Review from Suzanne U.
Manhattan, NY
I've been coming here for years and it's the best. I live out of town now, but whenever I come back I always make it a point to come have a meal here.
The restaurant has huge floor to ceiling windows which creates a bright and welcoming space. On one side is the seating, and on the other is the bar and open-plan kitchen. This makes it a very dynamic and inviting atmosphere. The servers are fantastic; friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. Of course the selling point is the food itself. Italian pasta does not come better than it does here!
On top of the great food and service, each meal also comes with soup or salad. I find this very rarely and frankly, it's quite wonderful. Also, you can get large carafes of very good wine for a modest price. Again, rare and quite wonderful. In the Detroit metropolitan area, this is my top choice of restaurants. -

Yes, this place is a chain. And, we all like to beat up on chains, right. But, Salvatore Scallopini does not feel like a chain, if that helps you like it. It feels cozy or intimate, better yet, comfortable like an old sock.
I have been eating here for years. The food is good or better then average. I don't think the food has ever blown me away. But, then again the price of food is not that high either. Salvatore Scallopini is the perfect place for a nice meal with friends or with anyone you are not trying to impress. If you want to impress go to Morton's, Ruth Chris, etc. For my money this is a solid place. -

I know it's a chain but it's freaking good man!!
Way better than the other place down Gratiot that rhymes with Schmolive Schmarden!
My BF and I decided last minute to go to dinner on Valentine's Day. I know I know but I didn't feel like cooking. So we head over to Sal's to find a line but the wait was only 15 mins. HOORAY!!
The uber friendly hostess took great care of everyone when they walked in and made everyone as welcome as possible while they waited. She really knew what she was doing in terms of seating people and keeping the crowd moving.
Our waitress was beyond nice! She was fast and made sure we had everything we wanted.
We had an appetizer, salad, wine, and our entrees and everything was great. My Chicken Francese was perfectly cooked and tender and the sauce was great not salty over over done like some places. I love a great sauce and mine was yummers!!! My BF had the Villo de creama which was AWESOME!! He ate every last bite on his plate, you would think i starved the dude!!
I do love this Sal's in the warmer months and sitting outside just rapping, eating bread and drinking a nice bottle of Pinot Noir.
I've consistently been happy with this Sal's. Again i know its a chain but I do like it. So there!! -

I love love love the food here. I have been coming here for years. The creamy ramano dressing is the best, so is the chicken tosca. Always have great service from wait staff. The only complaint I have is management. Had a problem with shells in my food and it was inedible. Couldn't eat my food. Still paid for it. Even after I wrote a letter on their website, no response or apology. Good food though!

Scallopini in Eastpointe is a great choice for Italian food. The service is great, no complaints.
The food is fresh and delicious. I am very picky when it comes to Italian food, and find that the food here is not as heavy as other Italian restaurants in the area. I highly recommend ordering off of the specials menu at dinner which always seems to have something for everyone at the table. -
Review from Sal G.
I had to stop here. It was the name. I know, bad way to make a choice on my part, but I had to stop. Once we were stopped, I figured, "What the hell." We were seated immediately and recognizing items on the menu that we liked, we had the order set before our server arrived. When the server did come, she brought bread with arrabbiata sauce on top of olive oil for us to snack on and took our drink orders while also taking our dinner order:
Tedeschi red wine
Water
Meatball with red sauce
Vitelli piccata with angel hair and marinara with tomatos and balsamic vinagrette
Veal parmesan with penne and meat sauce with tomato basil soup
I immediately went for the bread and my friend asked for some butter. I figured I would try the concoction on the table in front of me and it was just that -- a concoction. The sauce was cold and gelatinous and ruined what would have been a fairly good olive oil. I don't know why they did that, but I don't think that they tasted it ahead of time. My wine and butter arrived and I put the arrabiata mixture to the side.
The wine was nothing special. I couldn't quite tell if it was just normally flat and single layered, if the wine was old, or if I just needed to let it breathe. I settled on the need to breathe and moved on to the tomato soup that had arrived. The color was a very light red with a very nice, silky texture. Unfortunately, it tasted more like a Cream of Cream soup. There was no tomato nor basil to be found gracing my palate. I didn't finish the soup, there was no reason. It didn't taste bad, but it didn't taste good either.
As we waited for the entrees to arrive, I looked around the small interior. At the front of the building there was a little alcove where people gathered in a "Cheers" fashion -- they all appeared to know each other. They were having a good time, but they also appeared to have imbibed more than would be recommended. The rest of the building was split into the dining and kitchen sections with the dining area being on the interior of the building. It had a typical, if not stereotypical decor about it.
The entrees arrived as I finished my visual tour and the presentation was nice. As I bit into my food, though, I was disappointed to find that another piccata had been murdered at this restaurant. I tasted some of the veal and found to to be slightly below average in its flavor and to be somewhat tough in its texture. Overall, the entrees were fairly low on flavor and balance. I tried my wine again and found that it fell into the same category of flavorlessness. I am going to blame an old, opened bottle for the wine, but the rest of the food was just not acceptable.
I don't think I can look at the name the same.Listed in: Fizzled Firestarters, Mary Brickell Village Syndrome

My wife and I have been going to this restaurant for years. We started at the one on 12 mile rd.
The pasta is homemade. The sauce is excellent. The veal parm is the best I've ever had - bar none!
The Eastpointe location is quaint and very European in decor. The music being played is quiet and Italian ALWAYS! No annoying pop music or garbage being played. Simple Italian decor, music and cuisine.
They have a nice wine list. The service is ALWAYS excellent.
I highly recommend trying this place. It's a great place for nice quiet date. Save yourself some trouble and leave your kids at home - they won't like it.
The prices are quite reasonable and this place blows some of the other high-end joints out of the water with quality and price and atmosphere.
I'm editing my review for now......my wife and I have gone to SS recently (twice) and both times the pasta wasn't rinsed. My wife returned an entire bowl of sauce water each time.......they're slacking off and need to go back to paying attention to detail! It's everything in my opinion.
Wake up Salvatore before it's too late !!! You were the best, but you're going downhill quickly!!!! -

We're finding that we're eating dinner here more often ...
The logic goes like this ...
- Friday night ...
- Tired from a full week of work ...
- Would really like to eat out ... something delicious ...
- A glass of wine would be nice ...
- Combined with a Non-Smoking restaurant ...
Somehow, Salvatores floats to the top of the list ...1 Previous Review: Show all »

I try to avoid chain restaurants and any place in a strip mall, but this is an exception. Excellent quality Italian at a very good price. I've never had anything I didn't like and they give you a ton of food. Entrees are served with bread, olive oil and parmesan, salad, and a side of pasta or polenta (the polenta is great). The wine list is very good and reasonably priced.
The dessert profiteroles are they best I have had.
They are opening up a new location in Grosse Pointe this fall.Listed in: Detroit Rocks

Why eat in this cookie cutter chain restaurant when there are so many good Italian joints on the Eastside?
Honestly, I've eaten at this place 3 times and I've never walked away satisfied.
Too oily, over-cooked, horrible service, poorly seasoned, salad over-dressed...you name it, this place screws it up.
The GP location does have a nice bar and the calamari and the friendliness of the bar staff is nice, but I can't recommend eating a full meal here unless your idea of nice "eye-talian" is Olive Garden. There are just too many better locations for similar prices within a 5 minute drive. Just say no to cookie cutter chain restaurants! -

Olive Garden who? I don't know how Olive Garden stays in business with this gem less than a mile away from it. Great italian food at its best, part of you will sit there wondering how Eastpointe got such a great restaurant in basically the middle of a plaza with a Subway, Starbucks and Blockbuster.
Always get the creamy romano with your salad, its their house dressing that is a garllicy ranch type dressing. As for entrees where do I begin. My favorite dish is pesto genovese which is noodles with pesto garlic and pine nuts. I usually get it on penne and add chicken to it. If im not in the mood for pesto my mind goes to the spinach ravioli with a ricotta filling also a succulent choice. Third if for some reason im looking to really shake it up I go the the Penne Palomino. Which is chicken on penne with sweet peppers and a palomino sauce, (a mix up of alfredo and marinara.) No matter what visit one of Salvatore's many locations its sure to be a big hit with everyone. -

Very good home made pasta. Very good red sauces. My favorite is the pasta mezzgiorno with sausage. Fresh salads, polite, attentive waitstaff, good bread.

I lived in eastpointe for a good part of my life and this place was always a favorite. Consistently good food, decent wines at decent prices, and great desserts, including cannoli. My only really complaint is the menu doesn't seem to change as much as i expect from an italian restaurant.
