I've been to Salut twice, with 4-star food and service each time.
It's a bit loud, but I didn't mind. The atmosphere is fun and the bathrooms are adorable and clean - always a plus. It seems to be a bit of a cougar bar - meh. They don't shy away from that reputation on their website, though. I don't think sitting at the bar would be my thing at this restaurant.
My favorites - the bread and butter they bring to the table. Few things in life are as great as real creamy butter. Awesome. The crab cake appetizer is great - not too small, the perfect size to share. I'm a huge fan of the fries with bearnaise sauce.. can't go wrong with that! I love the steaks here - even the hangar (cheap) steak tastes great and isn't tough. The filet oscar is amazing.. I guess when you combine my already favorite things - steak, crab, bearnaise sauce - you can't go wrong. The red velvet cake is delish - but I think it's the same cake at all of the Parasole restaurants. At least between Salut and the (now closed) Figlio. It's really good, and a huge portion.
Prices seem reasonable - husband and I did dinner right with a few glasses of wine, a shared appetizer, entrees for each and dessert and we came out under $125.
I've never been wowed by the host staff - they often act like they don't really have the time for you, maybe a little power-trippy. I feel that way about most host staff in the twin cities, though. Server envy, perhaps? All of the servers we've had have at Salut were fantastic. They know their menus, and it shows.
I live a few blocks from here and have only been a few times in 2 years. The main reason I don't like going back? The D-bag bartender who takes his role of "French" restaurant employee a little to much to heart. I went to France this summer for vacation and only ran into one server that equaled this pretentious bastard.
The food is good, and their specials are almost always convincing enough to get you to leave the menu for the greener pastures of the daily creation (short ribs were fantastic). This was also the first place I've ever had raw oysters and I continue to eat them today. They were great.
But that bartender. I get kinda angry just seeing him behind the bar when I bypass it for the restaurant. If you ever go, you'll know who he is by how he actively ignores all but the most attractive of the Edina cougar set. Lose him, and I'd give this place another star in a heartbeat.
If that bartender should ever happen to read this, dude, be less douche-y. You know who you are.
Now, let's just say this up front - I went to dinner knowing I was going to dinner in Edina. I mustered up a clean pair of jeans and fixed my hair. It was pretty rough.
In all honesty, I took a friend here and kind of warned her about the crowd that is sometimes there, but also said that it never bothers me. Seriously, who cares?
We had a GREAT dinner. Wine? Mmmmm. We split an app and burger, which they were absolutely fine with (they even cut the burger in half for us). The escargot was cooked well and the burger was really good! But before we even got any of that, we had their baguette. Or should I say baguettes. Oh yes, the two of us split two of them. Basically we each had a whole one. The bread was so good, but the butter!! It was whipped with salt in it. Oh, heaven, I love salt.
The burger and fries were just right. We had all intentions of ordering dessert, but our 2 loaves of bread had caught up with us (wonder how that happened). Well, as luck would have it, it was my friend's birthday, so our waiter brought us a red velvet cupcake! Woo hoo!
Okay. I usually don't even like cake - for me, it's more of a vehicle to eat frosting. Oh. my. gosh. That red velvet cake was amazing and easily some of the best I've ever had, and my friend agreed. It was sooooo gooooooood.
We walked out stuffed and skipped the bar afterwards. Too full! We both had a really good dinner and great service, so we definitely left happy!
I think the only thing that would make this 5 stars for me is if it was either in a more eclectic neighborhood or slightly more eclectic in decor. But I forgive them :)
This place is way overpriced for what they serve. I went there once with my boyfriend and neither of us truly enjoyed our meal. One would think a croque-monsieur is easy enough, right? Wrong... At least not that time I was in. It came out too salty and just isn't worth revisiting, I think.
Red velvet cake...'nuff said.
Actually, I like a lot of other things about this restaurant, too. I've had the french onion soup burger and the croque madame - both were very good and I would order either one again. The wait staff is so knowledgeable and professional, but they don't seem to take themselves too seriously and can make for a fun dining experience. The atmosphere is also very pleasant - I really like the privacy their booths seem to create.
The most important thing to remember when you visit Salut is to order the red velvet cake. Make sure you have a team to help with it or be prepared to take home leftovers - they are HUGE slices! Oh, and be sure to visit on a Monday when 10 wine options are offered at $10 a bottle. And don't forget to bring your Parasole Dining Club card to rack up some points!
It's funny, but all the people that have given bad reviews to Salut are really discounting it because Salut is in Edina and they just don't like Edina. In my opinion, they are not really being objective. If you haven't showered in four days and they look at you funny, it's not because it's an Edina restaurant, it's because you stink.
As a New Jersey resident who hopefully is more objective, I can say that Salut is fantastic. The prices are really quite reasonable; maybe not by Minnesota standards, but we feel like we are getting a deal when we come here.
We love the pommes frites, the kids meals and basically everything on the menu. The service is usually great. We tried sitting outdoors the last time we came and had a ball. We usually get the gang together and have table of 6-10, including kids. We prefer it for lunch.
This is a must for us on our trips to Minnesota.
How to say it best, Viva La France! Love this place.
First trip here was with a group for Sunday Brunch. Great menu, fantastic service and the caramel laced croissant was out of this world. This place has a very open, inviting atmosphere. Warm colors, comfortable seating. Enough said, on to the food!
Try the lobster Eggs Benedict, it's out of this world!! Rich creamy sauce with lots of fresh lobster. By far the best take on Eggs Benedict that I have ever had and I hate to admit I have had a lot of them over the years. We have been here for dinner and I must admit I don't remember what I had but I do remember I loved it every time.
Only negative I will say is that being in Edina on a Sunday you have to wait until after 12:00 to order a Bloodymary or Mimosa, snooty darn Edina people...don't you have something more important to worry about?
Anyways, go after 12:00 and enjoy the heck out of this place. By far the best restaurant in this area.
KT
salut is a quintessential edina crowd pleaser.....serving up french bistro fare, the place is in a great location on 50th and France, has an adorable interior and a lovely patio for summer and fall.
The hangar steak can't be beat - especially served up with those fabulous mashed potatoes...YUM.....the duck l'orange is a favorite of mine, as is the beet salad with goat cheese.
A must have after every meal - the four bite chocolate mousse....BLISSSS!
If you want to stay in the suburbs for a meal or even to hang at the bar, Salut is a great place to go as it gives that downtown feel with great food, good service and a lively atmosphere.
What would you get if Bennigan's changed from an Irish theme to French? Salut! You get the same cavernous dining space stuffed with booths (but red, instead of green), the same hokey, not-even-trying-to-be-authentic decor and that same comforted feeling of a slick corporate operation. It's like Disney's Epcot French experience rather than, you know, an actual French experience.
But I don't dine on the decor, I dine on the food and drink. Regarding the latter, Salut seems focused on their wine. I'm not qualified to judge the selection on the higher-end bottles; their by-the-glass selection seemed adequate but not very interesting (the "Bon" choice was La Vieille Ferme). So it was going to be a beer night. My choices? Summit EPA, Blue Moon, Stella Artois... Pretty uninspired. There's no excuse for having such a crappy beer selection in the Twin Cities, as blessed by good local options as we are. But there's nothing wrong with Summit (you just see it everywhere) so I went with the EPA.
For dinner, my companion and I both ordered burgers--I the Burger Bar Americain (with bleu cheese and sauce bordelaise) and she Le Cheeseburger Royale (bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes, onion). I ordered my burger rare and it came as ordered; the bun was well engineered to collect the burger's juices and the bordelaise was meaty and satisfying, although a little crowded out in some bites by the pungent bleu cheese. Her burger was requested medium-rare and came out with not a spot of pink inside; obviously medium if not well-done. As a result the burger was pretty tasteless. But had it been properly cooked I am sure it would have been as meaty as mine was.
On the side of both burgers was a little cup of fries--sorry, frites. This was actually why we had decided on Salut in the first place; reports of the best fries in town. But on seeing these crumbled leavings I could tell that wasn't going to be the case. No fry in my cup was over an inch and a half. Those that weren't broken and mangled were overcooked. They have the characteristic tenderness of twice-fried fries but given the sorry shape they were in these fries were either over-blanched in the first place or we were getting the scrapings of the bottom of the fry bucket.
The highlight of our meal at Salut was just after our drinks arrived when a waiter brought a piece of baguette (in branded paper bag, of course) and butter whipped with kosher salt. The baguette was well made and the butter creamy and salty.
But it is not so hard to come by good bread in these cities, and the baguette hardly makes up for the sad drink selection, uneven burgers and sad fries. And if you're like me, it's pretty hard to get past the hokey faux-french veneer of the whole thing and enjoy your meal.
In town for work and really enjoyed my dinner the other night at Salut. Loved the atmosphere, had good service and the food was tasty. I ordered the rotisserie chicken and thought it was awesome! Tons of flavor and lots of food. I thought that the fries on the side were not that great.. My friend ordered their onion soup and I think it's a must have for me next time -- it looked fantastic!
There's a nice looking outdoor patio that was pretty crowded but had we gotten there a bit earlier, would have been a nice option.
Good for a weeknight meal. Love their vinagrette.
This was the reason I couldn't wait for the arrival on Grand Ave. I like the decor better here. I was satisfied with the delicious french onion soup, and salad for lunch, and of course the baguette. Always room for the mini mousse. I once had the cream cheese and lox omelette for brunch, and enjoyed that. As in all french restaurants coq au vin (chicken in wine) is way over priced. It's nice and bright in here and I like the long seat in front.
Review based on a late lunch Sunday. Sundays Salut has a pretty extensive brunch menu with several breakfast and lunch options. We each got the soup of the day. Have no idea the name, but it was chicken broth with veggies, macaroni noodles, with a swirl of fresh pesto. Delicious! BF and I split the huge steak sandwhich which was also tasty, if a little pricey at 15 bucks.
I'd go back for lunch/brunch, but probably not dinner since it takes too long to get dressed up for weekend nights in Edina.
We came in for dinner with a group. I didn't pay so I can't comment on price. The food, however, was fantastic. 2 of us split a crepe and a fish special. Both great and I normally wouldn't opt for some place that considered itself french food. They also had a nice orange sangria.
I popped into Salut for a beer before seeing a movie at the Edina Theater around the corner on a Saturday afternoon a couple weeks back just to check it out. I had heard good things about the one in St. Paul.
I was dressed pretty shabbily that day and hadn't bathed, shaved, or combed by hair since Friday morning. The place was empty and I sat at the bar and got a $6.00 Kronenburg on tap. I thought this was pretty high for a Saturday afternoon. At Mounds Park Lounge on the Eastside of St. Paul, one can enjoy a Kronenburg for a mere $2.50, at any time.
I sat at the bar and read a newspaper and enjoyed my beer for about 40 minutes, while I waited for my movie time. The entire time, I felt eyes on me and when I went the bathroom, I was followed by a waiter or something. I felt that due to my unkempt appearance, I was being watched. My recommendation, don't wear an old torn hoodie and tattered jean jacket in Edina. I generally try to stay away from that area, but the theater there has some of the best movies around.
I won't even consider popping in here for dinner. It's crazy Edina madness and I don't think the food is a) anything impressive or b) worth putting up with the crowds for. I hadn't been in some time (for said reasons), and when I did used to frequent Salut, it was for the Happy Hour, which, for it's location, is pretty good. Again, it can get packed, so it's best to arrive at the very beginning of HH to ensure a table/seat.
Today and friend and I met for lunch.
I had a cup of the French Onion Soup (pretty good) and the Greek Salad (decent). My tablemate had the chicken club. When it came out, the bread looked moldy!!! There were a few tiny circles of blue on the top. Ugh.
The server took it away and then brought it back with another top and said that the cook said it was blue cheese and avocado that was "sprinkled" on it. Needless to say she was given another bread top (but I don't know about bottom. It freaked me out. OUr server, who was friendly enough, was just so matter of fact about it. I wasn't sold on the blue cheese avocado explanation, and was a little surprised that my table mate was charged for it.
I'm sure this was a fluke, but it should have been handled better.
"Hi, is your restaurant family friendly? We have a two year old."
"Oh yes, It's VERY child friendly."
"OK, can we get a reservation for three at 6pm, please?"
We arrive at 6pm, child in tow. Table not ready. Asked to wait AT THE BAR with our kid. 15 minutes pass. Child growing cranky. Receiving annoyed looks from late30s-early40s botoxed, Restalyned Edina residents.
Table becomes available at 640pm. Server doesn't take our order for 20 minutes. Food arrives 40 minutes later.
How was the food? No idea. Didn't get to eat any. As anyone with a toddler knows, 90 minutes is your limit for time out in a restaurant before meltdown, and we DIDN'T EVEN GET OUR FOOD UNTIL THEN.
From what I could tell, it's a great place if you have had a boob job, are alcoholic, and single.
Take your kids here at your own risk.
Salut is good. Definitely not the best restaurant in the Twin Cities but it has a good atmosphere and decent food. I've been here a few times and I always enjoy my meal, but it's never amazing. For some reason I always have trouble picking something off the menu. I'm sure I will be back because my friends and family like this restaurant and hopefully I'll be more amazed next time!
If you're having a bad day go to Salut!
Soup of the Day
Le Cheeseburger Royal
Red Velvet Cake
Burger you say? Not just any burger...you gotta try it. You'll just get happy...
I had a burger which was okay. It was nothing to write home about. It was nice that they brought a large red velvet cupcake for my boyfriend's birthday. They even put in two sparklers for the occasion.
I thought it was really strange when the hostess seated us way in the back. The place wasn't packed and I didn't understand why we were shoved in a corner. Perhaps, my grubby attire had something to do with it. I just came from the studio and I was wearing a hoodie with paint over over it. We were moved to a better spot after we complained.
In the Parasole spectrum, Salut seems to be homely. Especially when you think about what they've shown they're capable of in Chino.
But the people of Edina need this in the same way that the people of Wayzata need Sunsets I think. Which is to define Salut as a place that I think I personally would appreciate more if I were to be from Edina and used it as a platform for taking stock of the community on some sort of regular basis.
The food isn't that impressive, the service won't knock you over. That isn't to say that it isn't a decent place to eat, its to say that it doesn't wow. Will probably go back at some point because the ambiance was kind of interesting, the prices weren't atrocious, and if you're not a big french food connoisseur (which personally I am not), then it can be an enjoyable dining experience.
Pretty cool place, food is good, ill go back again and recommend it to others. It feels more like an American restaurant than a French one, but no complaints.
A date night favorite. Love the sangria!
I met a girlfriend at Salut for lunch last week and was pleasantly surprised. They had a 3-course lunch menu for $9.95. We both ordered a salad, pasta with shrimp and tomatoes and a small dessert. The food was fantastic! The pasta was not overcooked and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. Some of the dinner options seem pricey, but I will definitely come back for lunch or one of their weeknight specials.
Pommes Frites. Seared Tuna Tartare. Cheese Fondue. Oh my.
As an avowed food snob from California, I will freely admit that I really did not expect a tiny suburb of Minneapolis like Edina to have a top notch restaurant worthy of my super-picky 5 star rating.
However, Sault is flat out amazing. Went with a group and shared a handful of apps. First off, the baguettes they bring your table are to die for. I ate a whole one myself...the bread was perfectly soft on the inside yet crispy on the out. Whipped light butter complimented it perfectly. I spotted them on the way to the bathroom laying out on a table and thought briefly about snagging one for a late nite snack later. Somehow I managed to abstain.
From the bread sampling, it only got better. Crunchy pommes frites with a bernaise dipping sauce. Pefectly done calamari. Spicy shrimp mozz flatbread pizza. Cheese fondue with a variety of dipping options. Maryland Blue Crab Cakes, light and flakey and filled with hot fragrant crab.
Those were just the starters. We weren't even hungry after devouring them, but somehow got seduced into trying a few more goodies before moving onto dessert. The one-side -eared tuna tartare was very tasty, with a wasabi and mayo dipping sauce. Beautiful presentation....fries were better though. My tablemates got french onion soup, salads, and one was talked into the pork chop which he pronounced fab.
But the crowning glory of Salut was the dessert. The massive 'share' sized Banana Split was a towering delight filled with chocolate cake, vanilla bean ice cream, imported chocolate fudge, caramel, whipped cream, fresh strawberries and sliced bananas and cruncy fresh shortbread cookies. They poured the fudge on the massive concoction at your table AND left the pitcher for licking. The four of us fell onto it, and 10 minutes later it was demolished YET there was still a good 1/3 of it left. Definitely an American sized portion.
The server was wonderful, friendly yet not intrusive, tolerant of our table's shenanigans and brought out everything in a timely fashion but not too crazily fast. Altogether, a wonderful experience.
Quite obviously I was sorely mistaken about the small burb of MN's food options...I am now wondering what other little food gems I need to seek out on a future trip.
first you have to deal with the fact that it's in the white mecca of 50th and france, then you have to deal deal with the accompanying sense of entitlement that seems to come with the address.
once you're over that, the food's consistently respectable, the wait staff do know their stuff and the drinks are typically strong.
that said, it seems to be on the downward trajectory from peak. when it's busy it's crowded and noisy, so don't expect to hold a conversation at dinner. the wait staff can be either excellent or snotty. in their defense, this is understandable given the nature of most of the clientele.
i confess i used to be a fan of the tongue in cheek marketing and held a high opinion of the food. the spare ribs were mouth watering and fell off the bone, the fries are consistently good and the salted butter has yet to be replicated any where else.
that said, the calamari is pretty consistently disgusting (hope springs eternal on that one) the salads are spotty, burgers are hit or miss and steaks invariably get overdone.
i surmise it's post-peak.
This hood is a cutie! Restaurant has a bustling atmosphere. Otherwise, tried to get an app at the bar while I waited, but they wouldn't transfer the bill, so ick. Then, I didn't really like the hostess - sort of rude when I reduced the number of people in my party - off the charts rude for MN. In contrast, the waitress was very nice. All the food was good, though slow in coming. Butter was salty, but purposely. Poached salmon was nice and tasty. Meatball soup was OK, so was caesar. All a bit overpriced.
Loved the chicken and dumplings, escargot, and steaks. The crowd on the weekend can get to be a bit much, but its a popular night spot so that is to be expected. Its also on the pricey side. Overall, a satisfying french-american restaurant.
I believe restaurants can either do breakfast well or lunch and dinner. Salut attempts both and succeeds at the later.
On my last visit I had the Spice Crusted Steak Salad, complete with cherry tomatoes and blue cheese. The light vinaigrette was a perfect compliment to the rich flavor of the steak. My friends were also very pleased with their selections of Roasted Chicken Japnaise and Pizza Espagnole.
This is a hot spot in the Edina area and draws large crowds most nights. Enjoy the shops at 50th and France or a drink at the bar while you await a table.
Not bad. Service was fantastic. I had the Halibut and it was great. Want to go back for the pork tenderloin. My wife's dish was just OK for her. My kids split a steak and it was very good and so were the fries. Creative drinks but they can be spendy.
Love the fondue for dessert.
Worlds biggest mirror!
My review is for lunch only- haven't been there for dinner.
50th and France really needed a restaurant like Salut. It is good food, friendly service, and reasonably priced.
My dining companion had french onion soup, which was pretty amazing. She knows her french onion soup, and loved it.
I had the salad trio. It was perfect for lunch. It was three portions (they were on the small side, don't expect lots of food) of different salads. Beet & chevre, greens with shrimp and citrus vinaigrette, and chicken salad. All were excellent. The beet and chevre salad was cubes of beet- I was expecting slices, but it was still delicious.
Beautiful dining area- very french in feel. My favorite part of the restaurant was the ladies room. What a beautiful color! And a nice contrast to the restaurant colors. I can't believe I just wrote about the bathroom.
Next time I'm going to try some of their oysters.
Cute menus. Le humor is appreciated.
The newest restaurant from Parasole holdings the folks behind figlios and buca di beppo....salute is an american take on french dining. Located near 50th and France the rodeo drive of minnesota the restaurant has a nice open floor plan... the bar is fun with tall stacks of simple labelled red and white wine, Two stuffed wild boars wearing scarfs flank the bar. The appetizers were excellent, Don't miss the double layered roman cracker style crust pizza.
Look to spend around 60-70 bucks for two...this is afterall Edina.
People watching is fun, the ambieance is casual, urban but slightly noisy. Its like figlios with out all the parking hassles
Give it a shot...its new...its fun...its Edina!
Its new-ish. The chefs are still figuring out the menu. First times a charm, second time is decent, third time is a mess.
The food on the menu is very inconsistent, not only in terms of offerings, but existing food is constantly being reworked. We absolutely loved the wings when we went the first time. Second time around, when I was craving them again, the chefs had changed the cut of the wing and the seasoning without changing the description. Blech.
My wife has ordered the skirt steak twice and both times it has come out severely undercooked. Cooking meat to temp is a basic skill that these chefs clearly lack and moreover the sous chef didn't catch.
The ambiance is loud but not bothersome. Make reservations on Opentable first if you can.
For now, this restaurant gets 3 stars based solely on the preparation of my steak. I ordered the special they were offering which was some sort of steak prepared in some sort of wine reduction sauce with lots of garlic on top. From my experiences with steaks in general, I should have kept it simple and just ordered a plain ol steak served with bernaise on the side. The meat was cooked properly, but the sauce lacked salt. It's funny that such a nice restaurant would send up something bland...especially one that is French.
Anyways, I will give this place another chance at some point because I liked the environment (better for groups than a date with attractive interior decor and big booths) and the pommes frites were superb. Maybe I'll try the fruit de mer or a plain ol steak next time and they may be able to achieve a 4th star in my book.
Oh yeah, I finished off dinner with a red velvet cake that was served with some amazing ice cream on the side from Sebastian Joe's.
I was actually pretty impressed with this place. They have a very broad selection of menu items which are sure to please the pickest of eaters (aka my grandma). Well done.
I had an autumn pasta which was excellent but sort of pricey. Our service was great and the French ambience is also a plus, but be aware that it is very loud in there during busy times... not the kind of place if your looking for an intimate dining experience.
I would definately go back, probably at a more off time than the busy dinner rush.
Although the specials sounded very interesting we opted for entrees off their menu. I had the Salmon omelette (with a creamy goat cheese) which was very good. My wife had the Angelique flatbread pizza which was very good to excellent. We had a foreign visitor with us who wanted to try Maccaroni & Cheese; surprisingly it was good.
The decor is very nice and does succeed in creating a French ambience. Our waiter, Jeremiah, was excellent.
My main criticism is that the dishes are a little heavy on cheese. Quelle surprise!
The cappuccino was very good to excellent.
I had a great afternoon at Salut! Met two girl friends for lunch, so not sure if it was the fun company, the bright atmosphere, the wonderful service, or the great menu, but I was loving Salut! We all had the double fish plate, which was SO GOOD...grilled salmon, seared tuna and a tasty little salad in the middle. I'd say it's a great place to catch up with friends or for a fun date, but not the best for kids. Give Salut a try!
Great place for food and a nice night out. We were alittle annoyed that we had to wait 15min. when we got there when we had made reservations and were on time, but the food made up for it. My husband and I had steak and prime rib and both were superb! (Get the french fries, they are known for them.) The service was outstanding! We both had the house red with dinner and were not disappointed. p.s. try their choclate cake!
Had a very nice and satisfying meal here. We had an early reservation (5:30) on a Saturday night - my parents were visiting, and they like to eat early. They shared a prime rib that was delicious and I had the Steak Au Poivre. Of course, only get this if you like a lot of crushed pepper on your steak. The steak itself was perfect. The restaurant is expensive if you order the high-end cuts of steak, or the fresh fish; but I did see a variety of less expensive items on the menu as well. It was quiet when we arrived, but was getting very busy as we were leaving around 6:45pm. The service was also very good and friendly. I will return.
I had the gaspacho and was sadley disipointed.
