I don't know how he does it. I am NOT getting us another pet. You suckered me into the dog, the lizards, the frogs, we considered a turtle, once ago had the guinea pig...her name was Baby Love, such a fluffy girl, and I don't like fish! Somehow you keep getting me to regularly tour the nearby animal shelters. I'll look, that's it! Lookey, no touch.
Monterey Rd. Animal Shelter is like a posh resort for abandoned animals....as good as it gets before they find a home that loves them....not mine.
They don't show that many animals most of them are housed in the back in a pre-showing stage...cleaning,vaccines, lost pets, etc. But I wasn't looking anyways!

This is a great place if you are looking to adopt a dog or a cat. We adopted our then 3-month-old pup back in Sept of 2007. Ever since, we've been going back there looking for our second pup. So far, no luck. Their web site info is pretty up-to-date, so if you are thinking of adopting one, I suggest you keep on checking to see if there is any dog/cat that you would like to meet.
The staffs there are very friendly, and the place is very clean. As much as they want to find new homes for as many kittens and pups as they can quickly, they also really make sure to find the right match.
All adoptions come with the first year registration free of charge. All dogs and cats are neutered or spayed, health condition checked, all shots done, micro-chipped and ready to go. Our pup was only 3 months old at that time, so we were asked to come back when he turned 4 months old to get his rabies shot. They also did that for free.
The adoption fee for a young pup (under 6 months old) are a bit higher. For ours, it was $125.
Anyway, our pup just turned 1 year old earlier this month. It's been just joy to have him around us every day. I would hope that more people are going to look for a dog or a cat here before they, almost by default, go to a breeder.
I come to this location once a month to drop off bags of newspapers and pet supplies. I always avoided entering the place because I wasn't brave enough to see the animals stuck in cages begging for someone to take them home.
I finally entered the facility last weekend and visited all the animals. It wasn't what I pictured it to be. I expected unkempt kennels with crazed cats and dogs everywhere. The place was really clean and welcoming. The kennels were well maintained and somewhat calm. The volunteers did their best to keep the animals company.
I'm still a wuss because I left the joint crying. I wanted to take all the animals home. Since I couldn't give a home, at least I know they're in a safe place for the meantime.

I really enjoyed going to this spot, i got my cat neutered there for only $5 which is a super great price, the only thing is you have to call to make an appointment and they call you like 3 weeks later, which is understandable, like i said the price is super cheap. They also have such cute animals there and they let you pet them. The price for adopted an animal isn't cheap but still a hella lot cheaper then getting a new one.
I was on hold with the automatic system for like 15 minutes. WTH? Anyone in the office today?
Not only did it suck waiting on the phone but the background music nearly put my ass to sleep (speaker phone style).
All I needed to accomplish was updating my dog's current address and confirm that you received all her paperwork and license information.
Two stars. I'll update my review when I find the need to visit the care center in person. Today, this will be for the customer service over the phone.
Notes:
Three year license is now $39.00 for dogs (provided that your dog is spayed or neutered).

i had such a GREAT experience here today! My son and I have been looking for a cat for some time, and have visited many "pet fairs." The adoption agencies at these fairs were always nice, and mean well, but the whole process would turn me off.
so we decided to check out the shelter in san jose. This place is C-L-E-A-N. It does not smell like wet dogs or poop.
The people behind the desk were so nice, and the person who helped us with finding the right cat was so patient, and gave us lots of helpful information.
We were able to play with the cat and pay a small fee of $75--which included all the required health things (being fixed, vaccinations etc) microchip, collar, and a bag of food.
It was a great experience overall.
What better way to ring in my 200th review than by reviewing the place where we got our kitty Cash (check my profile pics for pictures of my Cash).
This place is great. Why?
1. Super clean (compared to all the other ones we visited while trying to find a new pet, ie. PA shelter, Berkeley shelter, Santa Clara shelter)
2. Feels more like a pet store than a shelter
3. Fast/easy adoption, about $75 to adopt a cat.
4. Easy updated website where you can see pictures and read profiles of other animals they have http://www.sanjoseanim...
We adopted Cash, that was his name the shelter gave him, in May of 06. He's the mostly lovable, friendly, lap kitty ever. He feels like a rabbit! He came potty-trained and fixed, and I've taught him several tricks since then. He knows how to sit, come, roll-over, give high fives, shake paws, and fetch (I swear!)! (Yes, I really wanted a dog, but couldn't get one b/c of space issues). I used to HATE cats and think they were gross, but this shelter helped me find a new appreciation and understanding for felines! Yay!

On a detour route home today from Target at The Plant I motioned to the husband to stop by the humane society to check out their facilities and look at the dogs. We're not currently in the market for a new pet at the moment but my husband insists that in 2 years he'll be looking into adding a dog to the family.
In the past we've adopted dogs at Santa Clara's Humane Society and in comparison to that facility this center must be a 4 star hotel. Majority of the facility is indoors and each of the pets' pens have clean crisp painted cement floors. There were tons of volunteers around walking pets around and literally cleaning crap off the floor. I saw one worker on her hands and knees picking up shit with gloves. Goodness...what people do for animals. The boy was a bit nervous about entering each of the rooms with the dogs especially when a few of them barked hysterically. He loved the rabbits. Surprisingly the husband saw a few dogs that he was interested in and would be willing to adopt. He's been so persistent about buying a dog and having the freedom to breed it or not.
It's great how this facility does a lot to tell you about each dog's personality and how they make sure that your taking the right pet home. They have many individual rooms to test out pets on families.
We won't be adopting any dogs soon but when the times comes it's nice knowing that San Jose Animal Care Center is an option to consider.

Once I can get past the emotional "ack" of seeing so many animals needing homes (even just those you can see from the front lobby is overwhelming, let alone how many more are in the back) ... I have to say this is a lovely facility. Lots of windows, very clean, bright and cheerful overall.
Since I volunteer with a rescue, I get to see areas of the back that a normal adopter wouldn't see, and it is always clean and tidy in the back areas too - so it's not just the lobby that's well maintained.
My only two negatives are that it's not a no-kill shelter and they have no dedicated rooms for non-typical pets - just a single small room for all non-typical pets. So when they get in anything that's not a bunny, cat, or dog it goes into a single small room that has roosters crowing, lizards, snakes, parrots, and assorted others. This means that every little budgie may be in a room with potential predators, that any other animal can be (and often is) traumatized by roosters crowing non-stop (and trust me, it's LOUD in there). It would be nice to see them put aside rooms for poultry, lizards, wildlife, and non-poultry birds. (That said, I believe there IS a plan in the works to have a separate room for parrots and other non-poultry birds that come in.)

3 cheers for clean animal shelters that find happy homes for sad homeless animals! It gets really busy here, but I say deal with it--it's a City owned animal shelter and it's not like you're paying for quality customer service (you should be there to become a responsible pet owner and do a service to your community by adopting a homeless animal). In any case, the staff have always been very friendly to me and more importantly they take good care of the animals.

UPDATE: I reported an animal abuse case and was put on hold for half an hour. That needs major work...but once connected I was able to complete my report and the offender was inspected the day of. Quick action for a long wait is reasonable.
I must say, compared to the Santa Clara County Humane Society, this place rocks. It's clean, spacious and organized.
The staff here are friendly and knowledgeable. The volunteers honestly do this from the heart. They even offered to stay connected just in case I needed advice or help with my two newly adopted rabbits.
I literally stayed here for 5 hours looking for the right one, and also talking to the wonderful people here.
Another plus, since it is run by the city, the fees for adoption are a lot cheaper. $20 per rabbit!!! Yay!!! I will have a house full of them soon. Also they are neutered, micro chipped and given a behavior evaluation.

This is really a new and clean facility. I adopted my Pekingese puppy from there, and haven't regretted it yet. My brother is an animal control officer here too, so I have been able to explore the facility from the back end and it is as clean and safe as the visitors front.

First... this is one of the cleanest, nicest animal shelters I've been to. I haven't seen the area where the cats are, but if it's anything like the dog area then those are some happy cats (as happy as they can be being in cages). There are different rooms - each with about 6 or 7 partitions. Each area looks well taken care of and the animals seem to be happy. This location definitely makes it seem more like a pet store than a shelter which helps when you're looking for a pet. Haven't found the right dog here either, but we'll keep coming back until we do.

It's clean and nice here, but the lady was rude and unfriendly. She also asked some crazy ass questions.

For the short time that I volunteered here I had a fun time. The dogs I socialized with were friendly and easy to get along with, and most of the cats were well behaved. However, that being said, the cats were sometimes the most frustrating animals to work with. When my friend and I played with cats that hadn't been handled for a while some of them would be crazy aggressive and swipe at us or they would hide in the cupboards. Getting a cat out of a cupboard is the hardest thing ever. My friend and I would spend minutes trying to lure the cat out, and in the end each time ended with us being able to put the cats back in their cages.
You would think with the bad rep big dogs get for being aggressive my friend and I would have been torn up into shreds, but the dogs here were very well behaved. In-fact sometimes it was the reverse where the smaller dogs would be more aggressive than the bigger ones. It's kind of sad that some of the dogs have been there for some time, but no one adopted them. Same goes for the cats I don't see why some of them were never adopted, but I guess some people just don't want an older pet.
All in all the volunteer work I did at this place was great, the animals were great and the people that worked here were friendly and really helpful. The only reason this place gets deducted one star is because of a dog named Handsome...he knows what he did...

What a beautiful facility! I got my dog here, and when I was talking to the volunteer I started to describe which dog I was interested in and she immediately knew not only which dog I was talking about, but could describe his personality to me. It really made me feel like they take personal care of each dog there, and he was certainly enthused to see her when she got him out so I could meet him.
The building is well laid out and very specious. The staff are friendly and helpful, and (most importantly) the animals are well cared for.
