I'm really horrible at remembering sushi fish names.  But whatever their names, the two daily special nigiri's that they served us were delicious.

Unfortunately we followed that with a daily special poke, which as far as we could tell, was just their normal poke plus guacamole and jalapeño slices.  Now normally I do not complain about spicy food, as anyone who knows me will attest.  However those frickin' jalapeños were seriously spicy and by the time we finished the poke, we were chugging water and desperately willing anyone to come refill our water glasses.

Thus we concluded that eating any more delicious sushi would have been a lost cause that evening.  A mistake we will not repeat if/when we return.

I use to love this place. It was my first experience of miso buttah fish ever. everytime I come back to maui, th ursday  nights are reserved for this restaurant, however this  visit was  disappointment.
I ordered 4 buttah miso fish, shrimp dynamite, mushrooms, poke....all the food was average tonight.
A huge disappointment were the buttah fishes, they were cold, hard, and not fresh. I had them sent back to the  kitchen. The shrimp dynamite was pretty good but lcking some flavor, I added spicy sauce nd it tasted better.
Finally I got the fish orders and they were very saucy and salty....still good but not the usual great.
I would still recommend to go after 10 for the half off sushi. Lots of fun. Plus there's karoke. Lol

Unlike on Oahu, on Maui, we looked like minorities in every restaurant we ate. Hell, even the waitstaff at most of the eateries I went to were haole. We'd chat people up and learned that everyone was a transplant. Berkeley, Colorado, Massachusetts. Where the heck do all the locals hang out, eat and drink? Well, we found out. And it appears to be at Sansei...but only after 10PM for the 50% off happy hour.

Late at night, this place turns into moke central. If you are a large Portagee, Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, hapa haole, Tongan, Hawaiian wearing a baseball cap with a button up short sleeve shirt and have tats, then you are probably hanging out here getting all crunk on Galvatrons and singing White Sandy Beach on the karaoke machine.

The 50% off happy hour is somewhat misleading, as it is for sushi and select appetizers only. A two piece nigiri order is $8 here, which makes the discount price, the normal price for a two piece nigiri anywhere else in the world. Small ups to Sansei for using real crab instead of surimi in their rolls. As stated in other reviews, they tack on a 17% surcharge, probably because most people are too stupid to realize that the tip is supposed to be based on your pre-discount bill, and not after the discount is taken off. I can't blame Sansei for protecting its waitstaff by doing this.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not even a big fan of Sansei in Waiks. But the price is right, the drinks flow, and karaoke is a go, so Sansei is 'aite.

We came early, 5:30, and the restaurant filled up quickly. This was our first visit to Sansei and we started with the Panko Crusted Ahi sashimi specialty and some very nice garlic shrimp bruschetta with fresh cherry tomato. The swordfish special of the night on mashed potatoes with asparagus was excellent. The lychee martini was a treat. Go there.

If you're a sushi snob, the raw fish is just ok.  If you like izakaya, then you're in luck.  The miso butterfish, roasted eggplant, and panko crusted ahi roll were all really good.  We got the yellowtail, tuna, and scallop (the small ones in mayo, they had no hotate) sushi and they were all just ok.  Definitely go for the late night, half-off menu.  The GF and I feasted last Sat.  Had we paid full price ($120+), we'd a felt ripped off.  The late night happy hour made for an awesome meal.  The karaoke was f'ing awful and loud enough that you can't avoid it, so just keep drinking and maybe it'll sound better.

This review is actually for the one in Lahaina. If you want a spot for happy hour you gotta make reservations. It's only 25% off certain things on menu from 5-6pm so not much of a deal. We later found out the steal was from 10-1 am when food is 50% off everything and karaoke. Bummed we didn't know sooner.
Anyway the food was delicious as most of the fish were local and fresh. The also here was ok typical sushi house with a bar on one end. I'd definitely go back but do the happy hour late night

Whether your craving delicious rolls or a cooked rare speciality, Sansei truly has it all. The menu is changing daily. I came here 2 nights in a row, both nights features different specials.

One night they had my favorite, Hamachi Kama ( Yellowtail Collar ) served with ponzu sauce, white rice, and a salad.

    Other creative specials include:

The Japanese Hamachi and grilled shittakke mushroom tartar with truffled soy sauce, orange tobiko, and Shiso Chiffonade 13$

Hawaiian Moi Rolls sashimi drizzled with ponzu truffle reduction 13$

    Tempura Ono

    White Tuna carpaccio with jalapeno

    Miso Sweet Butterfish

For Vegetarians, an assortment of veggie rolls are available. Cucumber avocado, roasted vegetable with shitakke mushroom, veggie tempura rolls, and classic raw veggie.

The Sake selection is vast in that they have a variety of fruity, dry, and unfiltered.

This was my favorite restaurant on the island!  Came here for dinner and it felt like we tasted everything on the menu. The Panko Crusted Ahi Sashimi Sushi Roll
was the best!  We finished one and ordered another:) The ginger hoisin Duck Breast
was also pretty tasty - great flavor! Service was on point  and the atmosphere was lively.  We decided to stick with Sake Bombs, but there's a full bar with a huge selection. They have great specials for early diners - unfortunately we were too lazy to make it in time.

Great bartenders with fantastic hard liquor selection.
Friendly wait staff who is happy to recommend their favorite rolls and entrees.
The peppered New York steak was a favorite at our table.
Save room for dessert as you'll want to try the apple-tart it's burnt caramel sauce is incredible.

Great Service, great food and a great time. Really enjoyed this. Very busy parking lot and restaurant in Kihei. They seated our party of 8 quickly as we had a reservation but other walk in had a 10 minute wait or 20. I think they had 20 or 25% off many menu items up until 6pm which made this place a fantstic deal. The sushi was just marvelous and the kids menu's were alos good. Great place for family sushi!

We came here with friends of the family a couple days before Christmas and had a fantastic meal. I'm super-picky so I stuck mostly with beef and chicken dishes, but everything looked amazing!

Food is out of this world. I would focus more on their specialty dishes (especially award winners) over generic dishes/sushi rolls that you could get anywhere else. The wait is always crazy (make reservations no matter what, but you usually still have to wait a significant amount of time)...the service is hit or miss. Best dish in my opinion is the panko crusted ahi sashimi...delish!

They have a late night happy hour on the weekends starting at 10pm where most dishes are 1/2 off...well worth it!

My wife and I just left Sansei, Kapalua. Our first visit was in the late 90's when the Kapalua Bay Hotel was still there. It was a great experience-we tried Panko crusted Ahi for the first time and it was fabulous! Since then, we have been several times-some good and some just so-so. We decided to sit at the cocktail bar even though we had reservations. It turned out to be a great decision...Trudy and "Noodles" were fantastic-friendly and knowledgable. We started with the Panko Ahi and also had 2 recommendations that Trudy had mentioned-spicy Hamachi and Cajun spiced Escalar-both very worth treats! They have several discounted times-early and late-check the website for details. If you have the chance, sit at the cocktail bar and let Trudy and her side kick "Noodles" hook you up! You won't be sorry-promise!

Sansei is an excellent sushi joint.

We started with sunomono (ebi), miso soup and sweet potato tempura. I love yam tempura and the sweet potato was delightful. I'm accustomed to having rice noodles in sunomono, but theirs had only cucumber. Nonetheless, the vinegar wasn't too strong or too sharp, with a great flavor.

Truly the yummiest part of the meal was the local tuna sashimi, and although we had 2 orders we could have had 2 more. Our server was able to provide great insight in to the menu and we had a southwestern poke - which was scrumptious and the highlight of the meal for me.

The rainbow roll and spicy tuna roll were also good - although other items were, for me, more standout. Food and service-wise, we were very happy.

The biggest obstacle was waiting in a giant line and then not getting in initially (we waited 15 minutes and then they were able to accommodate us but others waited much longer). The line waiting for them to open also has implications for the kitchen, so the food takes a while to come out (so be ready). Although I understand it's outside their control (and they did well handling it), it was the least enjoyable part of the overall experience. It was enough of a pain that without a reservation I'd probably avoid it in the future.

My advice: get a reso and bring your patience. Their yummy mai tais will help with the latter.

It must be a sin that a sushi restaurant in HAWAII has fish that isn't fresh. How is that even possible? Did they forget that the ocean is in their backyard?

This place is a tourist trap and was our least memorable meal during our almost two weeks on Maui and Kauai. If you must come here, stay away from the sashimi and order the rolls.

I believe the sashimi we ordered made us sick. When we ate it, the texture seemed strange, a bit mushy and slimy. We ignored the warning signs and paid for it in the end!

Dynamite shrimp was very tasty, spicy, sweet and sour, fried.

Ordered the miso soup and sweet potato tempura for appetizers.  We would normally order vegetable tempura, but the last time we ordered that they put a lot of asparagus.  The sweet potato was a little dry and the batter was lacking a bit.  I ordered the pan-crusted macadamia nut mahimahi (I think that is what it was called).  This dish was ABSOLUTELY delicious.  The crust was so crunchy and the mahi was tender.  This was served on top of mashed potatoes (odd combo, I thought, but the potatoes were good).  My husband had the Ono and the fish was a bit tough.  This dish came with rice.  Both dishes came with mixed vegetables.

I would definitely go here again and order the mahimahi.

I had a great time here hosting my wedding rehearsal dinner.

Ambience - a bit louder than I'd like.  We tried to make a speech but it was hard to hear us, we still tried and because the owner was able to put us off to the side, we were able to get everyone sit together so that was nice

Food - The miso butterfish is what I'd come back for.  If I can make it back to Maui, that'll be one of the first places I'd stop!

Service - They were super attentive and the service is fast.  We enjoyed our food and the staff was very friendly

Well, I am not sure what the fuss is all about as this place is just okay in my book.  It is cheap though I have to say but as for the taste, it is just A-OK.  I have to admit that I am a little bit of a sushi snob though so please do take my comment with a grain of salt.

Maybe my expectation is too high due to the high yelp review score and the fact that Maui is @#%$#% island.  I was totally hoping to be blown away but instead I was being recommended these sushi creations crap instead of a real sushi course.  That's when I know I am not in the right place..when the sushi chef is peddling me rolls instead of sushi.

Final verdict is unless you are craving sushi in Maui, it is probably better to skip this place as there are so many better food choice in Maui.

My wife and I came here twice and though the sushi is well prepared, it certainly reminds me of the Korean owned sushi establishments in LA. That is, very gimmicky combinations that appeal to the broader audience rather than the experienced sushi palate. In fact, the Japanese couple next to us said the sushi was "meh". If u can't impress the Japanese, it's probably just average at best. The cuts of fish are extremely thin. The rainbow roll I order had thin slivers of fish in what was almost entirely a California roll! For the less discriminating palate, sansei is satisfactory. For us, it was just mediocre at best. In the end, you pay for more fluff than actual fish. Any sushi afficionado will feel ripped off if they eat here.

For a Japanese owned establishment, Sansei was a huge disappointment. Sixteen bucks for a Rainbow, err...California roll is certainly an outrageous price for a misrepresentation!  Where's the FISH???

Specialties noted on their menu so I feel there is no need to list. Came here for my birthday and the place was packed, a good sign of things to come?

For appetizers we had the panko crusted fresh ahi sashimi-wrapped in arugula and spinach. Rated #1 and won awards to give it a shot, the panko crusted was flash fried and arrived hot. As a entree, we had the sashimi with spicy tuna.

The place is quite big with friendly waitresses that are pleasant. The Asian fusion was a delight.

SO i read a lot of reviews about this restaurant and their award winning dishes. i went there i guess with high expectations. first of all let me say service is nice, it has a nice parking lot and near by after dinner if you want to get a few drinks, there is two popular local bars near by.
Basically the FOOD was not that great. Their award winning shrimp bomb is terrible, chinese walnut prawns taste 100 times better than this. i aways thought hawaii had huge shrimps. these were smaller than the meat coming out of a crawdad. i swear it was just all batter. next was the ahi sashimi roll. yes another award winning roll. its not that good. its fresh ahi tuna dont get me wrong but its just ahi tuna wrapped in lettuce with rice around it with some sweet sauce around it. over rated!!!!!
the fried ice cream was probably the best part of the meal. it was a huge chunk of ice cream with a lot of breading around it.......

OVER RATED!!! TRY THE PLACE OUT BUT DONT GO WITH HIGH EXPECTATIONS LIKE I DID FOR THE FOOD. BETTER PLACES TO EAT

My last meal on Earth would have to be the Chef's Tasting Menu here.  On my first and only trip to Maui thus far, we came here on the recommendation of a few friends.  First night we arrived, boyfriend and I searched for this place, with high expectations.  Walked in to a super busy crowd, but  to our delight, there wasn't too long of a wait.  The menu selection was huge with so much variety.  We were so hungry and just wanted to order quickly so we went with the Chef's Tasting Menu, which had a little bit of everything that was "award-winning."  With each bite, I could understand why each was award-winning.  EVERYTHING was soooo delicious!  We noticed the other couples around us who had ordered the same thing and they all looked quite satisfied.  Service was nice and friendly!  No complaints at all!

Aaaah, I can still remember each savory bite.  During our trip to Maui, we had tried out other recommended restaurants, but kept missing this place.

Wow. My first one star review. Currently I am fully reclined, just took some stomach medicine and am seriously considering pulling the trigger to get this food OUT of my body (that means self-induced vomit folks).

Where to even begin...This was my second trip to Sansei in the last week - the first time we tried a few of the "award winners" and were really disappointed. Calamari salad and shrimp cake...both were pretty foul; we felt like were at a shitty Chinese place eating really terrible fried food covered in sweet, fruit flavored sauce.

I came back with my dear friend who just got married and had lived on Maui for 23 years - she remembered Sansei being really good so I thought maybe we had just ordered the wrong things?! Nope. This place is just that bad.

The issei combination had maguro, hamachi, shake, tako and shiromi nigiri with a spicy tuna roll - the nissei combo had about the same but with shrimp and a california roll. We also ordered the panko crusted ahi wrapped in arugula - this was the #1 super best seller apparently. Miso butterfish, special crab mango roll, tempura dinner and udon were on the table as well.

For starters, the crab is not crab. It is imitation crab. I get it, its cheaper, crab isn't local etc etc. At least put it on the menu!!!!! The super awesome crab mango special roll? $13 for FAKE CRAB. The california roll actually tasted like it came out of a can. Absolutely awful. The spicy tuna roll was worse - about the color of poi (or $*@# depending on who you ask), it was tasteless and the texture was revolting. Wow. The miso butterfish was ... meh, just okay. The panko crusted ahi w/ arugula had NO ARUGULA and there was literally no flavor at all, not even in the sauce that covered the entire plate. The nigiri was even scary. The salmon was a bit rubbery, the hamachi was a few too many shades of the wrong color. To top this off they actually served all the sushi on plates that had JUST COME OUT OF THE WASH!!! I guess I should be thankful that they were clean but serving raw fish on hot plates?? That's just silly.

The sushi bar and kitchen are on different tickets so the tempura dinner came out before my friend who'd ordered it was even done with her salad. We had to send it back and ask them to re-fire it when she was done! Nothing better than soggy tempura......Our waitress was nice enough but she left dirty (plastic) plates on the table multiple times between refilling water glasses.

Sansei seems to have had a serious fall from grace. They advertise on their menu the awards and recognitions they've received and many of them ARE FROM 4-10 YEARS AGO. It's almost as if the chef is still trying to ride the coattails of those previous awards and just doesn't even CARE about the quality of food he's serving - honestly I think he should be ashamed :/

Yeah, its more affordable than other sushi places on the island but please, I beg you....do yourself a favor, cough up the extra 20-30 bucks and go somewhere else!

    When: 8/4/11 dinner
    Location: Kiehi, Maui, HI
    Party of: 6
Scene: Loud, busy hot spot filled with locals and tourists alike. Surprisingly located in a strip mall. Don't judge a book by it's cover.
Decor: L-shaped main dining area with glass table tops filled with scrapbook photos of their food. Bar area is full service as well for smaller parties.
    Service: friendly, helpful, attentive
    Cuisine: Asian fusion.
If you are from SF: if you like the House, you'll LOVE sansei!!!
Devour: menu is lengthy, limit yourself to the Award winning items in the box. Can't go wrong. Order 2 items, portions may not be as filling as you expect
    Damage: $160
Quick tip: sansei means third generation. Fitting for the restaurant cuisine. Traditional Japanese with an modern American twist. A must try in Maui, Waikiki and Kona. Would've eaten here every night. It was that good.

Went for the early bird special so we could try more.

Best Ahi tuna roll I have ever had. Would recommend the panko crusted ahi tuna roll, teriyaki beef, duck rolls and shrimp dynamite. Worth waiting for the early bird so you can try everything and still get out without spending $100 with a few drinks.

Strangely, the BEST and WORST meal I had in Maui.

Went on Monday for their 1/2 off happy hour. Even at that rate, within an hour racked up an bill of $130 for two =)  Sit at the sushi bar, you'll get your dishes faster and be able to eat more at the discounted rate until 7.

Along with the staples (tuna, mackeral, ame ebi, salmon), the following here absolute YUMS:

: Miso butterfish - must get
: Ahi carpaccio with cucmbers -  refreshing
: Crab ramen with truffle oil - very rich broth, nice way to end the meal
: The Ikura here is some of the best I've had - nice and fresh, amazing with a quail egg on top.

    The UMS:
: The Foie Gras nigiri. Looks impressive, but NOT WORTH $17 for two pieces of small, overcooked foie gras on rice.  I just came back from living in France, so I should have known better than to order Foie Gras here.
: The Panko Crusted Ahi Roll - Really, I don't know what all the rave is about - its nothing special at all. I would totally skip this one.

THEN I went back the next day just for the uni, because they had run out on Monday, and Tuesday was when they get their fresh delivery. I am an uni fanatic. When asked, the waitress said it was really good.

    DUMS:
: Uni shooters. $10 each, small, and the sake just masks the bad uni
: Uni nigiri - didn't look right, and didn't taste right. I told the waitress but she didn't do anything about it.

ALERT About 2 hours later I felt nauseous and threw up! The next day, I had diarrhea and it just happened to be the day we did the Road to Hana! Man, it sucked. It was a good thing I had anti-diarrhea pills in my medicine pack. Maybe it was just a bad batch, but just be careful!

This place is located inside a small strip mall across the street from a park so it can be difficult to spot. We watched the sunset at the park and then headed over to the restaurant and was seated right away. If you are looking for a romantic, quiet place to enjoy with your loved one, this is not the place. It's bustling with a lot of kids and families who are on vacation on Maui.

We ordered several dishes which came out promptly:

Japanese Calamari Salad: Nothing special. The sauce was too sweet and thick IMO but it comes on top of a bed of mixed greens which goes well with the calamari.

Poke Salad: This was my favorite dish! It comes with sweet Maui onions which gives it that crunch that I love about poke salad. It also comes with some greens which makes it easier to eat. I recommend this if you want a small appetizer which is big enough to share with 2-3 people.

Sansei Special Roll: This roll has cilantro in it which is very unique. Also inside is spicy crab and fresh veggies which was nothing too special as well. It comes with furikake on top as well as a side of a sweet Thai chili sauce which gives it a nice kick. Interesting flavors but NOT a must-have.

Takah Sushi Special Roll: Comes with shrimp, crab, ahi, avocado, and cucumber with masago on top. This was a typical sushi roll that you can most likely find in other sushi places. Nothing spetacular.

Overall, this place was too loud and busy for my family. If you have small children or are looking for a place to get some sashimi and appetizers while drinking beers and sake, this would be a great place for you. I most likely won't be coming back unless I'm with friends and were finding a place to get tipsy at an affordable price.

We've been coming here for years - look forward to it almost as much as the Sunsets, but sadly, the years have finally caught up with the place.  The rolls were mushy - not appetizing or appealing. Flavor was off.  The server kept referring to carafes of sake as "Carafts".  Yikes.

It's possible they were having a way-off night (WAY off), but it was off enough to convince us to look elsewhere on the island for good sushi.

Our experience here was disappointing.   I've had better sushi from many other restaurants without the accolades this one has received.

The pros:  surprisingly, the simple hawaiian roll.   The fish was fresh and it wasn't drowning in sweet and sour sauce.

The rainbow roll was just ok.  The avocado was starting to brown and as another reviewer indicated the imitation crab salad in the middle was disappointing.

The cons:  Hands down the spider roll (a must try per their menu).  The tempura was COLD and chewy like it'd been fried several hours earlier and then thrown into a roll.    Additionally, it was served on sweet and sour sauce.  My partner took one bite and cringed.  Very, very disappointing.

The crab mango roll also disappointing.  Award winning?  How?  Nothing spectacular given the three diced pieces of mango and 3 peanuts on the plate of sweet & sour sauce.    And yes, there were exactly 3 pieces of each.

Honestly, I'd suggest trying other restaurants in the area.   This wasn't worth the money.

This place was as good as expected based on the reviews I have read. Great service, little packed but manageable and excellent fresh sashimi and sushi. I have to say I expected the food to be a bit more expensive. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't cheap, but being used to paying more for good sushi I expected this place to be about 20% pricier, though glad it wasn't . We spent about $120 for 2 people including drinks.  Parking is easy, location is great, grocery store next door and local market kiosks located next door to wonder around after nice dinner. You may want to make a reservation here, especially on weekends. I can't say that this was the best sushi I have ever had (I am spoiled having lived in NY and SF), but surely it was up there. Solid 4 stars baby.

I walked in without a reservation on a random Sunday around 5:30pm and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of folks in here. I waited about 5 minutes for a table and was seated at the sushi bar, upon my request. The service was lovely and the food was delicious.  Below is a list of the menu items I enjoyed.

*Matsuhisa Style Miso Butterfish- Tender butterfish marinated and seared in sake and sweet miso. This was unbelievably good and flaky. The best!

*Seared Foie Gras Nigiri Sushi- Lightly seared foie gras served with caramelized Maui onions, ripe mango and rich unagi glaze drizzle. This was most excellent and comes with two rather large pieces of foie gras.

Overall, a lovely meal in a nice restaurant with a great ambiance. I'll definitely stop here next time I'm in town.

QUICK TIP- 50% OFF Early Bird Special Sun & Mon from 5-6pm. I took advantage of this and it was quite nice. Beware that this cannot be applied to all menu items.
