Angela Casler transformed me. It's true!
Back in June, when I was asked to model for the Yelp fashion show, I presented Angela (who at the time was at the now defunct Anne Kelso Salon) with the idea of changing me from a bright blonde to a sassy redhead. I was unsure, and nervous, but she encouraged me to take the plunge. And then once she mentioned that she was board certified colorist, I told her to let 'er rip! Wow. I was a new person from that night on, and my inner pinup girl has come to full fruition.
Cut to last week. I wanted to refresh my color and possibly recreate the retro style that I wore in the fashion show for the Yelp Elite event at The Highball. Angela fit me in during a weekday, and I found myself at her adorable new home at Salon Sovay. It's so cute! She even has her own well-lit, private room. We discussed what I was wanting (cooler, darker red that still had a decidedly "fashion-y" feel to it; "fashion-y" is a stylist term that almost reminds me of "pitch-y" in it's colloquialism). We chatted as she worked about how she had been and what had been going on in my life as well since we had last seen each other. She has her Austin Fashion Awards golden boot sitting proudly on her table.
Angela loves her some Kevin Murphy products...she's almost like a groupie. But for good reason. I don't know what she put in my hair to set it with rollers, but the roller set you see in the photo I attached last for THREE DAYS. And I didn't even have to sleep standing up. It was amazing. I got tons of compliments at the party, and I'm very happy with my new color. This woman loves what she does, and it shows. A true artist.
Heather Davis rocks! I have had 2 cuts with her now and an amazing color job. She is detail oriented and is a great communicator which is a must in hair stylist. The last thing you want is for someone to clarify how you want your hair after they have cut it! The cut is a short cut and it is so beautiful; I get compliments on it all the time. She definitely worked with me on my color and really explained the process and the difference each decision would make, without it being overwhelming. Her prices are better than what I used to pay and my hair looks more amazing than it has in years.
I also recommended a friend and she is now waxing poetic about Heather too.
Charlie Hodges is amazing. Really, there are no other words. I had my first hair appointment in Austin with him, after going to the same stylist in Philadelphia since I was 15. I have tough hair. It's flat and fine and it has to be damaged to do anything, so I've been keeping it a light blonde just so I can hold a style. Charlie gave me the best blonde, a light light platinum with the least amount of gold.
I've never been so pleased with a color before in my life. And can we talk about the cut? I like having an edge. No boring hair for me. I have short hair and Charlie managed to keep it funky but feminine at the same time. It's an uniquely me cut, and he was a complete perfectionist about it.
On top of all this, he's an all-around cool guy. He's a good conversationalist, really down to earth, and made me feel comfortable immediately. It's clear that hair is what he loves and he takes a lot of pride in his work. I can't wait to come back and see him again, I know I've found the perfect stylist for me in Austin.
As a final note, I want to comment on the overall great business ethics of the salon. I originally called Sovay, since I'd read her reviews first. After a long talk about my hair type and style, she recommended Charlie to me. She knew that he was best suited to my aesthetic, and for a business to be so honest and so eager to please the customer is a rare thing these days.
Go to Salon Sovay, see Charlie, and you won't regret it.
Was thinking about looking for a new stylist, and Heather was a friend of a friend so I gave her a try. Totally worth it. I have a very punk rock haircut with color all over. She is meticulous about my color and exhaustive in the instruction phase to make sure what she does is just what you want. She has tricks up her sleeve (I think she learned them in London) and knows how to make an edgy cut work and avoid potential trainwrecks. She'll chat with me, but she doesn't get offended if I doze off. I can't help it sometimes -- haircuts are like a head massage for me, it's very soothing to have the shears and combs running through my hair!
Heather Davis is awesome! She has been cutting and coloring my hair for over a year and she is probably the best stylist and colorist I have ever had. Last weekend she did an up-do for my wedding and my maid or honor and did an AMAZING job on both. She constantly does better and more then I expect, and even makes suggestions to realize my "vision" for my cut or color. She always takes time to consult with me way before even starting the process. I would highly recommend her 100%!!!
I get my hair cut by Heather at Salon Sovay. She is excellent. I'm a pale skinned redhead with a beard so I didn't have a lot going for me when I went in for my first cut, but somehow Heather turned me into a decent looking dude. She takes her time, doesn't rush you out the door and tells you what you need to know to take care of your hair. Absolutley great.
I went to Brooke Boales, and she was great! She took her time and made sure that every strand of hair on my head was exactly like I wanted it to be. I got so many complements after I left the salon. My hair was also so soft that I couldn't stop touching it!!! She also waxed and shaped my eyebrows, which I really needed!
Oh, and the mini Dr. Pepper's are great too!
I have been going to Heather Davis for all my hair needs for the last seven years. Even while I live in England, I look forward to my trips home to have Heather cut & style my hair (sometimes I even go for some colour!).
Heather takes time with each of her clients to make sure that they are happy with what she is doing. She doesn't rush herself and continually makes sure her client is happy.
My seven years with Heather have included super-long curly hair, highlights, pink streaks, short cropped hair, dyed back to my natural colour, and my wedding hair. Yes, Heather came to my wedding and did my hair, plus all of my bridesmaid's hair. It was amazing!

UPDATE (6/2008): Henri is now at Ultraviolet Salon a bit further north at 1632 S. 1st. His phone is 512-476-2346.
Henri Molle, of Barocca Studio, now works out of this salon. I've been going to Henri for color since 2000 or so, then started having him also cut my hair about 4 years ago. I have yet to find anyone who does a better job! I have been living in Washington DC for the past few years and always had to get my hair done when I was home in Austin for a visit. My hair is very thick but fine and he always makes it look great. Henri, who is French, is also more interesting than your average person - he is a trapeze artist and photographer as well as stylist!
Wow. Salon Sovay is the BEST salon I have ever been to. The salon is so peaceful, relaxing and stylish without being pretentious and overpriced. The salon owner, Sovay, is extrememly meticulous, detail oriented, and gave me the best highlights I have EVER, ever received. Not a day goes by that I don't have at least three people ask me where I got my hair cut and colored. On top of being so talented, Sovay is also so nice and friendly and fun to chat with while getting my hair done. I like Sovay so much I had her do my hair for my wedding, and that of my bridesmaids. She can do it all - cut, color, highlights, lowlights, whatever. I'm almost afraid to tell anyone else how great this place is because I don't want Sovay to be overbooked. Fortunately the other stylists at the salon seem to be really great too.
