Let's say, 3.5 stars.  I stayed at the Samoset Resort for two nights on business and it was a pleasant experience. I found my room to be very clean and cozy, with the added bonus of a harbor view. The beds were super comfy, with feathertop mattresses and plush pillows.

The resort didn't offer much in the way of entertainment outside of golf, but the scenery was very pretty and a path on the grounds led to a rocky strip that went straight out to a lighthouse.

The staff members I encountered during my stay were all friendly and helpful. The banquet services department took care of everything in the exhibit hall, from consistently refreshing coffee stations to making sure all shipments were taken care of. Overall, it was a nice visit and a great location for a small to midsize conference.

Beee-yew-tiful!  It's been about 20 years since I've been to Samoset so when I visited this past weekend to attend a wedding, I was pleasantly surprised at how well the place held up over the years.  Jessie S's review sums things up pretty well but I'll add my two cents.  The golf course overlooking the ocean was the perfect spot for a wedding on a gorgeous sunny day.  Catering at the resort did a great job as far as hotel/wedding caterers go...I thought the dinner reception food and the brunch the next morning was great!  Hotel room overlooking the ocean and breakwater was spacious, clean and has definitely been renovated- bathroom has marble counters, a stand-up shower and a big hot tub.  Off-season pricing made it a great deal.  I didn't get to use much of the amenities while I was here , but looks like it would be a great place to visit again.  Location is key- right on the water but close to Camden & other coastal Maine towns.

Don't kid yourself. This place is antiseptic and dull.

That's really about 4 1/2 stars.  This is where we've been staying.  It's an interesting contrast to Powhatan in Virginia.  We've traded the Canada geese for seagulls and crows, but neither is as ubiquitous.  The grounds are beautifully maintained and are mostly golf course, which means mowing and golf carts and conversations outside.  In addition to the timeshare portion there is a hotel and conference rooms.  Our biggest complaint is the lack of wifi in the condo, which requires us to bring the laptop to the lobby if we want to go online.  Makes for good people watching and the lobby is beautiful, w/ high ceilings and wooden floors made of the end grain of large, squared logs.  The public restrooms are large, clean and attractive, w/ marble on the floors and walls and automatic fixtures.  Last w/e there were three weddings and it was fun to watch the comings and goings.  New folks are arriving now and I suspect there's at least one wedding here this w/e.  We're leaving tomorrow, so we won't see.  I've already told you about their restaurants and the staff has been unfailingly helpful.

This is the second time we've stayed here, trading in from our Maui timeshare.  The last time the place was called Samoset Lodge.  We really liked it then, although I can retrieve few details about the condo itself, other than the furniture being covered in a dreadful red and blue country clutter plaid w/ the wooden pieces being in the same vein.  But we liked the view and found it comfortable as a base of operations.  Since we were here last they've replaced the furniture w/ more attractive stuff, solid looking oak pieces holding the TV and flanking the sofa, offering drawers.  The plaid only remains on the dining area chairs and it's small enough not to offend.  The bathroom is small, the toilet and bathtub in one room, the double sinks outside in what's essentially a hallway to the bedroom.  Towels are thick and plush, cream colored rather than white.  The toilet paper is thin...not good.  The bed isn't new but its comfortable and the comforter is heavenly, light and warm and wonderful.  The kitchenette is enough for us to prepare tea and breakfast if we wish.  Lighting is good for reading.  The view of the ocean is wonderful.

Alan learned from the front desk staff that the timeshare owners group  voted against the assessment required to put wifi in the timeshare units.  I think the owners here are on the elderly side, and many frail.  I infer that because of the large number of spaces designated for the disabled, more than at any other resort we've stayed at.  That, and the grab bars in the bathroom.  Given that, I don't think there's a high value placed on wifi.  Those of us who trade in care.  There's wifi in the hotel and here in the lobby.  Alan told them we'd be willing to pay for it, as we did in Virginia.  When we return to the Maine coast someday we'll see what's available then.  Convenient wifi or not, we like this place and will return to it.

Growing up I thought the Samoset was the bomb.  We all went there. It was the fanciest place in town, and for a little while I lived down the street.  Then I grew up, got a job there and realized it isn't as fancy as they would like you to believe.  Now, it is not a dump by any means, but this is not the luxury resort most people are used to (in my opinion). Now, if they have done some renovations and improvements after 2003, then I pardon my criticism.  There are however, many great things about this place too.
So, let's start:
The grounds:  The Samo is on the ocean and has wonderful sweeping views of Rockland Harbor and the ocean.  Not owned by the Samoset, but off of it is the Rockland Breakwater.  This lighthouse is a neat mile or so walk along craggy (yet smooth and walkable) rocks.  Once you get to the lighthouse there isn't anything to do but walk back.  You will see some people fishing off the Breakwater. The Samo also has a golf course.  I don't golf so I can't comment on its quality, but it seems to bring many many golfers to the area.
The amenities:  The have 2 pools.  One indoor, one outdoor.  Both pretty standard.  Of note though:  the locals go swimming there! You can get a pass or membership so many locals swim there as well as the employees.  The sauna is standard too as is the locker rooms.  They have a tiny arcade next to the indoor pool. Tennis courts. Check.  Gym. Check.  Again, unless it has been improved since 2003, the gym isn't all that hot.  They have many, many conference rooms, so if you want to hold your business' conference here, this could be a good choice.
The restaurants:  They are good.  One has a cool Sunday brunch that many of the locals go to.  There is a bar restaurant and a fancy schmancy one overlooking the water.
The rooms: Now, I used to be a housekeeper here in my youth (19 years old or so). The cheapest rooms are nothing special (again 2003.....) Honestly, they are horrible by any means, but they will definitely not blow your socks off.  They are expensive cause of course you are also paying for the fancy golf course, and such, and you can find better rooms at B&B's in Rockport, Camden, or Rockland. But, if you are there for the golf and what not, these rooms will do.  The more expensive rooms and suites obviously get better but again, they don't blow my socks off.  The suites are nice with a living room area and kitchenette, but awfully darn expensive (and people who rent those rooms tend to not tip the housekeepers. Cheapos.)
I have know many an employee here.  Myself, friends, etc... so the service I believe is good.  They treat their employees well and being the only resort in town, they have a reputation to live up to.  My personal opinion, is if staying in the Rockland area, to not waste your money here and to stay in a B&B or smaller hotel...
