15 reviews for San Antonio Bar & Grill
We made the mistake of thinking that the movie 2012 would not be sold out. What is it with America and bad apocalyptic movies? (we knew it would be bad)
Regardless, enter Ruby Tuesdays, which was half full and thought we would be seated immediately, right? WRONG. 40 minute wait. Exit Ruby Tuesday.
Enter San Antonio Grill on the OTHER side of the IMAX theater. No wait.
Large space, fairly quiet, most people are into their conversation and/or their food (my kind of crowd). My boyfriend ordered a yummy salad with apples, pears, shrimp and cranberries (my kind of salad!). My caesar salad was good, as was my rice and marinated strip steak. Not the best but certainly not the worst.
Was seated quick, chips came out quick (and their salsa has a bit of kick!), waiter came out quick, food came out quick. We ate it quick (to catch the next showing) and got the check quick.
For some reason, I guess because of the exterior, I expected bad service. You just get this feeling about bad service. But our service was speedy, efficient and our drinks were filled when almost empty. Whew! Check came in and it was 30 bucks for 2 people (which is cheap to me, coming from New York).
A good way the pass the time if waiting for a movie and I think, the previous bad reviews of service must be the same two (one?) guys. I hope they are fired and I'm glad it wasn't my guy.
The End.
Hmm .... the bar is sooooo soo smokey, but there are great happy hour specials (at the bar only).
The food is hit or miss here. My boyfriend had a really good steak fajita (although to me it tasted like it was marinated in soy sauce) and I had a really really underwhelming chicken chimichanga with no flavors. The steak fajita was good but small for the price paid (I think it was $22).
I really like their guacamole which is served with chunky salsa and piles of cheese.
Ugh. I really debated on giving this place one star but I've decided to be generous and go with two.
So R and I were in the area to see UP in 3D at the iMAX theater nearby. R had suggested buying tickets in advance but I didn't think that was necessary. Well...we get to the theater and the showing had sold out. I had an angry R on my hands. So I hoped and prayed that maybe some margaritas and maybe some Southwestern fare would cheer him up.
I had bookmarked this place a while ago and was aware of the mostly poor ratings but thought it was worth a shot anyway just to see for ourselves. Since I was trying to redeem myself to R you better believe I was hoping we'd get lucky with this place. We did not.
We entered and it was on the quiet side, although we were there a little early for dinner so it didn't seem unusual. We headed for the bar and took our seats. Two bartenders were behind the bar but their eyes were glued to the replay of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Since there weren't many patrons the place was on the quiet side but the bartenders never turned to look to see if there were any new customers or if the folks already at the bar needed anything. We waited a good 5 or so minutes and R was getting pretty irritated. He said "Excuse me mate, could we get some drinks?". The bartender was pretty startled. That can't be a good sign.
The bartender came over and asked what we wanted. We weren't offered menus. Since we were looking to try out their margaritas I said, "What's your best margarita?" The bartender just shrugged at me. I replied, "Okay, I'll just take a regular margarita then". He went over to one of those drink mixer machines that you normally see at Auntie Anne's that's mixing lemonade or some other fruit drink. He filled a glass with the contents of the machine and put it in front of me.
I have never seen anything like this in my life before! The margarita was poor. Worst one I've ever had. It was watery and I don't think there was any tequila in it. I believe R ordered a beer. He mostly orders bottles so he was fine with his beer.
The bartenders went back to ignoring everyone and watching TV. The rest of the waitstaff just sort of lingers around aimlessly. We were never asked if we needed anything else, or wanted any food. We finished our drinks, paid our bill and promptly left.
I don't plan on ever wasting anymore of my time or money on this place again.
I went here on Cinco de Mayo, and I was really dissapointed on pretty much every front. The food isn't all that bad, It's good, but it's not anything to write home about, or for that matter yelp about. The drinks are cold, the prices for alcohol are about average for Alexandria, and it's ridiculously close to a movie theater and where I work. That ends the good things about this place.
The bad stuff, The service is simply abysmal, they don't seem to get that if you do separate checks (and i've had this happen a few times), you can't just stick all the things you can't figure out where they go on a communal bill for a few of the people here and there and stick the people in the group that don't leave early. I've ordered things that I've never received, but still got charged for the item... just avoid it, unless you've got no place else to go.
I have had good experiences here in the past, but then, I am beginning to feel it's a fluke.
I really try to only give one stars reviews to the worst of the worst. This came amazingly close to that one star. I dropped by here to get a bite to eat before seeing the Watchmen and I wish I hadn't.
The salsa is closer to ketchup than actual salsa. Queso, more like nacho cheese. I ordered the Plato Azteca which is a chile relleno, beef enchilada and chicken tamale. The tamale texture was more like gritty gelaten, the chile relleno was far too sweet and the enchilada lacked any kind of taste. An overall all complete disappointment. Any of the other restaruants nearby the theatre would have been a better choice.
I left and found out that my IMAX showing had been sold out so the party that met up with me all wanted to go back here (I had eaten there, they had not) to grab a beer. I presented an ID to the waitress when I ordered a beer and she flipped it over and back close to 8 times and looked incredibly confused. After a good 30 seconds of staring at my ID, I told her where the birthdate was located, she looks back and says, "I do this everyday, I know where it is."
Just trying to help, lady.
The wretched food and poor service combined can only mean I'll never be stepping foot into this establishment ever again.
I have to agree with the other reviewers about San Antonio's service - it's just not there. Literally. I've been there twice (everyone deserves a second chance, right?) and both times the service was about the worst I've ever experienced.
The last time I was there our server simply stopped coming around after my table received it's food. We ran out of drinks - odd considering that his tip is based on our total - ran out of water and just gave up. After waiting for 15 minutes for our bill I found the waiter playing one of those video slot machine things on the bar.
The food isn't terrible but not anything that would compel me to try my luck again. The drinks, particularly the margaritas are overpriced and skimp on the tequila.
Definitely avoid.
We went here for their "Fried Ice Cream" and Drinks. I had a peach margarita which was really yummy. The waitress suggest the MEGA margarita cause they put more alcohol in them. Well it taste peachy but not so much on the alcohol part like she raved about. My girl - friend had ordered the Fried Ice Cream and complained that the ice cream was super cold it was more like a frozen ball of ice cream with fried layer on top. The beers are cheap $4 for a modelo!
I dont like tex mex food so we didnt eat anything else. Oh and their Chips & Salsa dip watch out they pack alot of heat in the dip!
Not a huge fan of the food, but that's more a reflection of how I feel about tex-mex. I've been here a half dozen times, mostly waiting for a movie to start up or happy hour. Happy hour drinks are cheap and generous, the place can accommodate a large crowd easily. I've had great service, both in large groups and when hanging out on my own having a few drinks.
As a bar, I'd give this place 5 starts, but because I don't care for tex-mex, I had to bump it down...
Ugh.
Given the limited options for lunchtime dining, I've ended up here on more than one occasion. The food is edible. The service is abysmal. We've hit the bar for happy hour a couple of times, and the bartender seemed bothered by having to serve a few people.
Two things on the plus side - the chips and salsa are delicious, and gratis! They are easy to eat too many of. (But pace yourself, once you finish off the salsa it will be a few eons before a waiter comes by again .) And the steak fajitas were quite tasty!
Being from San Antonio myself...I'm embarrased to see the name they've chosen. This place is an absolutely horrible experience. I haven't seen service this bad since since Dr. Kovorkean last visited my second cousin...who still with us.
The drinks are probably safe, but the food is some of the worst TexMex I've had since I vacationed in Scandanavia. Looking for a margarita before your movie...check it out...looking for ANYTHING CLOSE to TexMex...your better served by heading to Taco Bell!!! Now...THAT'S a sad state of affairs!!!
The below average food did not make up for the cockroach on the wall next to us.
If you're looking for a good place to hang out until your movie starts at the AMC 22 in Alexandria, this is the place. The restaurant is clean, service is good, and so too is the food. Try either the Plato Azteca or Plato Maya. Contrary to the Yelp info...this place IS open on Sundays from 11am to 10pm.
Went here last week because its right next to the AMC movie theater, and I must say I was satisfied. Its standard tex-mex, not great, i think the austin grill is better, but this one sure is convenient if you want to go to the movies after! Hard to beat the 2.75 margaritas during happy hour :)
Quesadillas, wings, and beers after a movie here is pretty damn good! Not sure about the other food though.
I do like like tex mex the food here is good
the staff is sometimes hard to get ahold of
the alcohol starts and very good and can be great if you order the top shelf stuff.
I think they have a very wide selection but I've only ever been in here between 5-9 pm or so waiting on movies.
A strike against them and not exactly thier fault on this one but the parking in that area all just went to paid parking, mostly garage, but some open lot.
