Out dated= check.
Slightly ghetto casino= check.
Close to the strip= check.
Cheap/ clean rooms= check.
Wristband that gets you free drinks throughout the hotel= check.
A decent launching point for a good time in Reno= hell yeah.

Let's be honest, this is Reno... Not Las Vegas. Outdated, stinky, sketchy are all words that seem synonymous with Reno anyways. Why avoid that? Embrace it. The Sands proved to be a decent hotel to crash at. For $60 a night, on a weekend, with wrist bands that get you free drinks (top shelf too) throughout the hotel, it's hard to beat.

Our rooms were clean, roach free and pretty friggin large. The hotel and casino layout does kind of suck and outside of gambling and consuming free alcohol, there wasn't much to do or see here. But, 2 blocks away you can find the "Strip". The blackjack dealers were all relatively fun and friendly and the cocktail waitress (all of whom seemed like they should be in a retirement home playing bingo) were fairly attentive with bringing the drinks.

And the complaints regarding the beds- take that wristband and head down to the bar for a few free nightcaps... you'll sleep fine on that rock hard mattress.

If you're not looking to impress anyone or find a romantic setting, this might be the perfect place for you in Reno.

$45 for a double queen room, 5 minutes from the strip, with a 1970's vegas room = awesome. The combination of card table green, tomato red, and royal blue, accented by brass fixtures and a fake marble vanity completed my RENO trip. Totally where it's at.

I'd stay here again =)

Very ghetto and outdated! Uncomfortable beds, mismatched furniture, itchy bedding, the walls are so thin, I could hear the neighbors, which was not a good thing hahahah. As a last minute plan, my family booked our stay here. It's not too too bad here, but coming here after 2 nights at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas the weekend before makes this place look like a dump. :)

Ghetto hotel, but we got a buy one get one free special so I can't be too harsh. You get what you pay for obviously. This review is primarily for their awesome prime rib and lobster special for $13.99, their shrimp cocktail for $1.99, and their breakfast special for $3.99. Good food, even better prices!

FIrst of all, this is RENO, not the most ritzy city.  I've stayed here a handful of times.  YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.  Overall, my stay has always been pleasant.  Everyone is friendly, pet friendly in the rooms (not sure if thats a good thing), rooms were clean &  walking distance to everything.    For $30/nite compared to $200 for a hotel a block away, what do you expect?
I think reviews should be balanced.  If you want value this is the place to go, if you want somewhat of a luxury I would stay elsewhere.

We showed up in Reno and didn't know where to stay. We stood on the corner and called all the different casinos that we could see from there. Sands was the cheapest for all of us to stay together. We got there. Didn't like how there was only one elevator from the parking garage. The inside was like a typical casino. The room was pretty nice. One bed had a super hard mattress and the other was pretty soft. It was weird. The bathroom was nice. Everything was pretty well set.

My friend went online and they had a 2-for-1 deal going on with the rooms. We got adjoining rooms.

The elevators are slow, stinky and broken.

WORST PARKING GARAGE ENTRANCE EVER. Maybe worst parking garage ever.

The rooms are really dark. They have about 4 lights and a small window, but you can see into other rooms across the way. I don't like that.

The bathroom door is in a weird spot for me...?

The rooms are actually decent. The showers are clean.

The toilets SUCK. I swear it takes 30 seconds to flush.

The doors shake and it's so annoying. For some reason my TV kept switching between color and black/white.

My friend's TV remote was broken, so they had to keep getting up to change anything.

The smoke alarm went off in the middle of the night for NO reason. It took them forever to come up and check it out. How annoying...for everyone.

The food options here are pretty horrible. The Cabana Cafe takes forever and nothing there seemed good at the time. The clam chowder screamed "food poisoning" to me. The pizza takes 15+ minutes to cook. Anything on the menu, even sandwiches, takes 10 minutes to make. It's not busy. It's not gourmet. It's slow. But it's convenient when you have time and you're hungry.

The buffet is a joke.

But for that price it was a good deal. There are worse places to stay in Reno.

The Good:
- It was the cheapest place we could find to put up 28 guys for a weekend.
- The staff were all very friendly and accommodating
- Within easy walking distance of everything in the downtown area
- AFAIK, nobody once gave us a hard time for being drunken and/or obnoxious.
- Our rooms were all relatively clean
- Huge windows with nice mountain views from our rooms on the 12th floor of the Dynasty tower.

The Bad:
- The door knobs or locks didn't work for 3/28ths of us at least once during the weekend.
- The rooms are all pretty smelly (even the clothes that didn't get worn needed to be washed).
- The windows don't open more than a tiny crack
- The beds and pillows are hard and flat
- Cable TV is small and the reception went in and out
- $9.99 for 1 day of slow wireless internet, $29.97 for 3 days (seriously??)
- The casino itself is dark, smokey, and has very few ladies, which OF COURSE doesn't matter to married-ol-me, but the other boys were severely unimpressed.

Being that we chose to stay here, which had good prices, rather than the other larger hotels, we understood that you get what you pay for. That being said, I didn't expect luxury. A bathroom without cockroaches would be expected however (unless the price per night is less than 10 dollars), and that expectation was not met.

On a funnier note, there was a blackjack dealer here neither said a single word nor moved her face at all while dealing. I thought she was mute until an ace came out, and she was forced to say "Insurance?".

The parent company's name 'Terribles' says it all.    It is terrible.

Even the outside looks old.

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights for $57.    Turned out that other hotels had similar deals, except with complimentary food and gambling coupons.

For a non-smoker, the place is the pits.  The ceiling is low, so smoke hung around the gambling floor.  Even the rooms stunk of smoke.  The air vents looked old and had streaks of built-up dirt/dust on them.  Didn't look like anyone cleaned them in ages.  The dusky place just didn't look too inviting.

The cocktail waitresses?  Well...let's just call them cocktail madams.    Even the patrons were of the older crowd.

O.  The room's walls are paper thin.  We heard our neighbor arguing and their baby crying all night.  The wife/girlfriend/lover/maid/etc pleaded with the live-in/husband/boyfriend/whatever to take them home.  He slammed the door and that was that.  Bring ear plugs.

One thing I have to give kudos for is the shower water pressure.  After a long hard day of skiing, the shower head's water pressure felt like a masseuse.

Well, $60 for 2 nights on http://hotels.com ...it was just a place to crash after skiing...however we rolled in around midnight on Friday and there were only 2 people doing the checking in and about a line of 30.people who just drove up..yes the casino floor is right there so it's smoky and LOUD ...there was a blue band playing.

Anyhow what I found hilarious was that they didn't take a credit card for "miscellaneous" expenses. We stayed at the Silver Legacy 2 weeks before and they have a $3 "resort" fee per night, plus my BF accidentally ordered the 24 hour porn channel (what an accident)...but the Sands, I guess they don't care if you steal towels or anything because they don't take your card when you check in if you've prepaid through a internet booking site.

Anyhow, the long and short of it is, cheap and clean, big white trash crowd whereas the Silver Legacy/Circus Circus/El Dorado is like 85% Asians who crowd the walkways, make the wait at the Buffet 3+ hours and walk around in the underwear on the floor to get ice...but whatever...it's just a place to sleep.

I dont know what all this depressing shit is.
Its Reno Baby!
Its not supposed to be all glitzy  and glamorous like Vegas.  Its supposed to be a bit sad.  Its Reno!

We shared rooms with 4 in each.  Cost me a whopping 18.50.
We took amazing photos in the room with their textured blue walls.
We slept comfortably in beds that on occasion fit 3.
It has a Mel's diner for those who get hungry at 4:00 am.
They didnt get mad at our party when we walked through the casino with a music box on our back blasting "You can call me al"
We all dressed old-timey, and fit in just perfectly.

Its just Reno...it was perfect.  Why stay in the classy places in Reno?  Its more fun this way.

1. Cheap room service. But beware: it comes from Mel's and is not that good.  But it's cheap. And you get like 9 mozzarrela sticks instead of 4. The apple pie is also not that bad. Do not get any other item, you will be sorry.

2. I came to Reno to canvass for Obama. http://Couchsurfing.com makes my eyes hurt, they said they weren't able to offer housing for volunteers, and let's face it: I hate people and love the Internet. So, the Sands it was .Why? Wi-fi in the rooms. 9.99 a day. Very worth it.

3. Casino is small, lots of penny slots for your enjoyment. Cocktail waitresses were good and quick and drinks were hella strong. Terrible ventilation, so if you are neurotic about smoke, the Sands Casino is not where you want to be.

All in all, it's cheap and it's tacky and the neighborhood is shady. This ain't the Venetian, that's for sure. Fuck, it's not even Exacalbur. But hey, it's got wi-fi. So, all is not lost in Reno.

Given that my preconceived notion of this place was one of abject terror, it really wasn't as bad as you might expect. The room was no-frills, but *appeared* cleanish. Natch, I stripped our bedspreads off first-thing to sequester any scabies or scat remnants, but really, when you're in tuh-rashy Reno, how often will you be in your room, anyway? We just used it to shower, disco-nap, and eventually pass out, so even though its paper-thin walls made for some rather noisy moments, it was cheap and never too crowded in the casino. Oh, and they have an on-site Arby's. bwahahahahahaha.

I was on Expedia and needed a room for one night. I found the Sands Regency available for under $30. I took it and was expecting to basically get what I was paying for.

I was quite surprised, the rooms were huge and clean. The only problem we found was the shower, there wasn't enough pressure coming through.

It far surpassed the price that we paid.

The SANDS! Every kid dreams of staying here one day, & this past weekend I finally got my shot.

The one thing that struck me when I walked in the door was how the lobby smelled like stale, cheap cigarette smoke, but I couldn't even catch a single whiff of broken dreams in the air. At that point, I knew we'd found the right place.

We pretty much ransacked our room, 3rd grade rockstar-style (cupcakes smooshed against the window, crackers in the bed, etc.), & were up until nearly 6am dressed up like old timers having a dance party which moved between hotel room, hallway, lobby, & parking lot. The staff at the Sands was great, & gave us no trouble for the relatively harmless bender we undertook.

This place is nothing but class.

This place is run by incompetents with bad attitudes. We had a reservation from Expedia, but it took 1 1/2 hours to get a room. First they told us we didn't have a room and it's Expedia's fault and there's nothing they can do. They were not impressed when we showed our confirmation. Come on, you're in the "hospitality" industry, at least put some effort into your job and be hospitable! The computer then coincidentally "went down" and the desk people walked off, telling us they'd check us in when they got back. Later, they realized it was their mistake, checked us in, and we had to try 5 rooms to get one that wasn't occupied! As in, we use the key they gave us, walk in, and there's people or luggage already there! Finally, we settled for a king size bed and two cots (another 40 min wait, but they were nice enough to comp us those) for two couples. Oh yeah, and a big jacuzzi right in the middle of the room, in front of the plate glass window facing the street. Nice! Too bad we're not exhibitionist swingers! The attitude of the front desk supervisor sucked, but this was not just one bad apple, for the experience was similar with all employees. Yes, this isn't the Ritz and it is cheap, that's why it's two stars. Also, my friend firmly asked to be comped something, and after much arguing they gave us four  wristbands for unlimited drinks. Were outta here after one night, but I hope our friends drink like Russian sailors on shore leave!

with all the bad reviews, i was thinking the worst. i mean how great can a hotel be if it costs $29 on a weekday night? however, this place was our only viable saturday option. we pull in and the exterior looks ok. the lobby was smokey but there were lots of people in line for registration. registration was quick and painless. the lifts were old and creaky and the room door wouldn't open the first time around but the room was pretty decent for $67 a night. big comfy renovated room. safe bet right? do not stay near the elevator unless you plan to not sleep in your room. never had i had a worse experience with a near elevator room. all i could hear the whole night was the grinding of the elevator and the loud voices of people talking while waiting for the elevator. add to that a rumbling AC (turn it off and it gets hot, turn it on and you can't sleep) and rattling windows. i could not sleep the whole night. a decent affordable place but run if you get an elevator room.

i'm giving this 4 stars not because I believe it's a 4 star resort - it's not.  But it gives you the "casino hotel" experience for an unbelivable value - and truthfully, the place isn't all that bad.

For instance, if you book through orbitz, you can get a non-smoking room with a king bed for $22.00 a night, during the week.  This, alone, might be reason to give the Sands four stars.  Once all the taxes are added on, it's $26.00.  For $26, where else can you stay in a clean room, with room service until 2 AM, with a full service casino downstairs, several restaurants, a sandwich shop that makes delicious roast beef and provolone sandwiches, and a Mel's, one of the best 24 hour coffee shops around.

In addition, there's a fitness center on the top floor with unbelievable views.  It's a shitty fitness center, don't get me wrong.  It's not like a spa you'd see at the Bellagio, however there are ellipticals, stair steppers, free weights, treadmills, a TV, a nice big hottub, a locker room...everything you need to keep in shape in a "no-frills" way.  It's free to use, too.  Heck, some hotels would charge $25 just to access the fitness center.  Keep in mind, the entire night here is only $22 on orbitz.

The front desk staff aren't super happy or friendly, however the staff in the poker room were extremely friendly and cordial.  They treat you as if you're their best friend.  There are all the casino games you'd want, at low limits.  On the downside, the casino is more smokey than most.

El Dorado and Silver Legacy would be a better experience, but would probably cost $50 or more per night.  At the Sands, you get a "ghetto" version of a casino resort, but to me, the "ghetto" aspect is really more like an "old school" casino and hotel...and in many ways that's more enjoyable than all the fake glitz and glamour of the more expensive places.  This is a casino where real people can stay, who don't have to be afraid they're not trendy enough.  If you can put on a pair of underwear and a t-shirt, you're trendy enough to stay here.

Fuzio's is a relatively new restaurant that opened here - it's a really great noodle-fusion type place...where you can get all sorts of noodle dishes, from italian to chinese.  Their motto is "Get more for your penne" or something corny, but it's really good food at reasonable prices.  Mel's is a decent place for a burger and fries.  The sandwich shop has great sandwiches.  There is a new york steak buffet that I heard was good, but didn't have time to try.  And there's Arby's if you have a craving for roast beef or a milkshake.

And if all else fails, the walk to the other casinos in downtown is no more than 3 minutes.  It's literally just a block away.

Its still an old-timers place thats continued to upgrade without really losing its less than attractive charm. Located in an undesirable area west of Virginia Streets main casino attractions, the casino and hotel still have all the amenities to keep your interest peaked. A pool thats off the parking lot in the back where the homeless tend to hang and watch you sunbath and swim and a Mels Diner to feed your hangover 50s style. But the most important amenity has got to be where you belly up for stiff drinks. Theres 2 or 3? different themed bars located throughout the casino and when you check in you get free drink coupons. Use them!

Casino floor is small, mostly slots and those stupid new video game slots that you cant figure what wins and why. Theres a few table games for Roulette, Craps and different card games, Blackjack being the king.

Walking distance to everything on casino row. Just watch your back because you might run into my brother Dave and then youre sure to be on a Cops in Reno episode.

I have not received my refund from the hotel or http://Orbitz.com.
This is the last time, I'm using http://Orbitz.com or make a reservation at Sands.  I'm very disappointed.
We were very disappointed with this place.  We got what we paid for.  The place is so cheesy, room are dim, no bathroom exhaust so you smell if you crap, the bed were hard and got my small toe bitten by bed bugs.
Our last night were was bad because I got locked inside our bedroom so my hubby had to get someone at the desk to open it.  They moved us out to a different floor no upgrade same crappy room.  Crappy bar which does not even serve mojito.  We had to go to Steakhouse in Circus Circus to get the best Mojito ever from Michael our bartender.

so im writing this review just to blast this racist samm s b****. before you go saying things like that, you should try to raise a family working minimum wage in a job that you have no chance of advancing in. i know what its like because my grandma worked 2 jobs just to bring up 8 daughters, and guess what... those daughters now make more than you probably ever will in a lifetime.

on another note, the sands is pretty good. i go there all the time when i go to reno. it is pretty run down, but it gets the job done. the rooms are huge, and for the most part clean. service is great, the price is right, i'll definitely keep coming here.

Nearly spur of the moment we decided to hit up Reno for Hot August Nights...even though I'm not much of a car person in my day to day life I have a deep abiding respect (ok, lust) for 67-68 Camaros.  Well, I should say, "had."   As my fickle heart is now deeply in lust for a 66 Riviera, a.k.a. the Sexiest Car Ever Made.

I digress.  Point is - we were heading to Reno on short notice and not a lotta cash.  So I found us a good deal at The Sand Regency.  I'd never heard of it and actually expected a total dump.  I don't know if we got lucky (well actually...nevermind) or if I just have a way of talking to check-in clerks but we got a really nice room.  Corner of the building far from the elevators and ice machines, quiet, and BIG with reasonably comfy king size bed and large clean bathroom...for cheap, it rocked!  I've stayed at pricier places in Vegas they didn't even give you real glass "glasses" or an ice bucket.  I always have to fill up the ice bucket even if I don't use it.  Just me.

Clean room, but garish colors and weird ass blue suede wallpaper.  I forgive such things in Nevada only.  Great view too.

Unfortunately they have some lame-ass policy over holiday weekends that forces you to arrive on Friday night so we aren't staying there this round.  Too bad Sands!

Oh, didn't play the casino...it didn't do it for us, strange lay-out and odd patrons. And, Mel's Diner suuuuucked both service and food.

I went to Reno to campaign for Obama, but had to spend my first night in town at the Sands.  I was there over Labor Day weekend, so it was crowded.  I'm not a huge casino-lover, so this review is going to be biased.  I had a terrible night sleep at the Sands, and the room wasn't as cheap as I'd heard they were, either.  The air unit in the room sounded like a jet engine, and disrupted my sleep many times.  That along with the numerous car alarms that kept going off in the parking lot below.  I live in Oakland, and I'm used to that, but it was too much at the Sands.  I was much happier to stay as a guest in someone's house for the rest of the weekend than stick it out in the sands.

Sands is definitely one of the smaller casino hotels around reno, but for the money paid, you get what you get. we stayed on a friday and saturday, one room for about $100 total. it was a special or something, but i'm sure it's a lot cheaper during off season and non weekend.

i agree with everything saying that the room is big. that doesn't mean there's a lot of amenities, though. no fridge, microwave, coffee maker, etc. television was pretty small, and had only 30 or so channels. (channel line up sucked though.. a lot of ESPN for one weekend) there was a weird smell, but it was bearable. definitely heard people in the hallways, so walls are thin i guess. bathroom was pretty big, too. i guess the only thing worth mentioning about their rooms is how spacious it is. we slept well on both nights.

casino area is pretty small, too. restaurants include mels, some cafes, all you can eat steak buffet for $12.99, and some asian fusion restaurant. steak buffet was pretty good, great choices and great price. loved the desserts. cocktail waitresses aren't too pushy with the drinks. there's really not a lot to say about the casino, it's pretty small and not a lot to do. maybe the fitness center they have at the top with a hot tub/jacuzzi/sauna/massage. again, it's pretty small and the smell of chlorine can be traced back to the exercise room. view is good tho.

overall, it's worth it to stay here. you can always walk or drive to other larger casinos. if you're looking for something cheap and don't have high expectations, this is it for you.

There is a Mel's Diner inside the casino. Matt ordered the Patty-Melt Burger with warm tea. The burger costs $6.95 and comes with tasty French Fries and half of a pickle. The entire city of Reno was very lively including this casino and diner. So the wait took somewhat long, but did it's best to be on Matt's table.

There are more restaurants at one of Reno's oldest including a Italian Restaurant, Subway and yes, a Arby's. Hear that Ed M?

Stayed here for NYE weekend to ring in 2008...bad move!

Casino:  Felt a little like imperial palace at Vegas.  Cramped, smokey, full of undesirables.  Maybe I'm just a snob?

Staff:  You could tell that they would rather be anywhere but there.  I know we all hate our jobs, but does it have to be so damn obvious?

Room Service:  We ordered from Mel's, which is part of the Sands.  The person who took our order was not curteous at all, but you can't really blame the hotel since they're kinda independent from Sands.  The food was ok but they asked us for the tray back...who does that?

Room:  Probably the saving grace of the trip.  The rooms were big but dimly lit (as confirmed by previous yelpers).  Bathrooms were clean but the shower could produce a little more water.

It wasn't horrible but I'd probably go with another hotel next time...if i ever go back to reno.

This is an okay place to stay if you're going to Reno but have a lot of activities planned. The hotel is right off of the freeway, has a lot of parking and is within walking distance of the bigger (and better) casinos and a quaint park/downtown area by the Truckee river.

But seriously, please plan on using your room for sleeping only. The rooms are very dimly lit and I swear to god they are hermetically sealed -- I actually got a terrible sinus/migrane headache while staying here. Absolutely no air flow whatsoever. My review would probably be poorer if I had actually paid for my stay and had a frame of reference for how much the room cost.

Great hotel if you are broke and you just need a room to crash in!
I think I got the AAA rate of $33/nt and I hosted a party in the rooms... I let the desk agent know so she just put me on the lowest floor so we could make noise but not disturb... what a nice way to have your needs met :).
The hotel is really low grade, but not the worst in cleanliness. It's what you would imagine Reno to be like. But for the price, who cares? :)

I had heard of the Sands---well, the Sands in Vegas, where Frank, Dean, and Sammy played during the Rat Pack's reign as the coolest of cool.

When I learned I had a reservation for the Sands in Reno---I was giddy with excitement! It was going to be a ring-a-ding-ding weekend.

My ring and my ding were kind of left hanging. the casino smelled--of smoke, sweat, and something I am not quite sure of.

The breakfast buffet---I can not even go into it. Food--not good, 'nuf said.

But the rooms, the rooms are fabulous! Huge rooms, with bright colors and silky curtains dividing the foyer from the main room. I felt like a princess with all of that space. I was so surprised by the room that I almost forgot that I had to drive around for 20 min looking for a parking space ---it was Pride weekend.

LOVE the rooms, hated everything else about the Sands.

All I know is my sister stayed here for $25/night, and she said the rooms are bigger than the ones on Virginia St.  I think its because the Sands is old school and was built before people figured out that they could make more money by cramming more people into a smaller space.  I would add the Sands to my list of places to price in addition to the other big hotels, and its close enough to the Legacy, Circus Circus, etc. if you want to visit them as well.

Wow! This place is stupid! The room is very dim, stinks! There was holes in the comforter, I didn't even wanna cover myself with that thing so I just used the sheets. The stupid bathtub got plugged while I was taking a shower. There was only like 25 channels available on tv, they did show Charlie & the chocolate factory so that was pretty cool! What else oh! The casino & buffet sucked too!

Cool hotel off the "strip." I had agreat time at this hotel.  Lots of people lots of booze and lots of mels.  Pool looked nice but it snowed on the first nite and the top floor has a spa and gym with nice suicide views.  Casino was not that cool at all and our shower was backing up.  Good thing it wasn't the toilet cuz i was flowin like a fro yo machine up there...................it must be the altitude?????

I've stayed at Sand's twice and liked it. Yes, they are not a 5 star hotel, but for the money you pay, their rooms are very big and beautiful. The bad part is that there is no where to eat there in the evening. I do like Mel's for breakfast, but hate the fact that they don't have a nice, elegant place to have dinner at...

Whoa, hey now. Stop snitchin' on the Sands, yelpers! I say capitalize on recession time pricing and book your stay now. Back in the day I always used to stay in the el cheapo, gambling subsidized hotel rooms in Reno and Vegas while absolutely raping and pillaging the all-you-can-eat buffets when road tripping to skiing and biking. But during the boom those free hotel rooms became pretty scare, so it was back to sleeping in the wagon. BUT! Happy days are here again, Catamounts. I booked a $25 room online when I was passing through recently, and it was great. They gave me a massive single room on the 14th floor, with a big couch where I could kick back and watch the Celtics Bulls triple OT game while simultaneously watching the sun set over the Sierras (well OK, it was a bit overcast), and then the next morning I got up early and had myself a nice jog on the Truckee River trail. The Sands rules! In fact I enjoyed my stay so much I went back online and booked another night. For $25 you can't afford NOT to stay at the Sands Regency. The only reason I can't give out 5 stars is cuz the streets around the hotel are kinda sketchy, but it's downtown Reno! It's supposed to be sketchy! Just bring mace and a hazmat suit if you have to go out after dark. Peace out!
