I just went to get a cashiers check and the gentleman that helped me was not friendly at all. He had just finished helping a customer and I usually give them some time to finish up the last transaction. About 2 minutes after, I asked him if he was ready for me. He did not make any eye contact with me but he said yeah. I proceeded to walk towards his window. I then told him I wanted a money order and he told me the machine was broken. He said he could get a cashiers check for me instead. So I did and he charged me $3 for it.  I WROTE out who to make the check out to and what the memo should say. He gave me the cashiers check, didn't thank me or say goodbye and he MISSPELLED the memo on the cashiers check!! This is so annoying!

There was a funny guy with a nice suit that's why I gave them a three.. if it wasn't for him I would give them 1 star!!!
They kept me waiting and would not return my phone calls when I was trying to get a loan and they didn't even approve the loan after I waited 3 weeks.

Once you go credit union you will never go back to a bank.  I'm not sure about the experiences of others, but I've never paid for any free accounts and I've never found the rates to be that low.  After being a customer at Wells Fargo for many moons and being treated like a piece of dung, I am more than happy to do whatever I need to in order to patronize my credit union.  In fact, because WF was so horrid...they can carry my .01 cents in my free checking account until their eyes turn blue.  :-)

I've never had a bad experience with SMCU...the people are great and they treat you like you are important to the company instead of an obstacle to get through during the day.  I banked with these guys from Montana (not always easy!) and would bank with them if I lived on the moon!!!

It's always a disappointment when a credit union starts to operate more like BofA or Wells Fargo.  Their savings, money market, and CD interest rates are some of the lowest among credit unions I researched.  When they started charging me for a free checking account, I closed my account.

Don't be fooled by the credit union label.

I had a cute little ole' beemer that I loved very much.  Unfortunately, those feelings of love were unrequited.   I got a job in Redwood City and a few months in (and a couple hundred miles of commuting to and fro (SF to RWC), the Ultimate Driving Machine up and decided it would drive no more.  Not cool.  I was in no position to buy a new car.  I'd never even had a NEW new car.  Never even really owned a car that was actually born in the decade in which I was currently living.  San Mateo Credit Union helped me out, big time. Gave me a great deal on a new car loan (got the lowest rate of anyone I know), made the process and the paper work insanely easy and within a few days, I was tooling around town in my brand new 2006 Corolla S.  Very Sporty, indeed.  My only regret is that I did not use their car-buying service, where you give them the make and model of the car you want, the price you're willing to pay, and they basically deliver your new car to your home or office.  Next time, for sure!
