6 reviews for Santa Anita Golf Course
This is my 'home course', commonly referred to as, "The 'Nita" (in my lexicon).
I can't give it 5-stars b/c it's a public course (as shallow as that may sound). - Given that fact, it is very well maintained. The fairways are in good shape, and the greens are superb, considering that it gets so much foot traffic.
The course itself plays harder than the yardage and slope would indicate. Once the par-3 renovations are complete (est. July '08), it will be niiice!
Pace of play is slow, especially on the weekends. This is due to a number of reasons.... 1) It's a nice public course at a great price 2) They allow 5-somes 3) Many of the 'locals' who live in Arcadia do not often display appropriate golf etiquette and fail to speed-up play when appropriate (not being able to speak English is an invalid excuse for rude conduct) 4) Along the same vein as #3, many golfers don't waive-up the group behind them on the par 3 holes. (the signs to do so are clearly displayed at each tee-box on the par 3s - - read it!)
Other than that....the course plays nicely and a smooth round w/out egregious delays should take about 4.5 hours.
My favorite hole is the par-5 #13. Nice dog-leg right off the tee-box. - Wide open 2nd shot towards the green. Tricky 3rd shot (...I can't get to the green in two)... green slopes off the back and has a nasty ridge at the bunker-side top of the green.... attempt for birdie.
The course has a park-like setting with wide tree-lined fairways. (Nice old-growth oaks as well as pine trees for all you arborists out there.) Bunkers are well placed and can get you in trouble, particularly the green-side bunkers at holes 5,14, and 17 (IMHO).
The staff are great! They are helpful, nice, and accommodating.
Food services are much better than one would expect, and they have a nice bar area off to the side of the cafe near the clubhouse.
"The 'Nita" is one of the best public golf options in all of the San Gabriel Valley, if not much of LA.
...Here's a little urban myth about Santa Anita (that some say is actually true), but supposedly there are rail-cars (either train or trolley) buried in the 18th fairway, which is apparently the reason for the large mounds. - - - know ya know.....

Good food, dude.
My dad's company started having their Christmas parties here last year and though, I don't like the banquet facilities, the food's pretty delicious.

Cheap
Challenging
Fun
The reasons why I like SA Golf Course is that it's cheaper than high rent courses. Just over 20 bucks to walk and 16 at twilight times. You should walk this course because it's relatively flat and it's always better to walk.
The course has plenty of challenging Par 4's. The longest at about 440 yards and the are a couple of drivable ones. But the challenge comes from the Augusta-like, Mackensie-ish crowned greens, where your ball tends to fall off. The fairways are quite wide and so it puts pressure on your approach game. Get it close and it will be an easy putt. C'mon, golf is an easy game.
I've heard that this course gets crowded and can be slow. It's a muni in a crowded city, what do you expect? Seriously, not all of us are members at the local CC. Anyways, try playing the course, if you're a 30 handicap, play from the white tees then it won't be that slow.
Course is in good condition, but sand isn't too good, very hard. Pace was average for your muni. Trees are starting to lose a few leaves and some wind will bring a bunch of brown leaves on the course so you may have trouble finding your ball on a couple of holes. Very green and nice for the most part. Tee'd off at 12:45 and was able to get 17 holes with light. Played the 18th with no light and did finish, but a lot of hit and run to search for the ball. Good fun.

another eastside, la county golf course.....can you see that i am a creature of habit?
santa anita golf course is another good and cheap course to play. this course is one of the better mainted courses and the grass is typically very lush and the dirt soft so that divots fly out nicely.
the fairways are pretty wide open like most of the other la county courses and the greens are pretty easy here. don't expect crazy breaks, hit it straight and you should be a-ok.
as with other county courses you ca bring your own grub and booze and stash it into the cart. however, since this course is in arcadia, expect it to be SUPER HOT during the summer time. i typically play this course from fall through spring and stay on the westside during the summer months.
a round typically plays reasonably quickly...i.e. 5ish hr rounds. however, once in a while you will be stuck behind some grandmas and the round will take upwards of 6hrs. aaah!!!
to sum it up, well mainted course, cheap round and lots of good chinese/taiwanses food within a 5 min drive.

One of my favorite regulation courses to play. Usually in excellent condition. It can get crowded on the weekend (5 to 5.5 hour rounds are common), and playing on the weekday (call in sick, if you can !) is a better time to enjoy this classic course.
