Review Highlights
Sam's is the classic Sunday late afternoon spot in the summer (and I mean the 6-month Bay Area summer) to wind down in the sun after a packed weekend. The chowder is piping hot if not inspired in its ingredients. The calamari is spot-on and goes well with their Bloody Mary. Come for the vibe, not fine dining!
If you're seeing a movie across the street at the Playhouse, just let them know and they can expedite your service.
+ Karma points to the staff who chased us down when we left a credit card behind
Is there any other reason to come to Tiburon? I'm not saying it's a great reason, but why does anybody come to Tiburon anyway? I think it's for that faux-New England, useless-ye-olde-shoppe vibe you get. It's a California law to have one of these tourist traps every hundred miles along the coast...Half Moon Bay, Tiburon, Mendocino... To add insult to injury, Jamie W. and I went on the Blue & Gold "Sightseeing" ferry from Fishermans' Wharf. I'm not sure when the sightseeing came in (unless they mean "There's the Golden Gate Bridge, look at it"), but it was a frickin' $19 round trip ticket when I could have just driven over.
Anyway, we made it to Sam's, and it was jam-packed at 3:30PM. It's pretty much jam-packed anytime because the deck is admittedly an inviting place on a sunny day like it was last Saturday. But what does strike you after a while is how non-diverse the customers were. As Kathy Griffin described the biological fathers of Michael Jackson's children, it was "Whitey, Whitey McGee and Whitey McWhiterson". And not just Caucasian but the rich and overly entitled type, the kind that pooh-poohs the waiter by telling him that her margarita is not good enough unless it's Top Shelf.
When we were finally seated at our table, we were surrounded by mouthy people talking about their masseuses or their boats or their masseuses on their boats. And they were continually banging their white plastic chairs (...and they are white, I swear) against mine. However, I did like the $8 bowl of Boston-Style Clam Chowder with the little bags of oyster crackers. It's the creamy-lumpy variety that I prefer...and of course, white. And I naturally had the $13 Sam's Burger, which I always liked because of the sourdough bun. The fries weren't bad either. But it's all a bit ka-ching, ka-ching.
Regardless, I gotta tell ya...not that relaxing with the crowds which certainly obscured my marina view. Sam's is truly the land of milk and honey or at least Wonder bread and Best Foods mayonnaise.
FOOD - 3 stars...good bar-type food (and I also like the Hangtown Fry Omelette when I get there earlier in the day)...but certainly pricey, obviously to match the clientele
AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars....nice on the deck on a sunny day but you still feel like you're in an elevator during rush hour
SERVICE - 3 stars...the servers are busy, and ours was a bit, shall we say, forgetful
TOTAL - 3 stars...the ultimate Tiburon experience, if there is such a thing
There is nothing better after a run or bike ride after doing the Paradise Loop than stopping in Tiburon and having a bite and drink at Sam's.
I won't lie - the food isn't AMAZING but the ambiance and views make up for it. If you live in SF chances are you don't see the sun too often and most places don't have outdoor seating options so Sam's is a welcome change.
I was here last week and ordered the huevos rancheros for $13. They were definitely above average.
I've been at Sam's in the past and found the food mediocre but my most recent experience was very positive.
The wait staff are friendly and really you can't beat a sunny day in Tiburon with views on houses that are in the tens of millions of dollars.
I love Sam's - especially the staff - particularly the guys who are friendly and hunky and don't mind a bit of flirting - food works for me - but with hunky guys serving who notices?
Sam's could easily increase their ratings if they would do just two things better: (1) more attentive service; and (2) more consistent food.
When you have been out sailing all morning, you work up a hunger and a thirst that usually makes ANYTHING taste better just because you are so hungry. The braised short ribs were great but the calamari and clam chowder were only so-so. Perhaps if one were to down the whole bottle of wine before tasting the food, one would not be so sensitive to bland.... but then one wouldn't want to go back on the boat with that skipper...
There was not a very large crowd and no reason to wait for a table on the dock - there were more gulls than girls, more pigeons than people. But even with the light (for Sam's) crowd, the waitress never seemed to have time to check on us. Neither did she seem to be able to remember to bring us anything to drink although reminded a couple of times.
I am never bitter but I can be disappointed. I loved the dock seating and loved watching the boats come and go. I will go back but I will have lowered expectations....
A sunny late November day - what a wonderful place!! This outdoor deck is magical and, if you can fight off the seagulls (the staff does a heroic job) there are some great food choices!! The Calimari were, as others have said "spot on" - crispy, perfectly done, not greasy, and served with a delicious chipoltle aioli. The only complaint we had was that the delicious fish sandwich of the day (sauteed rockfish, with arugula and a lovely pesto aioli and fresh tomato) was served on a foccacia that was WAY too thick. Half of the thickness would have allowed the other flavors to come through (I took off the top, but the bottom was still too bready and thick).. but it was a delicious combo otherwise. And of course the view, the ambiance (late lunch not crowded -Thursday 1:00 PM ) the warmth of the sun... Ummmm
Sam's serves carbs. Buns, bread, batter, etc. are the mainstay of most everything on menu.
Eating inside is something akin to what it must be like dining at a low-end university faculty dining room or perhaps a Bed & Breakfast in Blackpool, England.
Why should you compete for your meal with birds? When seated outside on Sam's harbour-side deck your attention is divided into three parts: your carb-laden food; your guests; and avoiding the birds dive bombing the bread basket atop your table.
If you sit outside, wear a helmet. If they attempt to seat you inside, go elsewhere. Come to think of it, if you're hungy and in Tiburon, eat elsewhere.
I'm surprised at the relatively low ratings for this place. I was expecting it to be at least 4 stars. Well I'm still giving it four stars because the cioppino is awesome. It's about $26 for a HUGE bowl filled with all sorts of seafood!
I went here for lunch on a Tuesday and it was pretty busy! However, we were seated immediately. The 5 of us ordered the cioppino, fried calamari, the daily special fish sandwich, and a cup of clam chowder. We shared everything and the waitress was nice enough to hook us up with an extra cup of chowder. We also ordered 3 drinks and a cappuccino. All of this for about $25 per person after taxes and tips.
That's not bad at all considering the high quality seafood that we got as well as the great environment (on a pier) and the amazing views of the San Francisco Bay. I would definitely come back here if my schedule and wallet permits.
The majority of the time we are out on the Bay- we always seem to find our way to Sam's for brunch. One of the few places that offers a free boat dock with no strict rules. We like to check their live webcam to see if its crowded and if there is space on the dock before we get there.
The back deck is connected to the dock- so you will hear boats revving. Ppl. eating outside sometimes don't understand that certain powerboats need to do that when they start...don't like it dont eat near a boat dock...
Brunch food is good, but nothing unique or special. You're def. paying an extra penny for being able to sit on a sunny deck with a view of the yacht club and city.
They are def. not as cool as they used to be about letting ppl. eat then drink all day at ur table. They prefer u to move to the "bar" area once you are done with your meal.
One of the locals recommended Sam's to us as a good place to grab a burger. I should have known better than to take advice from a stranger!
The burger (probably not Sam's specialty) was flavorless and somehow simultaneously dry, greasy, and undercooked. A generous single tomato slice was provided (wow, thanks) in addition to a dry slice of white onion and lettuce leaf. The french fries were no more interesting than frozen Ore-Ida's from your local grocer.
If a restaurant can't master a basic burger, it doesn't bode well for the other items on the menu. I found Sam's to be over-priced and lackluster. The view is the best feature about it.
I'm not a big fan.
It's right by the water with access to the boats in the back. I found myself in the midst of wealthy hipsters and their children running around the dock. Like someone forgot to put a leash on them.
Flying rats (pigeons) and seagulls were diving between our tables for food and I was hoping I wasn't going to get crapped on.
Oh, and our waitress was also wearing sunglasses on a rather cloudy evening for some reason.
The table we had on the patio felt sticky, almost as if it was linoleum. They shorted us an oyster and they had to bring an extra one out. The fish and chips were ok, but I just didn't feel completely satisfied by this place. I like feeling satisfied.
Approve, I do not.
The deck at Sam's was our incentive rest stop after a perimeter hike around Angel Island. Oceanside dining is so relaxing. It kind of moves you into your own little dream land.
In kiddo's dreamland he was drinking a SKYY lemonade concoction posted on the bar (Not!). In hubby's world he remarked how the crowd at Sam's seemed to have gotten younger (you go right on thinking that sweetie) since last we were there. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon and Sam's managed to transport us all to our own little happy places.
Sam's is perfectly kid friendly with a kid's lunch menu (til 5pm) that includes items such as grilled cheese, hotdogs, fish and chips, etc. Their fries are pretty screamin'. So much so that we ended up splitting an order after hubby and kiddo had already had full meals (hubby had the ahi sandwich special on focaccia bread with side salad, which I thought was middle of the road). I just stuck to a couple of Pacificos with lime...and a few of those yummy fries.
Lots of people out "being seen" makes for good people watching. We cruised in about 4:30 and got seated right away. As much as I love outdoor seaside dining there's no way I'd have waited an hour or more with child in tow.
Food was alright, service okay. It's Marin County so there's going to be attitude. I ignore all that and just take in the good weather and scenery.
The best part of the place is to sit outside and enjoy the view on a sunny day.
This is the perfect city escape... only problem is that it is def not a secret!
As long as you go prepared to wait, oh.. two hours for a table then you will have an amazing time soaking up the sunshine and pink lemonades (HIGHLY recomended, this drinks are 5 stars).
Taking the Ferry over is the way to go, makes for a perfect Saturday or Sunday.
I ended up biking from San Francisco to Tiburon and headed to Sam's for a bite to eat, a beer and the outdoor patio. When I got there at 2:30 in the afternoon, the patio was packed. Sam's is clearly the pace to see and be seen place in Tiburon. I ended up sitting inside right next to the window and watching the shenanigan's on the outdoor patio. My food was okay. I had a chicken on a focaccia roll and fries. In my opinion, it is a little overpriced. My sandwich was $13 and was nothing special.
If you want to go, hang out on the deck, drink a fru-fru drink and be seen in Tiburon this is the place to go. If you are looking for a good meal then I would hit up one of the other boutique restaurants down the street.
Great big deck for lovely drinking in the sun and Awesome people watching,
Yes its overpriced. It is partly a tourist trap. Yes the waitstaff has had too much sun and thus are not very good - But get a beer or one of the specialty cocktails and just enjoy the warmth while you can.
Tip - arrive before 11am or after 3pm to avoid crowds.
I'd much rather go to Sam's during the week, I can tell you. We attended the Tiburon Art Festival Saturday August 22. It is a very good art fest with real artists, not representatives of large mass produced junk. It is juried.
Anyway, we decided to have lunch at Sam's. It was OK. The fish and chips were OK, nothing I would order again. We had the calamari, it was good. My husband and a friend of ours had the ahi tuna sandwich, beware of large amounts of bread. Otherwise the sandwich was good.
There is just nothing to recommend the place on the weekend. I attempted to go to the ladies room twice, however the long line out of the door to the restroom stopped me. Now that is really sad. With the heavy drinking crowd on the patio, I decided it was probably a good thing to wait until I got on the ferry!
Took the 10:50 am ferry over from San Fran this morning with a group of 5. Spent a long time here (over 3 hours) but it was awesome to sit in the sun, enjoy the company and play "Categories" (we had no problem entertaining ourselves!). The crowd seemed like the stereotypical Marina 20/30-somethings who wanted to come out and drink before noon. Plus a few locals with kids who wished they were young and untethered again ;-)
Food was excellent. The braised BBQ short ribs were incredible. Our friends loved the "pt. reyes" bleu cheese that came with the onion rings. As others have weighed in on, the service wasn't tremendous, but our server (Jasmine) was very friendly. After a couple of rounds of mimosas and bloody mary's, she told us a joke that I shouldn't repeat here. Good icebreaker for the table!
This place fills up fast, so get here when they open... and then linger as long as they'll let you. Best to come with a group of people... out of towners would probably be impressed.
You never quite know what you're going to get at Sam's, whether it's a two hour wait, crazy seagulls, drunken hilarity or, you know, falling through the deck.
Yes, my friend's foot went through a loose board, but luckily he wasn't injured, and didn't go into the water. Good job Sam's though for having someone come over to patch it immediately, while we were still at the table.
I'm giving Sam's four stars because of the ambiance. It's an amazing way to spend a sunny afternoon. The food is pretty good; the service not so great.
On this occasion we had ordered drinks and an appetizer at the bar, and when our name was called for our party of 10, the rest of the group hadn't arrived yet. We let the hostess know the others were on the way and they said it was ok to seat us anyway. We proceeded to order drinks and appetizers. We were then informed that we couldn't stay at our table until the rest of the group arrived. Luckily they changed their minds because there were no longer tables available in the bar section. Which meant that we would have had to juggle our platters of oysters and calamari, and round of drinks.
We lingered at our table for a while, but never went without fresh drinks on the table, and thus managed to rack up quite a tab. So it was a little annoying when the server approached several times to remind us that there was a wait for tables. Other than that we had a great time and enjoyed the food.
I had the seared ahi sandwich, which is no longer on the menu, but they were happy to make it anyway. Although, I do like their burgers better. The calamari is ok - I always like calamari, but their version didn't stand out.
As for drinks, their bloody marys are just ok - nothing remarkable, and not quite spicy enough for my taste. The Skyy pink lemonade is good: refreshing and not too sweet.
After missing the 6:20 ferry by 15 minutes, we decided to stay close to the dock for dinner in case we missed the 8 o'clock too. Well the oysters we ordered as appetizers were just okay. They were a bit small in my opinion, but come on what was I expecting for a place that is a bar when you first walk in and becomes a restaurant on the deck? Besides the lurking birds that were waiting for a moment when our food would be unguarded the atmosphere was actually really nice. I ordered the clam chowder, which wasn't the best and the linguini with mussels, which actually wasn't what I ordered (I wanted the linguini pomodoro, but was so hungry and pressed for time I just ate it. pun intended). The best thing about this place is probably the fish and chips and the service. Our waitress was really prompt and knew we were on a time crunch and even let us know when our ferry was approaching.
The food isn't the reason to go to Sam's in Tiburon The only reason to go there is to sit on the patio, where you can take in a gorgeous view of the City and to people watch.
They have outdoor heaters, but try to go there on a sunny day (bring a cap to keep the sun our of your eyes) and and arrive early (by 11am on a weekend) to get a table or you may have a very long wait. I've been here many times and it's a great place to take a date or visitors from out of town.
The food is ok -- not great and not awful, but expensive (you're paying for the view)-- and the service can be slow when they are busy. The best things on the menu IMHO are the grilled artichoke and grilled oysters in butter (not BBQ sauce), which are two of the cheapest things on the menu. The crab benedict (poached eggs over crab) is also very good.
Drinks are simply ordinary and overpriced. Drink water to save money and just soak up the sun and the view. ;)
Last weekend, Sam's gave me another reason why I need to bring a megaphone with me to eat so I can point it directly at the server/owner/whomever-needs-it with the classic reminder: The customer is ALWAYS right, and you've GOTTA train your staff.
All in all we had the amazing time that any sunny deck will bring, but we had a few service snafus that soured it a bit.
Service: We had a car of people coming late, so we made sure to check with the waitress before we sat down. We were assured it was okay, then sat the 5 of us down at the table set for 10 and ordered two appetizers. Before the food came, the hostess tried to kick us off the table even though we had been okay'd by the waitress, had five drinks on the table, and had ordered food. This could be one of the biggest No-Nos in the business.
It was hilarious hearing the hostess say "We would NEVER seat a party before everyone is present" with a certain gusto and snotty sense of entitlement right after the waitress just told us the exact opposite. This was funny because the situation presented only two distinct options that could have been true: A.) That's really NOT the way it's done or B.) You don't train your staff correctly. Either way, probably don't want to speak so authoritatively with either of those points being the only possible outcomes.
And after that, we were pressured by the next waitress to leave, even though we were ordering drinks the entire time and weren't there for any longer than a long, casual lunch (got forbid we try to do that on a beautiful sunny deck on a clear day!)
Food: Calamari was far from the best I've had, basically tiny little fat nuggets as opposed to actual rings that are fried all the way around and crispy. And the burger (which I've heard great things about) left much to be desired. Did its job but really nothing special.
Regardless of the above, three stars because....
Ambiance: Can't beat it....the patio is right on the water, people pulling up in anything from a yacht all the way down to a james-bond-style-mini-powerboats.
Has a wonderful bay dock with tables, but they squeeze so many on it, that it loses some of its appeal. We ate lunch inside because no available seating on dock.
The food was ok, but not great. Hence, I feel it's overpriced.
The calamari appetizer was fresh and perfectly cooked. Too bad they pair it with a tasteless type of tartar sauce.
The cioppino was a big disappointment. It needed more flavoring in the soup, which looked like Pace Picante sauce.
Dessert was so-so.
We ended up going two weeks in a row. On the first visit on a Friday afternoon it was busy and while we had to wait for an outside table it was great that they had open bar tables to wait at so we could start drinking. The weather was fabulous both times we could not have asked for a better place to have a cocktail or Anchor Steam - San Francisco view, -Priceless. We had very friendly Hostess's both times and at the bar. Inside it was pretty empty as it was perfect weather outside. They have sunscreen if you are going to be there a while. You should put it on before you start drinking. Food wise we had the Calamari and Onion Rings. Both were good. We also had the Burgers and Portobello sandwhich. The Fish & Chips looked good also.
Great place to hang for a while - During the week if you can swing it as the weekends get crowded.
If you go here for a meal, definitely sit outside (weather willing). The outdoor area is on a quiet dock with plenty of sailboats to pine after and sunshine to absorb. Their food is as good as any seafood grill, but to be satisfied keep it simple. Their fish n' chips are tasty and satisfying, and if you like a filling, thick clam chowder go for that. But as a beer lover/whore/snob/it's the only thing I truly love to drink, I must base my assessment on the bar experience.
Sam's has a great bar environment; plenty of clean bar space, dependable service and all the free popcorn you can eat. Although their beer selection cannot fully satisfy a beer snob, I appreciated the always solid Anchor Steam, Fat Tire or Pyramid Ale. One major flaw...no beer on tap.
Overall, not a place to go out of your way for, but if you're spending a day in downtown Tiburon, it's definitely a hot spot.
I was over this place before I even sat down. Why? Here is why:
Pre-Show
-Drunk women in the restroom stalls loudly talking about a woman who looks like "Shinaynay" on Facebook. I need to pee, and do not care about your internet antics.
-Two other (somewhat buzzed?) women at the sink, one of which whimpering because a guy did not call like he said he would. Really?
This was as 4pm on a Sunday, not last call on a Saturday night.
Dining/Drinking experience
-Drinks were not all that great, good but seriously weak for a Bloody Mary.
-Oysters were great and thus was the highlight. Guacamole and chips did what they were intended to do.
-Service was hit or miss. He hovered when I didn't need him and peaced out when I wanted another weak drink.
- Outdoor seating is beautiful
-Outdoor seating is over crowded and PS who the hell is going to steal your plastic tables? The flying rats?
-I emphasize overcrowded seating because there was a party who had other seating options but for some reason decided to encroach on my BF and I to the point where I had to get up and change seats.
-A woman from the aforementioned encroaching party could not shut up about how great she was as her friends sat and nodded their heads in agreement.
Although the deck seating was amazing and the people watching was entertaining I would still like that 45 minutes of my life back please.
We went mid-week and the service was great, the food delicious and the scenery wonderful. My friend dreams about the fish and chips and I had the spinach salad which was crispy, the dressing very good and the waiter substituted goat cheese for the blue cheese at my request.
I'd go again.
Sam's is kind of gross. The patio can be a Marina-transplant/Real Housewives of Marin nightmare, so crowded it's unpleasant, and food is not good. View, large patio and tradition are what keep this place in business; no one else in Tiburon has food this bad. I've tried to make this place work so many times, and it's just either gross, or a huge social eye-roll. Yelp says it best - Meh. If you get off the ferry, and you're a tourist, go.
If you are out on the Bay sailing - this is the place to stop and have bite to eat. Food here is good, but this is not why I gave these guys 5 stars, it's the whole experience:
Sailing out on the bay, around Alcatraz, near Angel Island, by the Belvedere, to Tiburon. Tie up at the Sam's own private pier and run up to their open deck, right on the water. Grab a bite to eat and a cold one and enjoy life - it doesn't get better than that!
Service is friendly, atmosphere is very relaxed, and the view is awesome!
The only annoyance is birds - be ready, they will grab french fries right out of your hands!
I've never felt more like a douche bag than I did the other day, pulling up to Sam's on a sail boat.
Still, it was pretty tight.
I suppose its sad that in this day and age with people lining up out the door for a table that Restaurants do not give a Damn. While the food was not bad the attitude of the Staff from Hostess to server to Bus boy was atrocious. This is the second time in two visits that I have had such an experience at Sam's it is a shame as the view is great. Well I made my point, a very small tip.. You tip for good service not to be treated like dirt.
Wont be back, there are othere places in the area that can have my business
Ive heard great things about this waterfront restaurant from locals in and out of San Francisco. The idea is fantastic, you take a ferry from fisherman's wharf and then it drops you right in front of the place. Be prepared for a long wait if its a weekend and the weather is nice. There is a seating area in front where you can sit anywhere but only appetizers are available. We waited about 1.5 hours for a table for 12. Since we were waiting awhile we weren't as hungry when we sat.
Basically the worst customer service I've ever experienced at a food establishment. Even worse than United, which is my nemesis. The wait staff is slow because its sooo busy. There is a bar so we decided just to get up and buy our own drinks. Apparently this makes the waitstaff incredibly hostile. We were also charged a 15 dollar cake fee for eating a couple cupcakes without warning. When we asked what it was, the manager, instead of being kind and understanding informed us that we had sat at the table and not ordered enough food and drink and went to the bar. I did not know there was a certain amount you had to order for the wait staff to be happy. The manager was completely hostile and rude. Not sure what the difference is going to the bar or waiting 20 minutes for the waiter, but theyre getting our money anyway!
To top it off there were kids sitting next to us meaning we had to be quiet and calm down the swearing. Lets be honest - this is a drinking place, people are gonna get loud. If you cant handle some swearing then this is not the place for you but please do not blame me and my friends for the fact that you are old and decided to procreate tiny children. That is not my fault and if I apologize once, be accepting and not a complete jerk.
Basically, I was in a hostile mood after this. From this review you should learn that you need to order a ton of food and drink otherwise you will get zero service and proceed to get kicked out. Also please be very quiet as there are children around, and do not swear - you will die.
So after years have passed, I finally returned to Sam's and sadly must dock a star...
I do agree with the above review that its a rite of passage! Everyone has to go to Sams, even with my minus one star, I'll totally be back on a warm weekend...
So I hadn't recalled how infrequently the ferries ran, and we were coming on Easter, so that would have been wise to research before waking up that day...regardless, it was slightly colder than i would have liked, but still a nice day to head over to tiburon and show my boyfriend Sams..
We were just drinking, so sat in the cocktail section on the deck, and i swear to GOD every person there was beating me with their chair. Honestly, cant you unbolt the tables and set them slightly farther apart? or at least not cram 2305982350 chairs around one table so that anyone and everyone at neighboring tables are assured to assault you at all times? and until youre as drunk as they are, it will be a constant annoyance and violation of your personal space. Also drinks are $$, and when youre being beaten, sitting at plastic picnic tableclothed bolted down tables, in plastic garden chairs, you somewhat question what you're thinking...
The bloody wasnt great by any means, but i do love the ramos fizz(es), and my boyfriend loved his watermelon cocktail--but not enough that he wanted to switch locations. Also, I think the drinks are secretly virgin.
I think it would be a better experience at a dinner table, as they seem more appropriately spaced.
Still a wonderful experience to take the ferry over and sit in the sun, just arrive a little tipsy so you wont be annoyed by space violating drunkards!

I went to this place years ago and LOVED it!
On a nice day, it seems like EVERYONE from the city… Read more »
BBQ shortribs with the bone falling out, melt in your mouth yumminess, artichokes grilled with red pepper aioli (although they were a bit small, especially for moi who lives very near to Castroville, the artichoke capital of the world...), a great atmosphere, and who can beat the view of the marina and the harbor and the water and the houses that look like they could fall off of that cliff...
Anyway, I liked it. I will go back for the crabcakes and shortribs and artichokes and other yummies as soon as possible.
Sam's is a nice place to go if weather permits. Sitting in the back patio can be cool, but I kinda felt like there were way too many city marina type dbags (sorry have to say it) out that day. It's decent to go out there if you're already in the area or are taking the ferry, but otherwise seems a bit out of the way. Drinks are average price I guess but um, paying for chips and salsa? Are you freaking kidding me? Pass. It was at least, good for the moment.
Sam's was hyped up to me and other than being able to sit on the nice deck- it wasn't that great. We took the ferry over from San Francisco expecting an exceptional breakfast. I was not impressed with the menu- very simple. I ended up getting an over-priced hamburger. And I'm pretty sure all the employees were either hungover or just flat out hated their job.
All-in-all is was a great time but that's mostly due to my company.
Sam's is always a good time, especially when the weather's cooperating. You should arrive by 11am or noon on a Saturday or Sunday to ensure you get a table outside. It's right on the water, like 5 feet away from the pier. We tried the food on Saturday and it was ok; I only ordered the greek salad, which was pretty good. The crab salad sandwich looked delicious, but had a TON of mayo. The fried oyster sando also looked good.
Only issue with Sam's is PIGEONS! They are EVERYWHERE. The server even told us there had been 3 pigeon attacks that day...I hate those stupid birds.
This is my favorite waterfront restaurant on the days when seagulls don't attack. On a nice day the weekend brunches at Sam's are one of the best reasons to live in the Bay Area. The views of Alcatraz, Angel Island, and SF are the bomb-diggity. Soak up the sun and come prepared with sunglasses or a hat.
Evenings at Sam's restaurant are white tablecloth and nice. The evening bar brings out the local, shall we call them lovelies, for dancing and beer.
Sunday afternoon, out on the deck, the sun is shining and you've got your pink vodka lemonade in hand. Could life be better right about now?? Just add some of Sam's Anchor Cafe Ahi Tartare, or a fish sandwich. Grab another pink lemonade and sail on back to the city! Congratulations, you've just experienced Sam's!
The drinks are bitchin' strong.
Come here for breakfast.
Love this place.
