10 reviews for Salon Tewl
I've only been here once but my hubby's been going here for about a year now so I'm sorta reviewing this place for both of us.
Our stylist of choice is Hollie. And she's fantastic. Not only is she a great stylist but she's also a fun person to talk to...super friendly, kinda like a gal pal you've known since college or something.
When I went for my first hair cut with Hollie, we brought our puppy because she had mentioned to the hubs that she wanted to meet our pup. It also happened that we were leaving on our vacation in a couple weeks and were considering which of our friends could dogsit. Well, Hollie met Scout and fell in love. She offered to dogsit our puppy for the whole 12 days we were gone. How cool is that? A hair stylist and dogsitter all in one! :)
Ok, back to the hair cutting, since that's why I'm here. I wanted to try bangs and my hubby was dead set against it. Not that he should have any say in MY hair but he likes to butt in. ;) Hollie not only did a great job on my bangs but also helped me convince the hubby that bangs were right for me. :)
As for my hubby's hair, he loves going to her cus she doesn't use a razor AT ALL. It's all by scissors so his hair looks more natural and not so military. And for all that work it's only $35 for a men's haircut. I think that's the lowest price by any stylist at Salon Tewl.
I am so relieved that I don't have to fly back to LA to see my old stylist for a hair cut. :)
I enthusiastically recommend Hollie! Yay! :)
its not the place- it's the guy i went to...his name is "x" avier..( he likes to pronounce the X )...despicable attitude...insincere advise and a very very condescending way of approaching any recommendation ( he made)...
i'd love to try the salon again - but will most certainly not go back to him....
I've been a regular customer of Salon Tewl since 2005. Kay is my stylist (and has been since 2003) and she does a wonderful job! I've received various hair color and conditioning services as well as haircuts and bang trims.
It's nice to be able to get your hair done in a bright and open atmosphere. They always give me a courtesy reminder phone call the day before each appointment, which adds a nice touch!
This was a fairly miserable waxing service with Izabelle. Not only that, but after tormenting me for 40 minutes, my husband discovered way too many hairs that she missed! Details? OK.
First of all, you have to understand that my ONE star for Salon Tewl IN NO WAY has any reflection on ANY of the other reviews posted here for it, because Salon Tewl is a place where about 20 different stylists, aestheticians, etc., practice as independent operators. They rent their space from the salon, and they're on their own.
The salon itself is pretty but crowded, very busy, and loud. However, it does seem like a happenin' place, so peg your level of chaos-loving and act accordingly. It is, I will say, kept sparkling clean throughout, no small task when you have that many clients coming through.
The gal at the front desk is great; they seem to have an efficient scheduling system.
Izabelle was ready for me quickly and she took me back to the waxing/skin treatment room, which I swear is probably just smaller than my walk-in closet (which is not big). The bed has to be in there at a slight diagonal, it's that small! So it's claustrophobic.
She got started and right away, I knew we were going to have trouble. Clean gloves? Check. Bright light to see what the hell she's doing? There but not turned on. Hmmm. Music to distract? Yes. She did, however, unceremoniously remove the towel covering my nethers, throwing it on a pile in the corner. I'm immodest, having had two babies, but at least PRETEND you care about my modesty!
The wax was too hot. Throughout the session, I told her that no fewer than four times. Her solution was not to turn the wax pot down a little (which is what she should have done) but to wave it around a little in the air before applying it, which barely helped. She didn't burn me, but the most sensitive inner spots are sore today. She also applied TONS of wax in thick layers. WTF?
Her ripping technique sucked. First, she'd test it by pulling three or four hairs slowly. Thanks for that. And then she'd rip the rest fairly slowly too. She hasn't learned the trick of holding the skin taut, either having me do it or doing it herself, which makes the whole thing go much better.... she had me pull my skin out for two or three pulls instead of nearly all of them like my regular gal does.
Worst of all, she waxed each area two or three agonizing times instead of once and then tweezing strays. The final insult to injury is that my husband discovered a large area that she completely missed, and more than ten strays. Unacceptable, especially for $65!
Why on earth did I ever cheat on Bren, over at Bees Waxed Spa in West Seattle? Well, I know why... the drive. It ain't worth it... I'm driving... Bren is BRILLIANT. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Update, 03/13: I am a total chickenshit. I actually went back to this gal for my half-leg wax because I'd already made the appointment and even after being unhappy, wasn't brave enough to cancel it. First thing I told her was, my husband discovered a place that was missed when you did my Brazilian last week... she was clearly pissed when I asked her to fix it: "That's why I had you check to see if I got it all." Sorry girlfriend, but for $65, you should be shining a bright light down there to make sure YOU did YOUR job, not expect me to feel myself up in front of you to make sure it's perfect. She said that wax wasn't hot because she didn't expect to need it, but she did turn it on.
She did a good job on my legs though. I'd maybe go back to her for that for $40.
And she did rewax the two bum spots on my bum. She still didn't use the bright light to check her own work, and she didn't apologize. Whatever. If you don't like doing Brazilians, or don't want to do them right, please just DON'T DO THEM. It's OK. We can go to someone else, I promise.
Visited Salon Tewl for a somewhat urgent haircut since travel had repeatedly prevented me from seeing my regular stylist. They have good (late) hours and accept walk-ins but unfortunately had no open slots the afternoon I strolled in with close to 3 months of shaggy growth needing to be tamed.
Made an appt for the follwing afternoon to see Dawn. Friendly and efficient, she washed, cut, rinsed and styled me much closer to my former clean-cut self. She used a straight razor rather than scissors since it apprently gives a smoother look. A first for me and I must say it does feel nice. She spent a good 45 minutes on it and I'm very satisfied with the results. Price wasn't too bad for a big-city downtown location.
The Salon itself it was quite busy both times I visited but there's just about enough room for all the stylists working there. I'll likely go back again, hopefully before I start to look like a refugee from an 80's hair band!
I was expecting something new, unique and fresh....especially being a savvy downtown Bellevue salon. I had Susan cut my hair, yet had to change the style when I got home, as it was too "grown-up" for me! And I was surprised that some ends were not even, as well. Unfortunately, for $55 I won't risk going back!
I live in San Francisco, but I don't trust anyone else to cut my hair! Everytime I visit Seattle I get my hair done by Heidi and I'm always happy with my new cut!
Hollie consistently does a great job at cutting my hair. She's very personable, has impeccable style, and knows what she's doing. She's also a very cute girl ;) Thanks Hollie!
RE: LUCY - WAXING DIVA FROM BRAZIL
In short, this was amazing and not painful - just a small sting like pulling a band aid. My appointment was originally scheduled for Tuesday but then I got anxious and found out Lucy (the wax diva) had time tonight. Whee. It took seriously less than 30 minutes from the time I said hello to the time I gave my credit card. It did hurt but I thought it hurt less than doing the eye brows. Do you wax your brows? The bottom part of my brow always hurts and the top part is more of a temporary sting. This was like doing the top part. It felt seriously like a band aid being removed, the pain lasts for seconds and then you feel kinda warm. If you are even half considering it, just do it. This girl is amazing. She's totally friendly and professional. She just just applying the wax and doing her thing and all the while you're chatting as if this was some long time friend... I didn't ever feel weird about being half dressed which is unusual for me bc I feel weird around my gyno who has seen me undressed for years now.
I get my hair cut and semi-permanent colored by Marta at Salon Tewl. She is an artist. You can bring in a picture of a cut you like and she'll tell you if it would work and then, if so, makes it look just like the photo. She takes into account your hair texture, your lifestyle, your face to make the right cut work for you. When I asked for a color suggestion so my hair color wouldn't look helmet-like (I wanted to stay close to my natural color to cover up grays but didn't want one solid dark color) she knew just what to try and I loved the results. Marta is sweet, down-to-earth and very interesting to talk to if you're feeling like a chat. She makes you feel like you're visiting a friend and seems to really love her work.
She gave me a long layered cut that didn't say "layers!" but helped with body and better suited my face shape than one length. It was the first time in my life after many haircuts by many different stylists that I had the right haircut for my long hair. When I go short--Katie Holmes pre bangs length short or Cate Blanchett short--I'll be taking the plunge with Marta.
