This is where I fell in love with Dali.  I would recommend taking the walking tour of the place. I had a very informative, passionate woman that explained all about Dali's life and the transition of his art.

After the tour I spent more time on the pieces, enjoying them completely. I even have a reprint of his piece, "Girl With Curls" on my wall.

The setup of the museum is amazing and they have a really cute store full of things I would actually buy!

This review may be a bit biased since I'm writing about a museum dedicated to one of my favorite artist of all time.

In this museum, you'll see the versatile style of Dali and the transitions he made throughout the years.

I've always loved how cryptic his art is and I was finally able to fully embrace it while standing two feet away from his beautiful masterpieces.  I literally had shivers going up and down my spine as I noticed all the subtleties and hidden messages in each piece. You could really get a sense how unique and eccentric his personality was after viewing each one.

What I loved most was that I walked out of that museum feeling a much deeper appreciation for him and all his work.  It definitely brought out an emotion in me that I've never felt for any artist before.

It took me way to long to finally come and see this amazing collection. Having grown up with a Dali fan, my fathers passion was art and his Idol was Dali, I had never understood exactly the complexities that made him so to my dad until I became an adult.

My fascination has grown over the years and it was high time to come here and experience it. The beauty of this collection aside from the vast amount of works that are here, is the fact that there are pieces from all of his experimental stages as well.

The psychology behind is work is so incredibly sinuous that his work, once you read the reasoning behind each painting or sculpture, becomes fascinating and a study of a very multifaceted genius brain.

It is sad that Freud died without having had a chance to psychoanalyze this unique persona.
Intriguing? Absolutely! Entertaining? Yes!

I agree with a previous Yelper it is a bit pricey, but most museums are.

The gift shop has great items!  I wish I had gotten that bracelet!!  I guess I have to go back now.

I'm really sorry to say that the arts isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of most cities in Florida. There are exceptions of course, and St.Petersburg is one of them. There are great museums in this city, especially downtown. What is even better is that you have the ability to spend time with the exhibits if you have a spare day. They aren't full of screaming school children or tourists bumping into you and sending you careering into a priceless work of art like in D.C.

The Dali is definitely a gem in Florida. We are lucky to have it. There are many significant works ranging in style and following Dali's transformation as an artist closely. I'm excited to see what the new museum will end up looking like. They have guided tours and really an extensive collection. The gift shop also offers interesting and unique items at a range of prices.
I have to admit that it took me a long time to stop in here. I finally did it for the first time this year. It was worth the admission cost of about $10-$17

I recently visited the museum in St. Petersburg while on vacation visiting some friends there.

First off, the museum admission is pretty pricey for the size of the museum. However, I enjoy supporting arts organizations and institutions so I understand the price helps them run the place and probably only covers 20% of their funding.

I was expecting much more art before my visit as a friend told me it took about 2 hours to get through the museum. I was surprised when I only spent about 40 minutes viewing the entire collection. I was also expecting more recognizable works of Dali (which are mostly located in the museum by his hometown or in more reputable museums)

My favorite work was by far the infamous Lincoln painting. Pretty neat! What was also interesting were reading the plaques next to each piece which taught me a lot about Dali and his life.

Not sure if this is a temporary exhibit, but in the rear of the museum were some pictures and media examples from somewhere in Italy. They had a photo montage of a war torn European city that was used as the setting of "The Adventures of Baron von Munchausen". I immediately recognized some of the settings and thought this was pretty neat. However, nothing helped me tie in how this exhibit related to Dali.

Another thing to note is that they just broke ground on a new Dali musuem somewhere else in St. Petersburg. The info in their gallery didn't say where it was, but was soliciting donations for the effort.

My friend who was recently leaving to move to Portland, OR wanted to visit this museum as she had never been. Being a fan of his work, I jumped at the chance to tag along and revisit some of my favorite Dali art pieces.

Whether you believe Dali was an artistic genius or a madman, his work speaks for itself in all its complex and elaborate beauty. By far my favorite piece is the Hallucinogenic Toreador. I could look at this piece for hours and notice something new that I hadn't noticed before.

If you're in the area, it's well worth a visit. And even if you're not, it's still worth the drive.

What an intriguing artist Dalí was!  What a great museum!  It's difficult to discuss individual works because the exhibits change, but I thought the painting showing God's view from above of his Son on the cross was incredible!  Just looked at the Dalí Museum website to try to get the name of this work, but I can't find it.

Plan to take your time looking around:  just when you think you've "seen" a picture, another one pops up from within it.

How could I forget to review this museum? I went here over Thanksgiving break & on a rainy, boring Sunday afternoon I popped into the Dali museum. What a treat!

Since I still have my student id & look about 12 years old, I got in for $10.00-score! I wandered around the museum with my brother & mom trying to be sophisticated, artsy and deep. Unfortunately, we're a bunch of immature clowns & couldn't help but talk about the random genitalia or body parts that frequented many of his paintings. It actually made the trip a bit more enjoyable & put me in a much better mood since the sun was not shining on my last day in warm, beautiful St. Petersburg.

The museum is fantastic, new, and chalk-full of Dali paintings. Pieces that I've seen in books or posters, but also pieces that I've never seen before. I love that!

The gift shop is awesome as well. I bought two prints of my favie Dali paintings to hang in the condo & postcards for friends. I could have bought the whole store, which ranged from Dali movies to Dali calendars. From Dali inspired jewelery to Dali inspired martini glasses. If you're ever in the St. Pete's area, I would definitely check this place out. It seems to be pretty unknown, so it's never busy & you can take your time enjoying all the beheaded women, melting clocks, and random penises.

Really enjoyed your Museum and was so glad we went. I have over the years tried to see as much Dali artwork in person as possible, and this was the most I have seen in one location. I learned a lot and was thrilled to see in person, some of the really large paintings including one of my favorites ... I believe its called "Discovering America". Anyway the visit there was one of my cherished memories of our visit to Florida.

I have been a long time Dali fan! Finally I visited the museum on my birthday a few months ago. I had always dreamed of seeing his work up close and personal - it was amazing! Even my husband, who is more of a "sports guy", was in 'aaahhhhh'.

I really loved the true passion of the associates who worked there.

Can't wait to see the new museum as soon as it is complete!

Ol' Sal was a trip!

Going to Tampa and St. Pete for mom's birthday was an even bigger trip.  We shuttled around old Tampa for a while then headed over the bay to the Salvador Dali museum.  It was one of those rare [sic] hurricane type days. The car was being slammed sideways from the driving rain and saltwater mist blowing across the bridge. Once in St. Pete the wind and rain seemed to just disappear!   Sal is that you looking down on us?

I was almost excited to see the place looking deserted. No lines, no large crowds no needing to buy your tickets weeks or months in advance.  I had a sinking feeling the collection inside might be a bit anemic, after all we had to wait forever to see the Dali exhibit in Los Angeles' LAMACA.  Not the case in St petersberg!

Everything from the road going show had found its way home. All the paintings, sculptures and photographs were on display including the huge Disney movie backdrop and multimedia installation.  Many of Dali's works didn't get to go on the LA vacation, they all stayed in Florida safe and warm inside the aging museum complex.  There is plenty of room to move about and some well placed benches for you to sit and take it all in.  This was a nice contrast to the cattle herd technique of LACMA's Dali show. The docents are passionate and well informed.  I suggest you take one of the guided tours. Everything here is paced so you can fully enjoy Salvador's work even if you don't understand it.

The gift shop is awash in overpriced Dali nic-knacks and t-shirts.  Yes I bought a few things to bring home and signed up for their mailing list.

All in all i feel this is the best place to experience Dali's many sur-ralities.

I recommend doing  the free tour; our docent was a treat. She was informative and engaging.

Also if you come on Thursdays between 5-8pm, the admission is $5.

This was my first visit and I was delighted. The museum is located right along the water and they are working on constructing a larger museum nearby. Though this museum is small, you can still spend a good amount of time admiring Dali's work.

I went to see the Dali museum two weekends ago. O my gosh! I love his work! He is one of my favorite artists and it was such a treat to see his stuff up close. There is something about seeing an artist's work live and in person on its original medium vs. seeing it through someone else's camera. I didn't realize how HUGE some of his paintings were. And my very favorite "The Hallucinogenic Toreador" was even more beautiful in real life.

Be beware, they will watch you like a hawk if they find out you bring a camera inside. Lol.

Take the free tour.

I'm not usually one to do the whole tour thing.

Glad I did this time. I learned a lot about him and it gave me a good background of his work.  After,  I was able to find more meaning  that I wouldn't have seen before and appreciated his art a lot more.

I really like his big pieces--be sure to check them out.

It's a good museum.  The gallery is well-done, and you'll learn a lot about Dali.  The tours are informative.  They have changing exhibits that don't necessarily feature Dali but can be really interesting.  In all, I think the curator has treated the artist well, and they've created an appropriate setting for the work.

That said, after multiple visits (taking new friends to see it, visiting the changing exhibits), I am sure of something: I don't like Dali's art.  I found him to be an excellent marketer of his personal "brand."  He was groundbreaking in the way he presented himself and his art. But I find his work too gimmicky and don't enjoy it.

But if you are a fan of the artist, you will LOVE this museum.  And if you aren't, you'll still enjoy the other exhibits or events.

This place is all the other Yelpers have said and more. I love the romantic setting, on the water. Bring someone you love and make out on the grass -- what a great way to spend the day!

We were lucky to get to see The Persistence of Memory up close while it was still there. Before visiting this museum, that was probably the only Dali I had name recognition for. I did study up a bit ahead of time so I could get the most out of the visit. I never realized he had such a comprehensive collection of work, and liked to work in so many different sizes!

One problem with the museum is the placement of the title cards. They are all placed at the beginning of the row of works. That means unless you know all the titles by heart, you're running back and forth from one side of the wall to the other, to put the title with the piece. Aggravating! The cards would better serve the guests and the art by being side by side with the piece they're describing. I didn't go on a docent-led tour so I didn't have someone explaining each piece by title, but that usually isn't my style, especially with art. I like to contemplate it solo.

This is a discretion-advised exhibit: parents, if you haven't been here, I encourage you to peruse Dali's work online or from a book to get an idea of what kinds of images show up in some of the paintings before bringing  your children here. I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all age kids have to be before bringing them here, just use your judgment. Some of the images are sexually graphic or otherwise more weird than you may be prepared to discuss.

The gift shop rules; I walked out with only postcards featuring mini-prints of my favorite Dalis but could have bought a lot more. Don't be in a rush when you come here. Allow yourself the luxury of contemplation because the art is that fascinating.

I love museums, so upon moving to Tampa, visiting the Dali museum was a must. Sweetie & I got there just in time to catch the last guided tour of the day. Definitely glad that we happened upon it -- totally by accident; I generally skip tours & do my own thing because I like to alternate between taking my time & skipping over stuff, and because they're usually boring.

But this tour was great; the guide gave us Dali's history in a nutshell at the beginning, then the history of the museum, & then as we went through the museum & she explained selected pieces, she went through more of his history. It definitely helped to understand his work.

It's not a huge museum, which I rather like because it means you don't get EXHAUSTED by the time you're halfway through it (SF Asian Art Museum, I'm talking to you); in fact, I had energy to spare when we were done -- which is not to say that we didn't take a thorough walk-through by ourselves after the tour was over.

I'd definitely love to go back & see the new exhibits as they rotate the art, and I'm DYING to buy the jigsaw puzzle they have in the gift shop.

We are very fortunate to have such a gem as this in our country. If you're a fan of Dali, this place is heaven. There are also walking tours of the museum, which was really great because the guides are especially knowledgeable of the housed work. I've read extensively about the artist and still learned new things from the guides.

If you are a fan, be prepared to spend too much in the gift shop!

Super cool gem in Trampa Bay.  It wasn't crowded at all when we visited so we had ample time and space to check out the pieces.  We had a very lovely docent during the guided tour.  The only glitches were:
a) this little prick that insisted on making comments to the docent like "you're fabulous" and "that's amazing" during the tour.  He was so irritating.  It was comical when he asked how to spell "Cezanne" - we think he thought it was a verb!
b) little kids that did not use inside voices and the parents that did not tell them to STFU.

This place is absolutely great otherwise!  Their gift shop was cool and not completely overpriced!

I always buy a few extra postcards when I am in the museum to send to my friends back home. They are jealous I am near such greatness hahaha. And if you join as a member, you get to attend opening night of each exhibit for free or cheap!

I've always respected Dali's work so the Dali Museum was on my list of must-do's on my trip.  The current exhibit which runs through June 1, 2008 is Daliwood: Dali & Film.  I've been familiar with his paintings but I had no idea he was involved in the motion pictures.

It was a treat to see The Persistence of Memory in person.  It's much smaller than I imagined it.  Even better, they recently introduced The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory.  I also got to view The Hallucinogenic Toreador which is a huge floor-to-ceiling canvas.  I always liked this piece and thought it was visually stunning.  It never occurred to me that it was one of his paintings within a painting since you have to look closely to see that the green dress on one of the Venus de Milo's is the toreador's necktie and you can see his face in her torso.  Totally trippy, hence the name of the work.

The museum was showing several films that Dali collaborated on.  The three minute dream sequence in Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound is the work of Dali.  The most impressive and interesting of the films was Destino, a seven minute animated short.  It started in 1946 as a collaboration between Walt Disney and Dali but was abandoned until the project was resurrected in 2003 .  A woman dances through a world inspired by Dalian symbols and themes.  It's as beautiful as it is bizarre.

There's a lot to love about the Dali Museum. The scope of the collection and the changing exhibits introduce you to many rarely seen works, as others have noted.

The $5 Thursdays is a terrific idea (although it didn't apply on our recent weekend visit) and the regular tours are probably very informative -- if you get the right docent. I wish I could say we did, but the chap who led our group on a Sunday afternoon seemed rushed and/or distracted, and he didn't really add much to the works.

Part of the museum was cordoned off while a new exhibit was being finalized. No big deal. But if there's one thing that disappointed us about the permanent (?) collection, it was the lack of context for many of the works. We asked at the desk for a museum guide (the pamphlet type, not docent) but didn't see one. And many of the paintings had nothing more than the title, materials, and year on the description placards.

Any artist's work benefits from that additional context -- notes about the content, influences, symbolism, etc. The masterworks all have that, but it would be useful to add those to more of the other works as well, so visitors wouldn't need to rely on the books in the gift shop or getting the right docent tour. We were fortunate to catch the Dali exhibit in Philly in 2005 and small but important touches like these made a big difference.

If the Dali Museum went just a bit further in this respect -- more detailed placards and a pamphlet with background info, maybe an audio tour? -- it would easily merit five stars. Regardless, this is still a stellar and unique collection, and it's worth spending a couple of hours marveling at the body of work this wildly creative genius left behind.

I love Salvador Dali, so my wife and I traveled from New Jersey down to St. Petersburg, Florida just so we could visit this museum. It was well worth it. The collection is phenomenal, a treasure trove of many of his most famous paintings, those that you have only seen in books, and some, equally impressive, that you probably have never heard of. His entire, prolific career is well represented here.
There is a large chamber devoted to the display of several of his greatest masterworks, including "The Ecumenical Council", "The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus", and "The Hallucinogenic Toreador". These paintings are over 12 feet high, and the detail is astonishing. Seeing it all at once is almost too much to absorb in one visit. If you like Dali, you owe it to yourself to make a trip to this museum.

My god, it's full of timepieces.  Big ones.

Unless you will be going to Spain, the Dali collection in St. Petersburg is the largest collection you can find.  The museum building itself is not very large, and I didn't run into crowds, but the display is complete.  There are paintings from his entire artistic life, from my arithmetic starting from about age 12 or 13, if I recall correctly.  I enjoyed these paintings quite a bit, despite their lack of usual Dali surrealist features.

Then Dali got older and got issues.  The master works are amazing - the sheer size of the paintings are impressive, but more so are the details and stories in the pieces.  I am no art critic, but I related to what I interpreted as his attempts to reconcile his religious beliefs against scientific inquiry, technology, progress, etc.  Or maybe he was just on acid.  I don't know, but I was amazed by the works and couldn't stop thinking of the man and the mind while I viewed the art.

We have all seen Dali in textbooks and on television, but you must see it up close.  The scale is the amazing, the cleverness at times horrifying.

I was never a big Salvador Dali fan.  I just never really understood his paintings, and his contributions didn't seem significant.  However, thanks to the wonderful docent that led us on a 1-hour tour of the exhibit, I am able to comprehend his brilliant madness to some degree now.  :-P

The museum itself is not very big, but because of the special exhibit on display now, it's currently housing most of Dali's most well-known works.  I've only ever seen some of these masterpieces in art books, though I did recognize a handful from the Tate Modern in London and other museums in the course of my travels.  It was wonderful to have each painting dissected carefully for me by the docent.

Also, at $5 a person (when you visit the museum after 5pm on Thursdays), it's definitely a worthwhile visit.  At the very least, you get to escape the heat.  :-)

A MUST for anyone who is in the Tampa Bay area. Dali was a prolific painter with such an interesting personal history and this musuem houses an amazing collection.  I don't want to give away too much, it's important to go and see these paintings for yourself -- you could sit for hours trying to figure out aspects of his work.  The big paintings towards the back are mesmerizing.

Dali may have been a touch crazy but that is what made him so good, no?

Sidenote: they also seem to choose good temporary exhibits to match - once while I was here they had a Warhol exhibit which was fabulous as well.

I love Dali.  He's my favorite surrealist and probably my favorite non-musical artist.  You can not look at Dali's work and not agree that he was a genius.  Well, I suppose you could but come on, do you really think that or are you just saying that because everyone loves Dali?

There is maybe not much to do in St. Petersburg, Fl but, by God, they have the Salvador Dali Museum and that counts for something in my book.

This is definitely a place that will spark conversation. My husband and I both appreciate art, but know little about it. But in the Dali museum, there is enough to keep you guessing for days what was in the artist's mind. We spent an afternoon there and would recommend it to everyone, art critic or just curious.

What a treat! Definitely my favorite part of my trip to St. Pete. We arranged to go on a Thursday night because it was only $5, but I wouldn't have minded one bit if we had to pay the full $15. Unfortunately we were not able to see Dali's "Biblia Sacra," as the room was being used to show a surrealist anime film. Boo.

I'm not normally a "let's spend lots of $$ in the gift shop to prove we've been here" kind of person, but this shop had plenty of cool stuff to offer that you'd want to show off back home. I walked away with two Dali mustaches (one for a gift and the other for me to wear on special occasions) and a print of my favorite Dali work, "The Temptation of St. Anthony."

I loved this museum! I'm a Dali fan and to see his work in person was amazing. One of the things that surprised me was the variation in the size of the art. Things that I always thought were normal sized are sometimes a story high and sometimes less than a foot high. He was crazy, but genius. Definitely check this place out.

I'm not an art lover.  Generally, I don't like museums for more than 10 minutes.  In my opinion, Dali painted some cool but very weird stuff.

But this place is great.  Take the tour, it is worth it.  It's free and will help you understand the weird stuff if you are like me.  Even on a sunny day, this is worth stopping by.  Thursdays after 5pm, admission is $5.

I'm still not an art lover and I still think Dali's stuff is weird and I'm still telling you that you should definitely go.

I loved it! If you like Dali's work, than this is a must. The quality of the place is nice and put together nicely. They even have movies going on throughout the museum, and a bench to sit if you want to watch. It's much bigger than I thought it was going to be. When you first walk in, its like "wow small" but as you watch through more, its much bigger. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I bought a t-shirt and my boyfriend bought a poster.

This is a great museum and one of the myriad reasons St. Petersburg is a wacky yet fabulous place.

If you want to see relatively unknown Dali works you should go, but really you should just go because Dali had no connection to St. Petersburg, FL whatsoever and it's just strange that we've got such a collection of his works.  My personal favorites are his landscapes and the lobster phone.

The gift shop is excellent. You can get most anything Dali there, including (if I remember correctly) perfume. Dali would not be insulted by this commercialism. They note on the tour his love for commercialism and advertising. And for his wife, who is represented in so many of his works.

During the summer the museum has happy hours on Fridays.  They also host traveling surrealist exhibitions so check the website.

It's really a must see.

Surprisingly, the largest collection of Dali works outside Spain is housed in a Florida city better known for its beaches than culture, despite the fact St. Petersburg boasts two major art museums in addition to this one. The surrealist is well-represented by a wide array of oil paintings, drawings, water colors, graphics, sculptures, photographs, and assorted objets d'art. The current exhibit presents works by American artists - including Pollack, Lichtenstein, de Kooning, and Rothko - who were influenced by the master. $5.00 admission after 5:00pm is an excellent deal only on Thursdays, when the museum is open late. The crowds we anticipated failed to materialize, and we were free to wander through the relatively empty galleries and absorb everything in the three hours we had. Art lovers instinctively will flock here, but hopefully those area visitors who are seeking sun and surf will stumble across it and find themselves duly impressed.
