Rockville, MD
Happened upon Sal's when Lombard's was packed and our Lombardi backup was closed for renovation. This was five years ago and now we go straight to Sal's. Two of us share a large pie -- thin, crispy, perfect NY-style pizza -- and a carafe of wine that is cold, red and probably very cheap. But really, cannot go wrong.
There's no ambiance to speak of and the staff won't offer suggestions, but that's not what we're after. We're after pizza and it is top notch.
Note Sal's is moving in two months, per Sal's son. Just down the road, to a place with a brick oven... -

Never have I received such poor service at any restaurant I've been to in the city. My boyfriend and I were seated at a tiny table right next to the pizza serving trays and dishes. The table was definitely put there as an afterthought but we really didn't care because we were hungry.
We ordered a margherita pizza and waited for what felt like forever. When the food finally came, the waiter laid down a regular plain cheese pizza and we were like, WTF? This isn't what we ordered. The waiter looked puzzled and adamantly told us that that was a margherita pizza. I then told him, well where's the basil leaves and mozarella and everything else that makes up a margherita pizza. He still gave me a puzzled look and said, "Oh we forgot the basil leaves" and proceeded to give us a plate of FRESH basil leaves with the stems and everything to eat with the plain cheese pizza. It was ridiculous!
I'm not mad that they got our order wrong but to lie and tell us that a plain cheese pizza is the same thing as a margherita pizza is ludicrous. I would've refused to eat the damn thing and have them make me a new pizza but my boyfriend was starving at this point and he gave in.
Making a mistake with the order is one thing but not admitting your mistake shows how rotten the service is at this place. The cheese pizza ended up being unremarkable. Never again. -

Ran in here for a quick sandwich. I was fine sitting at the counter they have to eat real fast, but the guy working insisted I take a seat at a table they had available in the back. They still gave me my food quickly. I got a very large Chicken Parm sandwich which was pretty good. Definitely a nice place to stumble into for a bite to eat!

Pretty average. I was pretty jacked after a couple neighborhood guys refered to it as a gem in LIttle Italy but it in the end it seemed pretty run of the mill. Owner is sort of "too cool for school" and when I ordered pepperoini on my cheese slice, they simply placed pepperoni's on top of the already made cheese pizza. I don't know if this is a common NYC move, but I wasn't crazy about it. The best way to sum up Sal's is that I came away with the same feeling you do after rubbing one out.....it gets the job done, but your not doing back flips over the experience and can't wait to get the real thing.

we were in search of a pizza place that sold single slices after drinking. luckily they were still open and we got there just in time. they dont have a huge selection in terms of diff kinds. its either mushrooms, sausage, or pepperoni. i got the pepperoni. It was pretty greasy but the crust was crunchy. it was a great combo after a couple drinks. the owner was freakin fantastic, and really hilarious too! def want to come back for the full dinner sometime soon!

I would definitely avoid this place. Hit or miss. Got a decent chicken parm sandwich but went back a second time and the pizza was REALLY greasy and the tomato sauce on the gnocchi was watery.
And for $12 a person......not worth it whatsoever.
I'd rather order dominoes.
Go somewhere else in little italy and take advantage of one of the $10 pasta specials - very good -

I almost hate to give away such a gem and personal favorite. You'll find me here at least once a week, chowing down any number of yummy menu items, enjoying the view.
Sal's was entirely an accidental discovery - but what a fantastic find. Its prices are amazing for the value, and the food is fantastic old-world American-Italian. Pasta with calamari is served with either white or red sauce, and you get a ton of the tasty little critters -none of which are a bit rubbery or overcooked. Sandwiches are HUGE, and all in the $6-8 range. A favorite is the prosciutto, served in a fresh crusty hero with a heap of lovely fresh salad and meat. The parmigiana (chicken or veal) is equally good - abundant, and served with a super-tasty homemade tomato sauce.
Their patio isn't exactly posh, but it does offer a great view of a busy (but not overwhelmingly bustling) Soho street just on the edge of Chinatown. Perfect for people-watching, tho one wishes the radio speakers were turned down a notch -I find the noise a tiny bit intrusive, but, again, that's a personal preference as it was at La Flaca.
Coffee -cappuccino, latte, etc - is really, really good, and service is prompt. Don't be put off by the initial abruptness - it melts the minute you smile. Go to Sal's -seriously, you'll want to smile when you see the bill, and walk off into Soho with a full happy belly! -

Pizza is like Sex.
When it's good, it's really good.
When it's bad, it's still pretty good.
Sal's is like a decent missionary position. When you're feeling slightly less creative and a little bit lazy- you can rely on it deliver the goods. It rarely surprises you, a stalwart selection that will stand the test of time.
I wish they would stop harping on about BUSH though. I mean it is only to some people's partiality...
(If you're feeling a little dirtier get the fried calzone) -

Anytime I am in SoHo this is the place for me! Yummy, yummy, yummy!
I found Sal's when I invited a friend to come home with me for a few days. After a day of shopping and walking around the slushy NY streets, I looked up and there was Sal's. We were starving and who can say no to Italian food? We proceeded to eat there 3 more times during our trip.
The service was excellent! The place was cozy. The food was so, so good! The times I have gone I ordered minestrone soup, fried calamari, lasagna, and Margherita pizza - all delicious!
If you're in SoHo and want Italian? Sal's is the place for you! -

While walking by, you may think that because it's around Little Italy, that the pizza may be above average here. Let's just say, this isn't the pizza New Yorkers brag about when refusing to eat pizza and town X.
Negative points for lack of spices and readily available napkins. -

Oh man, I am all about this place. The minute we got into NYC, all I wanted was a slice of pizza in the worst way. We got finished with our Accomplice: New York tour around 9pm and wandered around Little Italy for a while looking for a place to eat. First we stopped at a place that promised a slice of pizza and beer but failed to deliver (I was sorely disappointed). Soon after, however, we decided to double back and come to Sal's. Out of our three days in NYC, that slice of Sal's pizza was definitely my favorite meal.
The place is cozy and has a family atmosphere. When we sat down at the table and I started looking at the photos of the Italian Hollywood royalty who had eaten there, I realized that the guy standing in most of the pictures must be the owner, and I was delighted to realize that this was also the guy who greeted us at the door with a friendly smile.
The waitress was sweet and didn't bat an eye when all of us ordered water (usually this is enough to make a restaurant proprietor's skin crawl) and our pizza came out fast and hot. And it was freaking delicious. I promised myself some top-notch pizza in Little Italy and I definitely got it here. -

My dad works nearby and he scouted out Sal's as a casual family dinner spot years ago. They have a full classic Italian menu, but they're only outfitted like your average old-school pizzeria, read: no frills whatsoever. Their veal marsala is fab. Ditto for the chicken sorrentino (mm prosciutto, mm eggplant, mm mozzerella).
I can't speak for the pizza out of personal experience, though I directed a friend to pick up a slice and he was mightily impressed.
p.s. I don't think some of the other reviews here are for the same Sal's--I think they were referring to Sal's on Ave A.Listed in: Sentimental Favorites

I don't care what people say but I love this place. I'm from Chicago and everytime my boyfriend and I visit NYC this the one place we look forward to. Though it's a really small restaurant it's cozy and the staff here are really nice. A couple of summers ago my friends and I spent nearly three hours talking, eating and drinking wine and not once did we feel rushed. It's also fun to look at the walls and read and see all the famous people that visited the restaurant.
As for the food...it's as good as it can get. Their pizza's pretty good but I have to say that my favorite meal is their lasagna. It's simple but it's true authentic italian.
So if you're in the SoHo neighborhood and you are looking for a quick bite with delicious food at the right price....then this is the place for you.Listed in: Best out of State Restaurants

My goal when I go to New York is to consume as much cheese as I can, thus forcing myself on cheese-cation upon my return to Boston. And Sal's helped. I, in a remarkably unladylike fashion, scarfed my $6 calzone on the bus home as one final ode to cheese before the fast.
I could have used some sauce to wash down my cheese with, but perhaps it would have just diverted my attention away from the task at hand. Cheese gorge.
To that end, I would happily return for an encore. -

I grew up going to Sal's calzones. I can recall numerous trips into the city or passing through the city (after visiting relatives in Queens, LI, or Brooklyn) and stopping by Sal's on the way home for a take out order. My family in PA and on the west coast all call in orders of 12 calzones to go and take them home to freeze.
Of course there is nothing more decadent than a fried calzone oozing with cheese but you can't beat that flavor. The dough is so fresh and crispy and it has the perfect amount of melted mozzarella just salted enough and sweet ricotta cheese. -

Our family went here the last night we stayed in Soho after passing it by as a tiny corner "Dive" several times over the past few days.
Had already tried Lombardi's the 1st night which was MUCH larger and I feel overly hyped. Always a crowd outside Lombardi's for a pie I found to be dry and lacking in cheese ( I was not impressed).
Sal's not only had a great family atmosphere, but perfect NY style pizza with delicious, fresh ingredients and savory crust. My son had the meatball sub- fantastic! Only 5 tables inside, but we only waited 10 min on a Saturday night.
Excellent, warm and friendly service; Unlike the impersonal robot waiter we had at Lombardi's.
Take a chance on Sal's it's awesome! -

New York, NY
Regular pizza, none of that brick oven stuff. Unfortunately, the pizza is greasy, light on the cheese, and the crust is dry and over-floured.
Sal's claim to fame is that G.W. Bush ate here after sept 11, to promote the regrowth of downtown businesses. He's got the article on the wall and everything, you can't miss it. If I could subtract half a star for that I would.
Do yourself a favor and grab a bahn mi next door at Bahn Mi So 1 instead. -

Pizza is still two dollars a slice? Where am I? The year 2000?
The only pizza place for miles around. The pizza is subtle; and yeah they're still milking that Bush ate here BS.
Do tourists still respond to 9/11 with money? Puke. -

Great pasta, moderate prices. Get the alfredo & the fresh bread! It's like crack.

There isn't pizza like this anywhere on the west coast. Perfectly cheesy, with enough grease to make it good, not gross. Flavors on the basil and tomato were perfect.
I grabbed a slice to go, and headed down Mulberry to check out a few other things. A couple of restaurant owners who were trying to bring people into their restaurants were mad that I didn't bring them a slice. -

Not a big fan of pizza but this pizza was pretty good... Lazy day in NYC so friend and I walked over from her apartment, grabbed a slice of cheese pizza, head back to her place and devoured it. Next time I'll order with toppings...

If you were in Little Italy last Sunday, you were lucky to be there at the time of the Italian Festival. It was super sunny, super hot, and super crowded. Desperate to find a place to sit down after walking all day, my friends and I entered Sal's Pizzeria.
The service is quick, friendly, and what made it heaven was that it had fans to vent away the outside heat and humidity and it was pleasantly shaded inside and dim with a tv screen showing Juventis soccer.
I had a deep fried Calzone for $7.99 that was very good. Given the crowd and hot weather, I felt lucky to find this place. There was a nice relaxed atmosphere inside and we were all tired and needed a rest. This was the perfect place for that.
Glad I found Sal's. -
Review from Alison C.
Sal's is a traditional pizzeria offering everything from Italian subs and pizza to complete pasta entrees. I highly recommend the food, but urge you to avoid delivery.
My colleagues and I put together a lunch order for about 6 of us, and it took over two hours for the meal to be transferred the 5-10 blocks from the restaurant to our office. Despite several phone calls and reassurances that the food was on its way, we thought that we would be waiting until dinner at that point.
Once the food arrived, the pizza and subs were delicious. Even the cheese-less pizza with fresh vegetables and crisp crust was enough to placate my bitter resentment at having to wait so long to be fed. (Be warned- I do not like things getting in between food and me!) The turkey, tomato, and provolone sub was extremely fresh and placed in a doughy hero roll.
I plan to try Sal's again, though I might just pick-up my order next time... -

Sal's gets four stars for its slices but two stars for its sit-down food which gives an average of three.
Stick with the $2.50 slices and you won't be disappointed. -

Please don't tell anyone about the broccoli rape white pizza at Sal's or the seafood salad or the carafes of wine or the prices because then everyone would want to go to Sal's. This is one of those "finds" that you don't tell your friends about so they won't be there when YOU want to go.
Why am I writing then; can't help myself. any time I'm in the "hood this is where I go. I wonder if they have other things on the menu 'cause this is all I ever get. Great Pizza!!! -

Located at a popular Corner near Little Italy, this place offers great Italian food. Small and crowded, but the pizza was great. The restaurants has articles and awards hung all around the walls. Photographs with George Bush eating here all around the place!

Syosset, NY
Very disappointed with the service. They may have decent pizza but if you are counting on them to deliver by a certain time then forget it. They fail horribly. I put in a large order for a party two days prior. Confirmed the time of delivery several times and they showed up over 30 minutes late and only with part of the order. I had 80 hungry kids waiting and crying.
Its ok if you want to go in and pick up a slice but if your ordering (especially for a party) I would seriously go somewhere else.
Oh their response " we are not machines". Well, I would also say that a business promised they should deliver. Otherwise, unacceptable. -

Sal's and the Italian Food Center pretty much was my diet for about 3 years while I lived in the area. No frills, above average NYC pizza without any hype. Delicious.

Walked in and grabbed slices to go. 5 Bucks for two cheese slices, they didn't seem to have much variety. But the slices were hot, tasty, and had a great crust. Pretty solid Pizza in a city that takes this kinda thing pretty seriously. I would come back.

We'd been wandering around China Town and Little Italy for an afternoon and just happened into Sal's Pizzeria for a quick snack. The pizza was fantastic! We split a 9" cheese pizza ($6) and had absolutely no regrets - it was a good deal for the delicious pizza. However, we also ordered two Cokes for a caffeine fix, and we were disappointed to learn the cans of Coke that were slammed down on the table were $2.50 each. Yikes!
The owner was friendly and attentive, though, and we really enjoyed the experience. -
Review from Franny A.
The two pizza men statues guard the entrance to this old school nabe fave. Fried calzones are tdf and taste like zeppole with cheese. The fried dough makes it sweet and tastes oh so good with cheese. A very decent slice with a slight char rounds out the flavor mix. Do not miss the fried calzone! I could not vouch for any other food as the fried calzone is kinda what they are famous for.

woo hoo, I'm so excited about having an awesome pizzeria right next to my apartment, that was the only thing missing in my neighborhood in SF. To be honest, I've only tried the cheese pizza so far, but it was delectable. The staff is really friendly and you can either take out or eat in. In fact, it's more of an Italian restaurant, with full Italian menu than a take out pizza joint. I'm sure I will be a regular here as I've been here for a week and had the pizza twice already!

My friend and I went here late one night when we were visiting NY. We had heard good reviews from our native NY friends and decided to check it out. I got the Rigatone Alla Sal's and she got some pizza, which was GIGANTIC. The staff, especially our waitress, were super friendly. The food was mediocre. I could tell it was the kind of place where the staff know the names of the regulars. With all the fantastic restaurants in NY, I probably wouldn't come back here because it wasn't so memorable...

I've been going to this place for over 10 years, I love it. Go, even if just for a plain slice. It's GREAT pizza.
