10 reviews for Sandy Beach
Great to see that most reviews are from locals... This was one of my FAVORITE beaches when I was living in Honolulu and even to date when we go back to visit this is our preferred beach on West Side.
Be warned....do NOT attempt to surf/boogie/body board at this beach unless you are seasoned because you could get seriously hurt or even drown!
Here's a few tips about Sandys.
Know how to duck dive.
Know what you're doing!
When in doubt don't go out! READ THE SIGNS!
Strong undertow sometimes and yeah this is one of my favorite beaches to go to. I see pro bodyboarders here like Spencer Skipp, Dubb and Hubb, really good area to bodyboard BUT what sucks is when there's alot of locals and tourists.... especially tourists though.
I mean it's kool that you're here but when we're catching a wave please dive... don't just look at me when I'm heading straight for you. This place can get pretty competitive but I share the waves, i won't hog it all. Aside from it being a very good beach to bodyboard even people who know what they're doing can get messed up. This beach is kinda unpredictable, but it's still a good place to bust out air =0) The flags are ALWAYS up, just because it's flat it doesn't mean it's necessarily safe. I saved to Japanese tourists there one time. They had an expression like "please! i need help" I offered my bodyboard and brought them back to shore.
Anyways I'll leave this review with one of my favorite sayings.
"The best things in life are done laying down. That's why I bodyboard."

I personally did not get in to the water because it was so rough, but my boyfriend and his friend did body surf for awhile. You definitely need to be a good swimmer to get in there. What I liked though was the lifeguards were very attentive to the people in the water and sent out warnings many times when the water was getting rougher than usual. Probably not the best place to take young children though because the current is so strong and you can get swept up while playing on the sand.
Evening session.
Middles. 3'-5' Hawaiian. Crowd dwindling faster than the light.
Light offshores, but without the accompanying scent.
1000 watts of Jawaiian blasting from the lifted '88 4Runner on Super Swampers.
Back Set, Chiihuu! In early, clean drop, smooth bottom turn, no drop-in...fat pit.
Too dark, even with the headlights, catch one more in.
Coldest shower in the World. "Kimo Kimo, Skima, Da Rude Boy, Newa Ewa" forever etched in the concrete.
Tailgate. Cold Bud Light. Contact high from the recently released chamber in the parking lot.
Ahhh, Sandy's. (fine print) Actual experience may differ.

I LOVE SANDY BEACH!
However...be warned.
If you are NOT a seasoned wave rider or body surfer, don't every think about going here without leaving your last will and testament on your hotel television. You MAY DIE if you do not know these waters well enough to take them on, and if the lifeguards are off duty.
That said, this is an AWESOME beach for one of two things.
1) Body surfing.
or
2) Watching your husband get his bathing suit pummeled off of his body by some seriously high tides.
Watch out for the strong rip currents. They will "tear you asunder." No kidding.
Or at least it will tear your bathing suit asunder. I saw a couple of old Australian ladies give the beach crowd a nudie show, free of charge!

Sandy Beach is located on the Southeastern shore of Oahu that is known for it's devastating shorebreak and consistent surf that are generated by the tradewinds.
While the primary surf zone is the shorebreak that primarily belong to the bodysurfers and bodyboarders, there are some spots within Sandy's that help surfers get through the long summer months.
On the right day, Gas Chambers, Cobbles, Middles and Pipe Littles can provide some awesome summertime fun. However, please be careful, as the currents and riptides can get dangerous, especially on a large day.
If you aren't comfortable in these rough conditions, it would be best to stay out of the water. Sandy Beach is notorious for spinal injuries. You can still have a fun time watching the experienced riders enjoy the waves.

This is the only beach I've visited on Oahu where I did not step foot in the water.
This the beach where my skin went from natural island skin to a color my mom would yell at me for being in the sun too long.
This is the beach where all I did here was sit on the beach while I watched the man get tossed by waves over and over.
Kristina R. has the whole beach totally on point.
i love body boarding. get raped by waves.
love hurts.

really soft sand, really rough shore break, and an extra star for the random topless chick holding a ukulele photo shoot... well i guess in hawaii a topless chick with a ukulele shouldn't really be considered random, eh?
