Wonderful experience from start to finish. Dr. Andrea Zengion is extremely caring, attentive and kind. I had a few medical issues that had been persisting for several months. After a thorough consultation and email correspondence a simple to follow and affordable treatment plan was given and I was feeling much better shortly after. Highly recommended!!

Making my first appointment with Andrea Zengion was one of the best decisions I've made in my life.
When I walked in the doors of SF Natural Medicine, I had chronic monthly migraines for which my doctor had prescribed Maxalt (didn't work) and the Relpax (did work, but horrid side effects) and was recommending I see a neurologist. I had also been seeing an allergist for several years, getting weekly allergy shots, and my allergist was recommending a THIRD allergy medication for my environmental allergies which were leaving me worn out and listless. I was in chronic pain and had no energy by the time I sat down with Dr. Zengion in November.
Five months later, I'm migraine free and my allergies aren't bothering me at all even though I'm not taking any medication at this point.
At our first session, Dr. Zengion spent a lot of time listening to me talk about what was going on with my health. The first question she asked was a bulls-eye that nailed the source of my health issues. We talked some more and then I had my first acupuncture session. I walked out of the office that day feeling so much better and saw a reduction in the severity of my migraines almost immediately.
Over the past five months, I've found Dr. Zengion to be incredibly intuitive with my care - everything she's done has been right on target and, when I told her today that I felt like I was finally getting back to the person I was before the migraines got so bad, she was as thrilled as I was. She listens to what you're saying (and sometimes what you're not), asks insightful questions, and has a great sense of humor. As I said, going to Dr. Zengion is absolutely one of the best decisions I've made in my life. -

After a year of seeing doctors, my teenage daughter was diagnosed with IBS. We were left with "You have IBS, take Miralax daily and oh, there is a medication your daughter can take but it's off the market, only available in Mexico and Canada". I don't think so! Thanks to my love of Integrative Medicine, I knew that I needed to search elsewhere for my daughter. I had heard of Amy Day through other patients (I work at a local medical center) and I have walked by SF Natural Medicine a few times.
I called to make an appointment for my daughter and was greeted by Havannah (sp?). Havannah was super professional, friendly and understanding. I also scheduled an over the phone consult with Dr. Day for myself being perimenopausal with hormone issues I wish to resolve. I found Dr. Day to be knowledgeable, friendly and encouraging. From the get go, I knew she sincerely wanted to partner with her patients to truly get to the root issues and not just apply a bandage over the problem.
My daughter's appointment with Dr. Day was fabulous. She went through every single symptom my daughter experienced, stress level and diet. My daughter left the appointment with a smile on her face and most of all, with HOPE. Even Havannah commented on her smile. My daughter truly felt that Dr. Day was her partner in health, not just a "doctor". THIS IS THE WAY MEDICAL CARE SHOULD BE! Though the visit is not covered by my insurance, I found the money well worth the consultation. I am eagerly looking forward to MY appointment with Dr. Day.
I HIGHLY recommend SF Natural Medicine! -

I highly recommend Dr. Day. For twenty years I had been suffering with horrible endometriosis pain for 2 to 3 days each month. I was in so much pain that I could not function. Now, after going on Dr. Day's treatment plan, my endometriosis pain has been reduced by 80%-90%. This is the third month of having hardly any pain, and I'm still in disbelief. The horrible pain is gone. I have been able to go places and have guests over on the day of my period. This would have been so impossible for me before! I'm so thankful that God lead me to Dr. Day!
She has also helped teach me about eating correctly and taking the correct supplements. I always ask her lots of questions, and she's always so helpful. Also, after following Dr. Day's treatment plan, I was able to get pregnant naturally, which I had previously been unable to do.
I actually live 2 hours away from San Francisco and so my appointments with Dr. Day are over the phone, which I absolutely love! It's so nice to be able to just pick up the phone and have a nice long talk with her from my house. I don't need to go anywhere.
Dr. Day is great, and I really encourage anyone who is having problems to go see her. -

I'm so glad I finally found an amazing natural doctor in SF. Andrea Zengion is really friendly and seems to have a really good head on her shoulders. I felt I could trust her opinions and I also felt like she really cared about my health and getting me the natural treatment I need! Everyone else that works there is also friendly upon walking in, there are plenty of good magazines to read and they also offer hot tea and water. Plus it's a cute little place in a cute neighborhood.

I've been seeing Dr. Hangee-Bauer since 2001 for my SLE (lupus). I had just been diagnosed after a three month hospital stay at UCSF, including 19 days in the ICU after cardiac arrest and renal failure. I was deathly ill with multiple organ involvement (spleen, heart, lung, bone marrow, kidneys, joints, skin) and things weren't looking all that great.
When I got home, I decided to incorporate TCM/acupuncture instead of using classical homeopathy because I was on a lot of immunosuppressive medications and was looking for complementary alternative treatments. I decided to see an ND because Naturopathic Doctors have the necessary medical training to understand/interpret all the medical tests and treatments I was going through at the time.
Over the years, Carl has treated me during periods of remission and flares - always with the utmost level of professionalism, skill and caring. I absolutely credit how well I'm doing to my regular (usually every 2-3 weeks) treatments. Carl has worked hard to help me keep my SLE under control, so that hospital stays and ER visits are now rare occurrences *touch wood*. I was heading for dialysis when I first started seeing Dr. Hangee-Bauer, but my renal function has remained stable since seeing him, and I feel this is largely due to the regular acupuncture, herbs and supplements I've received.
UCSF saved my life in a real crisis, but Dr. Hangee-Bauer has made living with a chronic disease on a daily basis much more manageable/tolerable, and helped me to stay largely clear of those crisis situations.
He's also treated me for other things, unrelated to my SLE - such a whiplash from a car accident I was in last year and other acute health ailments. I always feel better after seeing him, no matter what is going on with me at the time, and feel my recovery times are much improved with his recommended treatments and suggestions.
Once I saw Amy Day while Carl was out of town and she was really great, too. She's so kind and I felt like she had spent time to understand my case, and make sure treatment was tailored specifically to me while keeping up with what Dr. Hangee-Bauer had been doing at the time for me.
The office manager, Michele, has become a friend (same with their dog, Halle - who I just adore!) and has always handled any insurance or billing questions I have had over the years, when needed. The entire staff is wonderful and super professional. The offices are always clean, quiet and comfortable. I honestly can't say enough good things about Dr. Hangee-Bauer and San Francisco Natural Medicine!
Thank you!!! -

I have had reproductive/cycle issues for a long time, that has affected me physically and mentally. I've always felt like something wasn't quite right. And each time I went to see my gyno., it was always a routine exam and lab to check things out. And when things came back within "normal range", my issues were always excused. But really, how could my gyno. understand my problems, if I told him I felt like "things weren't quite right", being that my lab tests yielded no threatening results .
This year, I took the initiative to seek alternative medicine and came across Dr. Erica Horowitz. She listened to my problems and offered solutions and alternatives on how to tackle them.
I can't believe that I can now say, thanks to Dr. Horowitz, what once plagued my life, has and is now going away. I feel more alive and like a new woman! All thanks to Dr. Horowitz for her expertise and care. :-) -

This review is for Dr. Horowitz who I began to see a little under 3 months ago when I grew tired of banging my head against the blind ignorance and condescension of one MD after another.
Finding Dr. Horowitz was the sighting of light at the end of a very long tunnel. I'm only 3 months into my healing (adrenal and thyroid), so I'm not all better, but I am doing better at the end of these 3 months than 5 years of searching for help from MD's ever got me.
Dr Horowitz is the epitome of kind and compassionate. She listens to you, answers your questions, as many as you have no matter how stupid, and NEVER speaks down to you. Dr. Horowitz explains herself as being a partner in your healing and I can testify that she takes that role seriously. She empowers her clients to reach towards health.
The one downside, insurance sucks and most won't cover this. It is pricey. Personally, I feel that getting healthy is worth the cost. -

I've been seeing Dr. Hangee-Bauer for 7 years. He primarily treats me for Crohn's Disease (an inflammatory bowel disease), but he's also helped me with injuries from a car accident and symptoms from stress & grief. He's a lifesaver! Whenever I have a flare up from Crohn's, I go running to him for herbs and acupuncture. Immediately after an acupuncture appointment, I feel great and my symptoms subside. He's been instrumental in getting me back to great health time & time again. I highly recommend him.
If you're not sure about seeing an ND, I urge you to call him to see if he treats your condition and if you agree with his treatment. He's genuinely a nice guy, a great doctor with the best bedside manners I've ever experienced, calm & knowledgeable and he truly cares about helping people. If he's not the right person for you, I'm sure he'll refer you out.
The office is located in Potrero Hill. Great, super easy parking! The whole staff is friendly. His wife works there, and their dog is often there, making it a family business. It's a "feel good" place.
I hope you get the care you need. -

I continue on my healing journey with Dr. Amy Day. Here is an update: For a while I had a lot of problems with my monthly cycle. And even though I never got officially diagnosed with endometriosis it was mentioned as something that I might have. I was very scared that I would never find remedy for the pain and the killer mood swings. But for the second month in a row my beautiful cycle has been manageable. I am starting to see my cramps diminish and the flow lessen as well. In this I am starting to pay a lot more attention to my body as the body has its own innate intelligence. The level of encouragement from Amy has helped as well. She has such a passion and compassion to help you with what ever is going on in your life. I know I still have some things to deal with and work through, but Amy has been great support in my quest to heal. Thanks Amy!

I tried SF Natural Medicine after years of substandard and ineffective treatment for chronic GI issues from HMOs. I wanted a doctor who would actually listen to me for more than 5 minutes and remember me on my next visit, and I got that and much more with Andrea Zengion. My first appointment with her lasted over an hour and involved a detailed medical history, including questions that other doctors had never thought to ask, and my first ever acupuncture. I had never left a doctor's appointment feeling so gratified and hopeful. Over the next few months Dr. Zengion worked with me to completely remedy one of my chronic issues and substantially improve another. She is thoughtful, bright, and caring. It was refreshing to feel that I was being treated as a whole individual and not just an esophagus, for example. With her help my quality of life improved substantially. I am a scientist and would not have considered myself the type to seek alternative medicine but am so grateful I found this clinic and will continue to see naturopathic doctors.

I have been working with Dr. Andrea Zengion, N.D., L.Ac. for 3 weeks because I got a horrible upper respiratory tract infection. She is kind, caring and a great practitioner. I began feeling much better within 24 hours of my first treatment (and that was after being sick for a full week). She follows up when she says she will and all the people at that office have been very professional, warm, friendly and kind.

Who knew? I've got a flare up of a horribly painful auto-immune disease that no one can figure out the source of yet. Dr. Carl Hangee-Bauer gave me an acupuncture treatment that REALLY helped! Didn't get rid of it, but gave me my day back. The lessened pain and increased ease of movement was more than I dared hope for! Yeah! Thank you, Carl. I'll be back.

I went for my first assessment appointment yesterday with Dr. Erika Horowitz. I arrived at the clinic a few minutes late due to parking issues. There was no parking on 20th so I had to turn the corner into a residential area with a long street of potential parking spots. I didn't have to walk far so I'm not complaining! Plus, it was a beautiful day.
I got to the clinic, checked in and took a seat. They have some great natural based magazines and reading hand outs in the waiting room. I was greeted by a tall, fit, lovely blonde woman: my new ND, Dr. Erika Horowitz. She was very friendly. I could tell she obviously cares about her health and takes good care of it. This is key. Who wants to put trust in a doctor who obvsiously isn't putting effort into their own health while guiding other's health? Anyhow, she led me to a room and we started our assessment of my health history.
I liked Dr. Horowitz's personality from the get go. She is like a sweet potatoe with sprinkles of seriousness mixed with a bunch of brain butter. Okay getting creative here, I'm saying she is sweet, serious and highly educated. I was VERY IMPRESSED. She won best doctor of the Bay Area. I can see why, no questions or doubts in my mind. A super bonus for her having history working with transgender people. It made explaining my situation a breeze and very non-triggering for me. AMEN. A double bonus for being so educated on the digestive tract, upper and lower. It made explaining a very dibilitating and devestating disability even easier.
Erika listened very well. I was extremely open about my health conditions. She understood everything and offered great, supportive and intelligent minded feedback. We spent almost 2 hours together discussing everything. By the end of the session I got exactly what I had hoped for: a new loving and caring doctor to put my trust into & help guide me through my fight to recover and restore health, as well as a treatment plan for IV nutritional therapy and natural based brain boosting supplements. I asked to see the room where I will be getting my new weekly IVs and loved the little set up. There's a comfy recliner chair, Hawaiian decor (Hawaii and the word ALOHA are very sentimental to me right now and a code word for motivation in my recovery...so this was like straight confirmation from God. Plus, Dr. Horowitz is from Hawaii - my new Aloha Angel!!!)... and there's a stereo, reading supplies and overall relaxed living room style setting. They even have net access in there to bring your laptop while getting IV treatment! I think that's so neat, especially since I will be in the room for 2 hours at a time.
I was given hand outs to read and a kit to take home for neurotransmitter testing. The girl at the front desk, Slyvie, is as cute as a cupcake - America's Next Top Model style - and explained the testing kit to me and took my first appointment payment. My appointmet fee was $265 total, pretty common rate for a naturopathic assessment. I paid via check but they also take credit cards. I was told my primary insurance, Medical, will cover the fee of the brain chemical testing and was given a copy of my insurance card to mail with my sample tests.
I arrived a little after 12:30 noon and left just shortly before 3pm. I left with hope in my heart blossoming like the first beautiful flower in spring. I am very confident in my decision to start treatment at SF Medical Center and continue seeing Dr. Horowitz as my naturopathic doctor. I highly recommend this clinic and Dr. Horowitz to anyone who is serious about taking care of their health the correct way - the natural way! Why settle for less when you deserve the best? This clinic offers a smorgsboard of special services to support natural health and healing.
Ps. I got a little confused driving here from 280 South. The best way to get here from 280 South is to exit on San Jose Ave. then make a right on 17th (not 20th it won't go through, 17th does) and follow it ALL the way down to the Potero Hill area... pass Whole Foods... keep going straight and you will see a park...make a right on Arkansas and follow it up a few blocks till you see 20th street... make a left on 20th Street and SF Natural Medicine is 2 businesses up from the stop sign. It's located next to a convience store. You will have to option to turn right for residental parking or turn left on a downhill slope for addtional residental parking. Your best bet is to turn right at the stop sign if there isn't parking in front of the clinic. Turning right at the stop sign will guide you to a long strip of street with many potential parking spots on flat ground.
Here is to health and wellness! Goodluck everyone! Ps. Try their Hawaiin lotion in the lobby. It's too die for, a gem of it's kind and really keeps you moisturized in a non greasy/lube style way. It has a delicate sweet scent and all natural ingredients! I lathered my hands and arms and din't feel intoxicated from heavy perfume -

Amy Day has helped me with every problem I have ever come to her with-hot flashes, migraines, stomach problems, chronic fatigue and chronic pain. She is resourceful, smart, sweet, patient, a great listener, accessible and caring. She is my first place to turn when I need medical help now. I have found the office well run and have not had any problems at all in making appointments or getting my supplements or tinctures. The whole experience is always a pleasure.

I've been seeing Amy, and she's great (reviewed separately). The staff at the front desk are friendly and helpful. And they have Calvin and Hobbes for you to read if you arrive early for your appointment. I highly recommend Amy, she could not be more supportive. I felt very well looked after during a time when I needed more attention than I could have gotten with a traditional doctor. We also resolved my issues quickly. The office and staff are lovely, if you are looking to try an ND this is a great place to start.

I have been working with Erika Horowtitz for about a year now. I had requested a phone interview first (something virtually no "traditional" doctor would ever do). She was fabulous! I asked a fair amount of questions and of course her anwers were great. Since then, she has be extremely caring, focusing and diligent. She will spend as long with you as you need. She believes (as do I) in labs - and the labs they use are the best I've seen. It's not cheap, but if you want to actually SOLVE your health problems, there's no better answer (and trust me, I've been to many doctors in the bay area for about 10 years trying to solve my problem).

If you are seeking ways to improve your level of wellness, then this is the place for you. I came in to see Dr. Carl Hangee-Bauer for very disturbing stress-related symptoms. Within a very short period of time, I started feeling so much better! I feel like I have my life back again. I am so grateful for the services offered at SF Natural Medicine, as well as the kind and compassionate approach to care. I am a nurse who truly believes in the care offered by ND's.
I recently joined the group "New Year/New You with Dr. Amy Day. I wanted to lose weight in a healthy way. I did a liver cleanse for 3 weeks. I am losing weight, but I have received so much more in the process! The program is so comprehensive and supportive. Again I feel a much greater sense of energy in my life. I am more productive; I have the energy to exercise; I understand how different foods affect my body and mind. I feel youthful again! This is where I will continue to go for my health care needs. -

I highly recommend Dr. Day. I went to her with low energy, complete burn-out and I was not sleeping well at all. Dr. Day spent a lot of time talking through my symptoms, diet and habits. Then we ran some tests to see what was going on and she helped me with nutritional supplements that have made a world of difference. I am sleeping well, have much better energy and am generally in a better mood. Dr. Day is a great ND, is compassionate and gets right to the source of your health issues! I also did my first cleanse with Dr. Day and it was a great experience!

I highly recommend SF Natural Medicine! After months of countless doctor visits, frustrating and ultimately, inconclusive testing at UCSF, I decided to take my health issues elsewhere.
I found SFNM through google and knew I was on the right path when I called and was greeted warmly by Havana, the receptionist. She set up a free 15 minute phone consult between Dr Amy Day (who specializes in women's health issues) and me. Well, that was all the convincing I needed to schedule my first appointment.
During that first appointment, Dr Day took a full history of my health and calmly reassured me that she would be able to help me with my "issue". I felt relieved immediately and knew I was in good hands.
The test she ran was thorough and gave us the information we needed so that I could be treated quickly and effectively. 3 months later, I am happy to say, that I am healthy.
If you're tired of getting the run around from your traditional MD, go see the docs at SF Natural Medicine! -

Dr. Amy Day is a goddess! I decided to go check this place out after being fed up with 15 minute doctor's appointments that never seemed to provide relief for what was ailing me. On my first appointment, Dr. Day spent nearly 2 hours with me--the goal of Naturopathic medicine is to treat the whole person and causes of ailments--not just provide band-aid treatments to the symptoms. Dr. Day gave me the greatest pap ever--not painful at all, but very educational at the same time. I highly recommend this practice and Dr. Amy Day : )

Montara, CA
Dr. Erika Horowitz is a truly amazing practitioner. I suffered from insomnia, general fatigue, and a seemingly downward spiral of health issues for seven months. I tried a wide variety of prescription drugs, herbs, and relaxation techniques but nothing seemed to work. My MD only made things worse by implying that my problems were "all in my head" and making me overly dependent on harmful drugs such as Xanax and Ambien. This all changed after my first appointment with Dr. Horowitz. She gave me a preliminary diagnosis of adrenal fatigue and helped to restore my severely depleted melotonin and serotonin levels with a combination of 5HTP and several other supplements. She also ordered a comprehensive review of my neurotransmitter levels using a state-of-the-art lab. After only six weeks, I started sleeping like a baby most nights and 90% of my symptoms have been resolved. I no longer take any prescription drugs and look about five years younger than I did when I first walked into SF Natural Medicine. I anticipate that their treatment will eventually rewind years of unhealthy behaviors and habits. The treatment isn't cheap by any stretch but you get what you pay for and it's much more effective and healthful than what you'll get from a conventional MD. Perhaps the best thing about SF Natural Medicine is the knowledge that many psychiatric issues such as depression, panic disorder, and anxiety are treatable with natural supplements rather than powerful and harmful mainstream prescriptions. Dr. Horowitz essentially "saved my life" and I enthusiastically recommend her program.

I've been going to Dr. Carl Hangee-Bauer for acupuncture and natural health care for three years now. He's helped me with breast pain, wrist pain, weird bumps in my calf, stress- the list goes on and on! Not only do I feel amazing after each acupuncture treatment, but I also appreciate that I never feel rushed, Dr. Carl is always focused and sincerely interested in my health and well being. A few months ago I had severe stomach pains. Not only did I receive helpful treatment, but Dr. Carl followed up with check-in phone calls. I feel that care like this is really rare these days and makes me appreciate it that much more. To add even more to the experience is Michelle, Dr. Carl's wife who handles all my insurance needs. She fights to make sure I get the coverage I deserve and when I don't she is writing letters and making countless phone calls making sure that I do. To sum up- I feel so cared for and am so grateful to have found such a wonderful place.

When you walk into SF Nat'l Med you get a sense of calm and "everything will be OK" right away. I have been seeing Dr. Carl Hangee-Bauer since December of 2005 for various ailments. I have used his acupuncture, traditional Chinese meds and his bio punctures. He helped me with a torn Achilles tendon that a traditional orthopedics doc could not help me with in 3 months. Additionally, he helped me with my bursits, stress relief after my mother died, and various other ailments including colitis. I would say that he REALLY LISTENS. There is none of this rush rush feeling that you get from MD's, there is a sense of calm, knowledge, rational ideas and a willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done. I cannot say enough good things about Dr Hangee Bauer. Also, if he thinks the ailment needs a traditional MD he says so, ie when I needed total knee replacement surgery. However, he worked with me first to get me in great medical shape so I could weather the surgery better. In addition, there is a new doc there who is working part time doing medical massage until her board results are in. Her name is Gayl and she is simply magical. She has been helping me with my sciatic pain and her touch is amazing. Obviously as a doc she is very aware of the body and its muscles and I keep saying I wish I could have a massage from her every day.. I cannot say enough good things about SF Natural Medicine. All of the people there are so nice, efficient, kind and caring. They should give lessons to other medical facilities. If you feel like you are getting the run around from tradtional docs and you are left waiting for hours in a waiting room, call them up for a consult. Also, there is abundant street parking and public transportation as well, always a big plus in SF.
