This place is super cute with wonderful vibrant Mexican decor, sweet people, and great music. It's more spacious that Sancho's in PA, but still a considerably small and casual restaurant.

This is my favorite place for fish tacos! I've been to both Sancho's in Redwood City, as well as their sister restaurant in Palo Alto, and I much prefer this one. I was here a couple of weeks ago and ordered the fish taco plate, comes with rice and beans, and I asked for an avocado on the side. The food came out quickly and much to my satisfaction. The grilled fish was so fresh and tasty, and the chipotle mayo was just the way I like, enough heat, but not burning hot. Whenever I eat Mexican food, I've always found the rice and beans to be rather bland/boring in comparison to the Caribbean rice and beans that I grew up eating. I was pleasantly surprised that not only were the fish tacos delicious, but the rice and beans were perfect as well, good flavor, texture/consistency.

Definitely will keep this restaurant in my list of go-to's.

Current favorite taqueria in the peninsula. while they don't have an expansive selection of aqua frescas, they do have quite a few very well prepared dishes.

Fish Tacos- we have had especially good fish tacos from Sancho's recently. The flavor of the fish seems fresher, with less fishiness. Perhaps they are being brined or otherwise marinated before they are battered and lightly fried. The seemed to have also toned down the amount of sauce used, to form a very delicious taco.

Burritos- we tend to get the surf and turf, with carnitas, and share amongst two people. The juice stored in the burrito is amazing. They add their delicious refried beans, which I typically tend not to like, and cheese, to create a very good flavor.

Quesadillas- crisped tortillas, tasty cheese, great filling (we chose carnitas). What more can you ask for?

Chimichanga- the whole party loved the contrast of the fried tortilla skin and the tomato like sauce porued over the chimichanga. If you like chimis, it is cooked well here.

Service is always friendly, and they always have a sports game on, if possible. If you live in Redwood City / Emerald Hills, give this place a shot!

There are times when Yelp is wonderful, then there are those other times...

So, all I kept hearing was, "the best fish tacos ever!".  Uh, huh.

It was probably the most disgusting thing I ever ate.  The fish was extremely salty.  My wife had the grilled version - grilled?  Where?  It tasted like it was sauteed in lots of salt and butter - hers was saltier than mine.  Then that sauce.  Some sort of mayonnaise / remoulade sauce.  Tasted worse than that crap some sushi places throw on their rolls.  Then the tortilla.  Flour?!?!  It tasted exactly like the low fat ones you buy at Safeway.

The good?  Very nice beer selection on tap.  Even Devil's Canyon.

Otherwise.  Fish tacos - Do not recommend, at all.  Ever.  Would I come back and try the other stuff?  Maybe, but there are just too many other taquerias to choose from that I know will be good.

This used to be one of my favorite taquerias but sadly no more.  The food has slipped from excellent to average (pastor used to be packed with pineapple and flavorful now it's bleh), and every time I give it another chance the place is dirty and the staff unfriendly if not rude.  In fact, the last time we were there the cashier rang up an extra $10 on the register.  Thankfully, we got to thinking that $26 for a taco salad, burrito and fountain beverage was outrageous and actually did the math.  The guy sheepishly gave us the extra $10 back when we called him on it, but you gotta wonder how many other people don't catch being over charged?  Probably won't be back again.

Sancho's is supposed to have the best fish tacos on the Peninsula but I don't agree at all. They were good, but not great. The place only accepts cash which is a huge inconvenience as well. And chips and salsa are extra...no freebies.

While I liked the food, I was overall disappointed due to the above little inconsistancies with other similar restaurants I'm used to.

3.5  not my style of tacos
the decor here is great
as far as the food goes, the regular taco is the most normal at least, had al pastor with a lot of onion, spicy
next, a carne asada crispy taco (hard shell), again like a fancy tastier taco bell with all the cheese, etc
the fish taco has chunks of battered fish with thick drizzled sauce that didn't impress me.  much rather have Nick's Crispy Fish Taco in SF for this style of food
recommend using your GPS to find this place.

The overall rating is 3.5.  Since I was still hungry after consuming two fish tacos at Al's Fish and Chips, I looked up on Yelp to see if there was another fish taco place nearby. Sancho's Taqueria popped up highly rated, so that's how we ended up making a trip to Sancho's.

The fish taco here is HUGE! Served on a warm flour tortilla was a huge mount of piping hot, lightly battered fried fish cubes topped with creamy zesty sauce. The only thing I did not like was the salsa offering. Even the hot salsa was not hot enough and they were all too watery for my liking.

Nicer ambiance than Al's but the service at Al's nicer/warmer. Will return to try other items on the menu.

Well it was my first time checkin this place out on a friday night. Pretty packed even an hour after usual dinner hours. Luckily, we came in at the right time and found ourselves a good table to fit in.

What did I order? What else? Of course I took fellow yelpers' advice on the specialty Fish Tacos.

Truth is, I can't remember the last time I had fish tacos. I'm a big burrito fan. So instead of comparing, I'll just break down the experience for you.

First of all, size-wise, it's pretty loaded for a $3.75 taco. Ingredients were all really fresh from the fish, the lettuce and the tomato/onion/parsley mix that they throw in. Then they top it off with a really light Chipotle type of sauce. Great combination of flavor overall that doesn't leave a nasty after taste/breath, which was good coz we still had a long night ahead!

The chips however were "eh, whatever." Probably a tier above Tostitos chips that you could buy off Safeway. Personally, the chips itself is a big thing for me when I go out to Mexican restaurants simply because I love the taste of that authentic "homemade" tortilla chips. But I can understand that other people may not be as enthusiastic as I am about the chips and often disregard it, so I let it slide in my 5-star rating. :)

Overall, great experience, definitely coming back for more later on, maybe try something other than a Fish Taco? lol maybe?? ...NAH!

Wow, just thinking about Sanchos is making my mouth water. The fish burritos are SO good and huge. My mom and I can easily split one and it's more than enough - 8 or 9 bucks but totally yummy. Good guacamole too!

Amazing burritos, huge portions, always packed (good sign), really nice people, too bad its cash only, but  thats ok - totally worth it.

Took me a while to learn about this place .....
but it is a hidden gem ---you would think that all the best taquerias are on middlefield.
Awesome fish tacos, try the cobb salad with shrimp or chx.
great shrimp burritos too.
This place gets crowded, especially after work hours...so order ahead of time if you are taking it to go.

Talk about hidden gems.  As I wound my way through the suburban backroads of Redwood City, I kept having to check my GPS to make sure I was still on the right track - no way would there be Bargain Bite in this neck of the woods.  Fortunately I was mistaken.

Food:  5 stars.  I had to go with the carnitas super burrito on my first visit.  The burrito is packed with lots of juicy, flavorful pork balanced nicely with salsa, guacamole and sour cream.  I ate the whole thing even though I got full two-thirds of the way through.

Service:  3 stars.  Food preparation is a little slow for a taqueria, perhaps because the place was short-staffed the day I went (there's no way to tell because the food is prepared out of sight).

Atmosphere:  4 stars.  The decor is bright and vivid and there are plenty of interesting Mexican "day of the dead" figurines to look at.  The local crowd is a mix of families, old and young, and guys in togas (don't ask).

Hits:   Super carnitas burrito.

Misses:  Out of the way location.

If You Like This Place, You'd Probably Like:  La Taqueria, Taqueria Vallarta.

There is a first time for everything.

To all the mouths who have not taken a taste of Sancho's famous fish tacos... I feel your pain. I was once there my friends but there comes a time when we must emerge from our shells and go for the GOLD.

Sancho's fish tacos are the GOLD, they don't get better than this. Do I really need to write a long review about how one bite and you'll be hooked? one taco and you'll be feeing for another? so bad that radical cravings will come at odd hours and you will find yourself trying to reinvent them at home with no possible luck of reaching Sancho's high Holiness of crispy, crumchy, creamy cabbage topped tacos!!!

Euphoric. Orgasmic. Repeat... Euphoric.Orgasmic.

Fish taco lovers - you'd be a fool not to try these babies. Cooch Coma.

Go here for the fish tacos.Other recommendations: SUPER CARNITAS BURRITO. They aren't HUGE like in San Francisco but they are filling enough to have this stuffer wonder how many he could actually stuff. Trust me, anything that causes me to question that means it's bustin a move into my groove. Sadly, I don't think I could stuff as many as I'd like to - beans, rice, etc, take up a lot of stomach space even with extended expansion. Bad for compulsive or competitive speed eaters.

5 stars because Sancho's devirginized me and I will never ever ever ever forget my first time... or taste.

Small salsa bar, not impressive, watery salsa and tiny containers to fill ... I actually grab a drinking cup to pour my salsa in and get looked at funny but who cares. I'm going all out while I'm at it. Can we say salsa splurge!? I always order to go so I can do the sacred scarf at home, alone and in peace. They chips they provide with my meals are nothing to write home about. They are obviously of the bagged variety. The food itselt makes up for the medicore chips and dips.

If you think you've come across a better fish taco I'd like to know. In the meantime, I'm sticking and finger licking to Sancho's kicking *fish tacos*

Ps. Someone please scan their menu online. I once grabbed a few to read like porn on lonely nights when cravings called. I have now moved and do not have my menus or a workable scanner. People like to see PRICES and well as pictures. I request that someone scan their menu and start putting up more juicy eye candy to drool over. Keep sharing the joy with the world. Thanks my fellow yelpers!

Parking: In front or around the common small Emerald Hills plaza. Use your GPS or mapquest to find this place if you aren't familiar with the area.

$$ for price range and generally packed and noisy whenever I've gone in to pick up my take out orders.

Growing up down in Southern California I have eaten at many different Mexican resturants. I tried taco trucks, 5 star places and everything in-between. Over the years I've also been deep into Baja and Southern Mexico and am always on the look out for a good fish taco.

The fish tacos at Sancho's are simply the best I've had.

They have the right amount of food in this soft, warm tortilla. The fish is perfectly and lightly fried and is tender and flaky. The sauce is a perfect blend of spice and flavor... LOL!! Jeeez...as I write this I want another one!!!

Bottom line, just go, you will not be disappointed.

Cheers!

Once again, Sancho's Taqueria has made a mistake on my order. Of course it's my fault for giving them yet another try after 3 screwed up orders in a row. You would think that it would be simple to make 2 burritos, one chicken with guacamole and no cheese and the other beef with cheese but no guacamole, but these guys seem incapable of getting a simple order like that right.

We haven't gone there in over a year, despite it's close location, due to them not being able to get our take out order right. In the past they've offered to make a new order only to screw even that up so this time the dog got an expensive meal and I am sworn never to spend my money at this place again. 4 mistakes in 4 orders is enough chances in my opinion.

If you don't care if they get it right, enjoy the place but if you want to eat what you order drive somewhere else and get what you wanted.

My coworkers and I have on multiple occasions driven 30 minutes each way to have burritos at Sancho's.  It is worth the drive!

Sancho's burritos mix the ingredients well, instead of having dollops of sour cream and guacamole in one section and none in other parts of the burrito.  The whole of the burrito is greater than the sum of its parts.

I heard about this place from an article in the chronicle about the best local taqueria's. It lived up to it's billing. Great burritos and carne asada taco's. Huge portions...free chips and salsa and the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is cause I need to leave room for if I can find a place better....but I doubt it...Oh yeah, fresh ingredients and the food was not runny.

Haven't been here in over a year (what was I thinking?!?) but Sancho's still makes the best kick ass grilled fish tacos anywhere. The tacos are decent sized and they are filled with mouth-watering, moist and fresh chunks of fish (red snapper in my case) and then lathered with their delicious fish taco creamy sauce. $3.95 each. You can have your fish fried too but grilled seems tastier.

I had 2 yesterday and have been thinking about them for the last 24 hours. That good.

Bottom line: If you like fish and like fish tacos, this is a must visit despite being off in the boonie hills of redwood city.  And yes, their other stuff is pretty decent too.

Considered one of the best taquerias in the entire Bay Area (which, if you are not from the area, is saying an awful lot) by the San Francisco Chronicle, Sancho's is the result of marrying fresh, high quality ingredients with kitchen skills honed at the Culinary Institute of America.  No joke, Adam Torres (owner/chef) is a CIA alum and cooked at Boulevard.  Everything here is made from scratch, a difference you can really taste.  I've never had the fish tacos, but everyone I know that has proclaims them the best ever.  I usually stick to burritos, which are perfectly constructed.  Unlike most places, when you take a bite, you get a good blend of ingredients, instead of, say, a big glob of guacamole.  The carnitas are top shelf, as is the carne asada.  I tried the chorizo super burrito once, but it was just a little too rich.

They have, within the past year or so, expanded into the adjacent space, offering inside seating and a small bar area with draft beer.  This is great news, since the place started out as a small storefront with very limited seating outside.  Clearly business has been good to be able to nearly quadruple in size.

Be warned, Sancho's is well off the beaten patch, situated way up in the Emerald Hills neighborhood of Redwood City.  But, your efforts will be rewarded.

Mmmmm... fish tacos (picture drool falling from my lips all over my shirt)  They have to be the best fish tacos ever... fried to perfection, the sauce... it's all done so well.

Sancho's used to be my hands down favorite for a burrito or some tacos, but I eventually started leaning toward el grullense on el camino for any burrito that involved fish or steak... they beat out sancho's by the tiniest margin (and they're much closer to me and super quick)

If I was to only rate the fish tacos... definitely a 5 star, but overall, they get a 4 taking in to account everything I've had there.

Still a bit hard to find, even though they're like 100 times the size they used to be way back when.. but at least you can usually find a place to sit.  Bring cash!

Tried it when they first opened, didn't like it. Went back a week ago because I felt like fish tacos. Don't understand what everybody is raving about. They were ok but that's it. Had the shrimp ceviche too and it was good. Last night I had it again and it was very fishy and way too hooott. Steak burrito and steak quesadilla had barely any steak. The worst was the chicken tortilla soup: looked like mashed potatoes colored red with tomatoes and tasted HORRIBLE!!!! My son got it right when he said that it was the worst Mexican food he ever had! I didn't want to drive to Ceviche Taqueria in San Mateo last night but they have by far better Mexican food!! And that goes for fish tacos, burritos and everything else. Sanchos Taqueria sucks!!!

Sadly, perhaps the first and hopefully only disappointing experience!  We are/were huge Sancho's fans (since 9/06!) and today, both my husband and I were hugely disappointed with our food.

He ordered the two taco plate and the taste was just meh.  Seriously nothing to write home about.

I ordered the fish taco - my favorite fish taco anywhere hands down - and the freshness wasn't there.  The food wasn't hot.  In fact, the fish tasted room temperature and the normally crispy outside wasn't crunchy.  Room temperature fish tacos basically just taste mealy!  Also, there was way too much sauce on the tacos - an oozy gooey mess!

After I finished the fish taco, I realized I should have tried to return my terrible taco and get a fresh one but I was so starving!  By the time I realized what was going on, I had already finished most of the taco.  Erg.

There was no love in the food tonight.  I hope it was just a fluke experience but it sure will be awhile before we venture back.

As we got closer and closer to Sancho's, into the hills of western Redwood City, and progressively further from my other favorite RWC taquerias in Little Michoacan, i got more and more suspicious of this place.

I had just gotten home from a 4 hour training ride out on the bike, so i was really really really hungry and opted for the fish burrito. My girlfriend had an al pastor taco and a carnitas taco.

My burrito was awesome. Just like any burrito, with so many things going on, it's tough for each ingredient to really stand out, and i also wasn't really paying attention, just wolfing the thing down. The fish was battered and was light and crispy. I'd be willing to bet Sancho's has really tasty fish tacos.

My girlfriend's tacos though, were easily the best i've had since moving out to California 2 years ago from Texas. Both meats were done to perfection. It was clear someone was paying attention and putting a ton of care into this stuff.

The carnitas had that soft and tender texture with just a little bit of crisp from when the braising liquid evaporates and they sear. The flavor was perfect: a hint of salt, and porky deliciousness.

The al pastor tacos where nice and wet, but not too much. The meat was juicy and tender, and the sauce had a really good hint of pineapple.

These are far and away the best tacos i've had yet in Redwood City. If only it wasn't way out in the boonies.

Great fish tacos: light, delicious, fried fish; tasty sauce; fresh, crisp filler.

I was less impressed by the salsa bar. It had a wide variety of sauces, but they were thin and uninspired. The rice and beans were only so-so, and the chips were just this side of stale. But the fish tacos? Amazing.

Based on my experience and the other reviews here, I would focus on the entrées and skip the sides.

I've been going to Sancho's since they first opened, and have had 1,438 meals there since (OK, I made that up, but it's been a lot).

The three best things about Sancho's, in my opinion, are (1) The Fish Tacos; (2) The Fish Tacos; and (3) The Fish Tacos.

I also love the salads (entire meals in a bowl), and you can't go wrong with any of the several Burrito choices (the carnitas is my favorite). But did I mention the Fish Tacos?

Sorry, I gotta go. Writing this is making me hungry.

I tried this place on 2 different occasions so my rating is based on the average of each time. The first time I got a chicken burrito. It was so plain, it was almost gross. The only things inside were chicken and rice. No veggies and it was small. I've had chicken burritos 10x better from chipotle! In that occasion, I rate the food a 2/5.

More recently I tried the hype and got 1 fish taco and 1 carne asada taco. The fish taco was really good. It was so unhealthy, but was bliss. The fish was in little deep fried nuggets with some kind of creamy spicy sauce with some cabbage. The carne asada taco was okay and average. Nothing special about it. The meat was kind of leathery and chewy. The size was ridiculously small (about the size of my palm). Even though the carne asada was average, the fish taco was so good that it more than made up for it. The fish taco and carne asada experience was a 4/5.

Averaging the 2, you get 3/5 which is what you see in my rating. My take on it is, stick to the fish tacos!

When I give a one-star review it means that something in my meal was truly disgusting. That was the case at Sancho's Taqueria. I would give Sancho's zero stars if I could.

I tried a fried fish taco, a chicken taco, and a chicken burrito with pinto beans.

When I ordered the fish taco, I asked if there was mayonnaise in the chipotle sauce. (I absolutely loathe anything with mayonnaise, so my plan was to order the taco without sauce if it was mayonnaise-based.) The guy behind the counter said that he didn't know, went back into the kitchen to ask, and then came back and said that there was no mayonnaise in the chipotle sauce.

I was still suspicious, so I asked for the sauce on the side. When it came out, sure enough, it was obviously mayonnaise-based. I later saw a newspaper review on the wall of the restaurant that mentioned the fish tacos with "mayonnaise-chipotle sauce," which confirmed my suspicion.

The sauce did come on the side, so no harm done, I just didn't eat it. Still, I had made a point to ask about the sauce and the guy had even gone back into the kitchen to check. So what I am supposed to assume: that they don't know the ingredients of their own food, or that they lied? In either case, not cool.

The first few bites of my chicken burrito were totally fine. However, as I ate the burrito I saw something gross buried further down in the burrito between some beans. I grabbed a fork and pulled it out.

What I found was a chunk of rubbery pure chicken fat and skin that was about half the size of my fist. It was incredibly disgusting -- even my boyfriend, who has an extremely high tolerance for gross bits of meat, thought it was repulsive. Even thinking of it as I write this review makes me feel a little queasy. Needless to say, I didn't eat any more of my burrito.

To be fair, the fish taco and the chicken taco were both tasty and the first few bites of my burrito were also fine.

But the disgusting piece of fat in my burrito was absolutely enough to ensure that I will never, never come back to Sancho's, and the shady business with the sauce ingredients only reinforces that decision.

Whole choir singing:

Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.

Finally!  My search has ended. I've spent the last 4 months looking for a great takeout burrito place and I found it thanks to yelp :) I love burritos, especially carnitas burritos, and since moving here, I haven't had much luck. Don't get me wrong, I've had really good Mexican food here, but I had not found that perfect take out burrito. Until Sanchos :)

Sanchos isn't anything fancy. You order at the counter, pay by cash or check only (the 4 people who checked off "accepts credit cards" lied), and wait with a nice plastic number on your table for your food. Since I am not fancy, and I don't need to be waited on (especially for a perfect burrito), it was exactly what I was looking for. My burrito was perfect. I can only vouch for the carnitas, but I must say, it was SOOOO good. The tortilla was that perfect steamed goodnessy texture, the cheese was melted, the beans refried (you can also get black or pinto), and there was just the right amount of carnitas. You could get guacamole or sour cream inside too, but I was feeling boring. I opted out on the salsa too so I could add my own mixture from the salsa bar, which added just the right amount of extra flavor and heat.

Eating my burrito-o-yumminess, it reminded me of all the great burrito places I have frequented in the past. Sancho's ranks right up there with Anna's Taqueria (Boston) and El Cuervo (San Diego). I can feel my waistline expanding already...

This is a great place to get takeout but also has quite a few tables to eat in. They have beer on tap too! I was told I had to get the fish tacos next time, but I am so obsessed with their burritos that I may not be able to order anything else.  I don't want to be bossy, but go here.  Okay?

P.S. Happy 100th review to me. Happy 100th review to me. Happy one hundredth review to Heather. Happy 100th review to ME :)

I never have the willpower to choose between the fish taco and the shrimp taco and usually end up getting both. When combined with the amazing pickled carrots, fresh chips and salsa, and a beer, this leaves me with the feeling that I should have hiked here instead of driving.

Oh well. It's good, folks. Please don't take my table.

The hang over lingers.

So off to Sancho's we go for the fish tacos.

A nice cold bottle of Corona and 2 fantastic fish tacos. You can't go wrong. Solid once again.

Brett went against the grain and ordered the burrito. He said he wished he had the fish tacos instead. Ha!

If it's not broke, why fix it? Or something like that.

I think I have gained 2 pounds since Wednesday, eating nonstop hangover food.

Hopefully this headache will go away or else I will resort to eating a philly steak sandwich. Yuuuuuumy!

Damn you, cucumber mojitos! I curse thee!

I used to like the veggie burritos the most.  Then the recipe changed and I didn't care for it as much.

But, I recently tried the fish tacos and they are SUPERB!!!

Service can be hit or miss at times.

They have since expanded in the last year and now have more seating capability.  Usually crowded.  Popular, especially for families.

Hidden in the Emerald Hills subsection of Redwood City so you may have to do a bit of searching to find it the first time.
