This review may wander a bit, but bear with me!
I have always been really fussy about getting a good haircut; for example, when I was living in the Napa Valley I would still drive down to my hair stylist in Orange County. I once tried a local friend of a friend in Napa and halfway through the cut she said :"Huh!" During my cut. Alarm bells going off in my head. I said:"What's up?". "Gee, your old stylist cut your hair at all these different lengths." Oh, crap. baseball cap for 3 weeks.
At one point I did venture out to another stylist that a friend LOVED (and she was really touchy about her hair, I should add...) and so I tried him. Two words: Coke Head. So much so, you could actually see the coke hole coming as he cut your hair! NEXT!!!
I give you background because I was ready to start commuting from Scottsdale to Orange County because I just couldn't find anyone here. I tried some recommendations from Yelp (thanks everybody!) and just was not happy with what I got; a few good cuts but loads of weirdness or cluelessness. My fave was the stylist from Toni and Guy who sat down as we were best buddies and proceeded to show me 34 camera phone pics of his home remodel halfway through our time together. I kid you not.
Despair....
I then went here to Salon Tru without an appointment, completely out of the blue. A 10 minute wait and then... Maren McKenna!
I was cautious at first, expecting some lunatic-kokopelli-wearing-gen Y-bimbo, but guess what? Beyond competent, talented and a genuinely nice person! I had a great haircut and it got the acid test when my partner saw it and was happy that the baseball cap could be retired!! He went next and was also happy with his cut. We have been seeing Maren exclusively for about 6 months now and have yet to be disappointed.
I should add that the staff are really great, I get professional-grade reminders for haircut appointments and am always greeted with a smile and a great vibe. Thanks Maren, for having an empty appointment that day!
I just got a tremendous cut from Alan Cawthorn at Tru. I was thrilled by the time, thought and effort that he put into making sure that I got exactly the look that I was hoping to get. To be honest, I think that it was the best haircut that I have had in several years.
I really love Salon Tru, Amanda is great. I loved the cut she gave me and I was really nervous about cutting more than an inch off at a place I had never been to. So I called all morning trying to book an appointment and no answer so, I went down and the place was dark and the doors were locked during business hours. I don't know if the shut down or what but, I'm super bummed that was the only place I found that I liked in the area.
I have been going to salon tru for a few months now. I get my brow waxed by alicia. I am always greeted warmly and Alicia is always very friendly. I am never in there longer than 20 minutes. She is effeciant and very precise.
You should try it out if you haven't.
Another great hair cut from Maren! Finally she cut my hair real short!!! Not sure what else to say as I just don't have such an intimate relation to my hair stylist unlike some other reviewers ... :-) Facts are: hair cut is great, place is conveniently located with ample parking, hardly any wait times and $ 35 for a guy's hair cut is great.
Okay, so I am official obsessed with Salon Tru. After having my amazing hair experience with Jonathan I went back for an appointment with Alicia to have my eyelashes tinted. Yes, I said eyelashes.... don't judge.
I have incredibly sensitive skin and eyes and have developed an allergy to most mascara. Like most fabulous females I don't wear a lot of makeup but I do indulge in a little lip gloss, blush and mascara. Well, with my recent discovery of why 98% of the time my eyes are red, burning and watering I had to find a new alternative to mascara.
The alternative I chose was to see Alicia about getting my eyelashes tinted. She assured me I was not crazy and that she too had problems with mascara. After talking to her a bit about the actual tinting I picked out my color! I went with blue-black.... don't judge. She said it would look black most of the time but when I was in the sun it would create more depth.
I laid down, closed my eyes and waited for the tinting to take place. While the color was processing Alicia gave me the best hand massage I have ever had. In the ten minutes she massaged my hands my eyelashes were ready to be revealed. They looked so good!!
I am not going to lie.... it stung a bit but once she took the color off then all was well. It has been about 3 weeks now and all I do is curl my eyelashes in the morning and off I go. I have received so many compliments. My lashes look long and dark! I will never wear mascara again!

Wow, I have had some serious hair nightmares in the last six months... I will not name any names but… Read more »
This is a very nice Aveda Concept salon.
My stylist, Shaina, is wonderful. She really "gets" my hair, and what I want. Unfortunately she moved back to Seattle and is only in town ever 1.5-2 months, but she's worth the wait!
I like this place because it's stylish, without being too Scottsdaley.
When I got married a few months ago, I decided at the last minute that I didn't want to do my own makeup. I called a few places, which were all booked, and then came across Salon . They had an opening with a guy named Jonathan. I took it and I'm SO glad I did. He was really friendly, right on time and did amazing things with my eyes. Best of all, I was in and out in 45 minutes.
I have a friend who cuts my hair and I can't see myself ever getting pro makeup done again. So I probably won't be back. But I'd definitely recommend Jonathan to anyone!
i have now lost 3 hair dressers to Seattle since i have moved here i don't know what's going on but anyway, that's what got me to salon tru, just moved to Scottsdale, there it was on the corner that i passed every day and finally when even my best hat couldn't hide all my hair, i pulled in for what i fear the most.....a walk-in hair cut......ahhhhhhhh. but what a great experience, large facility, amazing staff, everyone in there could have their own place. just walk in and leave with a great hair cut and hair stylist for life* **
* or until they move to Seattle
** stylist does not actually leave with you
Kinda pricey for regular cuts but it is an Aveda salon so it's par for the course. I see Jamie (Jaime?) Dolmage for my cuts and she is really fun to talk to; overall the experience is enjoyable.
It started out great....super cut and color, nice stylist, comfortable shop....pricey but nothing crazy...then back for another visit - good color, ok cut....then another visit - ok color, bad cut...ugh. Why do stylists lose their groove? that is seriously irritating. I couldnt take it, no going back for me. I could have gone back and had her fix it, etc but at that pt - I was just DONE - as in, get me to a new stylist. There may be some other stylists at the shop that are better, but I am not risking it!
