Sal's has decent Mexican food. The chips and salsa are always good. I like the chili verde here.

On the downside, a Mexican Restraunt that doesn't have Carne Asada for tacos and burritos is just not right.

Sal's is one of a few local places in Madera to grab Mexican food.  We come here every year on 9/1 after the opener.

As for being authentic....well they have a few authentic dishes.  I don't consider tacos and burritos authentic.  When you talk about caldos, menudo, albondigas, etc. then you're getting closer to the real deal.

I always look for the authentic dishes cause they tend to be more classic tasting depending on the region they are from.

The place is decorated simply and not too overbearing.  They have a decent selection of beers and cocktails.  However....service and consistency is hit or miss.  When they're on....they're on, but if they're off...you'll know right away!  Unfortunately there aren't too many places open late so you are limited.

Sal's offers a cocido (beef soup) at other places it's also known as caldo de res.  I ordered that as I wanted something hot but not too heavy.  My friends ordered the usual Americanized dishes (enchiladas, tacos, etc.).  The soup came in a huge bowl so that got me excited thinking that they were gonna offer me a large bowl full of beef with all the special veggies.

Once they set the bowl down my excitement went away as I stared into a bowl of mostly soup with about four tiny pieces of beef, a portion of corn cob, zucchini, cabbage, carrots and potato.  It was disappointing to not get the usual portions of beef shanks or yucca as this dish is usually known for.

I'll more than likely still come back every year on 9/1 but I hope they get their game on more consistently.

Went to dinner in Madera simply because it was midway between Atwater and Fresno (we were meeting some friends from Fresno)

-Good selection of girly frozen margarita flavors :p
-Free chips & salsa w/ refills
-Attentive wait staff - always refilling water and checking on us
-Food was decent, but I was not blown away.
-Highly doubt I will ever be back in Madera :p

I work in Madera and eat out for lunch 2-3 times a week.  I have a hard time ever choosing anything other than Sal's.  There are other places in Madera for lunch, but it's hard to get better than Sal's.  It is busy at lunch, so come early or come late but 12:15-12:30 you could have a wait.  There are many good things on the menu, but I love Sal's Fancy burrito, especially the chile verde.  If you haven't tried it, you are missing out.

Service is good.  It clean.  Not much in the way of ambience or anything, but it's comfortable.

I love Sal's! Best salsa ever!!

Its pretty much a MUST when I am in Madera to eat at Sal's. They are super fast and their food is very consistent. I always get a build-your-own burrito and my boyfriend always gets the Sal's Fancy Chili Con Carne burrito. I've never tasted his, but judging by how quickly he eats it, it must be delicious. The service is always friendly and in my opinion, prices are very good. Portions are also huge.

Madera has very few good restaurants, its a town filled with fast food joints and so-so diners. Sal's is a diamond in the rough. And as long as I have to make the drive down here to visit my boyfriend, I will continue to come back!

I have yet to be disappointed with Sal's in Madera !! The chili verde is very tasty and a family favorite is Sal's Fancy Burrito with the chili verde with melted cheese topped over a super size chili verde burrito. Sal's has the absolute best chili and we almost never leave without taking a pint home to snack with the zesty corn chips from Sal's. I have tried the Menudo several times and it has great color and fantastic taste. The full order is humongous so, you better bring your appetite or settle for the half order which is plenty for most. My wife and daughter also love the carne asada taco's with cabbage which is always a winner for our family. There are several other great items on the menu that I highly recommend Sal's.

Had lunch there today.  The chips were stale.  Salsa too hot!  Service was good.  I would eat there again only because not many choices in Madera.

Ok, so I have a lot of love for this place since I was born and raised in Madera.  The food is consistently good, but I have noticed a slight downward trend over the past couple years.  Having lived in the northeast for a while, I appreciate their food.  The rice and salsa are both excellent.  I'm sure there are other options in the valley but this is a standby for me and my family.

Good food, large portions & good value. Had enchiladas suizas. Food seems fresh and food has a homemade quality.  This is located in the strip mall.  One con is that they charged for the grilled jalapeños as a side. I found the place through Google maps doing a search for 'tacos.'

Great food and service! The staff is fast and friendly! The salsa is the best! I have traveled a lot and tried Mexican food restaurants all over and this is one of the best! I am big on service as I am in the hospitality industry and Sal's is top notch!

Yep, it's some good eats. There are not many in Madera and anybody who has been through this town knows this! I have ordered here for some parties and they never get my large orders wrong, they haven't changed their prices much and I have been eating here for 13 years! I am in love with their salsa and chips. Yeah it can be greasy depending on what you order, but what the H man.. why would you go here if your on some health food trip or diet? Bobby Salazars in Fresno and this place have been in competition for years, but Bobby's has a fast food thing going on, where as Sal's has the table service thing. I hope that one day they will buy out the place to left  or right of them and expand as it is a small place. Right around the 1st of the month it gets busy as everybody gets their uh, "reload" on their cards and goes for a "nice fancy dinner" and it can get crowded. It can  also get pretty warm inside. But the food keeps bringing me back. Sal's mmmmmmm!
