One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
I love stand-up comedy. I don't get a chance too often to GO to a show, but I mean, that's what I have Comedy Central for, yo. It cures all.
So I got a chance to go to this one last night, and dragged a couple of my friends along with me. They were a little reluctant, especially at the fact that it was a 'comedy college' and swore to kill me if they didn't laugh.
(Whatevs.)
I'm not being biased whatsoever, but this was probably one of the greatest times I've had at any comedy club. Everyone was hilarious; it got to a point where my ears were hot and my face started to hurt from all the laughing I was doing. Ali Mafi was headlining the show that night and once he came on - forget it, I lost it. I was laughing so hard, my bladder started to cry in pain. My friends were laughing hysterically next to me, and I was collapsing in a fit - torn between pain and laughter.
It was AWFUL.
But it felt so good. I was bummed when it was over.
My friends loved it -- we talked about it nonstop from the second we left to the time it took for us to separate. So yeah - it was amazing. This show was awesome and I'd probably seize the chance to go to each show they do, but um -- my bladder took a beating last night and really, if I have to start wearing Depends to this place everytime, my life will be over.
What an awesome little spot.
You can bring your own booze. That is awesome.
It's reasonable.
It's fun.
We came to the Clubhouse to see "all about jack"
Looking at their upcoming line up lots of local talent, and oh yeah, did I mention that it's reasonable? yay!
BYOB
Super relaxed crowd who wants to have a good time
Ridiculously cheap entry ($5 on a wed night)
Two hours (go to the last show) of nonstop people trying to make you laugh, a few blunders but generally a thumbs up
Great hosts that you wish could have their own stand up time
Great to go with a group of friends, on a date (awesome!), by yourself, with your mom (if she can handle sexually charged jokes).
All I gotta say is if you want to see some new talent do their thing come check us out. I am a current student since July 2009 and I've defiantly seen some improvement on my stage presence.
Now your not coughing up headliner dollars so don't look for Dave Chappelle or anything but for that quick comedy fix I'd recommend coming here.
Particularly Wednesdays and Thursdays because I'm there!
Had a great time with my friends here . There's a mix of amateurs here and were moderately funny, but the whole event was enjoyable.
Just moved here and thought I would be nice to take my brother (who is visiting this week) to a stand up comedy show. The ratings were very good on Yelp and I like to support local acts, but my god: it was horrible. It was painful. For as well the comedians as the crowd! We went to the Tuesday show. Including us there were maybe 8 people (also a tough job for the comedians, I must say). Cover was 5 dollars, but hey we should get money to look at this! There were different comedians the whole show, doing a 7 minute act. There were a few ok, but overall all comedians just sucked. Hard! Almost all comedians asked the audience (8 people) every new act where we were from. In the end we started telling ourselves where we were from... Some comedians thought we didn't get the joke because we were not laughing. No, it just wasn't funny man!
What a disaster. Worst show I've ever seen (been to shows in Europe, Australia, New York, Las Vegas).
I went here on Saturday with some friends and let me tell you, it was the most fun I've had in a long long long time (and this is coming from a totally fun person)!!! You cannot go wrong with a place that encourages you to BYOB!
And, did I mention it was only $12?!?
San Francisco Comedy College holds a series of both free and paid shows with more experienced acts toward the end of the week. It's BYOB at the club during both the weeks and weekends. Some AWESOME performers take stage, without the high ticket price that's associated with other major venues. Check out the full review at http://www.justinslive...
THEY ARE INCREDIBLE! I booked them for my sorority's bid day, and they created a custom set just for us! No joke, I couldn't choose which comedian we thought was funnier, more engaging, or more enthusiastic to be a part of our night! Every single girl in my sorority was blown away by how much fun they had, and found a way to connect with every comedian they heard. Not only was this hour and a half set absolutely hysterical, the management at this place is amazing. They completely catered to our needs, were understanding when we showed up 15 minutes late, and had a private room to accommodate all 125 of us with complimentary snacks and water! I would recommend them to anyone, in a group or not, who is looking for an inexpensive (ITS $5 per person!) and incredible way to spend a night in the city.
SERIOUSLY, the Clubhouse is GREAT.
Hate parking, love having a good laugh here. Very well priced. I love supporting locals and up and coming folks =)
Holy shit. I have been to some great comedy shows and some crappy ones in my life, but nothing can beat the Clubhouse! The friday night shows are HILARIOUS and how much are drinks? I GET TO BRING MY OWN? hell yes! I take my out of town guests here, and all my friends, and I always get super excited when it's time to go back. Check it out if you haven't yet - you will not be disappointed!
I went here with my boyfriend and my brother on a Thursday night. We're all broke, unemployed, recent college graduates crashing at our parents' house, so pickings are slim when it comes to fun things to do in San Francisco. I found this place through Yelp, and the cheap price sold me. BYOB made it even better. The other comedy joints around town have two drink minimums, so even if the tickets there are the same price as the SFCC, you still end up shelling out another ten bucks just for a couple beers.
So with booze mooched off from the 'rents, we headed downtown to watch the show. It was an hour and a half long and we watched at least, oh, 15, maybe even 20 comedians do their schtick. Some were OK, some were painfully awkward, but some were so hilarious, my sides literally ached with laughter. At the end of the night, my cheeks were hurting from smiling so much.
I will definitely come back here if I ever need a laugh, and I will certainly bring more friends. Rock on, SFCC, rock on.
Great time Friday night! (BYOB is genius!)
Comedy level was really impressive. All the comedians were really good; each one was coming from a different angle. The redneck from North Carolina and the Vietnamese Jew were awesome! The girl hosting was also really adorable and funny. (Sorry I can't remember the names!)
I want to come here every time I visit San Francisco. Thanks SFCC Clubhouse!
Came here last night sort of on a whim and was very impressed! These comedians are truly talented and $!2 for a Friday night show made it very affordable. I'll definitely be back!
Went here last night, was put on the guestlist since the headliner was a friend of a friends. had the best time! super funny people, relaxed chill younger crowd. the BYOB makes it a five star event. really laughed all night and would totally go again.
Comedy is always a very subjective thing. So, maybe I underestimate this place. Show is $15 at the door but slightly less if you pay in advance. The BYOB is nice and there was plenty of seating even though we had a group of 6.
This was my first comedic experience in SF. I've done NYC and Chicago numerous times so I guess I should have known there would be regional differences.
3 acts. The first was a Vietnamese Jew. The 2nd was a 50+ mom who was a finalist for world's funniest mom, and the last was Ali Mafi (or something like that) who was Iranian and gay...so much for the President of Iran saying a few years back there was no such thing.
It was clear all three were testing out material which is fine since it is a Comedy College. Good mix of humor, kind of made me want to start writing down some stand-up material :-)
Ali Mafi was really hilarious, involved the audience in a lot of his jokes, and was obviously skilled on doing some humor on the fly.
Little too much c-o-c-* suc*ing jokes for me (from the mom and Ali) but the overall result got some laughs out of me,
This place is awesome. I went with some friends who came from out of town and had a great time. I was literally laughing the whole time. Definitely got my money's worth.
I'm looking forward to going back.
Last night I experienced Comedy ClubHouse -- and it was great!
Funny, honest and simply amusing evening.
1. BYOB.
They have plastic cups, and wine bottle openers, and ice.
2. Deal on tickets
(I got mine at http://www.brownpapert...)
After it finished, we stepped out of the building and Ruby Sky was right there -- I felt sorry for ppl, waiting in line, (some girls almost naked) paying $20 in cover + X amount for drinks so later they can pretend that it was fun :(
Talk about FUN!
My wife and I, are STILL laughing.
These people really know how to make you enjoy yourself.
I double dog dare you to find a more entertaining hour-and-a-half for $12 in this city.
No wait, scratch that; taking Muni is only a dollar fifty.
This review is for the clubhouse Saturday show last month called "Stand-up Project's Pro Show Workout." My friend and I thought we would try it out for the first time since all the ratings on here from this place are positive. When we got there, the place was empty and consisted of about 6 people who attended (including ourselves). There were a HANDFUL of giggles and laughs here and there but overall, it didn't really hit the spot. Some jokes were dry and not funny; it seemed like they were trying way too hard where it became just lame.
We felt like this show was not worth our $. Next time, we want to attend the show featured All Womens Comedians; we walk passed it earlier in the night and saw how crowded it was - it looked way more fun than the Stand-up pro show that we went to.
Here, tonight, I learned to laugh again.
A friend invited us to watch her compete in a comedy competition in the Clubhouse. Nine competitors, one professional MC, and a famous comedian were in the lineup. Everyone in the room was here to laugh, and the comics delivered.
And our friend won the competition!
Can't believe I didn't know about this place sooner!!
We were planning on going to see Tracy Morgan but after he cancelled his show at Cobbs (Wanker) we decided to go to the Scantily Clad Comedy show as plan B. So glad we did because I have a feeling that the Scantily Clad show would have out done Tracy's desperate attempt.
Okay so first off the tix were SUPER CHEAP, $12 to see 7 comics in a two hour time frame....what? - come on that's awesome!!
Second of all - BYOB!! What a brilliant concept, right? No two drink minimum nonsense. Just drop in the liquor store on the corner before the show and pick up your choice of beverage and you're good to go! Don't worry about bringing a bottle opener, they have plenty of loaners at the Clubhouse, just don't forget to return it.
The seating area in front of the stage is intimate yet comfortable with plenty of leg room. All of the comics were excellent, I was pleasantly surprised. Very funny local comics on the rise to stardom!
All I have to say is "Thanks Tracy Morgan"!!
The Friday night show is just a good call. The other reviews have made the cheap price and BYOB policy clear - but I'll add two things.
#1 there are two liquor stores in walking distance of the place (which is just an office building - if you think you are walking into the wrong place, then your doing the right thing) .
#2 you get out right around 11 and are ready to bounce around the bars after the best pre-party in town.
If you are on this page wondering if you should go - do it. There's always one or two comics that are not so strong (of anywhere from 5-7 a night), but It's surprisingly good comedy overall and the last act usually kills the BYO-boozy room.
"That I know of!" If you don't get it, you need to get to the comedy college.
I love, love, love this place. It makes me want to quit my day job and get up on stage. Since the majority of the contenders are students - some are funny as "hello". Others bomb - which is just as fun (and gets WAY more laughs).
It's cheap, you can bring your own food and drink, and they are always so nice. I've been 5 or 6 times, random Friday nights, special occasions, and even for my honeymoon (false).
I almost don't want to review it cause I don't want others to go, but in the name of Yelp....
BYOB and six comedians for $12 is good no matter how you slice it.
I had a great time here. I went for a Friday night show, and about half of the comedians were fairly weak. But the other three more than made up for it, and I was guffawing into the night. There was a heckler in the crowd which sucked and made me feel bad for the comedians. Luckily one of the comedians (Reggie Steele - if you don't know, now you know) gave it to her good (pause) at which point the entire crowd turned on her and started heckling her.
Just go.
Multiple personalities is a good thing when it comes to comedy, and the SFCC&C is really doing an icredible service to us SanFranciscuan's who prefer not to drop a few Hamiltons for a comedy show.
The diverse set of comedians and their outstanding use of self deprecating humor mixes well w/the BYOB standard set forth here. And yes, it is "bring your own beer (or whatever liquid you want)"- which was almost too good to be true.
a good crowd isn't necessarily a given, but in the face of hecklers these comedians showed no fear. Outrageous.
See it for yourself!
COMEDY - Great
FREE MINI BROWNIES - AMAZING
BYOB - UNBEATABLE!!
The standup here is pretty much always great. I went to an amazing pro show on Saturday and was so impressed by the talent that I decided to enroll in a beginner stand-up class.
Now I perform open mic stand-up 2-3 times a week and even taking improv classes. This place is seriously so cool - the most hilarious comics in SF AND it's BYOB!!! and the entrance fees are negligible. Amazing.
I took Joe Klocek's riffing class this past weekend and I'm surprised to see the review below-- reviewer was maybe in a previous class. By my count, there were twelve people in the class on Saturday, and only one didn't get up onstage (and he noted that he was told that might happen when he signed up).
The class was much more hands-on than just a lecture. About an hour was spent reviewing Joe's basics of riffing, followed by some improv games that helped demonstrate the principles we had just gone over. As far as stage time, except for the aforementioned forewarned guy, everyone got 3-5 minutes to practice riff. This also brought up questions from people that weren't onstage, so we got a lot of really good practical advice during the stage time part of the class.
Joe is a professional-- learning from him about how to riff is a great opportunity (if you've ever seen him do it, you know he's amazing), and this class is a really good deal for 3+ hours with him. If you sign up in advance, you *are* guaranteed stage time, and this class usually goes on every other month and is advertised about a month in advance, so there's ample opportunity to make sure you are included in that.
If you're thinking about trying to build up your crowd work this is really the best place to go. If you're thinking about doing it, I'd recommend you go see Joe perform sometime-- that should help make up your mind!
Great place for comedy love the Wednesday night Open Mic. With BYOB it doesn't get better. I enjoy the chance to see comics working on their material. Some comics are better than others but for the price you can't beat it. I highly recommend checking it out.
So I've been too lazy to Yelp this place but it deserves a good rating so here goes.
Came here on a Friday night last year because an ad was on Craigslist for $5 special for 2 shows. The drawback: You have to sit through an amateur show to get to the real show. My friend and I were 2 of the 3 people sitting in the 7pm amateur show which was lukewarm funny. The jokes were funny but we were trying to be encouraging and supportive to the amateur comedians so we were laughing extra loud and hard. Joe, the ticket guy let us have all the free brownies and cookies we wanted so the $5 paid for itself.
On to the real show: Started at 9pm and it was packed. The venue was super small (a small stage and 3 rows of seating all around). Everyone had their beer in paper bags. BYOB!?!? That's super cool. We bought slices of pizza from the corner pizzaria and brought it back to eat. Don't sit in the front or you will get made fun of for the whole hour and a half.
The comedians were hilarious I almost cried. My stomach hurt from laughing. I couldn't believe the amazing $5 deal this was. A great Friday night, super toned abs, brownies, cookies, and new friends for $5?!?! We walked out and laughed at all the folks in line for Ruby Skye still waiting to start their night at 11:30pm.
I was crying and running to the bathroom at the same time!
I recently visited the SF Comedy Clubhouse with six friends and I had a blast. I highly RECOMMEND if you plan to visit, you purchase your tickets a few days in advance, for the space is small and sooner or later the crowds will get bigger. This place is definitely worth your money and time. Only $12 and BYOB (and you can bring food)!!! WHO CAN BEAT THAT!!! Definitely bring a few BEERS, wine, and booze, shoot bring a bottle of Vodka. The day we went 6 comedians performed for a good hour and then our head liner, Ali Mafi, performed for an hour. Please, do sit in the front =). 2/3 of the comedians were hilarious. ALI MAFI, he had me crying beer. I highly recommend you not drink to much alcohol, for you'll be running to the bathroom between acts.
It did have a few dislikes. It's located on the 5th floor of what looks like an old tacky apartment building and the space is pretty small. One comedian kept focusing on sexual jokes, which isn't funny when you're like 60. FUNNY, MORE LIKE NASTY! Oh, who was that comedian that was talking to the demons in her pussy? FUNNY, MORE LIKE CRAZY!
Even with those 2 comedians, it was still worth our visit. BYOB! Woot-woot!
Great bet for dates, girls nights or to take visitors. They have a big line up of comedians so while a couple acts might just be so-so, there will be a couple that will make you laugh so hard it hurts!
Did someone already mention BYOB?? Such a great concept!
Not recommended for sensitive people.
$12 per person. FUNNY! Show runs an hour and a half long.
BYOB and food. Tight!
Good times!
PUBE X Cube!...hahaa...OMG LMAO!
Watched a fun show here Saturday night -- it was a bunch of comedians who were part of the "college," and they were in the prelim rounds for the comedy competition. Enjoyed seeing the new comics, some were better than others, and for $10, the price was right.
I thought it was great that the place also had a "headliner" after all the competitors had gone, and he was hilarious and obviously a pro. This let the show end on a real highlight.
Clubhouse Comedy was my very first live stand up comedy experience, so I don't really know if this is considered worth it or not. All I know is that I had a fun time!
There were 5 or so comedians performing that night, and a few were definite duds, but a couple were hilarious. One of the comedians cracked a Michael Jackson joke (only a week after he had passed), and one guy walked out! They need to diversify their show a little bit; I think all but one of the comedians were gay, and there was an overload of self bashing gay jokes. Of course BYOB is very nice, and they even supply bottle openers!
I really enjoyed my experience at the San Francisco Comedy College.
I went here with a bunch of friends, and then ran into more friends when we were there. We had such a great time and the price was really much less than the larger San Francisco Bay Area stages, so you must check it out!
For $12 you can't go wrong. It wasn't the funniest comedy show I have been to, but I did burst out in to laughter several times. It's a smaller club, so audience participation and banter with the comedian should be expected.
The best part was the BYOB, although here are a few pointers.
1. They only have small plastic cups, no glasses, or even wine glasses. You might want to stick to beer in a bottle if you are a wine glass snob like myself.
2. No ice! You better buy something cold otherwise you will suffer.
3. No mixers, which means you have to bring soda if you are making a cocktail. But, they do have a soda machine, in case you don't come prepared.
4. Buy your liquor somewhere FAR from Nob Hill, the mark-up at the nearby liquor stores in insane. $30 for a cheap bottle of wine, $50 for decent vodka, and $4 for a red bull. Yikes.
So for $10 this was a great deal. We came for the comedy competition and while some of the comics were very funny (2), others were just ok (4). But overall it was a fun experience and my friend brought a great Malbec so it was the perfect combination.
While they were tallying the audience votes, they brought out some more seasoned comedians who made me laugh. I felt bad for the two pregnant couples (both in their 9 month) in the front row, one comic spent most of his time sharing childbirth stories. I want to check out Naked Comedy.
Some of the participants brought their friends, which explained why they won the contest cause they weren't really all that funny ....
