I've been to a lot of salons in Philly. I'm sort of a slut of salons, I'll admit it. I've been around.
But I'm not to blame, it's my hair. Really, I swear.
I've got long curly hair and it's like my safety blanket. I'm not vain, but I'm really picky about the styling and cutting of my hair. Because of the curls, one swift move could quickly turn my head into a mushroom.
So in 5 years, I've been to roughly to twelve (probably more) salons in search of a stylist who would actually give a damn, listen to me, not pass me off to a billion of assistants and is reasonably priced.
And this is where Faith at Salon at 5th came in. By recommendation of a friend of course. I was skeptical, at first. The location: society hill. Across from a Superfresh. Double Yikes. The place: kinda small and unassuming. It wasn't ultra-cool like American Mortals, or super chi-chi like Pierre & Carlo - the place was just (and is) a basic, clean salon without the bells and whistles where you can get a really good haircut without an attitude or a hefty price tag.
Faith did (and has done, because I'm now a faithful client) exactly what I asked and just worked her magic. She was cool, down-to-earth and knew what she was doing. I wasn't rushed through and I was pleased with the results. Though I can't speak for the other stylists there, two of my other girlfriends get their hair done by Bernadette and love her work.
Faith + my hair = fabulous! I just had my first visit and have found a new stylist. We chatted about some ideas I had, and Faith let me know what would work and what wouldn't. She'll give you exactly what you want if you ask, but I'd take her recommendations. She gave me a great cut that was what I wanted and more. As a bonus, she's a cool chick and fun to chat with while she worked. I learned that despite being young, she's been cutting hair for a long time and has a lot of experience.
The salon itself is nice--comfortable and clean but not flashy. There's a place to hang your coat, a nice rest room where I was able to change shirts (so I didn't have to go back to work with hair all over my work shirt), and beverages. It was my lunch hour, so I had to say no to a glass of wine, unfortunately. There is also a woman who does manicures and pedicures (even spa pedicures), so it's a one-stop shop for grooming.
I highly recommend this place. Be sure to ask for Faith!
The one thing in my life that is 100% low maintenance is my hair. We have an unspoken agreement that I won't torture it with products and instruments and it will in return not look like cold booty. So you might think that I'm not too picky about hair salons, but it takes a lot of talent to cut a nice easy-to-take-care-of coif that doesn't look totally boring! That's where John comes in. He is a great hair stylist and always listens to what I ask for (which is usually "anything that will work without a hairdryer"). Despite my complete lack of styling technique I never fail to get several compliments following a visit to Salon at 5th. That sure says a lot about the talented staff here. To top it all off, the place is very comfortable and inviting, the shampoos and conditioners smell fabulous, and there is always some water/tea/coffee ready and waiting.
Faith has cut my hair a few times, and every time, I loved it! They were also nice to keep offering me water on a hot day. The price is fine, because the haircut was what I wanted and had described. That's pretty hard for me to find.
