Ice hockey comes to San Jose and the largest adult league in the country springs up around it.
Huh.
If you're ever passing through our little hamlet between October and JUNE (let me dream here), pick up tickets. Watching the Sharks is just one of those things you've got to do if you want to get San Jose.
For the out of towner, THE game of the year is always the weekend Red Wings game. I can't explain it but for some reason there are, without fail, like a dozen lead changes. If you can't snag that one, go for any Ducks game, or whatever team Chris Pronger is currently playing for.
If anything once HP earned a rep as one of the loudest arenas in the league, the atmosphere has only gotten better. It's like the recognition has taken a bit of the chip off our collective shoulder, so we're in this place where we have yet to rest on our fandom laurels, but have this nice nothing-to-prove vibe also.
So yeah, most fans are really, really cool. In the upper reserved you're guaranteed to be surrounded by at least one genuinely funny heckler, one way too drunk heckler and one fan heckler.
QUICK NOTE ON FAN HECKLERS: If you're in the upper reserve and you either a) lean too far forward in your seat or b) walk to your seat while the puck is in play, thus making everyone stand and blocking an entire sections view THEN some fan heckler is going to yell at you.
Don't feel bad, this has happened to all of us. I sat next to a fan heckler last year for my entire 10-game shark pak, and I swear he watched the aisle more than the ice. He once actually asked an usher for a fan etiquette card*, which he handed to a seat leaner. And the seat leaner had the best reaction. First, he was a little confused. He read the card. Then, he threw his head back and just busted up. He took out his wallet and tucked the card inside, and ceased the leaning. The leaner's reaction epitomizes the Sharks fan base more so than the fan heckler, but I'm serious, every section has a FH.
*Here's the excerpted text of the fan etiquette card:
PLEASE don't lean forward in your seat as it obstructs the view of the fan seated directly behind you.
PLEASE wait for a break in play to return to your seat.
I KNOW the guy who handed this card to you is a bit of a douche, and also I realize that hockey games should take a page from Outback Steakhouse's credo, i.e. the less the rules, the taster the deep-fried onions, but in this case these two rules actually do help with the overall fan experience and should probably be followed pretty closely. But by all means, we agree, dude who dispensed this equals total lack of tact and bit of a mouth-breather methinks. (Also, I bet you might be mildly surprised that I guessed it was a man who gave you this card, but really you shouldn't be).
The 2009-2010 season is coming up and looking forward to it! I'm going to withhold any Stanley Cup predictions until January though. I learned my lesson from last year.
Games I'm attending: 11/25 Blackhawks, 12/11 Stars, 1/9 Detroit, and 3/4 Canadiens
Booo on the Penguins game being sold out on the first day of season ticket individual ticket sales. Both Detroit games are already sold out! Lucky that I snagged a pair of tix. So looking forward to that game!

GO SHARKS!! A professional ice hockey team in San Jose that kicks some serious butt! How can you not like 'em?!?
Comcast Sports Network California & The Sharks
The Sharks owners may think they have cut a great financial deal with Comcast to broadcast the games, but they are slapping their fan base in the face and in the end it will hurt them. The only place you can view all the games is if you are Comcast Cable customer.
I went to the Sharks website and it said that Dish Network carried the Comcast Sports Network California on channel 409. I contacted Dish Network and for $30.00 a month added the channel to our service. No one mentioned that the games are blacked out in downtown San Jose. Dish Network did not even know it.
I knew there is a problem with Direct TV, but not with Dish Network. I relied on the Sharks website to have correct information. What a bunch of bull.
A lot can be said for fan pressure. Maybe a fan protest or boycott will get their attention and improve this insult to their fans. Let their advertisers know they are not reaching all the audience that they are paying for as well. Remember the fans are the ones that really pay the bills.
I love the Sharks! Sharkie is so sexy.
This was seriously the coolest freaking sporting event I have ever gone to! The intensity! You are on edge of your seat the whole time, your eyes never leaving the puck! Hoping the team scores and wins, praying that the opposing team doesnt bring on the suckery!
It was so awesome, Dany Heatleys first game as a Shark, he scores three goals and really makes a home for himself with Sharks fans.
Even the set up of the pavilion is awesome, the bathrooms were right outside where our seats were, not to mention 2 stands where you could get delicious cold beer and other beverages. The store was also right next to our seats, which was pretty cool.
They also randomly have these neon jacket wearing guys throwing free sharks shirts to the crowd and all kinds of other things that really get the fans involved. It was an awesome experience and I can't wait until my next Sharks game!
I miss Cheechoo already!!
However, it was great to see the Sharks chomp the ducks 6-0 last week. Loved Murray's hat trick and the boat loads of hats fans tossed on the ice. Even early in the season, Sharks fans are prepared!
If you've never been, definitely think about borrowing a Sharks jersey and don't be like me--I wore a pink cashmere sweater to my first game and felt like an idiot.
Also, always be prepared for the Kiss-cam...you never know when it will swoop on you and everyone will be expecting something big.
Two other tips--Goldstar sometimes has 1/2 price tix and we usually park for $3 at the public garage on Market St. Get there early (it fills up) and spend what you would have on parking at one of the happy hours on San Pedro instead (we like the $3 beers @ Firehouse).
UHH.. if you're from the City of San Jose and you are not a fan of SJ SHARKS..you are a huge disgrace [period]. Seriously, you have to get with this SJ SHARKS biz asap because one of these days they WILL win the Stanley Cup. NO DENYING IT!!
BUT if you are already a fan of the Sharks.. you're doing the right thing and you are A-W-E-S-O-M-E!
THIS IS SHARKS TERRITORY!!!
Wasn't a great season last year. Hopefully this year with the new players they will win some games. Looking forward!
Go Sharks !!!
I absoluetely love the San Jose Sharks! I have been fan since i was 4. They have definatley been getting better over the years. The games that i dont have tickets to watch at the arena, i watch at home. Go Sharks! Sharks managment has done a great job. I love the intensity of the game. Espcially when you have front row seats! You dont realize how big these men are, or how tough they play until you get front row seats!
Ok, so this is a review specifically for the Select a Seat program they run for season tickets.
They have streamlined this puppy into a nice event. They make the process really fan friendly. Free drinks (soda, water) for you prior to checking out the available seats. Then, you wander around looking for the right seat the upcoming season. They also, update the available seats within minutes of people changing their seats. It's not a free for all.
The Sharks management have done a good job at making these subtleties a notch above your typical ticket buying experience. So, stop by Section 116, Row 20 and say "hey".
Oh, and thanks for fellow yelper, Rho, for spending 30 minutes while I checked out 3 different seat locations.
San Jose has no other teams other than you...
You show that Silicon Valley has something to speak for other than the technology boom and the overwhelmingly large male to female ratio...
SF teams fluctuate year after year...Oakland too...
But you stay in the top. Despite being in Sunny Cali Cali you beat the crap out of the East Coast teams, kick the Candian's asses (aay?), and make it into the playoffs consistently...
MINUS ONE STAR FOR CHOKING........ AGAIN!!!!!!
..you are killing me guys. I practically lost my voice the other day yelling at the TV screen in Woodstock's. What an upset.
If going to a Sharks game doesn't make you love some NHL action, I dont know what will
What you get with a SJ Sharks game...
1) Intensity! Yes EVERY last man, lady and child is wearing a jersey, rooting for a team and supremely into the iced madness.
2) Men. Yes, men enjoy hockey. And so should you..they come in groups, drink beer and YOU my lady friend should do the same
3) Hockey is so damn fun. The arena is smaller, the sport is FAST and the fellas are rough. Think boxing meets snow cones meets mayhem with a delicious sourdough pretzel on top...yuuum
4) A pivotal year. Should we have won the cup last year (& the last year, the year before, the year before...okay you get the picture)? The answer is yes and we have a lot to own up to.
Come October 1 '09 its hockey time. Save a few evenings in your life to watch a game, and if youre feelin good head on to HP pavilion (yes you can drink on the Caltrain!) to catch a live game. Theres nothing like it!!
The Bay Area was your Oyster , SJ Sharks.
With the 49ers and Raiders years away from being a playoff contenders, with the Giants and A's rebuilding, and with the Warriors going from "We Believe" to " We Got Deceived", the Sharkies were in prime position to show the rest of the country that the best hockey team in the NHL ( ahem, regular season) resides in sunny Northern California.
But nooooooooooooooooooo.......another playoff disappointment.
Big props for making the playoffs year after year in an otherwise mediocre Bay Area sports landscape, but we want more.
You want more.
There's always next year, right?
Note: remind me NEVER to bet on pro hockey, ever again.
Gah.
Love going there for hockey games and concerts. I love the setup. I have been there for many many sharks games which i just love hockey. Then I have been there for some great concerts. The place is great but like anything the food is over priced.
This team stinks...
How in the hell can a 1st-seed team be ELIMINATED IN THE FIRST ROUND of the playoffs by an 8th-seeded team ??
What is wrong with you ??
This is the 4TH YEAR IN A ROW that you've been eliminated from the playoffs...
San Jose - as much as I want to like you and root for you - I COMPLETELY GIVE UP !!!
You suck, period !
I went to my very first Sharks game last night.
1 downed ref
1 nasty beer (bud)
2 churros
1 brawl on the ice
5 goals
1 at-home rowdy crowd
1 win to become the #1 team
What more could a girl ask for?
I've been a season ticket holder for a few seasons now and as long as I continue to have an income, I will renew every season to come.
Don't knock hockey till you've had a visit to a game.
Got my girlfriend hooked and many others, awesome sport, awesome fans, awesome team.
Go Sharks!
Hockey, it's the coolest game on earth! =)
It might take some getting use to, learning all the rules, the little nuisances, etc - but in the end you'll love it. Been a Sharks fan since their inception and all I ask if for is a Stanley Cup before I leave this earth. Go Sharks!
Hands down, the best sports team in the Bay Area (last night's loss notwithstanding).
Great atmosphere at the Tank, fun fans, hunky players. What's not to love??
Let's get real, sometimes you win and other times you lose. We lost, oh well-- get over it.
I just love how spirited everyone is. Seriously, walking to the tank on gameday is so fun. The games are fun, even when we lose.
We didn't win, bummer but if you're going to be a fair weather fan, perhaps you should put on a Ducks jersey.
My kids were not too happy that I didn't renew our Shark's Season tickets. And I regret it too, because the Sharks are indeed one of the most successful and winning franchise in the Bay Area and one of the best teams in the NHL. If I try to get those Season tickets back and if the team is still winning, it would be near impossible. "Hey being a ticket holder for both the Golden State Warriors and the San Jose Sharks are not cheap, you know!"
At one time, I was also a ticket holder for "all" four Bay Area teams. How I got them? I have my connections and hook-ups.
It's a good thing that my agency is big and have some of my closest colleagues as a Shark's ticket-holder as well. One of my colleague is leaving out of town for the holidays and have two extra tickets for the Saturday game versus the New York Rangers and Tuesday night game versus the Vancouver Canucks. The only problem is that all of us can't go to the two games with just two tickets for each game. So I took my daughter to the Saturday game and wife took Jr. to the Tuesday night game. Consider it, a early Christmas present from my co-worker.
My goodness, our seats were at Section 103 and those were some great seats with the face value at $125.00 each (Yeah, pricey indeed). My kids, esp. my daughter loves Sharkie, the team's mascot and Goaltender Evgeni Nabokov. There is something cool about a guy behind a goalie mask, when she sees him protecting the net from opponents from scoring and making an incredible save, she yells, "Nabby, Nabby!" But when an opponent scores past the Shark's net-minder, she frowns and looks down worrisome in tears. I just picked the arctic sport within the last few years, while my kids know the hockey terms such as: icing, offside, cross-checking, neutral-zone... way too early.
My daughter also got a bonus treat when "Nabby" was named top star for the Saturday night game. She cheer happily and will always cherish that night forever.
Tuesday night, Daughter and I was watching at home, while Wifey and son were watching the hockey game live at HP Pavilion. Watching the hockey game live is a completely different atmosphere with spectator's adrenaline is pumping. The Sharks won both games and "Nabby" was star of both games. What a Christmas present!
With the Shark's ongoing success, I should be knocking my head for not renewing the Shark's Season Tickets.

I wasn't into hockey but this is a good team to get into when you're not really sure what's going on. I loved the part where the crazy guys got all angry ans started to punch each other.
Go Sharks!
I live in Vegas. Our only claim to fame has something to do with sin. No pro sports teams.
I grew up in San Jose and I used to skate here pretty frequently. Got a chance to skate with the Sharks as a kid, and it was awesome!
Surprisingly, hockey is one sport I hate watching on TV.
However, the Sharks games are lots of fun, although I've only been to one and it was a loooong time ago. But I'll never forget falling on my ass next to some of the best hockey players ever.
I love watching hockey. Live is best, but TV is great too, especially if you happen to be in Canada during the Stanley Cup playoffs. Whether it's Calgary, Edmonton, or even Medicine Hat, it's not hard to find a big screen and a big game under Don Cherry's expert and blunt guidance. I have also been to an NHL game in Canada (the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place) and the game excitement and knowledge is truly a step above what I'm used to in the good old US of A.
I also grew up in NW Iowa and going to Minneapolis to watch the old Minnesota North Stars was an annual family tradition. However, both my brother and I were more than a little "disappointed" when the team moved to Dallas. Since that time, I've gravitated towards the Sharks, who were initially seeded with a few North Stars players who I got to watch the first season at the Cow Palace. My brother gave up on the NHL entirely and is now a rabid college hockey fan. Think Golden Gophers.
My son and I went to see the Sharks play the Edmonton Oilers last night at The Tank. We had a fine time, despite the fact that the Sharks lost in OT, even with all those shots on goal. Hard to beat a hot goalie.
Other random notes from our game experience:
Hockey keeps my son's attention better than basketball or baseball. Despite some protest he stayed the whole game, whereas I'm lucky to get him past the 4th inning at either ATT or the Colliseum.
The singer did a great version of both the Canadian and US national anthems. There must be a lot of Canadians in the Silicon valley, as there was a lot of folks singing along during Oh Canada.
I really like the more recent NHL rule changes that have really opened up the skating game. And the "speeded up" nature of the OT and Shoot Outs really adds to the excitement.
The Tank really is a nice house to play hockey. The place is clean, staff is friendly, food selection and pricing is OK, and the video/sound selections in the arena can be rocking! The arena is also easy to find and escape after the game, especially if you're lucky enough to find the free parking in the Stockton street area. The only thing I don't like is the having to sit back in your chair and not lean in (so as not to block the view of the guys in back).
As much as I want to give my favorite team in my favorite sport a five star rating, this year has not lived up to my expectations for a few reasons.
I miss those games from years past with players like Damphousse, Nolan, Ricci, S. Thornton where they put their hearts out on the ice for a full 60 minutes. It seems like our superstar Sharks lay it on the line for the first 20-30 minutes at the start of the game, or wait until the 3rd period to start playing with any intensity.
I also have a complaint about this years feel at the tank. In years past the entertainment value seemed a lot stronger. The video clips they played from movies, and the songs, would pump the fans up, also what happened to the pair of old guys from the Muppets that would ridicule the teams before the games or a video feed of Sharkie ridiculing other team/mascots. Most of all the Green Day goal song irks me, it just doesn't get the fans together like RRP2.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Sharks and follow everygame, tv/radio/at the tank, but for some reason it doesn't seem as great as years past or even as early as last season.
EDIT: In DW I trust. Great signings getting hometown discounts for Cheech a while back, JT, and Michalek. I hope that the new jerseys are not horrible. Also...when are they gonna deal with the darn Green Day song.
EDIT 2: It's back! na na na na na HEY!!! Upped to 4.8 stars! 4.9 when I get used to the new jerseys (looks like pajamas to me but they are damn soft). 5 stars when we parade the Cup around SJ. Expecting to see Setoguchi be a regular this year!
Welcome to Teal Town Baby.
I went to my first hockey game in 1992, I had just turned 12, my dad took me to my very first game, it was in the Cow Palace at the time in Daly City. That was the point of infection, I started to skate, joined hockey leagues and more importantly my relationship with the Sharks grew through the years as I've seen the good and the vividly remember the rebuilding years. But most importantly I love the Sharks fans. I love Black Armor Thursdays! I love this franchise!!!
Here comes the Chechoo Train!
like a whimpering dog that comes back to the one that beats him, the next season of hockey is upon us and the teal and black faithful have returned. we got rid of errorhoff, added malhotra, heatley, and some of our worcester boys. gone is our loyal backup goalie brian "bobby" boucher, gone is our russian defenseman, and hello germany (how many damn germans are ON our team ?!). the roster looks different, it looks good, but i'm still nervous. i thought last year was our year--can i HANDLE another letdown like that ? pass the cymbalta, please.

Someone find me a virgin so I can sacrifice him/her for a Stanley Cup win.
I was in town visiting and Dad gave me the tix to Saturday's game...before he realized we were playing the Red Wings...SUCKA!!! Hahahahaha, it was a fab time, as usual! Good job boys! Keep up the good work and bring home The Cup!!!
Oh yeah, and, proud to be a part of the LOUDEST RINK IN THE LEAGUE!!! WOOT!
Shark Bytes
Tonight I was at my 3rd game this season. Sharks have won all three - duh, they are 8-0 at home so far, so of course they won all three. And 2 of the 3 were come-from-behind overtime victories - most wicked.
Sharks are 1st place in the Western Conference and have the most points of all NHL teams.
The Sharks beat both the Redwings and Penguins last week - the teams that played in the Stanley Cup finals last year.
My nephew is a huge Redwings fan - so I finally have something to bug him about since ... well ... um ... I guess since the Sharks joined the league.
It's a long season, so not counting chickens yet (or redwings). But it's a great start.
PS, last year we did a a little party in a suite at a Sharks game as an un-official thing for a Make-a-Wish child. The Sharks organization heard what we were doing and had Sharkie, Mike Ricci, and others come by. They are a totaly classy organization.
7-1!!
What else can you say? A lot of people write of the San Jose Sharks as chumps who can't get past the second round of the playoffs...I say, SCOREBOARD bitches!!! MWahahaha...I went to tonights game and was utterly amazed at the dominance theSharks showed in this game. Every game I have seen this season the sharks have risen to the occasion and have showed why they need to be considered the hands down favorite for Lord Stanley's cup and perhaps the Presidents Cup...
I started this review on Monday but lost the time to finish and we have officially lost for the first time at home in almost a year. You know, it's cool, San joseans, don't stress, the sharks still have a lead of 20 points over Anaheim with two games in hand. We have virtually made the playoffs and can feasibly make number one seed too. I am excited, I hope to see some vigor on Sat vs the Wings. I f'ing hate those guys, I hope we beat the shit out of them...Other than that, you guys are awesome, thanks for bringing joy of sport to our great city...Good Luck and I will see you in the playoffs!!!
WE ARE A HOCKEY TOWN!!!!!
I LOVE MY SHARKS TO DEATH!!!!!!
Im a spots fan but hockey is my all time favorite sport to watch I get excited every season just to watch my Sharks play.
I even made my two year old nephew say GO SHARKS!
So now every time he see's my shark shirt or bag he says GO SHARKS!!
LETS GOOO SHARKS BRING THAT CUP HOME BABY!!!!!
I was born and raised in the South Bay...but sadly, have NEVER attended a game. I FINALLLLLLYYYYY got to go last week with my boyfriend cause I bought tickets for him for valentine's day. And MAN...I'm SO SO SO hooked!!! Out of all the bay area teams, I think I had the MOST fun watching the sharks. We had great seats in the 8th row, and we got to see a TON of fights really close up. The game is non stop from beginning to end, and for someone who doesn't really follow hockey, I was able to figure out what was going on for the most part.
The HP pavilion is also REALLY clean and roomy compared to Oracle, and its not as big of a headache as Candlestick/Monster Park. I seriously had the time of my life and can't wait to go again. Now all I need is some $$$$$ to buy some more of those very expensive tickets!
Awesome hockey team having an amazing season. These guys are a thrill to watch and the fans have been die hard for as long as I can remember. Lord Stanley's Cup belongs in San Jose!
GO SHARKS!!!
I have been a fan of the sharks for years on end =P. (yup, I'm a hockey girl.)
They are great players and are an amazing team.
I have been to so many games in the past seasons I can't even keep track anymore. I love my boys and gotta support them (If you ever wanna find me, I'll be in Sect. 114, Row 2 ;)).
I don't have much to add on here, everyone pretty much said it all.
GO SHARKS!!!!!!
;D
You're still frustrating me...thanks for a great regular season, but every April you seem to loose your heart.
