SAM ADAMS- A Bostonian, a Patirot, AND some awesome beer.

First off all cheers for being practically the last major domestic beer. Don't EVER sell out...thank you...hem hem.

This is their R&D facility so it's pretty darn small. Our tour was headed by Chris, who by the end of the trip we were calling BISON, not because he looked like one, but because we had just had beer for breakfast. I wish they'd given us more maybe he would have been named moose by the end of that happy trip....

Tour's awesome. Tasting's awesomer. Did someone say free "juice" glass. Coming back for sure....I need a set.

Free booze = 5 stars, right?

We took the orange T out to Jamaica Plain and quickly found the brewery only 3 blocks away. For some reason, I thought tours ended at 5 on weekdays. Oh wow, the last tour this Monday was at 3! Luckily for us, it was 2:45!

So, the tours are supposed to be 45 minutes but because it's the last tour, they weren't rushing us and an hour and half later, we left the brewery in dire need of food. I love that they give you directions to find their nearby restaurants which of course serve Sam Adams on tap.

The tour itself is pretty brief. You learn beer is made from four things; hops, barley, water and yeast. There's some smelling of the hops and barley. You can eat some of the barley but advised to just crush the hops for the smell. Then it's off to the tanks to learn how beer is made there. Since this brewery is where they do all their R&D, it's not really a big place. Most of the Sam Adams you get elsewhere is brewed from two other plants.

Then the moment you've been waiting for arrives. Beer!

We were led into a room, given glasses and the pouring commenced. Our tour guide, Mike, was a great guide. Gave lots of information and still was informative up to the last drop. He just passed the bar but still plans to work at the brewery. I guess it's that fun!

We tried the famous Boston Lager, the beer that kicked off the brewery, a holiday one that was hitting the market in the next couple of weeks and then a fruity one from the summer before that was apparently never sold on tap but we got to try it that way. We then learned the importance of cleaning out your tap lines.

There's a gift shop for all your Sam Adams logo items including a beer carry-all coozie. That was kind of neat, actually. And you can buy special kegs there. But you'd need a car for that because I doubt you want to lug it onto the train. In any case, they'll give you addresses of liquor stores in the city that carry their brand as well.

Best part of the tour? Free! Oh wait, I said that in the beginning. Just give 'em a couple of bucks for charity which they collect in bins at check-in and at the start of the tour.

So much fun...free beer and good friends make for a great afternoon

They have the Boston lager, brick red and cherry wheat on tap

Lots of fun if you like beer...and its FREE

PS...if you like the new tulip glasses you don't have to buy one in the gift shop, go to doyle's after, tell them you went on the tour, order a sammy a and the glass is yours.  And Doyle's has pretty good food and beverages

Add another four to the pile. Nice but short tour of the little brewery. Best part is the tasting room. Three free samples of beer and you get to keep the glass afterwards. Hurrah!

Meh. They allow such a large group of people in each tour, that I couldn't see the host. The host talked about how the beer was made, gave some history, tried to keep everyone's mind off of the beer they were looking forward to consuming. They passed around some hops and barley to taste or smell, which was kind of cool. After that, the group went into a cafeteria to sit down and await the pitchers. They only allowed a taste of three different beers. I like the setting, but I just really wanted to taste some beer. I think Harpoon may be a better option for me.

Went on the tour a few years ago and it was amazing. For a small donation you get a world class tour of the facility. At the time we were aloud to have a tasting where you get small samples of 5 beers. If they still do this i would love to go back

How could you not give this FREE tour five stars? They dont charge you a thing and they dont skimp on quality. Geat tour guides, great staff and a really informative talk on the brewing process.
I showed up this past RAINY sunday with a couple of NY visitors who were dying to go to the brewery. We were severely hung over and not expecting the THRONGS of people that were inside when we arrived. I dont know why I didnt expect a crowd... it was pouring rain outside in Boston leaving people wondering what they could do with their Saturday afternoon. Free beer? Suuuuuure. Why not.
Our cute little redhead tour guide took us around and taught us all about the Sam Adams brewing process and then led us into the tasting room.. that looks like a beer hall. We tried 3 different kinds of beer and had a great time.
Word to the wise... show up and grab your tickets but expect a wait. Go down the block to Doyles and kill some time while you wait.
Additionally... would like to give a shout out to the adorable guy in the Red Sox hat on staff there that was at the front desk in the beginning of our wait and then leaving the tasting room when our tour came in. If I hadnt felt like I was gonna die right there in the lobby from my hangover, I woulda said hi : )

This is one of my favorite places to bring out of town guests.  Waits for tours can be a bit long, and the surrounding area is a little shady, so get there early to arrive having to hang out in what can only be called the ghetto.

The beginning of the tour can only be described as disappointing.  Well, not the part where it's free (plus a $2 donation to a charity).  That's pretty great.  I mean the part where you learn that Sam Adams is not actually brewed in Boston.  WHAT?  How can that be?  This brewery is just for development and testing purposes?  That's crazy talk.  Depending on the guide you get the tour is either a fun 20 minutes or an excruciating wait for the free beer.

You are then led to the free beer room, which is set up to look like a cute little pub.  They have different seasonal Sam's on tap and they show you how to properly pour and taste a Sam's which is kind of fun.  One time they were tasting a coffee stout that my husband really liked.  Beer is plentiful, and if you're not a beer drinker (like me) they'll give you IBC Root Beer so you can pretend like you're playing along too.

At the end, they let you take the cute little Sam Adam's tasting glasses to take home.  My husband and I now have a complete set that we use as juice glasses.

The gift shop that the tour lets you out into is pretty awesome.  I love a good gift shop, and this one does not disappoint.  Anything you can think of they sell, and everything is reasonably priced.

This brewery is super personal and quaint. It's a reminder of the spirit of small businesses and it's fabulous.

The brewery tour only takes an hour and they explain a good deal about their beer brewing and operations...then the good part starts...BEER TASTING!

While they don't sell beer at the brewery, they do let you taste test three of their beers on tap.

The "docent" was really personable and funny.

The tour was a good time, and who doesn't want some free beer?

I kind of am writing this review for my husby since he loves this place more than...not me - I wasn't going to say that!

Anyway, whenever someone new comes to visit, we inevitably make our windy way down this shady lane to arrive at free beer, I mean the Sam Adam Brewery tour.  You never have to wait for very long and the tour guides are always tipsy.  They slur their words and talk quickly because they understand the real reason people show up.  It's not to watch the video, see the many accolades, taste/smell the ingredients (one person actually said "rain" instead of water when given a clue that this ingredient falls from the sky...cut off), or to walk around the big canisters.  We all want one thing and one thing only, our free glass with beer in it.

I love how fresh the beer tastes, even at 11am in the morning when I don't want any.  They always give you 3 different brews and if you place yourself strategically at the table, more than one glass per pitcher can be managed.

By the way, please donate some money.  It's not required (hence donation) but it goes to a good cause.  Plus you get BEER.

Five stars because I find it difficult to give anything less to a place that shows you how to make beer and then hands out free, fresh samples.

Informal, yet informative tour through the historic brewery. Ends with four different pours in the tasting room. They always have their seasonals on tap, too. Not much better than Sam Summer that has only been in existence for a few days and was brewed just a few steps from where you're drinking it.

SAM ADAMS BREWERY TOUR GUIDE: "This is our Boston Lager. Before you taste, please smell the beer. What does it smell like?"

RANDOM GUY 1: "Smells like hops"

RANDOM GUY 2: "Smells like the back of my truck"

(Tasting room erupts in laughter.)

(Laughter stops after 1 minute when everyone realizes that RANDOM GUY 2 was serious and not laughing).

The tour consists of two parts: boring part and the beer tasting part. (NOTE: This is a free tour. You get a free tasting cup)

The boring is when they talk about the brewing process (pre-beer tasting). The fun part is actually tasting the beers. I am normally not a fan of Sam Adams or his beer. However, the beers we taste are made on location and are superb. You can TASTE the freshness. During the tasting, you are given three kinds of beers:

1. Boston Lager (the OG beer)

2. Seasonal Beer (whatever season we are in)

3. Experimental Beer (beers they are playing with)

The people that show up are laid back, beer lovers and girls who hand out their numbers after 1 drink (NOTE TO THE GIRL WHO GAVE ME HER NUMBER: I lost your number. I was thinking of posting this yelp review on "Missed Connections" but I don't remember your face, where you were from, your hair type, or even your gender.. though I'm sure you were a girl).

INSIDER TIP ON HOW TO GET MORE FREE BEER THAN THE OTHERS: Sit at the end of any of the tables, farthest from the bar. The pitchers of beer will come to you last, but you will have so much more beer to drink than the other people. Just don't feel guilty doing it.

I've been to brewery tours that are worse, and been to some that are far better. This place ranges in the middle (unless you are already a Sam Adams fan, then you will love it). Our tour guide, Nick, was great! Very informative, and entertaining. After you learn about the brewing process, you get to try 3 small samples of beer:

1) Boston Lager
2) Seasonal Beer (Octoberfest currently)
3) Brick Red

Definitely sit at the end of a table, we did, and we usually got to finish off the pitchers. If you are looking for a better brewery tour type thing, try the beer tastings at Harpoon Mon-Fri, or the Harpoon tour on the weekends.

Good people + good beer = good tour.

If you want to learn about what happens on the tour just read the other reviews because I can't really say anything that hasn't already been said.

I will, however, offer you this bit of advice: If you're there in the afternoon, don't buy the Sam Adams glasses from the gift shop.

Take your ticket and hop on the free shuttle they have going to Doyle's and then use the ticket (which is actually a label) to get a free glass when you order a Sam Adams at the bar. For $5 you get beer and a glass, instead of paying $8 at the gift shop for a glass with no beer.

We ended our day drunk, full, and happy, with 3 Sam Adams glasses and 4 tasting glasses to boot. Doesn't get much better than that.

If you're a fan of beer, go on this tour.

Quite possibly the best experience I could ask for in a brewery. There is a $2 donation that goes 100% to charity. They give you a beautiful Samuel Adams glass and let you try a beer that they are experimenting and is not out.

I came to Boston for the day from NYC. This is a must stop. I plan on coming back again next week. It's so neat to see the brewery and hear how they make the beer.

The tour lady was really cool.

This is a great activity for a lazy weekend and a perfect place to bring out-of-towners. Honestly, how can one say anything negative about seeing the inside of a brewery, a free souvenir glass and free beer?? It's a pretty short but informative and fun tour of this brewery. The tour groups themselves can make for great entertainment and the beer really does taste better at the source. The brewery is tucked away in a little corner of JP but close enough to Center Street so that you really can make a nice afternoon of a tour preceded or followed by lunch or more drinking at a local pub.

I have toured 3 other breweries and I will say that this was the most fun brewery tour I have been on yet. They do a good job of explaining the brewing process and showing how Sam Adams is different from other breweries. The tasting at the end is a great time, especially because it is done German beer hall style and pitches of Sam Adams beer are passed around. If you wanted to get drunk at the end of this tour, you could probably pull it off.

Best part of the whole thing: it's ALL free.

I like good beer and it was cool to visit one of the biggest craft breweries in the US. This location is a bit out of the way, but worth the trek. There is a free brewery tour and then ends in a bar where the samples flow like water. This was the only brewery I've been to where they let you sample the hops, barley, etc. We sampled some great beers and got to keep the cute mini Sam Adams glass. The tour ends in the gift shop and me being a sucker for glasses, I bought the "Perfect Pint" glass for under $10...it is an awesome glass. While the tour is free, the donations go to a good local organization (forget which one). Keep an eye out for Jim Koch...he was walking around the joint.

The samples:
-Boston Lager - clear and hoppy
-Summer Ale - hint of citrus
-Boston brick red (available only on tap)

A few weeks ago I was showing some out-of-towners the town and we had to make a stop here.  On a weekend in the summer you will have to wait for a while (30min-1hr) for the free tour, but that's just because it's the perfect place to be on a hot summer day.

The free hour long tour is split between a half an hour of learning and a half an hour of tasting.  The learning part is kind of neat.  You get to smell and taste different kinds of hops and all of the tour guides tell the same jokes and you learn when the different flavors are added to some of the beers.  The warehouse is kind of wet and loud and doesn't actually brew very much beer, but it's still neat.  The tasting part was surprisingly generous, especially for a free tour.  Everyone receives a free small glass which you can fill to the brim several times and even refill if you're sneaky.  We tried three different beers; Boston Lager, Sam Summer, and Brick Red Ale.  I wouldn't consider myself a beer drinker but this tour kind of converted me!  I actually loved the first two beers we tried and even ordered a Sam Summer at dinner a few nights ago.

It's good free fun for tourists and locals.  There's also an overpriced gift shop where you can pick up some Sam Adams merch and there's a free trolly to a pub down the street where if you buy a pint and show your tour "ticket" (actually a bottle label) you get to keep a souvenir cup.  More free stuff = awesome!

Okay, I have to admit, I've taken the tour four times and with my friends coming up for a visit from Los Angeles in a few days, it will soon be five times.

In establishing a general philosophy for Yelp review writing I've aimed to almost never give out five stars. Five stars is not something you should be haphazardly giving out like hugs and high-fives; doing so will devalue that apogee of review scores.

That being said, when I think about the negatives of the Sam Adams Brewery, I come up blank. Essentially, it costs zero moneys (although donations are encouraged) you get a free glass, and you get a generous helping of the freshest beer around. Whether you're a big fan of their brews or you're like me and merely consider it a decent staple beer thats dependably on tap, there's no way you can deny that this will most likely be the freshest beer you'll ever drink.

Now, I've never really been impressed with those signs some drinking establishments have proclaiming that they have "the coldest beer around."
So what? Not all beer is optimized cold and I've always felt that what they should be saying is "the freshest beer around" because I am definitely not a fan of old skunky beer that's been festering in tap lines for ages. There's a huge difference in taste between skunky beer and fresh beer, and that's why Sam is a good standard, because its brewed locally and is almost always fresh. I had a pint of Sam at an airport in Chicago once, it just wasn't the same.

The freshest and tastiest Sam you'll get is at the brewery, and its free.

The great thing about the tour is that they recently restructured it so now its half as long. They cut out everything in the staging room with the video intro of Jim Koche and generally give that information out casually while you're enjoying your brews at the end. I appreciate this. They know what you came for and its the beer.

The first time I visited the brewery I was blown away with how generous they were with the beer. I went in expecting them to give out stingy and well-measured portions. Nope. They pass around full pitchers that often times require teamwork and extra helpings to make disappear.

Then there is also the fact that since you're sitting in the "experimental brewery" (the one where they create all the new brews) you get to sample beers that the public might never get to taste. This is kind of hit or miss, however, the first time I visited I tasted an insanely-hoppy beer that made everyone put on their bitter-face. More recently, I was impressed with the Brick Red which is only available in select bars in Boston, and got a whiff of an empty bottle of the $125, 27% alcohol "Uptopia." It smelled pretty much like Macallan's Amber Scotch, honestly (so tasty, btw).

I really don't find the prices at the gift store to be unfair. Come on, guys, they just gave you a rad-ton of free beer, you can pay $15 for a shirt if you really want one.

Honestly, the only negative that I can possible think of is the fact that its rather far down on the orange line, but that's not enough to take away a star. To the people down at the Sam Adams Brewery in Stony Brook I say good form.

BEST BREWERY TOUR THAT I HAVE EVER BEEN ON! I couldn't believe that this tour was FREE! (They do ask that you make a $2 donation to a charity). Even before we went on the tour, we received free beer, as we did a "which beer is your favorite" tasting. The tour was very entertaining as our tour guide educated us about beer and was very witty and humorous. Some parts were a little boring but the taking is short. The best part of the tour is at the end where we do the tasting. First, you get to keep the glass you drink out of. You also get to taste 3 different types of beer. Pitchers of the beer are passed around your table and you just keep filling your cup up until the pitchers are empty. The brewery isn't greedy with their beer, they are more concerned that you have fun; which i definitely did!

Is it a conflict of interest if I heart beer?
what about if Samuel Adams is my favorite beer??
if possible, I would consider Sam Adams beer my BFF.

Tour is kewl. They are FREE and run continuously throughout the day. On the tour, they give you your own souvenir glass (etched with their logo and a quirky line about the beer) and you are on your way to the tasting room. They typically serve three different beers, and at least one of them is their seasonal brew.... yuuuummm-meee.

That reminds me... I gotta plan myself a trip to Boston asap!
Gotta go my fellow yelpers :)

Took a tour there a couple of years ago and had a great time with my friends. The tours are free although a $2 donation is recommended, and goes to charity.

When we first walked in, we were invited to taste and test a couple of samples of possible beers they were experimenting with and vote for our favorite one. We even got a pin which represented the one we voted for. Pretty cool! We got all excited and stormed in for the tour.

It was a very complete tour that explained the entire brewing process and they also got you to smell and taste the various grains involved.

Then came the best part... Tasting! Free tasting I might add. They have an entire replicated bar at the end of the tour where they passed up a dozen or so pitchers to the crowd. The staff cracked a few jokes, it was a ton of fun. The tour ended as we made our way to the gift store.

Note that I got to see the bearded guy from the advertisement on TV. You know, the really big, chubby guy with the beard. That was kind of cool.

The only downside to it is that I don't recommend you go on the tour on a hot day because it was really humid and muggy inside the brewery and that kind of sucked but we got over it eventually once they pored us a few brewskies.

Free Beer. And they will make sure to tell you that it is the only reason why you are there.

Right down the street from us, this is a regular stop whenever friends or family are in town. The jokes can be a little overdone and the tour is super-scripted, but the beer is great. My first time on the tour was my first Sam Adam's Lager ever. I'm not a huge big fan; like one lady commented today "It's ok. I like lighter beers better".  So, I do appreciate  that the other two beers you get to sample are constantly changing. Today it was the Octoberfest (very tasty) and the Boston Brick Red (only available in Boston!).

If you don't mind some of the lame jokes, and can enjoy the free 21oz of beer you are served it worth a weekend visit. While you wait for your tour stop by Ula's -- mmm, mmm, good.

I've been here twice and both times found it pretty enjoyable.

The first time was with my sister and we went during the winter.  The tour was informative, but when you have a group of people looking forward to beer, it can seem like it takes forever.  If you're not interested so much in the process, people tend to zone out.  But it is really interesting to me how it's made and when they pass out the ingredients.

The second time I went in the summer, and it was much more crowded.  The tour also seemed to go a lot faster because again, I think people just want to get to the beer tasting.  I had a woman in front of me that was always trying to taste the ingredients.  They tell you to do that, so it's cool that she wanted to, but she would decide after she passed the cup of hops or barely around.  Then we had to see if we could get it back for her to taste.  Really not that good anyway!

Both times the tasting went about the same.  FREE BEER!  Everyone is excited, but someone always doesn't like at least one of the beers they hand out.  In the winter it was a very very dark chocolate beer that people weren't too excited by.  Then in the summer it was a citrus flavored one.  These are beers that they are testing out and they said something like 2 out of all the ones they try out in a year might make it.  So of course there are going to be a lot of these ones that the majority of people don't like.  The basic Boston Lager and their seasonal or Light is always served and those are great!

It's a fun place to take people, but make sure you like different kinds of beer!  If you just like light beer, you'll take one sip and then pour your beer into your friends glass.

Free beer? Sounds like a good time to me. I heard about this tour from my boyfriend, and figured we would check it out one fine Saturday afternoon. I'm a huge fan of Sam Adams Beer, especially their Summer ale, so I was excited. The tour is FREE which is definitely nice in this economy when you're trying to find something fun to do without breaking the bank. The first part of the tour is kinda boring....they talk about the history of the brewery blah blah blah. But the second part consists of a free tasting, and you get a complimentary glass.  Sounds like a fun way to spend a Saturday to me.

FREE BEER

did you hear me?

21 OUNCES OF FREE BEER

yup, you read it right. FREE BEER. And they make you chant this a little bit during your tour here so get ready!! The tour is just plain awesome. Coming here made my trip to boston pretty much perfect. They ask for a donation for their charity when you go in, but for 21 ounces of beer and your own glass sampling glass to take home with you with one of the steps to tasting beer printed on it, how could a donation to a good cause not be worth it? And let's face it if you donate money to go on a drinking tour, it is kind of like donating to the cause of you drinking!

This place gets packed pretty quickly, so definitely get here earlier in the day to make sure you get into a tour group! You learn a lot about beer making and sam adams beer in particular, and the whole place is so well kept, even if it is a little randomly out of the way. TOTALLY WORTH THE TRIP!

Eventually you make it into the tasting room, where everyone sits at long drinking tables and pitchers just get passed out one-by-one and you get to try three different beers! We were lucky enough to try boston's own Boston Brick Red that was only being released on tap in boston! And being from CA that was pretty exciting to us!

CHEERS, to SAM ADAMS! and CHEERS, to FREE BEER!

Free beer, free education, and free comedy?  Not a bad way to build customer good will!  While you might have to fork over a couple dollars for "charity", it's really a cash efficient way to spend a couple hours, and you really can enjoy their beer fresh.

One really impressive piece was their more than 20% alcohol beer.  In a custom decanter, the residual fragrance was very reminiscent of a port or a madeira.  While I'd probably never buy it, the idea was awesome.

The decor itself is playful and informative.

Very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon!

I have only done the tour once so far, but it was a good time. Here is why.

-Main girl/woman giving the tour was slightly drunk (it was afternoon tour and they get free beer)
-They gave me free beer.
-My GF talked about her favorite Samuel Adams beer, but they didn't have it on tap. Instead the tour leader sent someone to go get a bunch of bottles so that we could drink it.
-Free sampling glass.
-Great people at the tour.

If you are in Boston and want to do something fun, go here.

What a great experience!  The tour guides are fun and enthusiastic, and you learn a great deal about the brewing process during the tour.  You get the opportunity to touch, smell, and sometimes even taste various individual ingredients (i.e. hops, malt, and barley) which I thought was pretty cool.  It is true what they say about the tasting in the end: you get to sit in a beer hall and pitchers of Sam Adams beers are passed all around.  So much fun!  You must take your out-of-town friends for a visit!

One of the best brewery tours I've completed, ever.  The pinnacle is at the end, with the numerous free tastings.  The Boston Lager was remarkably better than it is on tap or bottled - when it is fresh, it's like fresh bread out of your oven is to Wonder bread in the grocery store.  I couldn't believe how aromatic and flavorful the beers were.

Tour guides were friendly.  Info was just about at the right level - not too nerdy, not too dumbed down.

Location is a very short walk from the train line.

I've been here so many times for the brewery tour and always try to fit another trip in when I am back in Boston. Basically the tour is one of the best things Boston has going for it. It's a short walk from the Orange Line and for only a couple $ you can tour the brewery and try a handful of beers on tap.

Be sure you get there early though as the tours fill up quickly during the summer months and on weekends. Even though the tours can be packed, you are almost guaranteed a taste of a new beer that the head brewer has been working on. They are almost never actually bottled, so this is a great chance to try something new and say you were the first (and only to taste it).

The tour guides are usually college students and very knowledgeable about the breweries history, current production, and beer in general. When you get to the end of the tour and head into the tasting room, be sure to seat yourself at the end of a table. That way you'll get all the left over beer from the pitchers. You also get a free tasting glass!

Had a lot of fun on the tour even though I was with my gal pal who asked stupid questions. There weren't many people on the tour so we got some extra beer! The staff was nice and knowledgeable. The workers there are even willing to take picture with you.

I had a really good time. I suggest everyone try it at least once!

Visiting the Samuel Adams Brewery was definitely one of the highlights during my trip to Boston.  The tour was pretty informative and they give you a pretty massive amount of free beer at the end - three 7 oz. samples.  Enough to start your evening off right!  The tour guide was pretty informative, and told us about the whole brewing process.  The atmosphere was very collegial and strangers were chatting each other up.  They also have a pretty stocked gift shop.

My two (small) qualms about this tour were that the guide was constantly berating us that we wanted him to shut up and get to the free beer.  At first it was funny, but he started making me feel a bit guilty after a while.  I'm sure a couple people were interested in hearing about the process.  Also, tours start every hour, and if you come too early, there isn't much else to do but sit and wait.  There must be a law against this, but it would have been nice to have an actual bar on the premises so we could have a pint before starting the tour.

Overall, definitely worth a visit.  It is very easy to get to from the T, and was a great experience.
