3 reviews for Sandy's Snack Bar
Sandy's was awesome. Great ocean view, good quick service...and fair prices....I got a cheeseburger, a large drink and a lobster roll for under $20.
Location is on route 3A south of Plymouth Center , if you hit the Plymouth Sands motel you've come to far, you turn left into the driveway for the plymouth beach just after you cross the Eel River, you'll see Stoneforge restaurant up ahead. Turn left just after the river crossing.
Its a cool place. There's changing rooms and bathrooms there for the beach. Most stuff is under $10 but remember seafood will be between $11-20 depending on the kind and the season.
Sandy's has a pretty nice little spot for itself at the end of Plymouth Beach. Their prices are fair although if you're driving you'll have to pony up 15 dollars (on the weekend) just to park your car and look at the menu.
The lobster roll wasn't bad though it was a bit heavy on the mayo and the filler. The few good chunks that found their way in there were tasty though. My main beef is with the fried clams. They are up there on the list of the worst fried clams I've ever had. And I've had a lot of fried clams.
When the girl at the window asked if I wanted whole clams I said, "Yeah, big bellies if you got them." Now I didn't really expect expect a full plate of big bellies like you might find in Essex, but I sure as hell didn't expect the plate of dark brown, greasy, crunchy, burnt tasting leftovers that I got.
Compared to these stringy, chewy bits of gristle (if fried clams can have gristle, that's what I felt like I was eating), the fries weren't bad.
It is hard to beat the view at Sandy's and there's something to be said for eating your lunch while curling your toes in the sand. While the tables were impressively clean, the area could use some raking to get rid of the numerous cigarette butts. There's a full bar here as well, which is something most of these places lack -- maybe if I was drunk I would have liked the food a bit more.
Every year Sandy's gets a little bit nicer, so consequently, every year Sandy's gets a little bit busier. Fortunately, each addition only makes the wait, well, more worth the wait.
This little hut began as just that, a little hut serving quick food on Plymouth beach. Hot dogs, cheeseburgers, lobster rolls, the kind of food you could eat while sitting on the beach wall. Then slowly they expanded their patio, adding tables. This added food that could be plated. Then there was the beer and wine. This encouraged more table sitting, which thus encouraged more plate-able food. Then came the awning, which added more tables, in addition to a shelter from the warm sun, and all of the sudden, our little shack became a beach side hot spot.
Note that the actual "restaurant" portion is still the little shack. This means counter service, and at times, a bit of a wait as only so much can be done at a time in a small space. But where else can you sip a beer, munch on some delicious seafood, and literally overlook the beach, all while sporting a wet bathing suit, a sunburned nose, and some flip flops?
Sandy's is open pretty late into the evening (8ish maybe?). The good news about this is that they stop checking for stickers after 5, so you can drive on down without worrying about having to make your $10 donation to the Town of Plymouth. But if you're craving a beachside meal earlier than 5, just park in the parking lot before the beach entrance and mosey on down the beach wall. You'll be glad you did.
