Funny stuff.  I think I spent more time laughing than breathing during my time there.

This is the best place to be in San Francisco on a Friday or Saturday night, hands down.

As others have said, it's cheap, it's BYO, and the comedians are great.  (Sure, some are more experienced than others, but this is the genuine article -- rest assured that at least one major name in comedy will come from here...)

As of this weekend (May 2, 2008), they've expanded and now have a huge room with plenty of seating for everyone.  Awesome!

This is my go-to for when out-of-town people are visiting me, and we always leave happy.

(And I'm not just saying this because I'm dating one of the comedians... Jealous?)

I must say that BYOB plus comedy equals certain greatness.  Add an intimate (close in proximity) environment, a central location, and solid comedians and you get a comedy club that has 5 stars all over it.

On another note, one of the comedians joked about suicide/suicide notes...I mean I know all topics are supposed to be fair game but some should really be considered off -limits.  Oh well, I guess I'm just sensitive to that one, just as others would be to politics, etc.

What a fun way to spend an evening! BYOB and standup are nothing short of a brilliant combination. Nothing turns me off of standup more than having to pay a big cover and then buy overpriced drinks from waiters that are blocking my view of the comedy during the show...
This place has neither of these things. Dirt cheap ($5, $10, depending on the night) and BYOB. There's certainly a range of talent, since it is after all an amateur establishment, but on the evening that I went nobody truly bombed and some of the performers were really very talented. Highly recommended for a night of inexpensive fun!

I had a friend in town and we wanted an affordable night out, thus I found this place on Yelp and had an AWESOME time. We grabbed Blondie's Pizza and brought two bottles of wine from 7-11 and were all set. Our friday night it was the Unladylike show and while you could tell some ladies were nervous, overall we left the place with our sides hurting from laughing so much.
Really appreciated the cups and bottle openers at the front, plus the cookies! I recommend buying tickets online for the convenience factor. Definitely a fun, BYOB night (next time we might bring more than a bottle each though!).

UPDATE: 4/22/08

Okay, I can't express how awesome this place is.  You guys must give it a try, if you haven't.  My second time around and I just discovered a comedian who has made it to my list of favorite stand ups: Joe Klocek.  This guy is brilliant.  He needs no material on stage, simply feeds off the energy of the audience, and is hilarious.  My cheeks were literally in pain from laughing too much on Friday night.

-------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------

This such an awesome Yelp find!  This place is great for locals, out-of-towners, and just about anyone who wants to have a couple hours of good laughs for only $10-12.  No $20+ admission or 2-drink minimum here.  You gotta love the BYOB!  They are even well-equipped with bottle openers, corkscrews, and plastic cups to accommodate your alcoholic thirst.  They have complimentary snacks at the front door too!  For about 2 straight hours, you are entertained by 7-8 comics.  They'll humiliate themselves, their loved ones, and of course, lucky members the audience.  Be sure to snag a seat in the back if you're afraid of being victimized.  The room seats about 60 people, and can get pretty stuffy during the show.  Saturday night shows are called Naked Comedy and feature newbies and experienced comedians alike.  My favorite comedian by far is Ali Mafi...I think he performs every weekend at SFCC.

I have absolutely no complaints about this place at all and will be recommending it to everyone I know.  The headlining comedian made a joke that  he really wanted a glass of 7&7 that someone in the audience was drinking but that if he took the drink, he would not get his $50 for the night.  When you think about it, let's say it was at maximum turnout for $12/person x 60 seats (=$720), $50 for the headliner and probably a smaller denomination for the newbies is such a meager salary for a starving artist.  So, come to SFCC to support up and coming artists and if you're looking for a really good time!

this is by far the best find EVER on yelp!  i only wish i knew about this in college when i was a broke ass.

for 10 bucks, you get to see 6-7 comics, plus it's BYOB (screw cobb's and their 2 drink minimum)!  the only thing that i can find wrong with this event is there is absolutely no ventilation and after about an hour you can smell and feel all the alcohol in the room, but it's really not that big of a deal.

i had my first SFCC experience this past friday and out of all the comics i saw, my favorite was the local and producer of the show, joe nguyen.  not only was he funny, but he was the one giving out the tickets in the beginning of the show and he handed me my tickets with a goofy smile on his face and said, "have a good time".   it was cute.

SFCC is definitely one of my go to places now.  i absolutely f*ckin' love it.

It's about time I write this review.

First off, let me say that there's a Yelper called Joe N. who can hook you up with free tickets.  (Helpful, I know.)

Second of all, the show is worth the $5-10 you should pay to support local, starving comedians.

The show was great.  Went to see the Friday night 9 pm show (Scantily Clad), and some of the comedians were pretty brutal on the audience.  It's a great, intimate setting, and a great time.

The only thing that jolted me a bit was that they run through a number of comedians in a short period of time.  I was starting to get into the groove of one, and time would run out.  Other than that though, the comedians (even the 13 year old), were great.

Awesome spot for a night of comedy on the cheap. Saturdays is Naked Comedy, showcasing a lineup of amateurs plus a headliner for a mere 12 bucks! Amateurs might be hit or miss but the headliners are spot on. Besides make up for bad jokes by bringing your own bar -awesome. No brown bagging here. Just a bunch of roughty strangers in a hot purple room. Knees, get ready to be slapped!

What do you get when you mix a bunch of strangers who bring in their own beers and wine by the box, the occasional heckler who'll call out but quickly be put back into his place by the comic on-stage, the smell of fear from the audience as the comic scours the room in hopes of finding the next contestant of "Please Make a Fool Out of Me" (obnoxious sorority types are easy targets), comedians from diverse backgrounds that are sometimes hit-or-miss but share a passion for comedy?  They call it Saturday night here.

I find that stand-up comedy speaks to me, not in a condescending talk-show host type of way, but it's a great way to relieve stress and I get a kick out of the spontaneous interaction between comic and audience--this venue is particularly intimate. The "oh-my-God-I-know-someone-like-that" moments, and the "oh-wow, I-can't-believe-she-just-said-that" moments and all the less-than-stellar material in between, I enjoy them all.

Just in case, reserve your tickets online the day of the show to ensure you get a seat!

Lotsa bang for  your buck at SFCC!  For your ten-quid investment (sometimes only $5 if you keep your eye on Goldstar Events), you are guaranteed an amusing, if not always uproarious time.

The talent level is generally mixed--some of the comedians are more polished (and probably experienced) than others, but I've always had a bunch of belly laughs every time I've gone; and even the more tentative comics get an A+ for effort.  Who in their right mind would open themselves up to that kind of self-immolation??  I have yet to encounter a performer so painfully unfunny that I felt compelled to force an uncomfortable laugh.  And let me assure you, that has happened at places where I shelled out a lot more than five smackers!

Go with a gaggle of friends, bring a bottle of wine, and have a ball!  If you're lucky, Melissa will bake you some brownies.

Here is what you need to know about this cool little comedy Shak...It's small which is coo because if you have bad hearing....you won't miss a good joke. There is no 2 drink minimum which is sweet because you wont be feeling broke after you leave this joint. You can bring your own booze which is awsome...stop by a local LQ store grab a 40 and your good to go. For the most part all the comics I saw were above average...and aren't afraid to pick you out of the group.
Speaking of that...if you do not wish to be picked on...DO NOT SIT IN THE FRONT ROW...the comics are know for picking on the front raw folks and giving them some some harmless shit. I know because I got  to experience it first hand.
Over all it is a great place and it's cheap for people like me.
And if you r in a dancing mood after there are is Ruby SKY and Slides directly next door to the Comedy Club.

It's $5 for the amateur show, and you can bring in your own drinks as long as you look 21.  I guess if you don't look 21 they check your ID.

Anyway, based on the reviews, we thought it would be packed, but in the whole room there were maybe 15 of us, and of that, 7 was our little group.

The comics were sincere in their efforts, though you could tell they were nervous.  Some had note cards with them which I don't know if that is ok or not in regular professional comedy shows.

They weren't the funniest group of comics that I've ever seen, but it was a good way to spend the evening with friends for something different.

I think next time we'll try the more professional show, our group unanimously agreed on that.  But good idea for a different type of evening if you are not wanting to go to the bar scene.

This place is awesome! It's BYOB so we brought a bottle of wine along with some Carl's Jr haha.  Others had grey goose and what not.  It was less then 10 bucks to get in.  We got there late so they were out of seats but we sat in another room and watched on close caption tv which happened to be where the performers came and hung out afterwards so we got to make some new friends with some of the performers. About half of the performers were truly funny and the rest were just OK.  Oh and if you take the stairs on your way out...go down to like the second floor and you'll notice you hear music thumping on the other side of the wall.  Open the door in front of your and you are now inside of Ruby Skye for FREE haha! Don't get caught!!

Good place to go and have some fun for cheap.

The place was small and intimate which was nice and in general all the comedians were pretty funny. It's BYOB (in case you haven't ready any of the other reviews) which I thought was nice b/c I know other places have a two drink minimum. The only problem is that people will get pretty drunk and start acting like idiots and start to take away from the acts.

The only thing good about standing near Ruby Skyee.

So this place is a little hard to find, but well worth the search (i.e. B D). I've been over a dozen times and laugh my ass off to almost all the comedians. Best two to check out? Laura Gallegos and Ali Mafi: best gay jokes ever and always keep me entertained with the great new material. Remember that this is a "college", so you might come across some comics that aren't too funny...but they all have to learn somewhere, right?

Best part, you can bring your own booze. Second best part, very cheap price of admission and if you buy the tickets online (www.brownpaperbag.com) you can donate some of the money to a charity of your choice.

So, all around great time. Whenever you are looking for something to do before going out on a Saturday night, this is your place...

Even though the show was pretty much sold out, they were nice enough to squeeze a couple more chairs in for us. I didn't even think to buy pre-sale tickets. Thank you!

The show was $10 and BYOB. We ended up right in front and were a little worried that we'd be picked on, but there were two other birthday parties there to distract the comedians. Note: if you say its your birthday, you will be brought attention to.

I cant even decide who was my favorite. There were about 6 comedians and they all pretty much made my cheeks hurt and turned my face bright red...or was that the stiff vodka ginger ales I kept pouring myself?

Either way it was a great time and well worth it. I recommend it to visitors and locals.

AWESOME!  A 10 buck comedy show in a central location and BYOB? Is this place for real? Yes!

Went here with a large group of friends.  I unfortunately was one of those "drunk idiots" Dustin H is referring to, but hey, we all had a pretty entertaining time.

Comedy is definitely funny.  Some were better than others.  There is a liquor store on the corner but it is VERY expensive.  Definitely bring your alcohol from home.

I'll be back, but definitely not sitting in the front row and definitely not drinking hard A so next time I won't be one of those idiots :-)

I went with a group of friends to The Clubhouse last night for the first time and was blown away by the big talent this hole in the wall had to offer.  I literally laughed my ass off the entire time. The venue is small and intimate, which I really liked because there wasn't a bad seat in the house. They actually had to bring in extra chairs for folks because it had sold out and they were willing to squeeze em in.  You provide your own booze, and they provide popcorn, brownies and the best entertainment that $10 can buy. The staff was friendly and the comics were a potpourri of talent/experience levels and were able to touch a wide spectrum of topics (not the Carlos Mencia type who runs the same tired gamete into the ground).

If you love to love to laugh, or even if comedy clubs aren't your thing, I would highly recommend checking this place out.

Let's see - $5-10 cover, BYOB, great original stand-up comedy, and located right across the street from the world-famous Biscuits & Blues??

Count me in.

The Clubhouse is really what comedy shows should be.  Like others said, they don't depend on bar sales to make money, so there is not a push for the comics to do material "for the masses".  What a great experience.  I recommend this place to anyone and everyone who likes to laugh.  If you don't like to laugh - go see "Wild Hogs".

Cheap cover and BYOB makes for a cheap night out.  I have been here a few times and the comics have impressed me each time.  Sometimes the place is packed and other times you have a little more room to spread out.

There is a liquor store on the corner, so if you need to grab another bottle you don't have far to go.  Staff is friendly too.

The comedy college is a great group of people and a great place to learn how to be funny. Kurtis and all the people I studied with became friends and mentors which helped pave the way for the work I do today. It was one of the best things I ever did for myself.

If just to go and watch the comedians perform or actually deciding to get up and try it yourself you'll love it. Who doesn't love to laugh and/or be laughed at!

The shows here are hilarious- you want to see the same comics you'd have to buy expensive drinks at at clubs in a smaller, more intimate setting where you can sit and chug a box of wine while watching? Come to the SFCC Clubhouse.

The Saturday shows are always packed, and in the end a lot of people get turned away, so make plans to go see the Friday night showcase at 9:00. It's cheap, it's BYOB, the comedians are hilarious.

Go on a Friday!

When I was in SF (end of January, 2008), I wanted to go to this place so bad after reading such great reviews about it. I stayed at Maxwell (on Geary Street) close to Union Square -- where this comedy club supposed to be but wasn't. I asked my friend who stays in SF, Maxwell hotel people, and  people on the streets - if they knew where it was?
And no one had even heard of it and had no idea there was a comedy club.
I called the number several times too and no answer.
I walked back and forth around Mason st. and Geary st. but no where to be found.

Ruined my plans for the night with friends. We ended up getting tired and frustrated and just had dinner at Cheesecake Factory.

I think this is a good 'date' place.  This is really neat how they can do it so affordably, and it's a great time all around.  The parking is a bit - well, let's just say you need to get there early, but I'm still rating this place at 5 stars because of the neat show they put on is well worth every penny!

We were there when it was pretty busy, pretty packed. If it were a little bigger / more room, I wouldn't mind :).

SF Comedy College is a great place to begin doing stand-up. Kurtis (the instructor) is fantastic and has some great insights into how to begin. I wanted to go this place when I read reviews on it. I went there with my girl friend Julia. She was so excited, because she love to crack jokes.

It was a small room and less of chairs but comedian were too good. They  made some funny comedies but other was coooool ! ! ! ! !

I think they should enlarge the place so more people can sit with comfort.

what a great way to spend a wednesday night. just bring a six pack or even some wine (they provide cups!). the small room wasn't even half full but it sure sounded like it was sold out. every single comic was hilarious, like choke on my beer hilarious.

a group of high school girls sat in the front row &, due to their drunken demeanor, were the butt of many a joke. that shit brightened my day, even though i had to witness them throwing up in the restrooms & peeing in the sinks. girls will be girls.

Good way to start the night. We came here based on the Yelp Reviews we read, and were happy with it overall. The only minuses were that not too many people came. The room was nice & small, but it got only half-filled - part of the fun of going to comedy is a full audience with lots of laughing. BYOB is a great way to save money though - and there's a liquor store on the corner outside so you can stop there right before..

I was there last friday for the 7pm show definately a place where you can come for some laughs specially right after work on a friday, the people that work the door are very friendly and there's great talent, also I think Dave Attell will be performing at the end of Feb. I was there with my girlfriend and some co-workers unfortunately for the comedians one of my co-workers....we will call him Trucker Hank...was blasted (Hennessy & Vodka will do that to you) and started heckling the comedians on stage....he even boooed, it sucked sitting next to him, the last comedian took the the stage and Trucker Hank kept talking and talking and talking so the comedian finally took notice and ripped him a new arse...which was very well deserve. I'm going back for sure, but next time I'm not buying my liquor at the corner store way too expensive and NO Trucker Hank he will be attending some AA meetings on fridays.

The comedy isn't all ready for prime time, but for such inexpensive tickets ($5-7) and a great BYOB policy, you really can't beat it for cheap thrills.

We went on a Friday night (to the early show), and had our choice of seats (although there isn't a bad seat in the house).  Out of the six or seven comics, most were genuinely good, and even the ones who needed more work were entertaining (albeit more in a laughing at, rather than with, kind of way).  All of the comics and staff were really friendly and they even supplied cups for those wishing to mix their own drinks.

As other posters have stated, the cost benefit analysis is always going to come out in favor of the Clubhouse: 1.5 hrs of comedy + BYOB = an affordable and fun evening.

One caveat though: don't buy your booze at the liquor store at the corner of Geary and Mason (the closest one to the Clubhouse). That place is a total rip-off.
