My friend Rob took me and my wife, as we'd never been to Sam Tayor's
We were met and served by a wonderfully sunny woman who I believe to be Sam's daughter.
Great Bar-B-Que, great service and cold beer.
What else could you want?
First of all; I f I could give 0 stars I would.
BBQ should be smoked, moist, flavorful, delicious meats and sauce should be an option. The meat should taste great with or without sauce.
That said this is not BBQ. This is barbecued meat; roasted and boiled away in sauce resulting in stringy, chewy grossness. My grandmother from IOWA could make better boiled meat. And I was so excited to eat these chips I've been hearing about but half of them were under cooked and chewy. How hard is it to fry potatoes, seriously? Chips. Should. Not. Be. Bendy.
In addition the service here is absolutely terrible. Food took forever and service is SLOooooW. The worst part is no one seems to care. Everyone has a tough day once in awhile but be aware of what your guests are feeling about your food.
Another one bites the dust.
Where is everybody?
It took about 45 minutes to get our food and the appetiser came out the same time as our food! The appetiser of rib tips and potato chips were cold from sitting under out for so long and our rib dinners were barely warm. The waitress apologized and explained that they were very short handed BUT none of the waiters/waitresses were hustling at all! They were hangin out hardly doing anything. It took forever to get refills on our drinks. It even took forever for them to give us our check and when we had cash out, we had to take it to our waitress because she never came back. Thank god we had cash, i can't imagine how long it would've taken if we had a credit card!
The dry ribs were really good but the BBQ sauce tasted like Bulls eye BBQ sauce.
Mac n cheese tasted really plain and boring= 2 stars.
coleslaw was watery=1 star.
Ribs 3 stars.
Baked beans tasted like they were from a can=1 1/2 stars.
Sweet tea was way too sweet.
The service sucked so much that i don't even want to come back!
Besides, there are much better BBQ joints in the Denver area than this place.
Went there for lunch on Friday and was kind of dissappointed in the Catfish Sammich. Bummer! The beans and chips were still delicious though so that made me happy.
The service is always great, lots of smiles.
I'll try something new next time and give an update!

I'm not so much a BBQ fan but I really enjoy Sam Taylor's.
I've been a few times including: once for… Read more »
I am not sure what everyone was bragging about, but here are some things that happened to me when I was there with my wife:
Ambiance: Seems like I was dining in a hut with a weird lay-out.
Service: I had to send smoke-signals to get any help.
Food: The mohave desert has more moisture than the brisket.
So if you are training for the show "Survivor", start here!
I looooves me some bbq!!
So, the 1st time I ate Sam Taylor's was when me and some co-workers ordered a meal for pick up. The ribs were out of this world!! The homemade chips will make you wanna slap yo mama!! And the peach cobbler...I can't take it!!!
...sigh
This is my husband and I's go to BBQ place.
Disclaimer: Not all of their side dishes are good. Avoid the potato salad and the beans.
What makes them so good you ask? The "Sam made potato chips". They are fresh lightly seasoned and available drenched in BBQ sauce or plain. Either way they are crispy bits of deliciousness.
All of their meats are amazing. I love the ribs, brisket and chicken though. I usually don't get chicken at a BBQ place because I can get that anywhere. Usually I get beef or pork. I am a certified POP (pall of pork). The Mac n Cheese is pretty tasty, not as saucy as I like, but very cheesy. Also, the coleslaw is delicious and homemade tasting.
They do not have different choices for barbecue sauces like some other places, but the one they have I think is perfect and tastes great on all of their meats.
This is a low-key place in an unassuming location. It is not to be missed though if you want authentic BBQ. Occasionally Sam even comes out and greets you.
Damn you Food Network and your Grillin' Week!
Day after day of nothing but bbq related programing. I watched shows from people that I would normally not waste a second on just because I love all things bbq. Years ago when I lived at home and we had a large grill. We would cook on it all the time. All year long. I remember it snowing heavily outside and we would be on our patio watching it as we cooked on our grill. That's how much we loved it. One year I made 4th of July dinner for our family and our neighbors. Baby Back Ribs cooking on the grill for 7 hours to where you lift the bone and the meat just falls off. Makes me want to go out and buy a big large grill right this moment.
However we have a teensy weensy Coleman propane grill and must make do with that. Anyway...
after a long week of watching all those shows. My girlfriend and I needed to go out and get some good barbeque (or barbecue). I come to my trusty Yelpers for help with finding the right place to go. Sam Taylor's was what caught my eye. It also helped that it's not too far from us as we were dying for some ribs.
We got there in the early afternoon on Sunday and there was only a few cars in the parking lot. Good, good. We walked inside and smell just hit us. Mmmmmmm... the place was calm, a few people inside enjoying their meals. We were seated right away and had a look at the menu. We both ordered the 4 rib meal. Both got baked beans, I got sam's chip and she got potato salad.
My girlfriend is not a pork eater, but I will say this. She is a total convert after eating these ribs. I am quite proud of her actually, because she's a white meat, off the bone type of gal, but that day, she had sauce on her hands and face. That's how much she/we love them.
Their chips were chewy and cripsy. The baked beans were delicious. The ribs as mentioned were so good. The meat came right off the bone and it was so favorful and the sauce was pretty tasty too. Not too spicy and not too sweet. I was a had a thickness to it. Definitely something they could bottle and sell. Not the end all, be all, but pretty damn good.
Definitely a place I can see myself going back to on a regular basis. My only complaint and it can't even really be called that is I wanted to order a beer and sadly they don't have any of my favorites on tap or in bottle there. I see a couple more visits this summer to Sam's.
This place just wet my bbq whistle so to speak and I'm headed to a few other places and soon hopefully :)
Riblicious! BBQ-tiful! Finger-licking Good!
Stopped in on a Sunday for lunch and the place was basically empty, which worried me a little. There was no one in the front of house to seat us or give us menus, so we just picked a table and waited. Finally, the very sweet waitress came out to greet us. Seems that she was in charge of the whole place that day.
My boyfriend had the Poke dinner with mac and cheese and coleslaw. I had the two meat meal with ribs and brisket with the same side items. The ribs literally fell off the bone, as promised. The brisket was tender and flavorful. The mac and cheese wasn't your normal mac and cheese--it had more texture to it, but I liked it.
I wish they didn't put quite so much sauce on the meats, but now that I know this, I'll just request less next time. We both left stuffed and satisfied and happy to have found a really good BBQ place in Denver. I plan to go back and try the chicken and hot links.
Definately start with the Homemade Potato Chips with BBQ Sauce. Then move on to the Rib Tips. Sooo loaded.
Sam Taylors is some of the best BBQ I've had around town. I love just about everything, but I really reccomend the "BBQ Poke Dinner". So Good!
Service has always been very prompt and courteous. Sammy comes out from cookin' every now and then just to say "hi" and see how things are. I would have to say its one of the most friendly atmospheres I have seen in a restaraunt. The only thing better than the service is the food, and thats a good thing.
The atmosphere isn't the most luxurious and sometimes it seems pretty messy, but I'm there for the food.
The man and I went here last night, and it was so effing good that we ate in utter silence and didnt notice that we hadn't said a word to each other for the entire meal until after we got in the car. I had the chicken sammich - almost all white meat, not greasy, perfect amount of sauce. Husband had the brisket sammich - again not greasy at all. Their homemade potato chips make me weep with happiness and the mac and cheese is some of the best i've ever had.
The place totally looks like a basement rec room from the 80's but I feel thats part of it's charm. The service was quick and friendly. I just cant say one bad thing about this place. Hands down favorite BBQ in all of Denver. Period.
Arrived at lunch time and was greeted by a pleasant server. I did a two meat combo of Smoked Brisket and a Texas Hot Link. For sides "Real" Mac N Cheese and "Sam Made Chips" Any place that will make their own potato chips definitely takes the time to do things right. The Texas Hot Link was hot and smokey. I was pleasantly surprised. The brisket was thinly sliced and melt in your mouth tender. The only thing missing was more smoke flavor on the brisket. Both meats came covered in sauce, (I've noticed this about Colorado Bar-B-Q) and the sauce was pretty darn good, but I'm not a covered in sauce type person. The Mac N Cheese was one of the the best I've had at any restaurant. The owner took the time to meet and greet just about everybody in the dining room during my visit. You can tell he takes great pride in this establishment and it shows. They have live Jazz on "Jazzy Thursdays", and it looks like it would perfect for a place of this size. There is a bar and well placed big screen TV's throughout. When I come back through, I'd love to watch a football game and toss back some ribs here. It's has a local vibe, but everyone was welcomed with a smile. Probably one of the friendliest places I've been to so far.
A person can put their bbq sauce on sh t and it will taste good.
This is my favorite barbeque place in town. I've never had anything but the barbeque beef sammich with the homemade fries, but when you fall in love at first bite, why stray? Eating in can be a let down, and they frequently run out of peach cobbler, but the exquisite heat of their hot sauce makes up for it. Either have By Jeeves deliver it to you or get it to go for optimal enjoyment.
My room at the Cherry Creek Hotel wasn't quite ready, so I was looking for a place close by to have lunch while I waited. The place wasn't nearly as dive-y as I thought it was going to be from the descriptions, and everybody working there was really nice. From the signs out front ("it only takes one rib..."), I probably should have ordered the ribs. But the idea of eating ribs for lunch just wasn't appealing, so I had the BBQ Poke sandwich which was essentially a pulled pork sandwich. I was disappointed to find that the standard side item for the sandwiches was potato chips since I really wanted macaroni and cheese. So, of course, I ordered the macaroni and cheese too.
When the pulled pork sandwich arrived, it was much smaller than I expected it to be. Maybe I'm just used to 1 lb.+ meatball sandwiches, so I expected to see a gigantic pulled pork sandwich. But it was tasty and more than enough food. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the potato chips weren't Lay's or something like that - instead, they were legitimate, homemade potato chips. Yummy. I was a little disappointed by the mac and cheese which didn't seem particularly flavorful and actually a bit watery - I don't know why it was watery.
The food was fine but it wasn't even close to the best BBQ I've had. Next time, I'll have to try the ribs...
4.5 stars of delicious goodness. Sam Taylor's remains my favorite bbq spot of all time. The meat on the ribs fall off the bone. The sammiches are the bomb too.
I will definitely make a stop at Sam T's the next time I go back to Denver.
Walking inside Sam's I was taken back to BBQ joints down in Texas. It looks clean and minimal but Sam's comes with a "kitchen sponge needs a bath" smell. While sitting at the bar awaiting the take out, I noticed things were a bit sticky. Quick service from what appeared to be the only server/host/waitress in the joint. Very pleasant and chatty.
How was the grub? Good grub. The pulled beef sammich was tasty though a bit heavy on the sauce. The sauce has a hint of a kick and not so sweet. My boy loved his hot links sammich. Meats were placed on white sub buns. The bite would have been better on a puffy cloud of dough. The homemade chips were disappointing. No flavor and soggy. Lots of salt & pepper with ketchup made them edible. But hey doesn't that fix everything?
Overall I'd grab to go again, but I'll think of a different side dish. Not the best BBQ in Colo but it's close and tasty.
We have been going to Sam Taylor's Bar-B-Que for along time. We always do take out and have never dined in. After reading the review on Yelp about the peach cobbler, i had to try it. I suggest that if you are going to do take out that you don't take out the peach cobbler. It was stuffed in a styroform cup and it was not very tasty after it had sat for a while (a while meaning while we ate dinner @ home). I think that it would have been good if we had dined-in, but i don't suggest that you do it as a take out item. The BBQ is always the best so we will keep coming back, we just won't order the peach cobbler.
This is some pretty good BBQ.
We visited Sam's on a Sunday night a little later into the dinner hours and it showed. Service was a little slow and it took almost 40 minutes to get our food. That said we hung in there for the food, which Yelpers have said is pretty darn good.
Our food finally showed up and it was worth it! My wife ordered the Rib Tips dinner with potato salad and baked beans. I ordered the combo plate with beef brisket and ribs with potato salad and mac 'n cheese as my sides.
My wife loved the rib tips and the baked beans. The brisket on my combo was fantastic and the ribs were HUGE! The sauce was a bit heavy but with just enough kick to have another bit or two. The portions were very generous and we both took a box out with us for later. Sam's also has a great sweet tea to wash it all down with. Be sure to ask for it by name.
As another reviewer said the place is in need of some Spring cleaning, but was on par with any other BBQ joint I've been to including places in the South.
All in all Sam's is a great spot for BBQ on the run and will be sure to leave you feeling like you finally accomplished something.
pleasantly surprised by sam taylor's. we rolled in half an hour before closing and ordered a tableful of combo plates and a hot link sammich (me). i can't claim to be a big barbecue fan - usually the liquid smoke and overly sweet sauce doesn't equal a good meal - but i enjoyed the food immensely.
one of my friends loves the brisket, which i don't agree with since it depends heavily on a dousing of sauce to be good, but the ribs were tender, and the mac and cheese is awesome. homemade chips were an applaudable efffort... but were a bit soggy. greens at barbecue joints are always massively overcooked, which the green beans were in keeping with. but the sauce was on hit, and since it covers just about everything... i have to say i'm now a fan.
they also have sweet tea, which scores points as i am a fan. the service was fine - very friendly throughout, but told us as we were paying that their credit card machine "shut down" a couple of hours before so only cash would work. ? more a nod to our last-minute arrival, i think, than any credit card machine malfunction. whatevs. it was still good.
This place is ok with the BBQ but their mustard greens and chips were awesome. So... I don't know if that's good because this place IS a BBQ joint. Their ribs were good but nothing awesome. The brisket was pretty chewy and was heavily relying on the sauce to make it good. The sauce was good but wasn't like OMG good. Overall, the meat was kind of dry. I don't know if they were just not having a good cook day but it wasn't too impressive. I'll be honest. I've had some amazing BBQ in my life and this is not one of them. If you're craving it though, it's worth coming out here and getting your fix. This place ain't bad... but it's not awesome either. If you come here get mustard greens and the homemade potato chips for your side. They're good. Their peach cobbler was good too with a lot of nutmeg. It tasted homemade.
Awww Yelpers, I was so ready to love this place based on your reviews, but it was just ok for me. I had the Poke Dinner with Mac & Cheese and the chips. The pork was decent, but their sauce is very forgettable. And, the chips and Mac & Cheese were ok, nothing great. The service was not very great either. I wasn't sure what to do when I walked in, there were menus on a table, but no one to take me to a table, so I awkwardly sat myself. I also didn't get a refill and I sat for a while after I finished eating, waiting for her to bring the check. Sorry, I'd much rather have Brother's.
I love Sam Taylor's! I am not a bbq expert, so I can't even say what it is that I especially love about those ribs, but it's definitely my favorite bbq in town. The sauce is not vinegary at all, it's sweet and smoky and the meat melts in your mouth.
The other reviews are right--the decor is something to get over. Somehow I've never been bothered by it. Maybe because it's not trying to be something it's not. I do get the food "to go" there a lot though.
I recomend starting with the homemade potato chips smothered in bbq sauce. With or with out the bbq sauce these chips are the best I"ve had in all of Denver. They have top notch cole slaw and an amazing mac and cheese. I also look forward to their bbq beef brisket "sammiches" as they are called. I stay away from the beans or the potato salad because I just don't like them much. From the helpfull staff in the dinning room down to the son of the owner / founder working his magic in the kitchen and possibly coming out for a personal introduction and friendly bit of banter at each table. This is a great place to bring family for a bite when visiting. Now expect to see about three different types of tables and chairs all distributed by table type and chair type, seperated by section, kind of. Now the family portrait of the folks who own the place in the middle of the dinning room brings a huge smile to my face. Seeing the founder and his dream before your eyes you can feel his passion for this food !
The bbq is avgerage but the green beans are outta this world!! I was expecting a lot more from this place. I really don't know if I'll be back.
My Dad won't open up a BBQ restaurant, but for times when he doesn't throw down on the grill, this is the place to go. I love their sauce, and their ribs practically fall off the bone.
Went to Sam Taylor's for lunch today and I am still tasting that incredible BBQ flavor..not to mention I am still stuffed for a very minimum price. From the moment my colleges and I entered Sam's we were promptly greeted at the door and as we were being seated Sam himself came up to say "Hi" and make sure we were set. I haven't had this good of service or felt completely satisfied with a dining experience in a long time. Every one of us loved our dishes and I love the fact that it is mere minutes away from work, which could be a bad thing considering I am trying to lose weight!
My one time eating dinner at this place was awful. I'm thinking maybe we just went on an off night after looking at the other reviews, but our meals were all awful. I went with a group of 6 and we all ordered something different. Between the 6 of us we tried most of the sides and all got a mix of beef, ribs, and chicken. The service was unbelievably slow. 5 out of the 6 dishes came out cold. The sides all came out at different times and were not always what we had ordered. None were very impressive either. And, everyone's meat was chewy. Chewy and Cold! Not what I want when I go to eat BBQ!
After all the good reviews we were surprised to see this place almost empty when we rolled in at 8PM on a friday. (We found out later that they close at 9... apparently its not a night hot spot.)
We waited a LITTLE long because they were getting ready to close, I'm sure. But the service was great and the food was outstanding.
The portions are pretty huge. In fact they accidentally made too much for one of my items, and just threw the extra in to be nice.
As far as the food goes, its definitely some top of the line bbq. The ribs do fall off the bone, and the pulled pork was very tasty. The wings were ok... and the home made chips are outstanding (as long as they are crunchy.) About the only complaint about the food is that maybe they slather on a LITTLE too much bbq sauce standard. We would've liked a little less on there and have them give us a bottle to add more as we please.
Overall... great experience. Will eat there again, but maybe during a more busy time.
Sam Taylors was great authentic bbq. Great ribs and brisket. Better than a no frills place but this is straight bbq in a decent sized place with a parking lot and casual pleasant ambience. Nice music too. This place nailed the spare ribs which are more challenging to cook than baby back cut ribs. And when they are done right they are much better too. This is how they do them at Sam's. Low and slow and it shows. No hurrying up and ruining the product like so many other places. Service was good. Everything including the salad was fresh perfect and tasty. Chips are to die for. The onion rings are breaded and fine but I prefer beer battered. Ive been to several joints around Denver and this one is the best so it gets five stars from me.
I sure do love me some Sam Taylor's Bar ba que! Don't care for the sauce but the ribs are delish. They are skimpy on the sides and the restaurant needs some merry maid attention but you really don't come for the ambiance.
Ribs and homemade chips were fantastic. Skip the mac-n-cheese and the baked beans; they were entirely forgettable.
When I first entered the restaurant after having promised my wife good bbq ribs - I must say that I was a little apprehensive. The restaurant is very minimilastic in its decor. The tables were a little sticky. Just didnt look like a place that ran very well.....
But wait till the ribs arrive - they were by far the best I have ever had. The meat was tender and just fell off the bone - awesome. Next time I am going to try their brisket which looked just as good.
The price is also great - I think I paid about $13 for 6 bones - much less than other places I have been to and they were big BONES. The people were courteous and Sam Taylor makes his rounds meeting and greeting the customers - makes it feel like a family run business.
So look past the appearance and taste the food - they have some of the best BBQ food in Denver.
(Only reason I take away one star is for the appearance and sticky tables - the food deserves all 5 stars though).
Didnt care for the Sam Taylor larger or the sides.
Will definetly take my friends there when they come into town.

Sam Taylor's used to be a weekly night out for us at a time when Q was the order of business but that day has passed. ST's was a bit of a compromise for us because I'm a long, long, time fan of M&D's and their "HOT!" sauce and great smoke blend but the family loved the rib tip appetizer at Sam's with the huge pile of "chips" and more deliciously smoked tips than could be eaten. The family feel at Sam's was also a big draw and Sam himself always made us welcome. He would bring us out a basket of chips and sauce to munch on while we decided how much food we could eat. We don't get over there as often since I've been on a "Q "at home kick and sadly the last time we were there, the crowd was a lot thinner than it used to be (I wonder if it's because the portions have gotten smaller?). Hopefully I just hit an off night because this is a very good "Q" joint.
For some great bbq come down to Sam Taylor's for relatively inexpensive down home bbq meal. The meats are all cooked well and the sauce, while a bit heavy, tastes great.
i took a girl out to eat at sam's, and she straight up got down on the ribs. it's that damn good!
