This is my favorite driving range!
1.) Not in a ghetto area,
2.) has a second floor,
3.) nice pathway leading in
4.) chipping area
5.) 9?hole games.
6.) Tees are provided! Because once again, it's not in the ghetto where ppl take the tees.
Driving range:
One of the nicest driving ranges I've been to so far. There are two levels with about 10-15 spots on each level. For $10, you get a little over 100 balls. The range was well kept with plenty of flags to tell you how far you hit the balls.
It was surprisingly very well kept for a municipal golf course. I wish there were more places like this in SF.

Great place to go after a long day at work.
I suck at hitting the ball, but it's really relaxing just trying to perfect your swing.
That's all.
5 stars :-)
PS - wear gloves, because the last time I went, i rubbed off about an inch of skin on my left thumb. Couldn't jack off for a week. haha just kidding..or am i.

Been living in North SJ for 6 years and I finally found this place thanks to my golf buddy. Hit the back 9 this weekend and no back up at all. Although I did notice that the 1st tee was backed up 2-3 groups. The course is very flat. There are sand bunkers regularly placed around the greens to make approaches difficult. Maybe a handful of water and wilderness hazzards. This course, specially with its straightforward layout, is ideal for beginners. Course fees were reasonable, conditions were above average, and the marshall did a good job of keeping the pace smooth. The course shop looked well stocked too; wish I had time to look around. And the double decker driving range was nice too. My golf buddy tells me that he never has any problems finding a stall when he stops by during the week. I'll be back here sooner rather than later.
Great place to practice, but not the best to play at.
There practice area and driving range are fantastic. The driving range is a double decker so you will most likely get a spot to practice your shots. The Chipping area is fantastic and well kept. The pitching area is not as well kept but still playable and fun when you practice long pitches. The putting green is great but not a real challenge. The driving range is open till 11 in the summer but during winter I believe they close around 9. The only problem I have with the practice area are some of the people who use it. My friend and I will usually meet a player who thinks he owns the hole and shout at us or cuss us out for hitting a ball near "THEIR" hole.
The Actual greens are a good place to play but not much of a challenge. It is great for beginners. They also offer Segways to use as golf carts but you need to be certified but getting certified is fun and easy; just ask the people in the pro shop. Over all this a great place to come after work and shoot a bucket. Their bucket starts at $4 for a small.
San Jose Muni is actally in pretty good condition considering the amount of play it gets. I find the course a little bit on the easier side - but it is what it is. The worst part about SJM is the terrible pace. 6-hour rounds are the norm unless you join their club and play at the buttcrack of dawn.
Easy, flat, wide open course that is fun to play (maybe because I post my best scores here). They have some attractive holes, but the last time I went there were a couple that were under construction... infact there wasn't even a green for #7. Overall it's about $60 for one person with cart which isn't bad for a few hours on the links.
This is just for the range:
I come here to be the next Michelle Wie. No, just kidding. I come here to practice so I don't have to count how many golf balls I lose on an actual course.
This place is decent.
The good:
1. Convenient location, close to 880
2. Buckets are reasonably priced
3. The lower level has heaters (great for this time of the year)
4. Lots of space - I've always been able to find a spot.
5. It has a pretty decent putting area
The bad:
1. It's a public range, so the mats aren't in the greatest conditions
2. Someone is always playing some kind of loud obnoxious music that just happens to be not your taste.
3. There are lots of people who smoke. Just because it's outdoors doesn't mean people around can't smell it. It stinks. A lot.
tips: bring an ipod so you don't have to listen to someone else's music coming through bad speakers. And possibly air freshener to spray around the people who smoke like there's no tomorrow.
been here on 2 separate occasions and am quite happy playing
here. its.... nice. especially on a sunny day. there's a 2story range.
and there's a 18 hole course.
so here's the deal....
1) Range
$3 will get you 34balls.
$5 will get you 51balls.
(so on so forth... sorry. only absorbed 2 prices)
2) Putting Practice
just by the range, there are there's a little green
where you can practice your putting skills.
3) on the other side of this site, there's the golf shop
where you will be able to.....
a) check-in
b) golf shop for purchases
c) small lil cafe / bar for drinks, snacks, and food
4) Golfcourse
its a nice, fairly easy and wide golf course. very much
suggested for beginners.
you may walk with a pull-cart, or you may rent a cart....
a) if you put your name for the cart rental: $70
(you get $1 when you return the key @ the end)
b) if you're only riding with a fellow golfer: $64
c) if you're walking your way through the course: $50 (i think)
note#1
personally, i dont recommend the walk especially if you're a
beginner. you'll be hitting those ball all over the map and you
will need to save the strength to make through 18holes. cart,
highly recommended!!
note#2
bring at least 2 water btls with you if its a sunny day. there
aren't as many water stops on this course. key to success,
stay hydrated!!
note#3
snacks/sandwiches is always a plus too. yes there are
phone booth where calls can be made. occassionally,
you'll see those food cart rolling down the course, but
no guarantee on these courses. just a thought.
note#4
summer's almost here. sunblock is a must out here!!!
no really, you don't want to burn guys. its just ooglie.
note#5
very much recommended to hit at the range to warm up
before your tee-off time.
i will come here any time!! its a easy play, despite by
horrible score of 137. *woot woot*

Looks like SJ Muni Golf Course will be having a demo day this coming Saturday, May 2, 10am-4pm. All the big manufactures will be there showing off their equipment. I great time to try equipment from TaylorMade, Ping, Titleist, Callaway, Hogan, Cobra, Adams and more. Should be a fun day.

My friend and I came here this past Sunday during their super twilight rate. $32/each for an 18 hole round of golf. They even threw in a free cart. What a deal! The course was nicely maintained and it's great for beginners since it's fairly flat. there were FOUR par 3's.
TEN par 4's. And FOUR par 5's.
I left this place feeling happier than when I first got here. But it could have been all the wine/beer we were drinking while playing.

It was my first time here and I really am just going to comment on how busy the place is. There were people waiting for me to finish chipping. I had about 30 balls left and being new I was nervous-someone was staring at me really hard-waiting for me to finish. Sigh...

I never was a fan of golf untill my BF took my hear a couple of times.
Since he has the golf clubs and he wanted to put them to use. Low and
behold like me he is also not a avid golfer. So we go hear and try not
to look like fools. Ha Ha so we start at the driving range of course.
The upper deck is awsome especially if you don't know what you are
doing really. The lower deck was full. I totally enjoyed my self. The
price is reasonable for the use of the drive range. You can also use
the putting green to practice as well. I dunno if that's what you call it?
goes to show my golf knowledge. Ha ha .
But Ya I give it 4 stars cause it's close to my home and the price.

When I was in high school, our golf team played at SJ Muni all of the time. You would think that a school like Bellarmine would have their pick of any of the great courses in the South Bay but no, we played Oakridge (now closed), Riverside (now closed), Spring Valley (terrible) and SJ Muni.
It was a good course, not great but good and since we played it for free, I guess I have to give it 4 stars. But if I had to pay for it, I would drop it a lot. It's just not that great of a course. Flat, dull, wide and crowded. That's SJ Muni to me.

so.. i've only been here twice.. came here with friends..
turned out to be pretty fun..
balls are somewhat cheap.. 70 balls for $7.
we were playing on the upper level.. which is cool..
it's pretty relaxing here at night since the little froggies are croaking..
and the bats are busy eating the moths and chirping away..
i love the wildlife.. haha
i just love the whole environment.. the last time we went it was really packed.. and this time it was really empty.
weekdays are definitely more quiet.

Just recently joined their Pace Setters club, which basically is an agreement you sign to promise to complete a round within 4 hours. (they have similiar clubs at Santa Theresa (not weekends) and Summitpoint). They only provide T-Times on weekends to Pace Setters until 9:30am, and can get times 2 weeks in advanced. I love playing here now. No more 6 hour rounds with 3 groups waiting at par 3 holes. We can get done before noon and have the entire day left. This is the way golf should be played. No more slow play. Pick up after 12 and write down 8.
This place is great. I'm not a golfer by any means, but I think the driving range is AWESOME. It has 2 tiers and I like going to the second level since I can see the whole field from up there. They offer club rentals too so you don't have to buy your own clubs. While I'm not interested in playing 18 holes, I can hang out in the driving range all day long and stay entertained. I save my putting for miniature golf at Golf Land.
I went to the driving range here yesterday. The gravel parking lot looked small, but there were a ton of cars - at 3pm! What, people don't have to work anymore? Wait, I was there too. Hmm.. never mind.
I like that the driving range is a double decker. The sun was out and it was great to be outside and hitting some balls! $5 got me 51 balls. What I didn't like was the fact that the ball machine only takes exact change. So, if you don't have that, you gotta walk over to the golf shop (down at the other end of the parking lot) to get change. There are two ball machines. The one I was standing in front of didn't want to take my money. The guy standing next to me started grumbling because his machine took his money, but didn't give him any balls! If they could fix that problem, this place would be awesome. I haven't played this course yet (as I no longer live down the street from here), but I think I would visit again the next time I visit my parents. I'd probably do the 9-hole course and not the 18, only because I'm lazy and my bag is heavy.
Oh! But you can rent segways instead of golf carts! How cool is that?

As a beginner golfer, I've really enjoyed this course. The fairways are wide and forgiving so even a lousy shot has a good chance of being playable. There are enough bunkers and water to make it challenging but not so much that is it discouraging. Play can sometimes be slow (I'm obviously not the only beginner out there), but they've improved this with the Pacesetter Program.
A couple of other great things -- lessons with Berne and segways. Instruction includes videotaping so you can see you're swing and your improvement. As for the segways, take a 45 minute free class and you can use a segway on the course. Super fun!
So I'm no golfer, but I do love to wack a few balls off the tee at the driving range area of this golf course. A bucket of balls is a little more pricey than other places but not by much and since this place has a double decker driving range with lights, it's pretty convenient for the lunch breakers or people who have a day off during the week.
Fairly well maintained course. It's a basic layout with a few interesting holes. The course is slightly above average for a muni. Downside is that (a) it's overpriced for the quality, and (b) the staff is, while not rude, they are less than helpful and indifferent. The grill is not bad though.
I've also taken lessons from the head pro. I would rate him as average. I can name better and worse area pros.
We had a corporate golf outing here.
I'm not saying this is true of *my* co-workers, but many men dislike losing on the golf course to a young woman.
I've been golfing since childhood, so I'm pretty good. Yet I get nervous how others (especially co-workers) will respond when I beat them.
My nerves were exacerbated by the fact that at this course, the lady tees are at a *humongous* advantage. Seriously, on some holes the lady tees were at a 100 yard advantage.
So. Is it less demeaning for my male coworkers to be crushed by a young woman from the lady tees, or to be merely beaten by a young lady from the men's tees?
I chose to go from the lady tees. And I came in first. But because of the silly lady tees, I feel like I cheated! Boo San Jose Municipal Golf Course lady tees! Boo!!!!

One of the better community golf areas in the Bay Area: their practice facility is comprehensive and their course is a good level for all.
Let's start with the practice facility...lots of spots for range balls. The mats are pretty fresh and not worn out...they come with tees...two stories. Free chipping area. Nice putting area near the tee box. Kicks Mariner's Point's butt.
The course is very flat and very easy, making it a good course for bringing together golfers of all levels. For the most part, people who play here, play at a pretty good pace and there aren't that many times when a marshall is needed. One neat feature that I want to try is riding the Segway carts. You have to take a short training course before you're permitted to ride them...I actually saw someone tip over in one of those on the course though.
This is a great course for a number of reasons.
For those not yet ready for 18 holes of golf, there is a huge, double-tiered driving range which is lit late into the night. There is also a decent restaurant and bar in the club house. The Pro Shop has a moderate selection of items. Truthfully, I can't advise buying anything more than some balls or a glove here.
The course itself is great for both beginners and advanced golfers. It is very flat and in most cases, it is wide open. The greens have very little contouring, making it an excellent opportunity for high-handicappers and newbies to learn how to putt a straight line rather than worrying about some crazy double-break on the way to the hole. The only downside is that the tee times are too close. (7 minute separations) This makes for HUGE backups later in the day. The city really needs to think about going to at least 8 minute starts given the number of newbies and hackers out there.
The slope rating is only 117 from the Black tees making this one of the more forgiving courses in the Bay Area. For advanced golfers, it's 6700 yards from the tips.
San Jose recently began renting Segways. If you've never tried it, it's the absolute coolest way in the world to get around 18 holes. Don't show up at the course thinking you can get a five-minute briefing and be off on your own. There are two classes per day and it takes a full hour to learn how to use one. Take the class a couple days before your tee time.

This is one of the nicer maintained muni courses I've played at. I just returned from NYC and we played Rockand State Park GC, which is supposed to be a pretty lush and well kept track. SJ muni made that place look like a dump. Compare it to a place like the track down the street from me, Santa Clara Golf and Tennis -- they let that place go to crap.
Muni is definitely over-priced for the level of course it is. If you are anywhere around a mid-teen or lower handicap you will think this course is boring as hell. Even players with wild hooks or slices will find themselves able to scramble for pars and bogeys because what would be lost balls on more punitive courses turn into approach shots from two fairways over at SJ Muni. One of my buddies, who shall remain nameless (James), hits the ball so hard you sometimes wonder if it stole something from him. He doesn't always send it straight, though. One memorable day he hit his tee shot on 15 so far right it landed on the fairway for # 10. He then proceeded to stick a 4-iron in there to 10 feet and make birdie. Boo.
If you are serious about golf, pay a little extra to play The Ranch, Cinnabar, Eagle Ridge, or Coyote Creek. For the same price, Santa Teresa is a better challenge. Better yet, join NCGA for the discount and make the drive to Poppy Ridge or Poppy Hills and play at those AWESOME courses for the same price as Muni.
So why would I give this place 4 stars if I'm bagging on the course, you ask? Well, the people are friendly, the clubhouse and bar are nice and they really do take the money they gouge from you and put it back into course maintenance.
This place is just really chill - not a lot of stuck up golf geeks looking down at beginners, but also not clueless pimple-faced kids who don't give a crap about the customer. Muni is full of regulars, whether it's on the course, at the range or in the bar. I never go there without running into a bunch of guys I know. They greet me in a hearty "hail fellow well met" kinda way, I nod like a badass in acknowledgment and it makes me feel better about myself as a person. What more can you ask for?
Oh, at the grill, order a rib eye steak sandwich with BBQ sauce. Some pretty good eatin' for a golf course.

I play here all the time. It is nicely maintained as the greens and fairways are usually nice for the play. Can call in one week ahead for tee times and the green fees are very reasonable for the Bay Area.
Has a well stocked pro shop, a two-tiered driving range, club fitting, and lessons available.
This is one muni course that makes a city proud.
Hole 18 is a nice straight long par 5 to finish on. Then to the bar where a host of drinks and beer await while watching Tiger Woods win another tourney on the wide screen TV's. Nice grill by the bar serving burger and hot dog fare with some other golf shack type staples.
Nice place, nice people, nice course.

I have only really used the driving range here but it is a nice course. Spacious, well-maintained, and well-stocked. The driving range has a nice large deck to hit from which is a joy to use in the early summer mornings! I totally recommend this for anyone!

This course is great, especially for a muni course. the whole course layout is pretty flat, but there are a couple of surprise... The fairway are wide and a lot of sand trap. Just have to worry about the wind and you can have a good round. For the $$$ I would rather play at Santa Teresa its more challenging and it a lot nicer.
However, SJ Muni is a great place to pratice your game since they have 2 levels with 40+stall, 2 bunker to work your sand game, chipping, pitching green and putting green. the putting green require you to walk to the club house. too damn far from the range.
The Staff are cool, but they can be a dick-head a time. Usually, when someone is giving them crap about their tee time. so they will be a dick-head to you. I can't blame for that.
I would recommend you play at San Jose Muni because it a good course in the area.
This is a review for the driving range only.... I have never been to the driving range before nor have I ever hit a golf ball. My boyfriend took me here to teach me how to hit balls.
I was at first a little intimidated because I was afraid people might laugh at me because I suck. But this place is pretty beginner friendly.
I had a good time .

SJ Muni is a pretty good course for a muni course. The fairways didn't look too beat up and the greens were ok for the most part.
It's a pretty easy course. Hell, i was shooting a 78 through 16, which can tell you something about the course because I'm a hack.
I can't believe that I forgot to review this course...I've played here more times than I can remember.
There's not too much to worry about here, just alot of straightforward holes with minimal hazards. To my knowledge, I believe there's only 1 hole with a water hazard (par 3 17th). It's a good place to hone in your game. I'd say the only real downside is the pace of play, which the administration has been trying to deal with through a Pace Setter program. I'm not quite sure how that's been working out for them though.
The food is alright, nothing to write home about. The pro shop is the same type of caliber, but the staff is helpful and curteous.
I would have to rate this course 4 stars because of a couple of key improvements:
Pace of play: Completing a round here used to take an easy 5 hours if you start in the mornings due to below average golfers getting prime tee times. However SJ Muni management introduced this new program that promotes maintaining proper pace called "Pace Setter Program." This is an online agreement golfers need to agree to keep up with the pace of play and not fall behind. Once you agree to this program, your issued a pin number and are able to book a prime tee time online or over the phone.
Online booking: They recently introduced this a couple years ago and it definitely helped me out figuring out what tee times are left instead of calling to the pro shop.
Segways: An alternative to riding a cart or walking is to ride the segway. Its free to get a license, but quite expensive to use on the course. I believe its 20+ dollars, however they are only 1 of 2 course in the bay area that offers the segway.
Overall: Course conditions are generally great, greens are not as fast but roll true not bumpy. Great flat course to walk, and shanking a shot a few things does not necessary mean automatic bogey here since its side open. The proshop is fully stocked, but getting new clubs here is still expensive than online. The resturant food is decent here. I always grab a hotdog and load it up with onions, relish, cheese, ketcup, etc. Grilling the hotdogs makes it taste great.
SJ Muni is a pretty nice golf course as far as municipal courses go. 6700 yards from the tips, par-72. It's an easy course in the sense that the only major factor you have to think about is wind speed. The course is flat for the most part the entire way through. Pretty much all of the holes set up perfectly for those who tend to hit their tee shots left-to-right. The front nine is pretty standard for muni courses. Not many terrain features, and not many places where you can get into trouble. The back nine requires slightly more thought than the front. More terrain features, and a couple fairways that require a well-placed tee shot. It's a pretty good course for those who feel that it's time to put what they've learned on the range on the course. Greens and fairways are large and forgiving, and the course is usually kept up very well.
Edit: They raised their rates. $50 weekday. That's a bit much for this course.
Pretty good overall course for the average golfer. (+18 handicap) The fairways are fairly wide which is why I like to play here. You can almost take the driver out on all par 4's and 5's.
Greens are generally flat w / little movement. (No tiered greens) Usually sloped back to front, especially the 18th....
Practice area is good w / an upstair range when the bottom gets too full. (Lights at night if you can see that far) Chipping area as well as a few sand traps.
The round can be a long one if your playing on the weekends... I have heard of 5 hours........
This is a great course for being a muni. The prices won't hurt your wallet too much and the staff is friendly. For you night owls like me, the range is open pretty late and also has a lit short game practice area complete with bunkers to hit out of.
The actual course is kept in pretty good condition but is not very difficult: flat and open. Expect your round to take longer than usual on weekends as I have gotten stuck behind many groups that either don't know etiquette or just ignore it (3 or 4 tee shots all while 2 other groups are waiting at the tee box), but that is to be expected at a municipal course.
I love the fact that the driving range closes late... 10PM every day! :) plus the balls are super cheap! we got 68 balls for 6 bucks! :) only down side is that the machine takes swipey cards and exact moola so you gotta come with ones and fives.

I'm a SJ Muni faithful. It's tied with Santa Clara's course as my go to 18. Its a pretty stress free course where you won't lose a lot of balls if you are playing even remotely decently. The location is great for Valley workers to get to together for an afternoon round - they even have shotgun scramble tournaments if you wanted to put a little league together. My newest favorite thing about SJM is the free segway scooter lessons!! Although I like to walk this course, usually the play is slow enough to where you don't fall behind the group in front of you (even though they have done a lot to improve the pace) plus you get more exercise. Even though this is a staple in my golf diet, it gets just 3 stars as the course is completely flat (Santa Clara is cheaper and considerably more interesting and for just a little bit more money and a bit of drive there are much way better courses) pus the staff has a country club snobbishness towards 99% of its customers, I think the only people they don't talk down to are other employees that play. Also, the course is almost always packed and this is a bit a of detraction. But its a public course smack in the middle of one of the biggest cities in America so what do you expect.

Believe it or not, I played here for the first time ever last weekend.
Pros: Very easy, but fun. Fairly decent greens. Pretty long.
Cons: It took forever to get on. The staff didn't seem to have good control.
Over all a good experience. I'll play here more often...
