45 reviews for San Benito House
DATE: August 8, 2009, Saturday Afternoon at Half-Moon Bay @ 3:50 PM
After playing at Pescadero Beach, Boyfriend and I drove to Half Moon Bay to stroll, window shop and grab an early dinner.
THE TOWN:
Half-Moon Bay is such a cute and quaint little PUMPKIN town. The drive to Half-Moon Bay is part of the whole enjoyable experience. We passed by Christmas Tree farms, small wineries which offered wine tastings, little farm stands, nurseries selling roses and local crafts. We went window-shopping at whimsical little shops.
THE VENUE:
BF said he was really hungry (again!). We just wanted a casual laid-back early dinner before heading back home. We ran into San Benito House which I recognized right away from reading the Yelp reviews.
As soon as we walked in, I smelled stale beer and/or puke (gross, I know.) It wasn't very strong so I just pretended it was just stale beer. The place was divey, and nostalgic--reminiscent of a saloon in the early 1900's with a wooden bar and booths for seating. Even the chandeliers were from that period. An animal activist will probably not eat at this place because there were stuffed heads of elk, ram and moose hanging on the wall.
THE MOOD:
Relaxed. Few people ordered a bottle of wine and were just chillin'.
OUR SERVER:
It started out really slow for us. We waited for over 10 minutes to even get a menu. However, once it got started everything was really fast and timely. Our server was very, very nice and efficient. She worked really hard that we ended up leaving a 40% tip to show our appreciation. She thought we ordered Polenta Sticks and ended up giving it to us for free.
THE MANAGER:
There was a woman there who scared me and the two little girls in the bathroom. I'm just assuming she was the manager. She had an accent which I assume was European. She entered the bathroom to fix it. She grumbling in a loud voice, "I guess I am a plumber now. I don't know how to do this, etc. etc." She went on and on and started banging in one of the stalls. When I got out of the stall the two little girls were frozen scared. I almost told my BF for us to just leave but he was already holding the menu. Scary woman!
THE FOOD AND DRINKS:
-A GLASS OF PROSECCO: Well-chilled, fresh, bubbly and refreshing
-GARLIC FRIES: Garlicky just like how we liked ours
-(Free) POLENTA STICKS: Freshly fried, cheesy and really good!
-2 ORDERS OF CHARBROILED HAMBURGERS ON BRIOCHE BUN W/ FRIES:
Juices were coming out with every bite. The flavor of the Charbroiled was also in every bite although a little salty with the cheddar. The bread was fresh. The last time I had a hamburger was April 2008 at Barney's. I've been craving it since. Let me just say that the hamburger at San Benito House was worth breaking my 1 1/2 years of hamburger abstinence. BF and I devoured ours in silence and we both agreed that the hamburgers were really good as well as our entire meal!
OUR TAB: $34.14 (including tax and a diet coke before the tip)
DESSERT: We stopped by at Half-Moon Bay Bakery before heading to our car where we bought walnut, chocolate and raspberry cookies for $0.45 to $0.75 each. HMB bakery has been around since 1927. Traditional and old little place with a friendly staff. The cookies were yummy! (Cash only).
ENDING ON A SWEET NOTE:
My clothes were still uncomfortably wet from playing on Pescadero Beach. We were happy and relaxed but burned out from hanging out all day. It was a perfect afternoon!

San Benito House isn't just a deli or bar, its a historic landmark to the town. Have you ever ventured past their deck? There is a beautiful garden in the back, great for weddings.
In fact, I got married here 2 weeks ago. It was beautiful. It has a intimate feeling to it, perfect for my small wedding, but can also accomodate larger parties as well. The owners were great, and were extremely helpful. Their daughter was out there tying bows, helping guests, and coordinating everything wonderfully.
The food was excellant, and actually the owners wife hand rolled the pasta herself the night before. That blew my husband and I away. We felt very taken care of, and the whole event did not send us to the poor house. Every penny was worth it.
But also that deli is awesome, just had to say that too. The olive walnut bread rocks!
Thank you Cristina and Connie, you guys are the best!! I will always have fond memories from that day!!
I was here last Saturday to pick up a sarnie to fuel myself before I went on my 2.5-hours-long hike.
In front of me, some lady with a stank look on her face (you know, the type of expression where it just seems like the person is offended by the whole world) took about ten minutes to complete her transaction. This should never happen in a basic, no-frills sandwich shop.
First she wants X and Y on her sandwich but not Z and Q. Or wait, maybe X, she might as well. But forget Z. Then she snatches five brownies from the display basket, decides to buy them, but then quivers lengthily with miserly indecision and asks what they cost. After hearing the price, she insists that she has to taste one first before she'll commit to buying five, so she unwraps one and starts munching on it right then and there, and then declares that yes, yes, the brownies meet her standards and she will buy all five.
And then, even though the prices are clearly listed on the chalkboard from where people choose their order, she is SHOCKED, SHOCKED by the fact that her five HUGE brownies, drinks, and three large sandwiches made with just-baked bread and local produce costs over $20. Her expression becomes so stank that to placate her the cashier throws in a free sixth brownie.
And my point? The sandwiches here are so, SO good that I will put up with this tomfoolery in order to get my sarnie fix. And my loaf of FRESH BREAD.
Oh, tourists. Never change. *hearts*

I just stopped by for a sandwich in the afternoon and I'm updating to say that the sandwich shop is… Read more »
Great sandwiches and burgers. I got the rosemary chicken pesto sandwich and it was very moist and flavorful. The fires reminded me of McDonald's fries but not as greasy so success for them. The crowds at the bar can be a little rowdy and the table was quiet sticky which kind of matched the saloon type of ambiance. Overall nice place for a bite with a little panache and a lot flavor.
This place has gone through some changes over the years...used to be THE bar in HMB, then they added a deli, and finally a full restaurant.
The bar often has live music, and is a generally cool place to hang.
The deli makes a MEAN turkey sandwich (I'm sure their other sandwiches are too).
The restaurant is ok. Nothing jumps out at me as a "must visit here this Friday!" kinda thing...but if you're in town, and hanging at the bar for a few, a short walk to the back of the bar gives you access to a reasonable restaurant.
Sandwiches at this local favorite deli are simple and straightforward. The wall is covered with awards for best bread and best sandwiches in Half Moon Bay. Sandwiches are $6 each or $4 for half and they come on your choice of homemade bread: whole wheat, French, or olive walnut.
Types of sandwiches: * Turkey * Ham * Roast beef * Hot pastrami * Cheese & avocado * Tuna * PB & J * Hummus * Cucumber & cream cheese
Sandwiches include mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions. You can add on cheese and other extras. I had a tuna sandwich on French. I was surprised that they didn't wrap the sandwich - they put it on a paper tray and shoved it in a paper bag (WTF?). The sandwich was very messy to eat. The tuna salad had too much mayo and a mushy texture but I did like how they added tiny bits of carrots, celery and bell pepper bits to the salad. The veggies were fresh and they didn't shred the lettuce (yay). The bread was thickly sliced, spongy and soft, like a rustic white bread. Yum. Without the bread, I'd give the sandwich three stars. The bread deserves an extra star.
They sell drinks, chips, cookies, beer, salads and a soup of the day.
Though there's only one small table inside, there are plenty of places to sit outside on the deck and patio area. They had a decorated giant pumpkin to show their Halloween spirit.
They now serve breakfast but I'm not sure what they have. Credit cards accepted.
P.S. Locals call it San Benito, not Garden Deli. It says Garden on the sign because they have a garden on the premises.

This place was our breakfast savior during this year's Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival! It was our first time coming to this fest, and after driving there from the South Bay, negotiating traffic and parking and then walking through the festival through the Sunday morning cold at 9AM, we were starved! We saw the veeeerrrry long line for the famous pancake breakfast and just couldn't stomach standing and waiting that long as we were already cold and had underestimated the warm clothing factor.
We wandered around the area looking for an alternative and decided to try this place. We questioned and they said to head towards the back of the restaurant/bar where there was more seating, and lo and behold, we saw a lovely breakfast buffet set up in the backroom! :) Did we hear angels sing? ;)
We dropped our stuff at the nearest table and stepped in line. They had juice, coffee, yummy apple & cinnamon muffins (chunks of apple, yum!), eggs, house potatoes, fruit salad, apple sausage (gets another yum!) and bacon. We happily ate to our hearts content, enjoyed the ambiance (this place must've been built in the early 1900s and still had many of the original fixtures and architecture) and the service nicely checked on us to attend to our coffee/juice and to take away our empty plates.
Awww....after breakfast, we were ready to explore the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival at leisure with full bellys and lots of energy. Thank you, San Benito! We plan to come by Half Moon Bay again in the future, and we will definitely swing by for lunch and dinner.

A sandwhich is a sandwich, right? Hell no! Try a little home made French bread and you have entered the world of San Benito.
I was born and raised in HMB, and this place has always been the lunch choice for years. No matter how long the line is, I am going to wait in it. I am a late sleeper. Sometimes we stroll down Main Street about noon on Sundays. My fav thing is to grab a Turkey, Cheddar, Avocado and hang out with the other crazy locals in the bar area. Don't let the naked lady scare you....

We walked into the San Benito House Bar on Labor Day evening. Even though the place looked kinda divish, the menu looked interesting. I'm thinkin' "oh, maybe a Duartes (in Pescadero) kinda place."
So we ordered a couple of appetizersand a couple of entrees, but the first thing that came was an entree'. Wha???? And the entree we order was salmon with fettucini. What we got was salmon with spaghetti ............ yes, you are reading this right. And there wasn't very much salmon or spaghetti it it, I might add. And, the spaghetti was cut up into small pieces that kept sliding off our forks. Pretty frustrating................
Then my friend gets her very small entree of baked salmon with spinach. There was supposed to be risotto, but it was missing. Wha???? So we tell the waitress who proceeds to tell us we are wrong, then gets a menu and brings it over to show us. To her very snide astonishment, she realizes that we are right. So, she goes back to the kitchen and comes back to us to say, we don't have risotto. Then, after trying to get something else to substitute, she says, well, we have yellow risotto. Wha???? "ok, well get me some................." My friend gets her risotto and it is so salty and al dente that it is almost inedible.
Then my bf and I then get our appetizers. The salad was waaay too overdressed (a real pet peeve of mine). The prawns with greens and polenta was actually the best dish we had.
The waitress never asked us if we wanted another drink, nor did she ask us if we wanted dessert. To her credit, she did take my friend's salmon off the ticket. But that barely made up for the snarky attitude she had with us the whole time we were there and this was before the risotto/spaghetti debacle. And we didn't even complain about the short spaghetti.
Oh dear.

I'm kind of cheating, because this is the same review, more or less, that I gave the Garden Deli, but I'm putting it here, because, come on, no one in Half Moon Bay calls it the Garden Deli. They call it San Benito.
I have struggled for years to find a sandwich that comes close to the perfection that is this place. I always go for avocado and cheese with everything on it, but the other sandwiches are just as great.
Ecomama on the Garden Deli page mentioned the soup nazi, and yeah, there are definitely rules for ordering quickly, clearly, and decisively, but really, have you seen the line? I'd put stiff rules in order if I had the customer base this place does, too. Get there right as they open (11) or later close to closing (3) because otherwise the line is out the door.
The bread is what makes it amazing, though. The French roll is good, but I go for the wheat every single time. It doesn't get any better than this bread. Another reason to go when it's not as busy is because they tend to give thicker slices of bread when there are not so many people. Plus, good chance of getting fresh warm bread right out of the oven. Yum!
You can sit in the bar if there's not a function, which is fine, but the best is if you go around back to the garden. Try to nab a spot on the swing before anyone else and eat your wonderful sandwich while surrounded by beautiful flowers.

Honestly, I'm with everyone else here, the food is amazing! I love to grab a sandwich (turkey on sourdough with avocado and cheddar please!) and one of their amazing brownies. In the frig case you'll find somepretty yummy pasta sauces too... pesto with pine nuts being my personal fav.
The bread is fresh and sliced only when they need to use it. You can sit in the bar and eat too if you want. THis is a hotel, but not really meant to be a hotel, so honestly jus stay at the ritz if you want service... this is the Benito House... just pick up a deli sandwich, be nice to the old ladies behind the counter, and enjoy a solid sandwich that'll rival grandmom's ;D
In addition, anyone who doesn't like the sandwiches here is probably very picky and expecting something greasy, or super high end. THIS IS JUST A CLEAN SANDWHICH ON FRESHLY SLIDED BREAD! lol, get over yourself, it's yummy, don't be picky *smacks ya* ;)
OH, and enjoy HMB, it's a great town with lotsa culture... and fastastic beaches. True Cali at its greatness :)

My bf and I stayed at San Benito House for a night as part of a romantic weekend. My first impression: The place is really disorganized. You have to make a reservation over the phone, which went fine. But when I called again a few days later to ask about the check-in time, the first person I reached put me on hold and then hung up on me, and the second person told me check-in was at 11 am. Obviously they mixed up check-in and check-out, but even when I asked if he was sure about that, he reconfirmed. Well, we showed up at 2 pm, and the girl who did the check-in told us we were early....
I had booked the "Daisy Room" (#5), and I was assured it had a queen-size bed. It didn't. Just full size. But I didn't feel like complaining about it, since the staff seemed barely competent enough to give us a room in the first place.
The other feature of the room that had been described on the website was a "claw-footed bathtub". Sounded good, pretty romantic. However, what it means is that you have to take a bath, there is just the bathtub and no possibility of taking a shower, not even a hand-held shower head. Also, the toilet is so close to the sink that you can pee and brush your teeth at the same time...
No TV nor fridge either.
The other odd thing is that the hotel doesn't have a parking lot. There is street parking, but only for 2 hours, and a public lot a couple of blocks away where one can park for 24h max. Enough for us, but what if one stays for more than one night?
The hotel has a little sandwich place and a bar downstairs, but we didn't try either of them.
In summary: For a place near the beach, this is apparently pretty cheap ($99 for the room), but you definitely get what you pay for. Next time I would spend a bit more on a better hotel.
This restaurant confuses me. It used to be an old town dive with a rowdy bar and greasy home-style food. Now it's a high end restaurant with a giant Moose Head on the wall and old-time photos. There's still a residual old-town feel to the place but it doesn't match the modern changes. Service is inconsistent and bar tenders have a hard time managing more than a handful of customers. The bar is fun when it's packed but good luck getting a drink. Moreover, it's the only real bar in downtown Half Moon Bay and it closes at 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights which is lame.

stop (Benito time)! Are you hungry and do you want a sandwich? If the answer to these questions is "yes" and you're anywhere near Half Moon Bay, then you need to go to San Benito (unless you want a meatball sub or something, than you gotta head over to Lighthouse (formerly Cafe Salet) or something).
I don't care who you are or what kind of person you aspire to be, you need to eat the Wheat bread. Now I know, they have White and Olive Walnut that are on par with the homemadeness of the Wheat, but they have nothing on its deliciological content. We're talking about a bread here that will not only knock your socks off, but your feet will no longer even comprehend what a sock is. You'll be walking around with Bronze Age feet, that's how good this bread is.
Now I've been eating here since I was a little kid, I grew up on these sandwiches (and my feet are only just now getting through the dark ages, at least they have the renaissance to look forward too and I can start bathing them again...) so I might be a little biased towards them, but rest assured you will be in for a damn delicious lunch if you stop here. Also of note are the homemade soup of the day that changes every day (usually something delicious, though) and of course the homemade partially-cooked pastas they have available that you can take home and make a nice dinner around. The food is all fresh and all delicious, and while they may not have the greatest pastrami I've ever tasted, it's still the pastrami sandwich by which all others are measured simply because the bread is so damn good.
The place is tiny, so remember that when you see a line out the door (which happens reasonably often) and there are literally only two tables in the deli part, but you can take your sandwich back to the restaurant area for an indoor table, or outside where they have several tables spread out on a beautiful patio with a view of their great garden. Great place to bring the kids and let them share a massive sandwich.

There are two parts to San Benito House:
The first is the Garden Deli, home of fantastic straight-up sandwiches on superb home-made bread (by "straight-up" I mean, no overly complicated or cute varieties, but good quality veg. or meat and cheese options). The bread is what really makes it worthwhile, with the walnut bread the personal favorite.
The (newly reopened) second part is the restaurant, which also serves food in the main bar. Looks like the restaurant part is still ramping up, but the menu's been growing. Over the last few weeks my wife and I have stopped in a few times, and have enjoyed a number of dishes - noodles and sauce were all made fresh.
- Chicken Parmigiana was was nice and thin, with a great crust smothered in baked cheese (as expected).
- The Bolognese sauce is turning into my perfect favorite, hearty and multi-layered (we subbed the pasta and tried it with spaghetti instead)
- Ahi Tuna steak in a Balsamic reduction, with assortment of roasted vegetables
- Pasta with Fennel Sausage / Tomato Sauce; the sausage was excellent and also home made. Next in line with the Bolognese sauce.
The first lunch I had from the re-opened kitchen was probably the least interesting by comparision, but still certainly not "bad":
- Cream of Spinach soup (which didn't have much character) and Hamburger (decent patty, but otherwise unremarkable save for the bread it was served on)
From a service standpoint there is still a lot of new staff, with associated kinks to work out - the manager is very outgoing though, throwing greetings and salutations around (in Italian) with great abandon.
With a little more polish and more experienced staff, it would tip to four stars for me pretty quickly.

My husband and I tried the sandwiches at San Benito house after reading all the rave reviews here on yelp. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted with the most incredible smell of fresh bread - it definitely had our mouths watering. But sadly, we didn't find the food to be that impressive. Maybe it was a classic case of a place being simply over hyped and thus our expectations were sky high.. I don't know.
It's not bad, but not great either.

Oh my God, do I ever love sammies...they are simply the world's most perfect food. Bunch of yummy stuff slapped between two pieces of freshly baked bread? I'm so there.
The San Benito House has incredibly tasty sandwiches, so much so that I drag my hubby here every other weekend to get one. You can smell the bread before you even get to the door...and when you taste it, it's sweet and tender...like me!
But I'm getting off the point...which is this place ROCKS! Not just sandwiches rock, oh no...their potato salad, soups...everything ROCKS.
And it gets even better! They have take away meals (various pastas, main courses) that you can re-heat at home, serve to unsuspecting guests, and claim as your own creation...neat, huh!
So take your loved one, hop in your car and drive over to Half Moon Bay. Get your dee-licious sammies, find a nice beach and devour them. It makes for a pretty awesome day!

We didn't stay here ( of course if you read my Half Moon Bay Inn review), we didn't even EAT here. We had drinks before dinner, BUT:
+ the STRONGEST and BEST DIRTY MARTINI I have ever had. Better than Simon's in Sacto ( sorry, simon). scott said, " honey it looks like that's all anyone is or
+ they had a house (?) blues band. hard working and a whole lotta fun.
BIG PLUS: around 5:30/6p the regulars start filtering in. it was a weekday, so you can tell it was an after work hang out. people watching tops: fendi/betsey johnson purse carrying women to bikers (real ones, not weekend warrior types) hitting on aforementioned women. tops.

Best sandwiches you will ever have in your life!! The bread is thick and delicious. I heart this place!!!!
The San Benito House is by far the one of the best sandwich spots around.
The bread is fresh, homemade, and the aroma is fantastic. The staff are super friendly and will make items to order, just as you wish. This is great for those picky people who hate/love mustard, mayo, etc.
They are open for lunch 11-3. There is almost always a line, but for the best sandwich around, I'll wait.
Sit outside when it's sunny, or drive to the beach and enjoy the ocean.
Wow, this place is amazing.

I am so lucky I don't have a lover over on the coast, cuz I already spend way too many long lunches out here from my Burlingame workplace! Seriously - I think San Benito is my new boyfriend...
I frequent HMB enough but for some reason have never been to this deli attached to the San Benito House.
They had a new type of bread on their menu - aside from their Sourdough or Whole Wheat. And like any new experience, I welcomed it with open arms & mouth (um, don't take that the wrong way). I had the Cheese and Avocado on "Olive Walnut" bread. The BEST bread ever. Just check out my pics and I think you'll know what I mean. It was so hearty and fresh and sumptuous - I didn't need any chips or a drink - I was in sandwich heaven.
Service was super-friendly and efficient. And their outdoor area and deck are incredibly spacious and well-maintained. I hold back on 5-starring just anyone on Yelp, but this is a close one. I'd give up that 5th star if they had better hours to accommodate my dinner/late night sandwich cravings. I'll see you soon, San Benito house.

Once in my life I was a saleswoman with a territory that brought me to Half Moon Bay. I went out of my way to have lunch at the San Benito House as often as possible. The bread is awesome. A sandwich from this place is like few others. The soups have always been great too. Pair up great food with a cute little outdoor place to eat and you have one of the best places to lunch on this planet.
Addendum as of March 13, 2008. One of my clients is getting married here in the very near future and has informed me that the place has been sold to a new owner. Let's see what happens.

San Benito House is your stop on the coast for one of the best sandwiches around. They bake their own bread and it tastes divine. You then get an outstanding array of very fresh ingredients - romaine lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and beautiful carved meats and fine cheeses. I often go for the warm pastrami sandwich or turkey- both top notch.
The homemade soups are also excellent- check out the freezer for on excellent make your own raviola with soup meal.
Ive been eating here about 11 years and ticking.

I am eating a huge slab of the wheat bread and I type this right now! Excellent food and it's amazing how the one lady (and maybe a helper) can have your sandwich ready for you by the time you open your wallet to pay...how does she do that?! Amazing sandwiches and the potato soup was great too...I can't wait to go back for the mushroom soup! OH, and the potato salad is great as well, red potatoes and no eggs!
Seriously, I'm not big on bread but I am wolfing down this piece!
On the ground floor of this B&B there is a little sandwich stop. Its pretty basic. Pick your meat, pick one of two types of breads, and tell them "what you dont want on it". Sounds simple right. This place makes their own fesh bread. It is about an inch thick and just delicious. It smells great and you can smell it just walking by the place.
WE ordered sandwiches, and took them to go to the beach. Other than seeing good yelp reviews prior to purchasing, we didnt know what we had until we were sitting on the beach. Oh my god. Who would have thought a turkey sandwich on wheat bread with mayo, mustard, pickles, and lettuce would taste so good. The bread is some of the best sandwich bread I have ever had. What a treat!!
The patio was nice and we would have eaten down there, but the beach just seemed like a better spot for a picnic.
The line can be long, but the service is quick, they have 2-4 people behind that counter bustin butt.
These sandwiches rock. BIG FRESH & DELICIOUS. Throw a dart at the menu board, you can't miss a winner. Had to wait 30 minutes on line to get ours but well worth it.

Simply put?
The best damn sandwiches in the world. I've gone to delis that other people CLAIM make the best sandwiches... and they don't even come close. Not. Even. Close.
I think the secret is probably the bread.
I'm just sorry that I don't care to try anything else on their menu. Because if I walk in there, there's no way in hell I'd be leaving without a sandwich in my hand. Okay, so it happened once or twice when I wanted soup instead. I recommend that too.
Parking is plentiful, but if you eat there, expect to do it outside. If you have more than 5 or 6 people with you it could become a problem because seating is fairly limited. Unfortunately they don't accept credit cards. I'm pretty sure they used to because I seem to forget this every time I walk in there.
darling little place to stay! ok, so i didn't stay the night, we rented a couple of their rooms to set up for a photo shoot, but the decor and the ambiance was absolutely adorable!
the staff was extremely nice and accomodating. will definitely make it a point to stay the night, the next tim i'm in half moon bay!
the sandwiches are awesome, by the way.

It was not the review for the food, but for service.
I walked into the restaurant and asked a server whether they were open. It was around 2:00 pm, so I don't want to bother them if they were closed. The guy said.. we are open.. then he told my party to sit down any place....
So.. people at the bar seemed to be happy, and my friends and I decided to sit down... then..... 10 minutes.. nobody came to our table!!!! Finally, we just walked out the restaurant and ate some sandwiches in other locations.
3 servers were wandering around in less than 10 tables... What's wrong with those guys??????? If you want to go there, GOOD LUCK WITH SERVICE!
AMAZING SANDWICHES!!! They're big, fresh and delicious. I tried both the wheat bread and the olive walnut bread--they're made fresh at the San Benito House, and they're definitely very tasty. The place is very small, and the line was a bit long. However, there's a really nice picnic table area out front where you can sit and watch people walk up and down Main Street. If you're in Half Moon Bay, I definitely recommend trying the sandwiches here.
Manager and staff very welcoming. It's clean. A good deal for the dollar - but zero frills.
Best sandwich in the bay area with homemade super thick squaw bread. There's a special, secret garden close by that most folks don't know about. I don't want to take away that feeling of when one discovers something magical, so I'll leave it to you, but you can enjoy your lunch there surrounded by beauty.

The San Benito House is a great place on many levels. Probably the best sandwiches in the bay area during the day and a nice quiet coastal bar at night. It's also a B and B, but I've never stayed there. I have had many sandwiches and had a couple, okay MANY pints at the bar. There is also live music on Thursday and Friday nights there. Get your sandwich on the whole wheat, but also buy a loaf of the walnut/olive bread. Toast it and dip it in a little olive oil and just try and tell me I steered you wrong!

As a local, I make a stop here at least once a week for these delicious sandwiches. I'm hopelessly addicted to their Cheese and Avocado sandwich on wheat bread. The seating out back is very relaxed and semi-private, the perfect place to find a nook with your sweetheart and enjoy a fantastic lunch.
Sandwiches are around $6, and they are now open from 10am-5pm.
LOVE LOVE LOVE eating here. soooo yummy and i would travel hours for the bread..... very awesome very memorable to the coast... thank you
Best sandwich bread I've ever had. The thick slices of homemade bread have the perfect mix of substance and airiness. What's in the sandwich is nothing special, so don't expect too much. Also, a little overpriced for a sandwich...
Ok so they have choices in the bread - they have an Olive bread that just awesome, They do make great sandwiches, salads I would 'forget about it' not the place for that. You can grab your lunch though and go into the bar next door (same building just walk down the hall) and have lunch under the big moosehead, bar has lot of charactor.

Damn, I need to get out there for lunch apparently. I was just going to say we stopped by the bar before a dinner reservation and they were swamped from a holiday event in town but they took good care of us anyway. Our waitress was a friend of the staff who was just helping out, which I thought was very cool, and she brought me a great Irish coffee on a cold night when I was feeling rather sleepy. Awesome.
We love this place! The fresh baked bread really makes the sandwiches. They also have great soups and brownies. "Dining in" means in their outdoor courtyard just adjoining the small deli corner of the historic San Benito House Hotel. Eating here is a great Half Moon Bay experience.
