7 reviews for Sam's Pizza
Gotta give it up for Sam's Indian food. I thought about giving it 4 stars because of the dining room (not dirty but nothing to look forward to and because you have to pay next door if you use a credit card) but truely, here in this limited desert area you'll be having the best food around.
I've grown up in Yucca and its unfortunate that only about a year ago I found out about this awesome place. I've always seen Sam's pizza but never knew they had Indian food too.
My favorite dish is the Chicken Tikka Saag with a side of the garlic Naan. I just tried the Butter Chicken the other day - ALSO amazing but not on the menu. I think I've had just about everything else on the indian menu and I love it all. My least favorite dish is the Tikka Masala because it has a red sauce that kind of reminds me of spaghetti.. and I'm not a huge 'sghetti fan. Love their basmati rice - comes with every meal!
We usually order ahead and take it home and there is always left overs.
Definately give this place a try, and I recommend trying a few different dishes to get a feel and definately the garlic naan!
The indian pizza is also amazing - LOADED with cheese and a lot of garlic -- ssssooooo yummy.
My dear friend Yelp guided us to this divine eatery in the heart of the serene and magical Mojave Desert. It was great to see desis (folks from the motherland - India) even in J Tree - I guess our breed spreads to far off, remote places!
Anyway, the place was bumpin when we reached, and the menu was so comprehensive. Craving some macaroni salad, cheese bread, korma, chole or pizza with curry sauce, topped with paneer and cilantro? This is your place then. I spoke with the owner's son when we went up to pay the bill, and as expected he mentioned Zante, the Bay Area's very own Indian pizza joint. The family borrowed a similar concept and made their own pizza creations, with a desi touch.
Ever had a waiter apologize to you for making an extra large pizza with a different sauce, and say that you can have the extra large pizza w/o charge (with the correct pizza coming too)? We were floored by the apology and even moreso boggle eyed when the two extra large pizzas - one with curry sauce and one with regular tomato sauce, were presented on our table.
It was so DAMN good! And the extra pizza lasted for about two days! Great place and highly recommend y'all peep it if you're ever in J Tree and want something different after a long ass hike, drive or down for a random culinary adventure.
In the parking lot, a bellicose sheriff shouted to his buddies, "That pizza made me want to blow chunks." Then the sheriff and his posse roared off to the highway, going about 70mph and blowing off the stop sign.
Inside, when a local dude came in and ordered 3 XL pizzas ("Just for starters," he said), the kid working the front counter sighed, and muttered "We're so busy tonight, so busy." At which point the dude almost started a fight: "What, you're complaining that you're busy? In this economy?"
So, we slunk out of the wood-paneled, white-walled dining room with zero atmosphere, taking our chicken tikka masala and sweet lassis to go. Devouring them back in our motel room, it was like food from heaven had dropped down straight into the Mojave. Great, spicy stuff.
When you walk in, just remember to pick up the folded paper menu with the Taj Mahal pic on the front. Otherwise, it might look like all they serve is pizzas and sub sandwiches. And it'd be a shame for you to miss out.
Whoda thunk, a place inappropriately named Sam's Pizza would have some of the BEST Indian food anywhere.
Seriously d'lish and authentic Indian food can be found in this ghetto J-Tree gem. The delectableness is definitely comparable to big city Indian restaurants. The meat quality is fresh, but the cut is sub par -- you won't get all white breast chicken in your vindaloo. BUT keep in mind that Indian food is intended to be cooked with less than top cut meat.
After a day of really hard climbing, Pearl and I were both starving (despite a huge packed lunch), and ended up roaming into Sam's. We had the veggie samosa (yummy), the garlic naan (mmmmm, garlic and carbs), and the chicken korma (can I please drink the sauce?)... all of which were all worthy of obsession - in fact, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's the most authentic Indian food in southern California.
The atmosphere is far from aesthetically pleasing, and there's no table service... it's set up more as a pick up fast food-esq location, but definitely worth a stop if you find yourself visiting (or climbing) J-Tree.
Highly recommend... In a town of almost no competition, this is definitely a "MUST EAT" even for big city standards.
I have only eaten the pizza here, so far. I have tried the chicken tikka and curry pizza and that was something new for me and I really liked the flavors on a pizza. I will try that again. Their pepperoni and olive pizza is good, definitely better than our local Pizza Hut and outstanding in comparison to Domino's. I also tried a spinach and artichoke pizza because they have a variety of toppings that you can't get at a chain pizza place, and that was really great! I will be trying their Indian food because looking at the reviews it seems like I've been missing out!
I was shocked and surprised to learn there was Indian food here in Joshua Tree. It was awesome- we went in hungry our first night in our new house (no pots or pans or fridge). We bought almost the whole menu I think. The chicken tikka was probably some of the best I've ever had, as well as the peshwari naan. AWESOME stuff. They don't take credit cards in the restaurant, however you can walk next door with your bill to Sam's Liquors and pay there. Also, their pizza is pretty tasty too- very inventive. This is more of a place you want to order in and eat at home because the decor leaves a lot to be desired, especially in the winter when the dining room is quite chilly.
I looked around West LA for a year and didn't find Indian Food this good. After moving to Yucca Valley I drove by this place several times and thought, there isn't any way I'm going in there. Finally a friend told me, No it's really very good. So tonight I drove over, stopped in and gave it a chance. Wow! it's not the best Indian I've had but it sure beats about 90% of what I've had. The atmosphere leaves alot to be desired, it's a Pizza Joint and it doesn't even accomplish that very well. Table service is spotty but friendly. I really recommend this place, especially if like me, you are the only one you know that likes Indian. Cause your buddies can just a get a burger or pizza.
