Underneath my clothes is my skin.
Underneath my skin is my heart.
Underneath my heart is ...

I'm a failed Catholic, more out of choice than lack of trying. I don't know the answers. On certain days, I'm certain that something bigger and smarter must be keeping me in a protective bubble. But I also have days when I stare blankly out the nearest window and all I see is just endless, senseless nothing.

I don't have a regular house of worship, though my parents do, but I found out years ago that even when we're in that house at the same time, we're not participating in exactly the same game. And that's OK, for me. Maybe my parents would disagree.

But if I could name a place I find representative of all that is powerful and unpredictable and possibly even holy, it would be somewhere along Sandy Beach. I've seen countless sunrises on the sand, as the early morning winds volleyed my hair back and forth with the pull of the waves. I danced hula to welcome in the light once. I've seen it appear and reversed the practice, setting all my wishes for myself and for the people I know in its snare. And I don't pray too often - as clueless as I am about the answers, I have a suspicion that the truth doesn't grow itself in hypocrisy - but I heard the mantra above spoken by a clinician who's worked with victims of serious emotional and physical trauma, and it's almost as handy as a spreadsheet when you need a tally of why any of this is. I just hope that anyone I hold under my heart knows that I would want my remains dumped in here. I'd rather they have something undeniably gorgeous and potentially cataclysmic to look at if they want to visit. None of that manicured lawn crap for me, thanks.

But for the love of whatever you love, don't swim here. If you're anything like me, you don't need an excuse to seek your answers prematurely.

We adore this beach...it's gorgeous, scenic and truly sandy. It's a short drive from Waikiki/Honolulu (less than 30 min) and have a fairly large parking lot, public bathrooms, and lifeguards actively on duty. Crowded, but not as jam packed as the Waikiki beach.

However, do take the "strong current" and "no swimming" signs seriously. We learned our lesson the hard way; my husband lost his glasses in the waves and spent the rest of the vacation half blind...

In short, this beach inspires me to take up surfing. I'll add the last star when that day finally comes...

Sandy's literally has SHORE break.  8 - 15 years ago I could go and swim around no problem if it was small to medium surf, even with the crazy strong tide.  But then one day I had the bright idea of trying to catch waves with my boogie board (yes, BOOGIE board).  Um, so I caught a wave, and it planted me on dry land.  Had the wind knocked out of me!  Yeah, SHORE break.  Not doing that again.

When the sibs were little my family used to hang out by all the tide pools catching little fish and hermit crabs.  Fun times.

I heard many good things about Sandy Beach. Scenic. Sandy. And it's easy to find since it is on a major highway close to Honolulu.

There it is! I know i have found it! There's an ambulance in the parking lot!

Sandy has the best shorebreak bodysurfing and bodyboarding in Hawaii. But only for the pros. The locals know the danger. Tourists see the kids in the water and ignore the signs "Dangerous Shorebreak" and "Strong Current". That's why Sandy has the most accidents of all the beaches on Oahu.

I stayed out of the water.

Always a MUST when the crew visits oahu.  Definitely my favorite beach on the island.  90% locals, and the rest wannabe locals like moi.  Waves can pound yer ass if youre not careful.  Lifeguards will scold and tell you to get the F$CK outta the water if they see your tourist ass even attempt to go out.  SERIOUSLY.  Waimea is another fav, but thats a long ass drive to the north shore.  Otherwise, great talent to browse.

Again, dont go in the water if youre not experienced.  You WILL look like a jackass.....

Aww, Sandy beach! I read on a travel guide that Sandy Beach is only for expert surfers and what not. But if you ask me-- Sandy Beach is freakin' hella fun! Hella locals go here just to chill/swim.

My family and I spent all of our free time here. We loved it...

One time my cousin and I were weight boarding and we went HELLA far from the shore that the lifegaurd had to CALL us in. I was scared off my ass! but luckily we got back to shore safely!

Not as much tourist as Waikiki, i'd go here for some family fun anyday!

Sandy Beach is the stuff dreams are made of.

The first picturesque beach you reach as you drive to the North Shore, it has a wide, grassy lawn, a wide sandy beach, and waves.

Big waves.  The surf was up this week, so we didn't play in the water.  Maybe next time.

A beach in Honolulu with actual waves?  Yes.  I was amazed.  I was bored with the calm pool-like ocean of Waikiki, so we took a little road trip around the island.  Our first stop was at this beach.  The waves do crash right on shore, but that's what they're supposed to do.  If you pay attention while you're walking in/out of the ocean, you won't "pound sand" and everything will be fine.

I did overhear the locals talking about how they hate tourists, and it made me think of going to my local beach in San Diego and saying the same thing.

Great body surfing. Great barrels to ride. Experienced only. Beginers/newbee's just watch please.

Sandy's is also known as Break Neck Beach. The shorebreak and
tides can be hazardous to your health. If you are not local or President Obama maybe you should just watch. ; - )

A false negative is it's a locals only beach, nothing but trouble. Not so..but as if your visiting a friends house, respect.

Tourist keep a eye on your kids. Pay attention to the beach warning signs and life guards. These are very dangerous waters to non-local kids.

THE BEST bodyboarding I did while on Oahu.  I had always heard it was mostly a locals only beach, but hell, just about all the beaches on Oahu are.  Don't disrespect anyone, just like anywhere else in the world, and you'll be fine.  If you don't know how to bodyboard, STAY AWAY!  I've been bodyboarding since I was 8, and  I even had my board creased in half, plus got a minor seperation in my shoulder.  Until that freak accident, it was a ton of fun and caught lots of barrels.  When you first get in, don't go straight to the middle of the pack.  Work your way in, show 'em you can catch a few, and you'll be fine.

Several years ago, I took a summer class at the University of Hawaii and rode the bus to campus every day from my relatives' home in Hawaii Kai.  After coming home from class, I always walked to "Sandy's".  No one ever enjoyed studying electromagnetism as much as I did--while I laid in the sand, soaked up the sun, and watched people bodyboarding in the waves.

P.S.  Sandy's is also a great place for kites!

I grew up surfing on this island, including the Sandy Beach Park area, or "Sandys" as the kama'aina call it.  This spot is renowned as having some of the best bodyboarding and bodysurfing in the world.

Full point, Half point, Pipe Littles, Generals, Middles, Gas Chambers, to name a few of the most popular "breaks".

Sandys also holds the record for most neck and back injuries of any beach in the nation.

Sure its wrong for a multitude of ignorant reasons for locals to hate tourists.  As a visitor, however, we politely ask you to do your part when visiting one of our beautiful beaches.

Do not litter.  We see tourists do this on our beaches and  well, it makes certain locals hate them.
Pay attention to the "Strong Current", "Dangerous Shorebreak" and "HIgh Surf" signs posted.  We can tell when you don't belong in the surf.  The lifeguards can too.  So, when they get on the megaphones and let you know you should stay away from the water, LISTEN.  Not respecting our lifeguards makes certain locals hate you.  Having your floundering body get in the way when we're trying to ride waves makes certain locals, well, hate you.
Mahalo,
A hui  hou,

Located just past Hanauma Bay, this little beach is a gem.  It's a great place to hang with the locals.  Just be sure to have your base tan going.  Great place to swim, when the surf is calm.  Unless you're an experienced body surfer (boogie boarder), be careful cause the shore breaks will really make you pound sand.

the waves crashing onto shore (along with the stories about the multitude of injuries) scared me so i didn't go in the water, but my two companions had a lot of fun being pounded by waves at sandy beach. maybe next time i'll go in....
