Take a deep breath...inhale that buttery scent of popcorn (albeit slightly stale) mixed with scents of rubber, flannel, and cotton...ahhh...you've arrived at Sam's.
Wind your way through the racks of Patagonia, Arcteryx, Vermont Flannel Company, NorthFace, Columbia and more until you come to the little connector that leads into the Carhardt section and you can help yourself to a free (and refillable) brown paper bag of popcorn...popped fresh and through-out each day.
You can find everything for your outdoor adventures at Sam's...you want boots....you got it. You want thermal underwear...you got it. How about a tent? They have a wide selection. Cross-bows, camping supplies and ski equipment? Yup - it's here, too! Want that entirely ridiculous looking ski cap with super-long fleece tubes that flaps in the wind behind you? Yes...they have a few of those as well.
Growing up in Brattleboro I bought every ski jacket, snow pants, and pair of long johns here that I can remember. And how did my parents keep me quiet during those oh-so-tedious school shopping trips? Just give this girl a bag o' popcorn!
Solid outdoor clothing (i.e. fleece) at decent prices. The smartwool socks are perennially on sale, and the upstairs area is a great area in which to begin your fleece collection, if that's something that interests you.
Friendly staff and impressive selection in a small town.
Two reguests:
1. Stock Arc'Teryx -- no one else in the town does
2. Please put less salt on the popcorn
Sam's is the best! I was looking everywhere for a pair of super light weight Patagonia capilene long underwear after my old pair got so worn out I couldn't sew the holes any more. After looking everywhere (including Kittery, ME outlets, http://Campmor.com, etc.) I had to go back to my old stomping grounds to find just what I was looking for. On sale, too!
All stores should take this lesson from Sam's: Every purchase tastes better with free popcorn!
I love Sam's. Why? Well, you can find almost everything there. They give you popcorn, for free. They have great discounts on outdoor clothing, and
they are an institution in Brattleboro, Vt.
They are what LL Bean used to be, before they got all Yuppie, and Corporate.
Every time I go through Brattleboro, I have to stop in. I always find something great in their discount racks.
Some people in this world have fake deer for decorations in their yard. Some people have fake deer to practice shooting on. This place would serve either person. They have got everything from plaid shirts to Roxy brand surfer skirts in their rambling, three floor main street shop. I especially love the plaque next to the (free!) popcorn dedicated to a late employee who loved his job and loved to hand out the popcorn. Seems to me like this is a sort of town institution and I'd be pleased to buy my yearly pair of Reef flip flops from such a place as this.
On the plus side they have a large selection of wintry items. On the downside, they are pricey. They saved me recently, though, when I left my shoes in Boston- there is a large shoe store in the basement level.
I loved this store. Lots of awesome outdoorsy clothing and equipment, and popcorn!
This store has SHOCKED me recently! Yes, all the things that I remember from child hood (long johns, the free popcorn and the skate sharpening service in the basement) remain but the inventory (particularly the women's department) is a lot, well, cooler than I remember. Expensive? Yes, but just about everthing in downtown Brattleboro is- and there were some steals on the sales rack. Scored some ultra comfy & cute underthings ala pj harvey, a rockin timbuktu bag and some roxy cords. Now if only the popcorn wasn't eternally half-stale......
Definitely a cornerstone of our town however I find that other than most equipment, clothing is a little bit over priced considering other than walmart this is where most people shop
i just go there for the popcorn and then pretend to shop.
