I still don't remember why haven't Yelp'ed this iconic institution in the greater Syracuse/Central NY area. Of course it has been like 20-22 years since I was a student at Syracuse University.
I remember theses wings were HUGE, breaded and fried to a golden brown crispiness. And then you would dunk them in their house Blue Cheese or the legendary Sassy Sauce (honey mustard). And the large potato wedges also breaded and fried to perfection. Also dipped into the Sassy Sauce. Both the wings and wedges were also perfectly seasoned with a crisp coating. I could have sworn they fried it in LARD!!!!
We would order Sal's from our dorm and Sal's would deliver the food in pizza boxes and there were coupons for wings, pizza (don't remember that much), wedges, Sassy Sauce and blue cheese sauce, Pepsi, and some 12 oz. plastic cups with the saying "Stolen from Sal's." I still have that cup til this day.
I also remember a bunch of us a couple years after graduating, actually going back to Syracuse and visiting Sal's Birdland Restaurant on S. Salina St (the hood). WOW! Great food does come from holes in the wall and this was basically a shack in the middle of the hood. I mean it was the mean streets of Syracuse and a scary place for us suburban folk. Not to mention the creepy old lady with one or two decayed teeth taking our order. SHUDDER!!!
Sal's now sells the Sassy sauce and other stuff online as well as distributes the sauce to local grocery stores like Wegman's! And of course now the Wegman's are in the Washington, DC metro area, I can get Sal's Sassy Sauce (and Dinosaur BBQ sauce) here too!! WOOT WOOT!!!
I have been back to Syracuse and looks like Sal's has somewhat sold their business to the University cause they sell the wings on campus (I don't think it's the same or will ever be as good as the original). :( That's sad.
I mean my stomach is growling and my mouth is watering as I type up this very belated review of one of the best food experience in my entire life. I will never forget get Sal's Birdland or their fantastic food and some of my friend's yelling out, "DUDE! Let's order SAL'S!!!!!" -

Wow, I guess they are still around huh?
I lived in Syracuse from 91 to 95, their
potato wedges, wings and sassy sauce
were addicting. Before I graduated,
SU's dining hall (Goldstein?) added
Sal's Birdland counter. Not sure if it's still there.
If I ever make it back to Syracuse, I'd love
to eat their wings again. -

Twenty years later and I still compare every wing to Sal's. These are by far the best wings I have ever had in my entire life!!!!!
The crispy breading dipped in Sassy Sauce then their homemade Blue Cheese Sauce! The potato wedges dipped in the cheesy goodness! The flat Pepsi delivered in the cardboard container!
My mouth is watering just remembering.
About ten years ago my wife and I went back and it was just as good as i remembered. But they don't deliver anymore. Those poor kids don't know what their missing.
I've ordered the batter mix and Sassy sauce and made them at home. It was close but without the wedges it was only half of the experience.
Ahh nostalgia!!! -

Very unique and delicious wings. Call in your order ahead of time and be sure to get the Sassy Sauce. It is incredible.
The only problem here is the price, while not crippling, you can get wings for cheaper down the street at Sabatino's. -

I was told to stop here by my dad who ate here all the time when he was a grad student at cuse during the 80s. I was surprised it was still there, but from what I understand it hasn't changed that much. I got the half-bird with beans and potato wedges. It's a lot of food and I loved the slice of white bread under the chicken. The chicken the the crispiest I have had in a long time. I was a little disappointed with the fries, but overall the chicken and beans made up for it. The sassy sauce was tangy and awesome...almost like a spicy honey mustard...I wish I could get a continuous supply sent to the west coast. Hopefully people don't turn this place down by its outside appearance...it may look a little run down, but the food is one of a kind.
