire day here. Nor is it so small that you feel cheated out of your money. In Goldilock's terms: "It's just right."

I'm not a big fan a zoos, in general. I'm often saddened by the caged animals and the small amount of space in which they are enclosed. This is definitely the case (to me) with the lion exhibit here. However, the SB Zoo does manage to balance their cages with their open-air exhibits fairly well.

As a smaller zoo, it barely appeases adult animal lovers. But, from a kid's perspective, the SB Zoo is awesome. The exhibits, enclosures, and attractions are all within reasonable walking distance (for kids and adults). They've got a good selection of mammals, reptiles/amphibians, birds, fish, and insects/bugs. Since the enclosures are somewhat small, you're almost guaranteed a decent view of the animals. For the kids, it's great.

I did notice a few quirks, though. As Sarah K. points out, there aren't very many food/drink stands throughout the zoo. So, bring a water bottle with you and/or eat before dropping in. Also, try not to become frustrated with the sleeping animals that you know are there, but are snoozing in their dens. They were renovating several exhibits and sections of the zoo during our recent visit, so don't expect everything to be open.

This zoo may be small, but the grounds are lovely. It's perfect for a nice critter-full Sunday afternoon. This still gives you time for a nice brunch in the morn, a few mimosas and bloody marys, perusing the lovely art fair, and a nice dinner that night.

A section of the zoo was closed for remodeling or adding on, but that didn't take away from our time there. We happened upon feeding time for the red panda, the alligator, and the penguins. We stumbled upon medicine time for the elephants. All the workers were friendly and helpful.  We managed to see every animal.  Only the Snow leopard was fast asleep, but we still could see him.  All the animals seemed active and entertaining. Maybe we were entertaining to them. Many seemed to find us as interesting as we found them.

Giraffes, lions, gorillas, leopards, monkeys, lemurs,...the list goes on

The grounds are beautifully kept. Many park areas to sit and lounge or eat.  The room and board for the animals is also nice.  No depressing all cement captivity pits here.  There is a little train that will take you around the zoo and give you a little speech.  Unfortunately, we could understand NOTHING she said. Bad speakers, talking too low, or just recovering from wisdom tooth extraction, i don't know, but we still enjoyed giving our feet a rest and gazing at the view and ocean as we choo-chooed along.

My friend admitted later that he wasn't too keen on the zoo that I was so insistent on. But after the fact, he was impressed with this little gem of a zoo and glad we went.

So sad, the most famous critter at the Zoo has died. That's Gemina, the crooked neck giraffe, she was 21 years old.

The zoo itself is a nice place, I've been going there all my life and remember the days when small monkeys used to climb about in the trees above some picnic areas and try to nick your food.

But, as you can see by the fact that all the photos uploaded here are the giraffes - including one from me - Gemina was quite the attraction. She was euthanized on 10 Jan. after two weeks of declining appetite that reports say are consistent with the rigors of old age. Nothing to do with her crooked neck. Anyway, sorry to be the bearer of bad news. RIP, Gemina.

A cute little zoo that we like to visit at least once a month. They've redesigned the middle of the zoo, making a new kids play area and adding a new place to eat on top of the hill.

Highlights: Train, Elephants, Lions, Giraffes, Penguins, Gorillas

Our last trip, we got icecream before leaving. The guy in front of me in line was buying icecream for his kids too.  They gave him a receipt that said he gets 20% off his next purchase, so he gave it to me. After I bought the icecream and used his receipt to get the discount, I did the same by passing my receipt to the person behind me. A nice way to help others isn't it?

We Love the Santa Barbara Zoo.  It still is small enough to see all of the animals up close but large enough that they have animals that you don't see all of the time.  We go at least once a year and always enjoy it.  The elephant exhibit  was closed this trip.  The kids like to go on the train but it is kind of a waste of money.  You see the back of the buildings, nothing really exciting.  We will be back!
