Work full-time? Super busy? Tight budget? This is the place to get your feet wet in the world of body work. The Swedish on-going program lets you drop in for classes whenever you have time. You can finish classes in 2 months or a few years, whatever works for you. I went twice a week and it took me about 4 months to finish.
The teachers are seasoned professionals and the students are focused. And the price? You won't find a better value in the Bay Area plus they break up the payments. They offer a free class if you want to get a feel for it.
They offer a couple foundation courses and several specialty classes. However, after a couple thousand dollars with a foundation class, I still didn't have enough hrs or qualifications to find work outside of SF. Then during 2 classes I was injured, in the same spot, same day, by 2 different students and now live with constant numbness in an arm & lower neck. Regret I ever attended but all the best to those that do.
I have just completed a course in Swedish Massage. I chose the "intensive" program which is 12 consecutive days (they also offer convenient ongoing programs to suit a busy schedule). I had three OUTSTANDING teachers (different teacher on different days) which was beneficial for me to have exposure to experienced instructors who "do as they teach" with different styles and specialty emphasis. The curriculum was challenging but not impossible.
I walked in thinking I would learn how to give a great professional massage to work in concert with the other healing modalities I practice. While I received that, I learned a lot about myself that I could never learn by simply reading a book. Speaking of books (from a book lover) there are several instructors on staff who are published writers on various massage modalities - wow! I plan to continue my relationship with the San Francisco School of Massage in the immediate future for workshops to build my hours and skills. I HIGHLY recommend!!
My experience at this school has inspired me greatly and encouraged more growth in my repertoire as a wellness practitioner. I wish the same positive outcome to anyone who is pursuing a career in massage therapy.
I'm a current student of the Swedish Massage program.
The best part about the program is the flexibility. They offer both day and evening classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays so you don't have to quit your job. You can take as many classes each week as your schedule allows, or take a one week break if something unexpected happens.
And kudos for offering a 102-hour intro class, with a 103 hour intermediate & 201-hour advanced course (all for the "Western" focused program. A separate Eastern program is also offered in a similar format). An upfront 1 year, $13,000 commitment is not for everyone (which is what one of the other nearby schools requested during their high pressure tour/orientation).
The instructors are very knowledgeable, and you can take certain classes with different instructors to benefit from their varied backgrounds and teaching styles.
Convenient location in Cow Hollow (Chestnut just off of Van Ness).
Only complaint: no Saturday class options. But then again they have continuing education courses/workshops so it's understandable.
One of only a couple of schools in the Bay Area where I could find a decent selection of CEUs. I was very impressed with the level of instruction and the skill level of the students in the advanced workshop I took here. The instructor's structural and neurological understanding of the body was outstanding (he's not only also a CMT, but a Chiropractor) and he was able to convey information clearly and concisely, which allowed us plenty of hands-on time.
The students asked questions that I found applicable to real-life situations, and were challenging. I would definitely recommend taking classes here if you are seeking Professional Massage Training or just looking to beef up your existing skills. .
graduate of this place.
good things includes:
100 hour intro packages. personally I am not a huge fan of 500 hour commitment, it's a lot really.
flexibility, in any school this is huge, the swedish program allows you to drop in and work around your own schedule which I think is brilliant.
great instructors, good location and generally a good selection of post 100 hour class. I highly recommend this place as a good place to learn some solid skills and venture into the world of bodywork.
Coming from a family that stresses quality education and inspirational teachers, I found SFSM to be a wonderful place to learn. I plan to come back for more training, and I am proud to echo all the great comments from the others.
