If you are craving for some Hong Kong style Chinese BBQ come here. You can order to go crispy duck, chicken, pork skins etc.
They also have a really small seating but food is legit and greasy. Generally you have a wait or you have to sit with other people on the same table.
Variety of vegetable dishes, meaty duck, and crispy pork skin.
Will guarantee you yumminess and zits.
Parking is ample though whenever you go during eating hours. -

BBQ DUCK AND BBQ PORK PLEASE!
I love this place for it's bbq duck and bbq pork. This is the best place for it. It is a whole in the wall place and has been opened for decades, but GUESS WHAT? they just remodeled half of their small restaurant. It looks more like a Chinese cafe now.. and you get the "house-special" soup in the beginning while you are waiting for your meal.
The waiters are more helpful (even though they do not speak English) and the ambiance got better. So check this place out if you would like some authentic Chinese food. -
Review from Roland L.
Ah, Sam Woo BBQ! I loved you for many years...but your food today was pretty greasy! Know what? Right when I started talking about it being greasy, I began thinking about that clip on Jackie Chan's Rush Hour when Chris Tucker argues with the guy at the Chinese fast food stand...sorry, I digress!
Well, I think this Sam Woo has seen better days. It earned a "B" health grade...which to me, is not a good thing! Is it bad that I think a Chinese restaurant tastes the best when it has a "C" grade? I've actually had some of the best Chinese food at places below a letter grade...that's right a percentage grade and the food was off the hook!
Was feeling a little Chinese today and was hoping for some Bitter Melon with Beef but the lady taking orders said they no longer do bitter melon! What? You don't have Roast Pork either? But it's only noon!!! Sammy, are you really trying to lose my business? Okay, here's what we ended up ordering (sorry I didn't take any photographs. it was take out and I had some hungry peeps waiting for me):
Braised String Beans: 3/5
Some limp, some firm, these string bean were batch cooked and placed under a heat lamp. They seem to be a hodge podge batch of fresh and a few hours old.
Rock Cod with Chinese Broccoli: 3/5
Wow, they are really getting skimpy with their fish in this dish. At one time this dish had huge chunks of rock cod. Well, at least the fish didn't take old and fishy!
Turnip with Beef Brisket: 5/5
Just like I remembered, this dish was awesome! Lots of brisket, nice chunks of tendon! Turnips were stewed perfectly with the brisket and tendons. So flavorful!
Tofu in Brown Sauce: 3/5
This was one of those dishes under the heat lamp.
*Sidebar* Let's set the record straight: There is nothing wrong with the food under the heat lamp. Sam Woo used to solely have their meats in this section: Whole Salted Chicken; Whole Soy Sauce Chicken; Char Siu. It seems they turned this into half BBQ, half quick popular eats.
*End Sidebar*
Sam Woo used to make this to order, with large 1.5" cubes of fried bean curd. Kiss those days goodbye! Although each piece of tofu was firm, they looked tired. Somewhat tasty, but super greasy this time!
White rice: 5/5
Who can mess up white rice anyway...really? Oh, never mind! I've had some bad white rice...strike that! Fluffy, long grain. Yum!
Overall, Sammy's is A-OK with me. Boy do I have some stories about this location, but I really don't want to gross you out about cockroaches! The funny part of it is, I still eat here! lolz!
BTW, like many Chinese restaurants: CASH ONLY!!! Shhhhh, don't tell the IRS!

Woo-Hoo for Sam Woo! - I really like this place.
For years I would accompany a friend of mine who came here to pick up BBQ duck for her husband. The ducks hanging in the window were not the most appetizing or appealing site.
One day another friend said, they have great won ton noodle soup with BBQ Pork. I ordered it and now I'm hooked.
The service is quick and no frills. The prices are spot on. Can't go wrong here, and if you're really hungry the menu offers tons of options.
Now I'm hungry for egg noodles! -

Monterey Park, CA
They make some of the best wonton noodle soup (their egg noodles have that 'bounce' to them. I wonder if they get their noodles from the guys in el monte that stock all the Chinese markets) and have decent Chinese BBQ. Their red chili oil is also very good with an authentic aged flavor to it. I went here a lot with my dad for the noodles when I was back in LA on my school vacations.
Is it dirty? Yes. Does it hover around a C rating? Yes. Have I seen this place closed down due to health inspection failure? Twice, and we went the day after it reopened. What matters it that I haven't ever gotten sick from eating here and the food is good. -

I saw one of the workers walk in the rest room took a dump! and walked straight out! WTF???? He should have at least washed his hands in the wash basin wheter he washes hands in the kitchen.
Yikes.

The Good: Sam Woo has always been my "go to" place whenever I'm craving for some good noodle soup, rice toppings or peking duck to go. It's open late, and you always get consistently good food. Heck, I don't care if LA County HEalth Dept. gives them a "C" grade all the time, I''d still go without batting an eyelash. But...
The Bad (the very, very bad):
Once again, Sam Woo Monterey Park has violated the LA County Public Health Standards, and this time, they did it in the grossest way possible. Went there yesterday and the place was locked. According to the sign lef t by the inspectors, it said it had MAJOR COCKROACH INFESTATION. Further investigation on the LA County Public Health website shows its other violations:

A hole in the wall that's been here for 25+ years.
Pros:
Open 'til Midnight.
Inexpensive.
Really good Salty fish and chicken fried rice...not too greasy btw.
Cons:
Typical service. (if you know what I'm sayin')
Not the cleanest dining area.
NOT a date type place....unless you've already established that she likes you for more than the things you can give her.
It's also OK if you're going with your cheap-o guy friends. -
Review from Nick H.
Duck Duck Goose Egg?
No way. No goose egg here. This place is OK. Plenty of ducks for take out and cheap. My first visit to Sam Woo in maybe 5 years.
~Ambiance/Service
Yup, this place needs a remodel. Older and kinda basic. Not a fancy place to take a date. But, the restaurant has an open feel to it. Very well lit and bright with large glass windows. Service? Typical of the area.
~Food
I did not do take out but sat down for a combo pork and duck plate. Both were dry. Good ol' waitress saved the day by bringing out extra gravy. The gravy was delicious. Added life to the meal and actually complimented the rice quite well. I have to say that the duck, not the best, was A OK.
~Price
Amazing! 13 bucks for two people. Wow. Never had duck that cheap. I could care less where it came from. It was good and a deal at the price. I am so a fan of the price and the price does not get better than this! 5 Stars.
Overall, I would come here again if craving duck and short on cash. Not a bad place but for sure don't take a first date here. CASH ONLY.Listed in: Rush Hour, DUCK ME! I love Duck..

Talk about cheap eats! $37 for five adults! Good thing, since it's a cash only restaurant, and I've gotten out of the habit of carrying cash around.
And, man, this is the cheap Chinese food that I crave now and again (all right ALL the time) -- roast duck, Singapore style rice noodles, beef chow fun, slippery egg over rice, won ton w/ egg noodles. I just couldn't decide, and even as we were eating, I kept hearing other tables' orders and lusting after their food.
I'm such a glutton.Listed in: Lowbrow Dining Destinations

Ewa Beach, HI
And only for the roast duck. Don't get me wrong. The rest of the food I have had there is good, too, but the duck is what gets you coming back.
pan fried noodles, served wet (think chow fun, but we always ordered it this way -- lol even by my Chinese roommate -- he never could get me to say it properly enough to not order in English)
also had the bbq pork fried rice
ordered other items, but those two were pretty consistent
But really, it is all about the roast duck. The fat, the grease, the skin. Eat it allll!!!!!!!!!! But, oooh, you have to limit how often you have this because it is far from healthy. It's just so tasty! IF you have leftovers, they won't last long in the fridge......someone will devour it.
I only ate at Sam Woo once (usually opted to order in for take-out). And I ordered a soup. BAAAADDDD idea. The soup was bland and ugh. Stick to fat, grease, skin and duck.Listed in: SoCal-ers.....eat these for…

Hungry for cheap ass chinese food... I asked my brothers if we could get away spending less than 25 bucks for dinner...they said only if I don't mind the cleanliness of a place. Sam woo it is...
Besides my father place, this is the only place an old chinese man can scold you without you becoming angry. It's accepted. It's good cheap food. No frills, no linen, barely any napkins..no customer service..this all drives the cost of food down...i'm ok with it.
We had soup, 4 dishes, and 4 fully satisfied stomachs--- 43 bucks with tip. More than 25 bucks....but i didn't feel ripped off. -

I really like this place, good authentic food. Now I say authentic because being Mexican American the only real choices I had were places like Panda Express and some other half a** chinese food places. Sam Woo has many choices to choose from, from the typical chow mein to duck and squid. All good choices if I do say so myself. A must try, trust me.

Review from Javier J.
I'm mixed about this one. Yes, it's the better of the sam woo's. it's the O.G one. And hey, if I want to see BBQ ducks hanging from a rack, I'll come here. I'm not going to come here for some clean place to eat, because really, the place is a mess when it comes to looks.
I also can't say I'm a huge fan. It's good. in some areas they are really good. But in other areas, some of which you would have figured they would be good at as it's standard Chinese food, they really suck.
Their beef and broc. was pretty boring. Uninspired, bland, pretty much subpar to even panda express. Which is really odd to think about. But yeah, it wasn't very good.
the house special fried rice wasn't anything to brag about either. I would put it a bit above panda, it was at least made fresher. But it wasn't really all that great and I had to really think about if I wanted to eat that as left overs.
Then you have the BBQ Ribs.. they had no. It was early in the evening and they were all out. I suppose this is what happens when you sell by the pound. I ended up going with the BBQ pork, which was pretty decent. Though having a good pound of it seemed a little like over kill.
The best thing about this place is the duck. And really, you should be getting the duck if you come to this spot. It's what they do great. Get a half duck and you're good to go. even the duck plate is pretty great. especially at the price it comes at you.
That's the best reason why I could recommend this place to anyone. The duck. it's really damn tasty and that should count for a lot of things. But you should be warned that if you don't look asian, you're not going to get the same attention at the counter. I was over looked twice to those who can speak the language. Which was pretty odd but it is one of those places where English is a second language. So be warned that you may feel out of your element by coming here.
So I would give this a 3.5 since a 3 seems pretty middle of the road. -

For an asian Restaurant, it carries nice varieties of food.
Of course, it's a CASH only place, so don't expect to use credit card there.
I bought some Special Lunch there on Wednesday for me and my co-worker, and it was quite very pricy for the portion. The food was good, but they should have put more for the price we paid.
I know the economy is tuff, but it's no reason for putting less than it used to be on the ration of the food.
As far as their health department Grading, I should say they earned what their grade was displayed on.
I will consider to buy from them again, if they start to accept credit card and boost up the portion on the food considering $8.19 for a lunch meal. -

This place is Sh**ty.
Service sucks. Even an notch below of your average chinese restaurant. Plenty of the other sam woo's in the vicinity are better than this one.
The food is LOADED with MSG. You know this from how many glasses of water you end up drinking over dinner. Plus the lethargy that comes after. The place has a very unclean feel to it. Tables are greasy, everything needs a good wipe down.
I used to come here out of convenience since its close to home, no more. I'll opt and drive over to any other place than eat here. -
Review from Dennis I.
Monterey Park, CA
I recommend staying away from this particular location and drive two miles to the San Gabriel location on Valley Blvd. The Valley location is much cleaner, larger, has a higher health code rating, and is better staffed.
The Monterey Park location is dirty and I don't understand why they don't just close this place down. It currently (12/20/08) has a big red 'C' rating and have gotten their previous 'B' ratings on the line at 80 points (one short of 'C'). I think the health inspector must have felt sorry for them as it could have been issued a string of 'C's which has bigger consequences.
The wording "NOT CLEAN" appears 4 times in their LA County public health report and they have two PHF (Potentially Hazardous Food) violations. It basically the improper handling of food in manner that can make the public sick via bacteria, viruses, and toxins. Those two violations are really bad for customers - One is for keeping food warm in holding trays at unsafe temperature / time limits. The other is for the mishandling of eggs at improper temperatures. Again, don't forget they were written up for 'Not Clean' multiple times. So what does this all mean? It means you need to think about what happens all those days when the LA County Health inspector isn't even there. All of this is indicative to restaurant people who don't get it and don't give a crud about you and me. In my book - forget them too.
Its been a while since I saw the cook stick his head in the hand sink next to to stove, rinsed his hair, shook it off right there like a dog, ran his hand thru it, wiped his face with his hands, and then continued chopping bbq pork up (I was sick for 3 days after eating there - seriously). Before that was the cook sneezing and not washing their hands (I thought that was isolated - but I was wrong). -

This is the O.G. Sam Woo and is still the best! I remember moving to Monterey Park in the early 1980's and going to Sam Woo for wonton noodle soup with my family and ordering their yummy roast chicken, duck and charsiu (BBQ Pork). The food is flavorful, delicious, and cheap. A bit on the salty side for me, but everything is so good that I just drink more tea ;) I highly recommend the BBQ Pork/Duck rice plate, wonton noodle soup, rice noodle (mai fun) soup with ground beef and cilantro. Their fried rice is excellent as well - the Yang Chow fried rice has lots of plump shrimp and Sam Woo's famous BBQ pork. Large portions too, so bring friends with empty stomachs!
Like other diners have said - the restaurant has no decor and service is okay. Definitely a great place for a late dinner after going to a show on the westside since they open late.
If you frequent restaurants in the Monterery Park area, you know that competition is tough - Sam Woo has been around for this long because the food is just no-frills excellent.
Parking in the small lot can be challenging because of the popular Seafood Village in the same plaza - I suggest street parking (off Moore rather than Chandler) or at the mechanic's next door (they allow restaurant parking after they close).

This was my favorite barbeque shop in Monterey Park. I always came here for roasted duck, roasted pork, or chicken. The food was always good and the prices were reasonable. However, I never knew they weren't clean. Maybe now there is an explanation for my stomach aches and diarrheas. However, I would still come if its open haha.

Although I did use to come here all the time for good Chinese food at a good price I have secede to come back ever since an experience I'd had a while back and here it is.
As usual the manager here is always a little awkward and this particular time we had just finished eating and were ready to pay the bill when all of a sudden while the guy was presenting us with our bill we seen a little roach run across the floor and what do you think the guy did? Believe it or not, he just stepped on it and left it right there on the floor in front of us and acted as if it was a normal thing and it stayed there longer than it took us to leave! So just imagine having to see that right after eating. That is it for me, this place is definitely down right dirty! Sure it tastes good but eat at your own risk and seriously guys, pay attention to the ratings. -

The SGV has a gazillion Chinese places and this is one of the original ones!! I think that's one of the reason I keep going here. That and the food is still great!! And they're open late on the weekends! Sam Woo has tons of locations now, and I think this might be the very first one.
And who the hell cares about the rating, and the cleanines, and the MSG, etc.!! As someone else said, I'll STILL go here!! Parking can be a pain though. -

Whenever my family and I are on the way to Disneyland, we ALWAYS stop here for their won ton noodle soup!
My favorite is their beef stew won ton noodle soup, but my sisters love their roast duck!! The portions are huge and the broth is very tasty! Its not too greasy, but its greasy enough to have that flavorful goodness!
Restaurant is a hole in the wall, chairs are sticky, cups/utensils/plates look about 20 years old, but who cares!! The food is cheap and its DELICIOUS!!
Service can be a little slow when its busy, but its not a huge problem. ;) -

You know this place is good when it's packed despite the following:
- the waitstaff ignores and sorta grunts responses at you.
- the bathroom is scarier than one at the LA Colosseum.
- their health grade was upgraded TO a B.
And yet, this place is awesome. The roast duck is hanging in the window so you must have some. Absolutely delicious. The other dishes are made more on the authentic side and are very good. However when they say you don't want the "house special chow mein", believe them. This is liver and kidney, not beef and chicken.
The only other thing is that you may get some looks walking in there if you are.. um... how shall I put this... white. Please just don't ask for a fork, that's embarrassing. -
Review from Lauren T.
This review is only based on the take out food.
I would say their best dishes are the char siu and roast duck. Everything else, like the chicken wings (fried and soy sauce), green beans, fried rice, is just mediocre.
This place has a B restaurant rating, so eat at your own risk if you're very into sanitation. -

Okay, I have been going here for years...as was stated...not the cleanest place...but..
You can't beat their Rock Cod in Black Bean sauce, Broc. Beef, Fried Rice, and Green Beans.
I never eat there, alway take out. -
Review from Ken C.

*Full disclosure: I only ordered from the take out counter...
I don't know if I'm getting old and more neurotic or if I've spent too much time away from my people making my Chinese out of practice and my familiarity of non respondent Chinese counter persons anything but... perhaps a combination of all of these things... but I'm starting to leave these types of places feeling inadequate due to my "California accent" when speaking Chinese and my overall lack of command for the language. I swear I can hear them laughing at me as I walk to my car. But I digress...
The roasted meats here are delicious. The Duck is nice and meaty and not too fatty. The pork was nice and meaty too with nice crispy roasted skin! A bit fatty but hey, it's pork. As I alluded earlier, the take out counter employees reinforce the common stereotype of the Chinese restaurant worker, but you were expecting that right?
The place is not nearly as dirty as many other yelpers have indicated. I agree, it's no "first date night" place, but I can see having a casual sit down meal here. Perhaps they've cleaned up their act? Perhaps my standards are below theirs? No, not likely.
In conclusion, if you're here for some delicious take out Chinese baw-bu-koo, this place is 2 under (better than) par. Maybe one day soon I will update this review with an experience in the sit down area. -

First of all let me say, that i had eaten and have order take out from the one on valley. This was my experience at the one at garvey and let me say: IT SUCKED!!!!!
So knowing that they only accept cash, i went ahead and withdrew a twenty from BOFA on atlantic ave. It was obviously raining so I had my hoody not because am gansgter but because AM FREAKING COLD! So I walk in with my girlfriend, and we order shrimp fried rice and pan shrimp. The waiter or cashier behind the counter went ahead and told me, its 12 something. I gave her the twenty, she went ahead and took it look at the twenty looked at me, looked at the twenty looked at me. Took another twenty compared the two, looked at me. Then took the twenty showed it to the other cook. They both looked at me started talking in their language. She finally after 15 minutes of inspecting my twenty for any fraud or fake, she gave up and put it in the register. Then the cook that had came from behind started chopping up some duck or meat was staring at me up and down. I guess because i had my hoody and looked TOO GANGSTER! During the rest of my time there the cook continue to stare at me and racially profile me. THEY ARE RUDE! And last time ill be at this restaurant at-least, this sam woo! -

I always go to Sam Woo BBQ whenever I'm in the mood for roast duck. This 5 stars review is for its roast duck only because that's the best roast duck I've tried in Los Angeles. It doesn't compare to roast duck in Asia but it's good enough for me. Order the roast duck and eat it with steam rice and chili oil. Drizzle some of the sauce on your rice and you don't care about your diet anymore. Eeww how about the fat under the skin? Don't eat it!! That's how I keep my girlie figure =P I tend to go to this Monterey Park location because the other locations are not as good as this one. How about the other dishes? I also like roast pork, salty fish & duck fried rice, wonton soup, squid with salt & pepper and Cheng Du beef. Don't expect good service here and remember it's cash only.
