5 reviews for San Francisco Airport South Travelodge
I had a two-day business seminar to attend at one of the hotels closer to the water, (on the other side of the freeway), and decided to stay here. The other places, (on the other side of the freeway), have a bad habit of wanting to charge your CAR to stay the night as well, (usually to the tune of about $18/night).
I did the internet special which ran me something like $88 out the door (July 2009), for a two-bed room. Beds were newer, everything was in new-like condition and the restroom/shower were in good repair.
As mentioned in other reviews, BART and CalTrain are a short walk away. Also close at hand is a Japanese restaurant on one side and a Wendy's on the other. Across El Camino Real, (the main blvd.), are two strip malls, one with a major chain grocery and a MC pharmacy. The other strip mall has local eateries, bakery, etc. all within walking distance.
Here's a personal secret. Sometimes I sleep funny. I go to bed early and wake in the middle of the night. So I had some coffee in the pot in the room. Not the best in the world but adequate. When my traveling companion woke and said he wanted coffee too, there was no joe for his piehole. So I went down to the office, (4am). The very nice lady night clerk fishes under the counter and comes up with not one but two extra serving packets. Bless her pea-picking heart! That my friends is called SERVICE. So here it is. The desk help was excellent. David had me checked in in a flash. The lady in the morning (not the night shift lady), had me out the same way. And kudos to the night shift lady, you are the person who made my stay worthwhile. You're simple kindness and generosity have made me a customer for life. I sure hope your bosses take notice.
I also want to point out that in the morning there's a continental breakfast bar with toastable breads with spreads, some fruit and a lovely machine that excretes OJ. Another one excretes reasonable coffee, all at everyone's favorite price, FREE. (With room rental, offers vary, check your local listings, et cetera, ad nauseum.)
IS the SF Airport Travelodge the Ritz Carlton? No. Is it a clean, safe, quiet, friendly and AFFORDABLE place to stay? Absolutely. No doubt you'll see this piehole there again!
Ideal hotel to stay at if you are not planning to drive in SF during peak season.
highlights:
1. it's pretty affordable. around $100/night during peak season
2. it's in a safe area for a single female traveler
3. it's 5 min walk to the bart and caltrain stations, lucky's, walgreens, and a few fast food places including in 'n out
4. remodeled. the bed and pillows were so comfortable
5. free wifi
6. free contential bfast with deli ham and boiled eggs. not bad! i was watching the hostess bake cinnamon rolls on the spot!
7. the elevator is really fast.
8. fast friendly and speedy shuttle service to and from the airport
9. very nice staff
lowlights:
1. bathroom fixtures are older. the shower stall is really tiny even though the water pressure is awesome.
2. occasional airplane flying above. i noticed it the first night and not the other two nights.
3. it is a 30-minute train ride into the city but i used this time to take a nap :)
all in all, i would definitely stay here again and we are for our upcoming sf trip!
We chose this hotel due to its location, amenities, and price. The free 24 hour shuttle to the airport is pretty fantastic, but you have to call for it from the courtesy phone on the airport end and schedule a time for it on the hotel end. But if you remember to, it is very very nice.
Good stuff: Cute, felt safe, 100 yards from a BART station, free shuttle to go the 1 mile to the airport, price is right, free wi-fi worked great, best shower EVER.
Less than good: Breakfast was mediocre continental breakfast, our "queen" bed seemed awfully small to be a queen. The lady at the front desk in the morning had a bit of an attitude when we asked a few questions, but I think she was just stressed.
We used this place as our base when visiting San Francisco and it was perfect for that purpose. I don't regret staying outside the city at all.
Although we live in the area, we stayed here b/c of a $15 'glitch rate' (I know!) and couldn't resist. Ran into lots of world trekker types, most of whom hear about it the wiki-way. Rooms are standard/basic and not the most modern decor, but very clean and good TV. Quiet except for ambient plane noise. Continental breakfast was much better than expected...boiled eggs, sandwich meats, and hot cinnamon buns. Nice! Good budget option, as it's within walking distance to restaurants and BART/CalTrain. Locally owned/managed and the owners appear to take great pride in the place.
On business? Need to save some cash traveling? Want a place to stay outside the hustle bustle of the city, particularly south? Need proximity to BART & CalTrain? Like Chinese food? Stay here.
You could definitely find places to stay directly in the city and challenge their prices on, say, priceline for something comparable, but for convenience, I was pleased with this Travelodge. Only a quick shuttle south from SFO, the location is IDEAL if you're going to be on BART going to South San Francisco, Daly City, etc or on Caltrain going south to Palo Alto or beyond. It's a one-minute walk to the Millbrae BART/CalTrain station, and the local restaurant strip just a quick walk away. Mostly asian affair (try the Thai Stick or Shanghai Dumpling Shop), but there's a Safeway if you're budget-minded, a pizza joint, a 24-hour diner, and a Walgreens across the street. Again remember, you're far from the city (~30m on BART to Powell station) but for non-splurging business-ites or folks making their budget stretch, go for it.
As for the rooms, they're nothing extravagant, but suitable. They're up-to-snuff on cleaning, and offer decent cable, in-room wifi, safes big enough to hold a 17" laptop, comfy pillowtop beds. Showers are so-so, they look rather ancient, but it's always hot and the water pressure is strong. A continental breakfast is offered - minimal - but hey, it's offered and it saves you $10. Good way to start the day.
Service was awful at first, a Italian-European gentleman who sort of lackadaisically looked at us like, "What are you doing here?" and answered our questions with a "Duh" demeanor, but we never saw the him again. The blond-haired woman who was there every time after (does she sleep?) was great and extremely friendly.
Not for someone who wants to explore the city, but great for what it is.
