I came to Farouk based on a coworkers recommendation. I've had the same hair stylist for the past 10 years and needed a change. The thought of having someone else do my hair was downright scary. What if they destroy my hair and make me look like a poodle?! Ok, not that bad but I was apprehensive but decided to give it a shot.

The salon is bright, clean and inviting. Conveniently located off PCH  10 min from my house is great. Immediately I was put to ease by Farouk, he listened very patiently to my requests and never once made me feel rushed. He definitely takes his time to get it right. My color and cut turned out beautifully. I couldnt ask for anything more!

Getting my hair cut here was something of an odd experience:

I got to town badly needing a haircut and after a quick Yelp search I called  and was given an appointment with Farouk the next morning. Yay!

When I arrived he greeted me and introduced me to one of his other stylists and asked if it was okay if she cut my hair. Sure, no problem! There were good reviews of everybody here.

Farouk then proceeded to get out his cell phone and talk to someone the entire time I was getting my hair cut. While sitting on the couch in front. To me this was entirely unprofessional, but to each his own.

The awkwardness continued when one of the other stylists sat down behind the front desk and appeared to glare at my stylist the entire time. Or me, I'm not sure. But every time I looked up into the mirror this lady was staring one of us down. It was weird.

Honestly the entire salon seemed on edge. Nobody seemed to want to acknowledge each other; I felt like I had walked into a room after a big fight. I was relieved when I could get out of there.

The cut itself was fine, nothing spectacular but looked good and has grown out well. I would probably give the salon another chance were it not for the ambiance. I left feeling much more stressed out than when I arrived.

I got a voucher to get a free hair cut & style, deep conditioning, and some highlights too.  It was a great deal and my stylist, Lauren, was great.  She's not too talkative (sometimes I'm just tired and don't have the energy to maintain a lively conversation) but also isn't too shy.

The first haircut she gave me was the best I ever had.  My hair fell just the right way and my bangs were just the right length.  The second time I got a trim and I think I asked for too much layering, so parts of my hair felt a bit too fluffy later.  I'm about to go back again and this time just get a trim without any extra layering!

I used to see Farouk at his first place in the Riviera Village.  I would get a shampoo and a cut  be out of there within the hour.

I got hitched, now we have daughter, and hadn't really made the time to get an appointment in the past.

Now, he has moved his place onto PCH in South Redondo, next to Japonica and across from the Beach Cities Bank on Avenue F, which is right around the corner and a 30 second walk from our house (but crossing PCH can take longer depending on the traffic). Street parking is OK, and might suck if it was a busy part of the day or week,  but there are lots on both sides of the building.

The new place is sweet, spacious,  free of big clumps of hair, well air-conditioned (I think the door was open for a bit when I was getting shampooed)  and Farouk's stylist's greeted me first, then Farouk did, directing me toward their magazines to wait a few minutes (I was a few minutes late and had r/s this appt when I found out there was a cancellation that day, Saturday).

A few minutes later, he came over and shook hands, then got reacquainted and got to the chair and then got busy.

THE GREAT THING ABOUT FAROUK (AND THE STAFF THERE):  He's paying very close attention to what I'm saying  about what I want  done on my hair, with an intense concentration.  When I finished talking, he kind of summarized what I had said and offered some suggestions, which seemed like they were the same thing I said, but it really was more subtle, different, and better (I believe it was about the sides and how it was going to get cut ).   After he said that,  I was happy, knowing he understood.   Then he could execute the cut, but shampooing was first and Farouk helped me to the sink, where another staff person washed and conditioned my hair.

The rest was a breeze like the one coming in from the door that sunny afternoon . I'm sure my styled cut isn't complex or groundbreaking, but I have no problem trusting him to get it done.  (He carries a conversation better  and easier than anyone holding a sharp object)Looks great, wife loves it and I'll be back.

I don't typically yelp immediately after an experience with a business, so I 'm embarrassed to write that I don't know what the cut cost!
But I also am better and understanding the difference between quality and cost -- Jim Morrison once said, ""Some of the worst mistakes of my life have been haircuts." I don't think people will feel that way at this place.

The people at the Salon make you feel comfortable with friendliness, knowledge and expertise.  We have to trust someone to cut it, right?

Carrie Bradshaw knows good sex, and Lauren Shofner knows good hair! The quality of her work surpasses the price by far. Don't let her youthful good looks fool you - she's got experience AND she's a natural (Ladies, you can't buy good hands. Even if Harvard had a school of cosmetology, that's only nurture. Good hands are a gift from God. Can I get an amen?!).

I went to this salon at the last minute. I honestly thought to myself, "I really need a trim and some highlights!" at 5 p.m. on a Wednesday. After quickly reading some Yelp reviews for nearby salons, I headed over, walked-in, and was immediately greeted by the very friendly owner Farouk (ever stood in a salon lobby for 15+ minutes?  feeling like an idiot while receptionists in Prada heels that cost twice their rent ignore you? all the while they're trying furiously to look busy? If you haven't, let's just the warm, welcoming feeling that Farouk exudes is hard to come by. (Oh yeah, in case you haven't noticed, class and good customer service are in short supply these days...let's reward the people who still know the value of a smile and a pleasant demeanor. ) I said I didn't have an appointment, but was hoping they could fit me in. Ten minutes later, Lauren was working her magic on my hair (I've waited 3x as long for stylists I actually DID have an appointment with!).

I have what I consider "difficult hair", so when someone transforms it, I have to give them a shout out. If you have long hair, or have ever heard, "It's only hair, it'll grow back". and resisted the urge to shave that person's head to make sure they still want to stand by that statement, rest assured, you can leave the Xanax at home when you go see Lauren. And that, my friends, is priceless :)

I like this guy! I walked in on Tuesday without an appointment a couple of weeks ago for the first time, no problem. Farouk was friendly, asked me questions about how I wore my hair and examined its texture. He is precise and meticulous. Typically it takes a couple of visits to a new stylist  before they dial in how I like it, but Farouk got it right the first time. Thanks, Farouk, you rock!!

So many salons, but where to go?  This is a great place...quiet, friendly and experienced.  They have stylists who can get your color perfect, and get that cut just right.  If you want a solution for your hair...go see Mitzi.  She will solve your problems.

I have been going to Farouk for my hair cuts and color for 10 years.  He is an expert in his field and I know that my hair (which  I am very particular about) is safe in his hands.  I always leave his salon very happy with my hair.  I very highly recommend him to anyone.
