Three stars because Sammy's seems to have fallen off its game a bit since the time I was a regular customer, back in my college days.
It's still a great (read: lower priced) alternative to the official UofC offerings, especially compared to the hospital food court, etc.
Healthy, it's not, but then again, if that's what you were looking for, you'd have been turned away by the joint's exterior...
This place is dirty, often busy or packed with hooligan youth (haha!) and looks like hell from the outside... but man, oh man, if you want a greasy gyro or amazing cheese fries this is where to go! They make everything when you order it -- so its not like McDonalds where your burger and fries have been sitting around for hours just waiting for you get there.
The place always has a ton of doctors and staff from UChi hospitals eating there -- even though they must know what this place does to your arteries! (I shudder to think)
Basically, don't come here looking for some cute retro diner or even good service -- just damn good food, very quick in an awesome atmosphere.

I can live with the fact that the place looks like they are squatting in an abandoned building and decided to establish a restaurant. But service is pathetically slow (finally upgraded their arcane system of ordering; sort of), and food is actually pretty bad.
Although they do advertise trans fat free oil, the place doesn't even pretend to be a healthy alternative. Food is typically greasy spoon fare which is sadly either under or over cooked and dripping with oil. Hell they use to have this poster up of some chick chomping down on a gyros that was splattered with oil in the dining area, for 5+ years! (sadly it has been taken down)
I cannot believe anyone would give "Sammys "Touch"" place 5 stars. I assume they are freshman from UofC that have never lived in a city with good food or one with variety. Do yourself a favor and head to greektown for a gyros, or some other place outside hyde park for a greasy spoon.

A wonderful hidden gem in Hyde Park and very accessible for students or employees at the U of Chicago.
I found this place by accident. Don't let the rundown appearance of the building fool you. The inside is pretty much a standard diner atmosphere, and the food is wonderful and reasonably priced. I highly recommend it over the standard U of Chicago cafeterias.
The only gripe is that Sammy's does not have an extensive list of healthier options, but you really shouldn't be going to a diner if you want healthy anyway. Go there, enjoy some good greasy food, and thank me later.

YUM. I've lived about 70 yards away from this place since April or so, but have never eaten there until a few days ago.
I got two hot dogs and an order of fries, and was totally happy with everything. You don't walk into a hot dog joint expecting a medium-rare porterhouse steak and $100 bottle of wine. I expected yummy, cheap food and got what I was after.
The prices here are better than a lot of places I can think of, too. My food was about $5. I worry sometimes about this place closing down, because it never seems to be very busy. Of course, I'm never there during the day, so the U of C hospital crowd probably files in and out on a regular basis.
Based on experience, I'm definitely going back, and by reading Carrie's review, it looks like I'll be getting gyros.

mmmm, Sammy's oh how I love you with your delicious cheeseburgers and gyros! You may threaten my cholestrol and blood pressure but you're worth it. I love their double cheeseburgers which ooze cheesy deliciousness. Oh how I love your yummy fries as well. Sammy's is the best hotdog/gyro/diner in Hyde Park!!!
