This place is overpriced for the food and ambiance...Service was great, with 3-4 different people who stopped by to ask how things were...However, the personal sangria pitcher for $11 was small and had little alcohol....My fajitas for around $14-15 were totally disappointing, as the small steak(4" long) was barely cut, and had to be pulled apart to put into the tortilla...very few veggies come with the fajitas dish...only about 1/2 a green pepper, which when sauteed was pathetic...a few strands...enough to fill 2 of the 4 tortillas with meat AND peppers....other two I stuffed with some remaining meat and the rice and beans pilaf-a-la-uncle-bens wild rice....my boyfriend got the chicken enchiladas, which were served more NYC fusion style with the mole sauce and cheese arranged in an artistic manner...I was expecting the traditional style with the cheddar oozing all over the top and rice/beans/salsa, etc on the side, as I've had for years when living in the Southwest....Oh, and the decor is odd....one whole wall is plastered with cheap stick-on rose bouquets that look like they came out of some dollar store...the place just looks cheaply decorated...come on now, let's keep it simple and elegant with Mexican flare rather than have it look like it tried and missed the mark on some low design budget...All in all, this place is way too expensive for what it is...entrees are mostly 12-20, but feel like they should be all 8-12.
I won't eat here again...For all I'm concerned, if I want something similar to Mexican, say Cuban, I'll go to the cheaper and muchhhhh more highly rated Cafe Habana in Nolita.
Worst mex ever. Doesn't deserve a place on 7th ave at all. Go next door to champignon. Dont waste your money on brunch here!!
Ordered huevos rancheros and got sunny side up eggs with some nasty rice and beans brown guac. Told the owner/ waiter to take that back and my gf wont eat this. Check came charging us for what we didn't eat; ask the guy why and he said he could make it better. Finally it was agreed to pay just for the one meal and he said not come ever again??!!!!! Who the f$$$ is that guy!!! This place wont survive; i hope it doesn't.
Horrible. My boyfriend, his seven year old daughter, and I ate there tonight for the first time. The place looks festive and cheerful. But don't let that fool you. Service was horrible at best. Food was dreadful. Margarita was abnoxiosly sweet. All three of us feel sick, and I wouldn't doubt if the seven year old pukes before the night is done. She was crying about her tummy hurting. Yeah, I do not recommend it. Sorry to be such a downer, but YUCK!
Umm...I'm totally calling this place out for skimping on the meat! A $12 "chipotle pork" burrito should not be stuffed to the gills with rice and potatoes.
Seriously, I counted like 3 pieces of pig.
The margaritas were yummy and strong, though. Gotta give credit where it's due.
Not the best place but then again not the worst. I didn't mind eating there.... But I'm not in a rush to go back.
The food is pretty good, and so are the drinks. Both are inexpensive. The service is pretty poor, which really hurts this place. The only reason I come here is probably the proximity to my apartment.
The wait is longer in the summer than in the winter, because there is outdoor seating. If the wait is longer than 20 minutes or so, you should just go somewhere else - there are other restaurants nearby.
Might have given it two stars, but they have El Yucateco hot sauce (green and red) on every table. Tough to find that stuff out here.
It should be 2.5 stars. I had dinner here last night. The food is quite expensive and not that good. The stuffed chillies had too much cheese in them and I usually do not say that as I love melted cheese. The enchiladas were ok but nothing spectacular. It comes with green rice and that just looks very unappealing as well. I was in the neighborhood so we had decided to have dinner here, but that is not something I would do again.
Pros:
Friendly service
Cheap food
Outdoor dining
Cons:
Not authentic
Sangria was too expensive and had barely any alcohol
Very small lunch portion that doesn't include any sides
Mehhhhhh
This place sort of sucks you in in the spring and summer because of the outdoor dining, which is great. But other than that, it's average mexican. In fact, it's sort of weird because of the strange marinade they use that almost makes you think the meat is spoiled.
I've had fajitas there twice. The service is so-so, the wait to get in is unorganized, and the price for the amount of meat you get is poor. I had the duck appetizer and it was mostly fried tortillas served in a pilsner glass with sour cream and salsa and guacamole in the bottom. Where's the duck?
Add it all up and I'll pass on going back a third time.
This place was the nastiest experience I've had with Mexican food. Extremely overpriced, bad service, and the food was just unacceptable. Come on! a burrito $12 that was stuffed with rice and canned black beans and a some herbs with their stems, oh! and meat, i was lucky to find 4 small pieces of meat. Never again going to this place, waste of time and money, that got me sick minutes after leaving this place. yuk!
First of all, our waiter was the biggest bitch I have ever encountered. Second of all, they need to get higher chairs or something.... I felt like I was a fucking midget. No joke.
The sangria was not nearly strong enough, and the pear cactus mojitos were basically glowing they were such a bright shade of purple swamp water (for some inexplicable reason).
I don't know. Maybe not terrible. But not something I'd care to return for.
Some of the worst food I've ever eaten in my life. I'd give it minus five stars if I could. Avoid, the food made me feel sick. The service was OK.
Tried to escape the cold last night at this south-of-the-border wanna-be restaurant. Not impressed with the service. I was ordering, and when I realized that flautas are fried--I said to the waiter--"Wait, nevermind. I don't want something that is fried." I ordered something else, and when it came . . . it was fried. It was a salad that came in a fried shell. (Weird, gross.) And the dressing was straight-up mayonnaise. (Lots of it.) I couldn't eat it.
Also, it was way too hot in here. After we stripped down to our t-shirts, we still had to request that they turn the heat down.
I hate this place.
The only dish I've ever gotten here is the Chile Releno and it's really, really good. They use good poblano peppers (don't laugh, I've been served Relenos made of shitty green peppers more than once) and the cheese resembles chihuahua (my favorite mexican queso) though I'm not sure it actually is. It's not the cheapest and the service can be apathetic but the Chile Releno is worth it.
The Guac is very good - good chips. I had the mole/verde chicken enchiladas. It was okay for East Coast Mexican food - but I probably wouldn't order it again. The location is great. Its a nice place to people watch. Anywhere with outdoor seating gets a thumbs up from me.
Awesome guac and terrific spicy salsa. Not sure if I would have expected a full night of Madonna dance remixes, but what hey, it's Chelsea. Not crazy about the sticky plastic table clothes and menus, but the margaritas knocked us on our asses. I'll be back.
Below average Mexican food, crappy service, and too many flowers on the wall. I probably won't go back. I ordered a chicken with rice dish, which was overly sauced and tooooooooo salty. The guac with chips had too much salt on them and can I get some service here! The place should be renamed, "Sal Y Sal".
I went to Salsa y Salsa on Friday night with some friends and the food was delicious. I had the chicken soft tacos which comes with green rice and beans and poblano cheese. It was sooooo good! The pomegranate margarita was nice and strong(just how I like it) and left me tipsy after just one drink! The service(or lack thereof) left a bit to be desired, but overall it was a good experience and I will definitely be going back.
If you like mohitos this is the place to go- they make them with pomme-granite juice which at first I thought they had brought me the wrong drink but instead was pleasantly surprised. Food is good- standard mexican and very affordable. Sat outside on a very nice evening...great Chelsea people watching.
Interesting Mexican and Great Food. Small place with excellent food. I love the Herradura Margarita...then there is this chicken dish with rice, mushrooms and the chicken is stuffed with cheese..so good.
I get chicken burritos delivered from this place once a month. Consistently great. Looks a little cramped when I walk by, but could be good.
The sign outside read "Fabulous Lunch" for $8.50, it should have read "Fabulous lunch, NOT!". A co-worker and I were walking pass this place the other day and decided to try it, based on the fact it is close to our office and it was "Fabulous" for $8.50. First off, I didn't really like the lunch menu. Not a big selection, that you expect from Mexican. I went with the chicken tacos and had asked the server if they were served with rice and beans, she replied yes. When my food arrived, two tiny soft tacos with hardly any chicken were served on one large plate (felt like I was in the meat packing district) and rice and beans on another. Still hungry, after we finished, we asked for the check. There was a $3.25 charge for my rice and beans. Of course, I called the server over and questioned her. She said it was her mistake that they do charge extra, but in this case she would remove the charge from my check. All I said to her, was, "are you telling me that my fabulous lunch for $8.50 was really those two tiny meatless tacos?". Her answer, "YES"!!! That was enough! No more questions your honor, the defense rest..... Don't do it!!!!!!
Ordered delivery from here today. We got three lunches and spent $45, way overpriced. And the menu had all the old prices scratched out with new higher prices. The food was so horrible no one could eat their meal. we ended up throwing it away and getting taco bell. It's pretty bad when a place is so bad that you look forward to taco bell as a reprieve from the horrible aftertaste left in your mouth. The Guacamole was watery and tasted like it came from a can or supermarket that was clearing out their spoiled goods. I ordered the huevos rancheros and took one bite- couldn't go any further. All I tasted was salt and a very bad flavor which I can't describe. All I know is that I don't get an aftertaste that bad from my own bile and vomit. My co workers got the Chicken Enchiladas and the Huevos Chorqueso and had similar complaints about the taste. Honestly, I couldn't even give this food away because I wouldn't dare feed it to my dog. Sadly, I am finding there is no good mexican food in new york. Even Taco Bandito is better than this sorry crap. Save your money ( and it's a lot of money) and go to taco bell or skip mexican all-together. I've never been more serious in my life.
our group of six came here for lunch a few months ago. they advertise a $6.95 "fabulous lunch special." it's a decent value --- you get your choice from a list of about seven items (tacos, enchiladas, as well as other dishes i can't pronounce), and for an extra $3, you can add an appetizer as well. the place was very empty since it was relatively late (2pm) and there was only 1 waitress and 1 busboy, which should've been plenty considering how few people there were. however, we had a hard time flagging the busboy down to refill our water glasses, and we had to explicitly tell him which people needed water --- he neglected to refill 3 empty glasses at the table since only 1 person had asked for a refill. we started with "mama's nachos" (~$7), which was a plate of crispy-ish multi-coloured corn chips layered with cheese & salsa, sprinkled with beef, and topped off by a dollop of guacamole & sour cream. they were ok, but i thought that the serving was a bit on the small side, and was also slightly disgusted by the pool of oil that formed at the bottom of the plate. for my entre, i chose the chicken tacos. the two soft corn tortillas came stuffed with chicken & lettuce, and topped with a smattering of cheese and tomatoes. they were decently marinated, and the all white breast meat tasted healthy. two of my friends got the chorizo fajitas, which they said was good. it was more generously-sized than my two small tacos and came with a side of rice. i forgot the name of one notable dish --- but it consisted of a pile of cooked seasoned tortilla chips with sliced chorizo & topped with a fried egg. the concept was pretty interesting, and it tasted decent, but also oddly a lot like the noodle dishes that you can get at asian restaurants (maybe it was the spices that they used). overall, good value for the money. service could be improved, but it wasn't terrible.
