Review from Scott T.
In all my years of haunting Thai Town like a ghost, I've never wandered into Sanamluang until last week. I don't know what to attribute it to except possibly that it's really bright in there and I typically hate bright restaurants. But I was meeting a small group of friends/co-workers in Thai Town and figured it was the perfect chance to finally try it out. My co-workers originally wanted Palms, but we read that Thai Elvis is sick (get better soon, Thai Elvis...).
Sanamluang is bright, packed even on weekday nights and fast-paced. But don't let that frighten you. The menu is extensive and full of goodies. And the servers, despite often being too busy to chit-chat when you're asking them for a fifth chair for the late girl, are considerate in their own way. Our server, apparently sensing I was not Thai from my asking "do you have Thai boat noodles" (she was right: I am not Thai), asked to make sure if I wanted "all of it," warning me that there was tripe, etc. "Give me the whole cow," I replied.
My Thai friend insists they have the second best Thai boat noodles in Thai Town. Until I gather sufficient evidence to the contrary, I now agree. I won't say what the best is, but it rhymes with... Sapp. Nevertheless, the boat noodles are great here, an intense spicy mixture of beef, beef balls, liver, tripe, tendon and blood. I don't remember if it lists all those on the menu, but... now you know what you're slurping.
My friend had a pink seafood soup. It was sour and seafood-tasting (again... not Thai). I think if you have nasal congestion, this is the one you want.
The above two dishes are pictured in my photo. My other friends just got Pad Thai and Pad See Ew (none of us are Thai). -
Review from duke c.
Came to Sanamluang thanks for the Six Taste tour and holy bejesus... this place is good.
I've never really had any other Thai soup noodle dishes except for the Tom Yum Noodles a lot of Thai restaurant serves. Got to try the Duck Stew Noodle Soup, which is with flat rice noodle soup with duck, lettuce, and bean sprouts. The crazy thing is that the soup is also cooked with cinnamon, and that's just uncharted territory for me. First sip of the soup, I'm sure I gave a super confused look, and then it hits you... cinnamon! The duck is tender and there's a healthy portion of it!
Also had Pad Kee Mow, which is spicy flat noodles with green chili, mint leaves and onions. We went with ground chicken and it's a solid solid pad kee mow. Got a kick but not over that makes you want to only drink water for the rest of the day. A little greasy though but that's to be expected.
My favorite is the Fried Morning Glory with soy bean sauce! Morning glory, aka ong choy, aka water spinach, is my favorite vegetable. Been eating it for as long as I can remember and I've had it in a variety of ways: Taiwanese, boiled, stir-fry, with shrimp paste, and now with soy bean sauce. I rarely find ong choy that's as crisp and fresh as the ones they served at Sanamluang. Generally the ones I buy at market or in Taiwanese restaurants, they are a little bit old so the stems are not as crisp. The soy bean sauce is perfect with the ong choy as well. Again, very greasy since it is a stir-fried dish but it's goood.
From the outside, it doesn't look like there'd be great food. Even the inside doesn't inspire much confidence, but trust, this hole-in-the-wall has got some solid and delicious Thai food! -
Review from Lauren T.
I normally don't like to eat Thai, however, after hanging out with some friends at a bar I was craving it. Sanams was the first place that came to mind.
I got there having the valley location in mind. I was expecting a popular late night place with bright neon lights, this location was quite the opposite. The location was small, service was okay, food was alright, but it got the job done.
Cash only. -
Review from Robert C.
After a show in Pantages Theater, we were thinking of food to chow down. My brother recommended this Thai place in which is one of his favorite restaurants in Hollywood.
I don't know why everyone is so hyped about this place. People say it's the best phad thai in town, not really to my taste.
We ordered pad see ew, beef soup and some other entrees. It was typical thai food, not something to be excited about.
Parking sucks big time. I see valet people squeezing the cars inside the lot. Probably it's convenient after going clubbing because of the store hours closes at 330am.
It's cheap and decent thai food.Listed in: Good Grub, "Oink Oink"

First of all I love Thai food ....and this hole in the wall with picture menus and tables filled with Thai looking people, and a waitress who said "You don't want to order two noodle dishes, you want a rice dish to go with your noodle dish"..is just what the Doctor ordered.
The soup was excellent, food was very good...the ambiance = cafeteria style, open late...late night. Fast service, no waiting...sign me up.
We'll be back for sure. -

Hands down best thai food in los angeles. Whoa!
My friend sandy first introduced me to this place, telling me it reminded her of thailand. She and the waitress talked to each other in thai and laughed ... at me? Anyway, great restaurant. The food here has so many layers of flavor. Its as though the pans they use to cook the food have never been washed and there are years worth of spices and flavors imparted into the food, in a very good way.
I always get kra pow tofu. Their tofu must be made somewhere close by and its delicious. Also they have longon juice!
They are cash only, there is an atm across the street. -

Bomb thai food. I've been on a Thai food kick this winter, it's like I can't get enough. And although Thai town Hollywood is a small journey through traffic from this end of West LA, if you love spicy and authentic homestyle food or if you have a budget this one's for you.
After becoming mildly addicted to the noodle soups at Pa Ord (legendary spot), I wanted to try all the other places out here. On this particular night we weren't even trying to eat at Sanamluang, we were looking for Ruen Pair (recommended to me by Kevin B. I think we were maybe a block away, but we saw Sanamluang and at 2AM, brashly changed plans and went in.
The space felt like your typical late night spot, cash only, bright fluoro lights and a really eclectic group of patrons. There's surprisingly a lot of seating, so it's a good place for groups.
i ordered pad see ew, my boyf ordered chicken fried over rice?and we shared a tom yum seafood soup. Pictures to come. The entire meal tasted like a Thai friend's grandmother had homecooked it for us fresh from the kitchen. Portion size is just right, we didnt have any leftovers and combined i feel like our bill was less than $20. Steal.
One thing to note, don't miss out on the Thai tea here! It is so fresh, puts all the canned thai tea mix that i've been drinking to shame.
Will let yall know if i ever make it to Ruen Pair after all...because i will definitely be back to Sanamluang. -

I've been going here since I was a kid. My family is Thai so I know Thai food. This is probably my favorite Thai place in Southern California. The dishes are authentic and prices are great. If you're in LA and love Thai food, this is a must stop.
I recommend the crispy pork with Chinese Broccoli and the pad see ew. Unfortunately there is no beer or alcohol here. Bring a flask.
Don't forget to bring some cash - no credit cards accepted here -

Best Thai food on the planet...ok...maybe I've never been to Thailand. I have tried many Thai spots though throughout highly Thai areas in Cali. I first tried this place when I was at a job that had me wine and dine Doctors...
You know a place is good when it is recommended by a person from the same culture. One of my Thai Doctors recommended this place in Pomona. The Hollywood location is the same and does not dissapoint. Feel free to get brave and order anything on the menu. You will be pleasantly surprised. Trust me, you will not get insects.
Pad Se Ew recommended. Tom Ka Kai recomended. Also the obvious Pad Thai.
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PLACE. and it will LOVE YOU LONG TIME too -

This place is bomb! I have tried a lot of other thai places in the area and I always go back to this one. Great food and good prices. Love the cashew nut chicken and best satay around!

If you have a craving for Thai street-style food, this is the place to go! And yes, I've been to Thailand.
Noodles and fried rice are great. Honestly, I haven't ever gotten too much else here, but it's been good enough to keep me coming back. For a delicious, unique dish, I'd highly recommend the Yen Ta Fo, a shockingly pink noodle soup with crunchy jellyfish, fried tofu, etc.
Parking's scarce in a small lot out front, but there's usually a valet (cheap) to cram in the cars. -

Hole-in-the-wall ambience with delicious homestyle Thai cookin.' Yummy! Cash only just adds to the street vibe. Take the so-so reviews from people who only order Pad Thai with a grain of salt. This place has crazy authentic dishes for herbivores (the radish biscuits are my personal fave -- sticky delicious goodness!) and carnivores alike (some seriously daunting pork dishes -- if you dare!) NOTE: I can only vouch for the Hollywood location.

Ahhh... i feel bad writing this review... we recently went there for a late dinner. I've been to the Sanamluang in Pomona and I love that place. My family and I always go there to eat. So I figure coming to this one would be the same great experience... but it wasn't... sad to say. We get there and I walk up to a waitress to ask where to put my name in, but before any words could come out of my mouth, she walks right pass me and mumbles for me to put my name on the waitlist, but doesn't tell me where the list is located... Anyways... a customer tells me that the list is posted on the door. I write my name down and we wait. We sit down to orders and I got the Sanamluang noodles and my friends get the pad thai. We get our orders and I had to wait about 10 minutes to flag someone down to ask for chili. The guy i asked seemed really confused when i asked for chili... so he brought me Siracha, but all I wanted was the little containers of chili that they normally put on the table. My friends were not impressed with the Pad Thai, it was really really tangy, I couldn't even eat it. I'm hoping that we all just ordered the wrong food that this place. Although, my noodles were fairly good, but its hard to mess up noodles like that. -

This is the place that started my love affair with Thai food!
Before I discovered this place I always thought Thai and Chinese tasted pretty much the same. Those days are long gone....
We ordered Indian curry noodle soup, the roasted duck, sauteed eggplant & beef pud see-ewe and everything was amazing.
the only negative about this place is the lack of parking space or maybe i should say no parking space... tiny shopping plaza so be prepare to park on the street. -

Prices here are slightly cheaper than YAI & the food is just as good. luv their tom yum soup, tiger beef, silver noodle soup & of course combo fried rice & chinese brocolli with fried pork, YUM. Parking is a problem but at least they have some sort of valet parking lol.

I love this place. Been coming here since i could remember. And that's just it: it's been Open and standing for that long. I can never get enough of the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. That broth is so rich in flavor. The pad-see-ew : seafood (to die for). It has a kick of burnt-ness.. I don't know if i could get enough of it.. Highly recommend by me. Stop by and enjoy.

Total hole in the wall. CASH ONLY (There is a fee-loving ATM right outside the restaurant if you need, as i did).
So I dont get the hype about the chicken over rice.. The rice is flavorful but the chicken is just peices of chicken lightly fried and tastes and smells really boiled chicken-ey. Where's the fried chicken crisp? Where's the cooked-in flavor? The ginger sauce definitely helped but I wasn't totally won over still.. Kinda wish I got the shrimp cakes instead.
The PAD SEE EW was DELICIOUS! It didn't taste like old oil or overly greasy like some other places. I got it with CHICKEN and recommend it highly.
The thai iced tea with boba was just alright. It wasn't too flavorful and was watery right when I got it. Nice touch with the crushed ice though!
Wish I knew about this place when I lived in the area! -

This is a new Thai place for me. It was ok. Made the mistake of ordering the General's Noodles here. Stick to the authentic Thai fair. Portion sizes were pretty impressive here. They have lot limited lot parking, but they do have metered parking near by so no worries. Will need to make a return visit to really make a more substantial entry. Enjoy!

For nocturnal creatures including late workers and the insomniacs :-) and if you love Thai food / bbq this the place to be. It's Affordable and food is great. Parking might be tight at times, and one thing I kinda not like is they only accept CASH only.

Don't go here to have pad thai or fried rice....its the same as every where else..
HOWEVER , their other dishes are soooo authentic , really tastes like Bangkok street food. Been to thailand a few years ago and this is probably one of the few places where the food tastes so authentic.
The fish cake (tod man pla) is to die for. The cucumber sauce on the side is yummy itself. The curries taste very authentic too.
The fried fishes especially the pompanos with the chilli sauce is very spicy but so worth it. My favourite is the pad pring king Yummmy -

This is another excellent Thai Restaurant in the Thai Town area on Hollywood Blvd.
FOOD: They make a lot of good items here, including Thai Boat Noodles, as well as Hainam (steamed) Chicken Rice Dish with their house spicy sauce. A couple more of their delicious items include the Lat-na (Rad-na) flat noodle dish, and also the Crispy Pork with Chinese Broccoli.
SERVICE: Pretty decent, but once you got the orders in, the food comes very quick. They have limited seating inside, but there are additional tables available outside of the restaurant.
PARKING: The parking situation not that good. It's inside a very small plaza and there are cars double-parked all the time during evening hours. Best option is to find parking on side streets and walk there, instead.
OVERALL: I highly recommend this place for authentic and good Thai Food. -

I've been coming here for over 10yrs now and I'd honestly say that it's probably the best Thai street-stall flavor outside of Bangkok. (Yes, my mother worked with Thai Airways for over 30+years and I've been there quite often to be able to tell the difference.)
Now, this is not high-class thai food, it's vendor-cart street-stall type of noodles. The real stuff.
I recommend the boat noodles or pad kee mao. Also the shrimp/crab cakes and satay as appetizers. -
Review from Rasien I.
Late night cravings strike. I hear the grumble and rumble of my stomach. I throw my diet rules out the window and demand Sanamluang! my heart and stomach belong to the fried tilapia (off the menu) with the spicy thai basil sauce.
- Cash Only
- Crazy crowded parking at night on the weekends (there seems to be a valet guy in the parking lot that asks for $1 when you leave)
- can be a long wait (depends on the time of day you go)
- service is good, but nothing outstanding
- Emperors noodles = carby goodness
Many a drunken night, i've found myself here for the perfect greasy meal to prevent a next morning hangover. -
Review from Matthew C.
Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, CA
Nestled in a Thai Town strip mall with perhaps the worst parking lot in an area notorious for them, this little gem is a local favorite for late night Thai. In my dreams I imagine an alternative postwar America where the hip late night eats and popular culture touchstone, the Main street hash house, is replaced by Thai and Chinese diners...(Elvis and Pad Thai are a natural match, right?). In this alternate reality Sanamluang would have been king.
The duck soup is rich and flavorful, with broth reminiscent of pho in its consistency. The duck on rice is a simple but great dish with hunks of juicy duck with crispy skin sauteed with baby bok choi and just the right amount of sweet sauce served over a bed of white rice. The pad see euw and pad thai both demonstrate how a chef can use MSG to make your taste buds melt in ecstasy. And yes, there is MSG in there - you think these salivating drunk kids are moaning just from the booze?
This place isn't just great for late night however, and its not just frequented by the overeducated, too inebriated Harvard and Stone hipsters who have invaded Thai Town of late. You will find yourself among many Thais and just about anyone who has a taste for excellent Thai food.
Its a veritable institution and the perfect compliment to what Jitlada offers around the corner - they offer different dining experiences, so be sure to know which you're going to get.Listed in: Sunday Soup Day!

Los Angeles, CA
I'm not the biggest Thai food-eater, but I ended up here with a group. I was happy to see that the place had an A health-rating (as I've been to many an Asian restaurant with a B or dreaded C). Place isn't too big, and the inside furniture is like fast food meets donut shop. Came pretty early on a Saturday night, when there was no wait, but noticed a sign-in sheet at the door and a parking attendant, so I imagine the place gets pretty packed. Two of the people were regulars and ordered dishes that looked good, but I have no idea what they were called. The rest of us three ordered Pad Thai (clearly, we were adventurous). I thought the Pad Thai was great though. Quite a bit of chicken, two shrimps (would have liked a couple more), and very generous helping of noodles. Wish I split a different entree with someone else as I always find I get sick of eating just Pad Thai by the end... But the prices are cheap! Pad Thai was only $7.50 and I don't remember seeing any entrees much higher than that. Big portions, for cheap. My kind of place. The food was definitely good, and I'd like to come back to try some of the other offerings, but only if I was in the area. Not exactly a place I'd make a special trip out for.

La Crescenta-Montrose, CA
This is probably as authentic as you can get with Thai food in L.A. Been here for lunch and late nights or should I say early mornings after some drinking with friends and everything I've tried have been great so far.
Dishes I would recommend -
Roasted Duck noodle Soup (good to counteract the effects of alcohol!)
Fried Garlic and Pepper with Beef (comes with fish sauce on the side w/ tiny jalapeno - great for seasoning)
Ground Beef with Fried Chili and Mint Leaves (good combination of spices)
Emperor's Noodles (good noodle dish with chicken and shrimp)
Spicy Mint Leaves fried rice (very good curry flavor)
All dishes have good flavors to it and very affordable - won't definitely break the bank. The only downside would proabably be the parking which can be hard to come by at times and the place is cash only so leave the credit cards at home. -

I've been going to Sanamluang Cafe in LA and NoHo for the past 16 years. The experience has been a pleasant one. The food portion is just enough for your dollar, taste is wonderful, and the service is usually good if they're not busy with a full house. Both locations do not accept credit/debit cards, so remember to bring your cash with you. They are also open well past midnight, so this place is a step up compared to Chinese places nearby that close early. Parking is questionable sometimes... but it is still free parking compared to Thai Patio down the block.

Deceptive Advertisement.
After a long-ass drive coming from Highway 1 (AKA: Pacific Coast Highway for SoCal folks), kids were getting antsy and hungry. We had just passed Santa Barbara and wifey checked Yelp App for late-night dining in LA and chose this location due to the 4 star average.
Located in Thai Town near downtown LA, parking was a pain and it took us several more minutes of driving around the blocks to find one. Walked in and everyone in the place gave me "The Look" as if I was in a weird movie. Then it suddenly dawned on me that I was wearing my San Francisco Giants shirt and cap.
Side Note: I didn't plan on wearing my SF Giants shirt until later in our vacay, but I had spilled coffee on my shorts and shirt while driving the winding roads of Highway 1. I actually did not notice the spill until we stopped by one of the scenic areas to take a pic and I wondered why my crotch was wet. Did not realize it until later and it looked like I peed in myself. No wonder that German tourist was smirking at me. So I had to quickly change outfits right on the side of the road for everyone passing by to see.
OK, back to the scene:
Sat down and looked at the menu. At that point, we were starving so everything looked good. I decided to pick the General's Special as it had Shrimp, Duck, Pork, Noodles and some garlic in a broth. Kids and wifey also picked their dishes based on what they saw on the menu pic. I was looking around and thought this oughta be good since it was filled with locals of mixed race so typically that's an indication of a good place.
Our orders came out and the first thing I noticed was my order did not match anything close to what it looked like from the picture on the menu. The menu pic depicted an abundant amount of food and it was overflowing with everything. Mine was anemic and looked like a generic stunt double that was very malnourished. Nothing in it looked fresh and this was confirmed after one bite. One thing we did not like was it was very, very salty. Not just my dish, but everyone's dish. Not even a dash of lime can help with the saltiness of the dishes. Wifey could not even finish her dish and kids finished their due to being famished. I just ate the protein and carbs and did not bother sipping the salty broth.
Needless to say it wasn't what we expected. -

My two beefs with this place:
1. Cash only
2. No rice is included with my curry dish :( Hated going home to realize that there was no rice included. They at least should have asked if I wanted them for extra price.
I can't get enough of their pork Larb. But when ordering you have to say "Laab" but even so, they look at you all quizzical... just to repeat it enough in their minds to realize "Ohh Laab." Can't complain with the rest of their menu, it's great. I love thai food.Listed in: Really Late and DrUnk... it's…

I went at night. The food was very sweet and salty (I ordered Tom Yum in the hot pot and the fried rice). Thai tea with boba not fresh at all. The boba was very hard; I think they should take time to cook for me since they knew it's not fresh. At least heat them up, so it get softer. The service just alright.

I think this is the best Thai restaurant in the Valley. Even though I've never been to Thailand this place seems authentic. Food is good, service is quick and the place is always packed. The best part is it's open late so you can go after a long night of clubbin or bar hopping. The only downside is you might have to wait for a table a few minutes.

Been here many times. I have taken a lot of my friends here as well but that was when it used to be really really good. The food used to be awesome. But I haven't been here in years and found out that there are other way better Thai restaurant on Hollywood Blvd. so I stop coming here.
I had experienced taken the condiments twice out of our table while we're eating and put them on the other "empty" table. It happened twice on the same occasion even after you said, why did you take them away? Server just gave me a blank face and didn't even apologize. Either the server didn't understand what I said or just plain rude. They also happen to give incorrect change numerous times. Since they only take cash. I've had some friends experienced the same thing. I don't know if they can't properly count or they were just trying to screw some costumers whenever they can. Parking is such a pain! The valet guy is nice though so I always tip him. Although the place is good after clubbing coz they're open until 4 AM and of course the food is even better after having lots of alcohol. -

Satisfaction guarantee! Excellent Thai food located in Pomona and Thai Town. I have tried both location and they both are excellent. Every dishes I have ordered here were excellent. So feel free to order or be more adventurous. If you walk in you will see that the majority of customers are Thai which kind of guarantee that the food there are good.
Dishes I would recommend:
Khaaw kha moo(stewed pork leg on ric)
Pad see ew(Stirred fried horfun/flat rice noodles) with your choice of meat
Duck noodle soup: nothing to say more. You would love it!
Tom Yum Soup
Crispy chicken on rice
This place is clean. It open late at night so if you get hungry after hour or have a late night craving this place is the one to go to. The Hollywood location is packed so be patient. Also the parking is kind of small or hard to find.I can't wait to go back there again. -

Sanamluang is a diamond in a deep, dark, dank hole. If you're not looking for it, you'll miss out on this wonderful little gem.
Parking can be a bit of a pain since there isn't a lot of it but it's worth it.
Trust me.

This is my absolute favorite place to get pad kra pow with ground pork and a fried egg on top. Delicious. Open 24 hours. Cash only!!!
most things on the menu are quite good and taste how it should taste, if not better. I have a special affinity to the dish referenced in my intro.
