Smacked balls until the champagne ran out, and somehow ended up in the championship match. But my croquet partner and I had to pee so bad by then, we weren't bringing our A game. And the other team cheated. Did I mention the champagne running out?
Had a great time and Rules Guy/Coach/Rueben was awesome and didn't yell at us when we cheated/abused the mallets/ passed out.
Woo hoo croquet! Finally a sport I can come in second place at!

If you have not played croquet, you haven't lived. For my wife's birthday, we actually rented both fields and had a huge tournament for about 80 people. The staff was really accomodating and helped set up the draw, gave us some quick lessson and pointers, and then let us go for the gold.
It's a great and beautiful area, part of Stern Grove. It is right by a main road but you quickly forget. More for color, some of the hightlights of the party was renting a cable car bus to pick up everyone in Union Square and drive them over, guests were required to dress in Holly Golightly attire (whites, summer dresses, summer suits, straw hats), and we served champagne, Italian soda and fried chicken from Powell's.
My playing partner (who's wife iis Allisson K) and I lost to Wifey's Father and his partner in the finals, I still say it was fixed.

Who knew croquet could be so fun! It's like a sophisticated and strategic type of put-put : ) Had a great outing there recently... the fog broke and allowed the sun to shine down on our plaids and argyles, we sipped smokey scotch-esqe cocktails, and thoroughly enjoyed the legendary pastime. We had teams (we were "Wicket Good") and it got pretty competitive! A great way to spend a lazy afternoon outdoors.

My friend Jen (you know, the rock star?) has organized, what is certain to be, a great event here next month. I have played here once before in my "whites" and had a lovely time. This is a great place for both personal and corporate functions; the Club coordinates seamlessly with your caterer. FYI: the Club offers a free introductory class for non-members on the first Saturday and the first and third Sundays of the month.

Everyone is doing it...don't you want to fit in?

This is the height of my athleticism. Right here, baby. I am a man born to croquet. Can you use croquet as a verb? I don't know, but I'm going to anyway. I get to pretend I'm all high class and crap while I knock around some balls with a mallet. AND I'm drinking a beer. I barely broke a sweat. When this sport gets olympic recognition, I'll be the first to sign up. We kicked it here for our office outing and it was an excellent day. Reuben gave us a fantastic demonstration on proper jump shot technique. And I'll be dammed if my partner Bob G. didn't nearly pull it off on his first try. Honestly, the ball launched over his opponent's, vibrated in between the wicket for half a second before shooting out. It's a shot that will live in infamy at the Croquet Club...

I've only had one adventure at this club, but - 'boy, was it grand'! My husband's college roommate (Nish N.) pulled together an absolutely divine 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' par-te. We played a tournament and everyone had a great time...see his review for more intimate details. I would definitely come back...if I ever have the urge for a classic croquet battle!

I've never even considered playing croquet before, but now after playing I feel like I've been missing out on so much fun. A day of croquet makes for the perfect work outing or just something different to do with your friends. I would definitely come back if i lived in the area, but for now I'm on search for some croquet action in Chicago!

Reuben thanks for the superb lesson! I am now in love with croquet! Wearing white, drinking beer and hitting colored balls around all in the setting of a beautiful park--fun fun fun.
I did have a great partner and fabulous opponents to make the whole experience just lovely darlings!
