2 reviews for San Bernardino County Museum
The first Sunday of the month is free, so I figured if we didn't like it then all we lost was the gas money.
Well we ended up spending two hours devouring the exhibits. Yes it is old, yes the AC didn't work too well in certain areas, but for the area it is a halfway decent museum. My kids loved the exploration room with all of the live animals. They got to pet a snake and see many native reptiles up close.
It looks like the smaller exhibits change every 6 months or so which gives me reason to return. They had a local author there that day and the kids got a kick out of seeing her and her book. And for kids it doesn't matter what they wrote, the fact that they are published is a thrill in itself.
All the staff was very pleasant. A girl was working a station and described different games that indian children would play and had a rabbit pelt for them to feel. We didn't try the on site cafe, but the gift shop had a lot of neat items at typical museum store prices.
The cactus garden in the front of the museum needed tending and I could imagine this place during the week when a school tour is present would be horrendous. But I wouldn't add this place to your skip list. Regular admission is only about $6 for adults, and children under 5 are free.

Very disappointing. This museum is obviously underfunded, as it has a very few exhibits and most all of them were clearly put together decades ago. When they do have visiting exhibits the artifacts lack proper provenience which adds to a number of problems related to cultural resources. It's truly a pity that the museum perpetuates problems of that kind instead of protecting the resources they're charged with and educating the public about the commodification of antiquities. As a taxpayer I find it horrifying that the largest county in the country with such a rich archeology has so little funding and attention. I felt as though I did most of my learning in the gift shop.
