sandy point has its high points and low points.

highs:
-it's close. and before the bay bridge toll.
-you can fish there. and actually catch stuff! we got lots of spot and a few perch.
-families with kids have many options between the playground and splish splashing around the beach and grilling and hanging out at a picnic table.
-the beach has lifeguards.
-the bathhouse has showers

lows:
-you have to pay per person to get in
-the "sand" on the beach is more like "dirt"
-you can fish, but there's no pier. only dangerous rock jetties and fishing from the shore. and the jetties are reeeeaaallly far from the rest of the action.
-there are lots of jellyfish. the sign at the entrance says so.
-it can get pretty crowded. we went on a saturday and virtually all the picnic tables were taken for the whole day.

so i'd say it's a pretty straight-down-the-middle average kind of a place. depending on your needs, though, this place could work out quite well.

TIPS FOR MILITARY: active duty military people can get in for free. not dependents though.

ALSO FOR MILITARY: typically in md, to fish, you need to buy a fishing license... but if you're active duty, your orders can count as your license-- so that's free!

FOR FAMILIES: kids in carseats also get free entrance.

This park and marina is one of the closest beaches to the DC area so it's worth checking out if you are craving some sand and sun. The marina seemed to close kind of early for boat rental so make sure you do that earlier in the day. There's a place where you can boat around that's separate from the bay swimming area. The swimming area is on a beach that's facing the bay bridge - it's not the most calming of views, but if sand and sun are what you want, this works. That's why I can only give it 3 stars. There's also fishing a little ways down the shore from the swimming. If you get tired of swimming, there's a hiking trail and sports fields. You do have to pay a small fee to get in the park which always annoyed me because it's a state park so why should you have to pay? That aside, it's a fun relaxing way to spend the day.

I've never cared for Sandy Point, a constructed beach full of jellyfish on the Chesapeake just off the Bay Bridge. Seriously, just drive the extra 1.5-2 hours to the eastern shore and enjoy a fill-up at a cheap gas station along the way. At least the trashiness of Ocean City has some redeeming qualities!
