My friend once complained about a massage that was too painful. I told her that I like painful massages. She said, "But this was really painful. This was the most pain I have ever been in that didn't end with me being injured." I shrugged to myself and secretly thought she was a giant wuss.
Well, now that I have been treated by Dan Carr, I have to eat my words (or thoughts) because I never had any idea that massage could be this painful, or this effective. Dan finds the tenderest pressure points and attacks them mercilessly until your muscle cramps surrender and give up (disclaimer: this may not be a scientifically accurate description of whatever painful and brilliant thing Dan is doing. My eyes are usually closed, at any rate). I spend most of my sessions doing deep breathing and trying not to cry, and I always feel incredible afterwards, usually for at least a few days. I started seeing Dan for back pain and sciatica, and after five treatments it was pretty much healed (my hobbies tend to keep it a bit injured, but that's my own fault). I'll continue to see him for maintenance work, since I can tell how excellent this bodywork is for my health. -

I have been dealing with a condition they call "Fibromyalgia" in addition to low back pain for over 10 years. I have extreme spasms all over my body and have been in and out of all types of therapy including physical therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, and many other types of massage. Any time I use my muscles, even if just a light walk, they tighten up and eventually get to the point of me not having the ability to walk for a period of time.
Daniel Carr has been working with me for the past couple months and the relief I have experienced had been unbelievable. His intuitive abilities are excellent and he knows exactly what areas to address. In addition to his superior body work, he is very flexible with scheduling and stays in contact just to touch in and see how things are going, whether I have an appointment or not.
I highly recommended Daniel Carr if you are dealing with any type of pain whether chronic or simply from an injury. As others may have mentioned, Thai massage can be very painful. Dan will work with your tolerance level however this is not a surface massage; this is real bodywork for people who want real results. -

Due to my involvement with martial arts, I am always looking for top notch body workers. Daniel Carr is top notch. He has an extensive background in sports, martial arts & yoga. I have also been to his seminars on how to give Thai massage and I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in bodywork. He spent over 6 months training in Thailand in Thai Massage with blind massage masters in Bangkok and trained at the Northern Old Medicine Hospital.
It is really hard to find good, legit Thai Massage in the Bay Area... look no further.. -

Seven years ago, I was involved in a bad car accident. My injuries concentrated on my neck & shoulder area; they left me unable to sit upright without nausea and severe pain for more than 45 minutes. After 3 months, my life began to improve, however, I was unable to address the scar tissue effectively. The scar tissue knotted up my muscles and eventually instead of healing through regular, deep tissue massage and acupuncture, I merely learned to work around an increasing immobility. About a year after my accident, I woke up with bells palsy (partial facial paralysis). This left deep psychological scars and severely modified my dance performing career. From running my own avant garde dance company, I began to dance in the background of companies with large numbers of dancers blending in together.
Then I discovered Daniel Carr last summer, I thought that I'd just get an interesting massage. (Thai yoga massage? What's that?) As soon as he reached my neck and shoulder, he immediately pinpointed the scar tissue and asked me about the details as he began to unravel the knots. He clearly stated that scar tissue work would require several sessions to address the area. The sessions were not relaxing, however, I was experiencing great results. My facial paralysis decreased and I regained more mobility and function in my upper body again. Recently, this spring, I realized that I was comfortable enough with my remaining facial paralysis to perform again as a soloist and even in front of the camera. I just get regular Thai yoga massage tune-ups and keep going. It's so nice to have a significant part of my life back. 04-11-07

05-23-07. Got worked over again by the Massage Master of San Francisco, Mr. Daniel Carr himself. Right shoulder was on fire & in pain from my right shoulder blade/spine area down my right tricep & right forearm. Ugh. Was in the middle of an INTENSIVE GYROTONIC course and was VERY, VERY happy and VERY, VERY sore! Needless to say, Carr got my groove back, though I must underscore that he is not for the faint-of-heart. It REALLY helps to do something physically extreme knowing that there's a healer that can help me keep going -- like the pit crew in a car race. -

I've never experienced anything that comes close to my sessions with Daniel. His commitment to healing my very stubborn sciatica and hip pain is truly beyond compare. I've never worked with anyone who has as much integrity, dedication and skill - and amazing intuition. I've referred him to four very dear people in my life and they all continue to see him, as do I, for injuries that couldn't be solved using other methods. He really takes the time to understand what is going on with you, each time you see him, so he can determine the best treatment for you. And yes, it can be extremely painful - it helps to have a tennis ball to squeeze and engage Daniel in some conversation so laughter will help take your mind off it! I really appreciate Daniel for helping me let go of my addiction to exercise that really wasn't serving me at all - I feel lighter and more free for knowing him.

Six years ago I was rear-ended while sitting in traffic. Five months later it happened again. Since then, I have seen four chiropractors, three physical therapists, an acupuncturist and seven massage therapists. Much of that helped to a point, but there I was stuck.
For six years I haven't been able to make it through a yoga or ballet class without weeks of severe pain. I haven't been able to walk more than a couple of blocks without days of pain. I met with an orthopedic surgeon who suggested cortisone shots and surgery, but gave both a no better than 50% chance of helping, and almost no chance of returning me to a pre-accident state.
I'd just about accepted that I would never improve, when I met Daniel Carr. After only four sessions, I was able to participate in an intense muscle conditioning class with only a couple of days of "good" soreness afterward. I can hardly believe it, but my old body is coming back.
Daniel's treatments are emphatically not "salon massage". They can hurt like hell. But every minute is worth it.
Last week I threw out my horrid chiropractic pillow in favor of a real pillow, and soon I'll put on my ballet slippers again!
UPDATE: Yesterday I had a muscle spasm that kicked my ass. I was nauseous and unable to turn my head. Daniel came to my rescue once again - I feel amazing. -

Daniel's talents for healing people dealing with chronic pain is incredible! I have been suffering with chronic back pain for many years. It really affected my quality of life on a daily basis. After 6 sessions, my back is almost completely pain free. Any occasional spasm quickly disappears unlike previous bouts that would linger. I personally know 6 other friends or relatives that have been to Daniel and received the same incredible help that treated everything from joint pain to back pain to muscle pain. All of these people had been to doctor's, orthopedic doctor's and received medication and physical therapy with no real lasting cure. Daniel's uniquely developed massage techniques are not your typical "spa" massage. It is painful but the resulting freedom from chronic pain is worth every minute of discomfort you may have to endure. His ability to uncover your specific pain problems is unbelievable and his ability to determine what specific course of treatment to administer is truly great! The "icing on the cake" in dealing with Daniel is his great personality that immediately puts you at ease and makes you wish you had him as a personal friend. You feel so comfortable and trusting of him that the healing process is that much more effective. If you have chronic pain issues, "run, do not walk" to Daniel's office and seek his help.
