My boyfriend and I were thoroughly pleased with our night at Sanford House over Memorial Day. The hosts, Dorsey and Bob, were super accommodating and genuinely personable - upon our arrival, which was earlier than expected, they immediately gave us a complimentary 1/2 bottle of local wine and chocolate, which we enjoyed in their quaint garden under a cherry tree. Dorsey is also one helluva cook; I've never had a better scone.

Having been built in 1904, the house itself is showing a little wear, but it's still very comfortable. My only minor complaint is that $150/night seems a teensy bit expensive for the area. I wouldn't hesitate to go back, though, because I would rather give more money to a local business person than less to a motel on the highway.

And did I mention that scone!?

I feel like I discovered a secret gem in Ukiah this week.  I felt so comfortable at the Sanford House, and so well taken care of.  It's a huge, gorgeous old Victorian, the owners live there and host B&B guests.  I have stayed at B&B's where I've felt cramped and uncomfortable, but the Sanford House is homey, welcoming, and private, all at the same time.  And Dorsey, the owner/chef, creates the best gourmet-organic-local-food-inspired breakfast I've ever had. I am not exaggerating.  Every day, she serves a fresh fruit smoothie and an inventive main course; in my 3 day stay, she served:  1) incredible homemade walnut-orange scones with fresh fruit and honey butter, followed by a poached egg with pesto on an english muffin; 2)  the best crepes I've ever had, perfectly cooked with fresh local fruit., and 3)  a perfectly moist omelet with jack cheese and pinto beans-- an inventive combination that melts in your mouth.  The rooms are private -- each has its own private bath and ample space, very sweetly decorated without being overly pretentious or frilly, and the bed was firm and comfortable.  The gardens surrounding the house and the spacious front porch are also lovely and peaceful.  I will go back!
