So I came here recently for the Thoroughbred Half Marathon. It wasn't very well organized but this was not Sam Houston Race Park's fault, but the promoters. It was very cool to have a horse start out with you for the first part of a 13.1 mile race. I have to give it up to SHRP though. They are constantly setting up events from races, to concerts, and festivals.
I have been here for the Horse racing and that too can be a lot of fun. They also simulcast a lot of different tracks including dog tracks so you can find a little bit of anything to bet on.

This is a great place to spend a night doing something out of the ordinary whether it be going to a concert or watching the races. More recently I went to the park for Ziegfest which included some great country bands. Who ever planned the event did a fantastic job! I was worried about missing bands due to their being 2 stages, but they stages were right next to each other! This prevented the lag time between artists and made it enjoyable! I wish there would have been races this past weekend because that would have added to the fun of the day! I have been to other shows at this venue and it's always a great time whether you're seeing a popular country act to an underground band like Ghostland Observatory this is a great venue & all around fun place to go!
I love taking either my girlfriend or my friends from out of town here whenever there is live horse racing. Fun date night / night out.. 5 bucks to get in, and you can bet a dollar on a horse.. fun times!

technically, i'm not writing a review for the actual race park...i'm writing about the ziegen bock festival held on the grounds. i couldn't find it under events/places, so i figured this was the best way to list it. i had one of the best times EVER at this year's zieg fest. if you like combination texas country/rock-fusion, the line-up at this music festival is usually amazing. this year, we showed up to see bob schneider, roger craiger, reckless kelly, and cross canadian ragweed. the event kicked off earlier in the day--around 2:00 pm, but we showed up around 7 to catch these later acts. don't go if you need fancy things/foods/indoors to have a good time. this is an extremely laid-back concert held in a field near the race park. two stages alternate acts hourly, cold beer is on tap under tents, and port-o-potties are lined up along the side. the crowd's pretty young, peppered with the occasional older couple/child. come here if you're looking to party with a fun crowd in a simple, music-loving atmosphere. very fun and i will be back next year, provided the line-up is as cool as it was this year.
