Sally's is SF's own seafood shack at Fisherman's Wharf. It features a short menu of fried seafood or chicken with chips, 2 sandwiches (chickenwich or fishwich) and beer.
Important tips:
* They will validate parking for 1 hour. It's the middle of tourist central so this comes in very handy
* Eat your sandwich immediately or it will become a soggy mess. But if you don't want to dine with seagulls that seem to be a permanent fixture by Sally's outdoor picnic tables, take your sandwich back to your car or walk over to Pier 39
* If you're not starving, get the halfwich ($5). The fishwich is enormous.
Fishwich ($8) - no skimping here, the two battered and deep fried (fried to order) fish filets (cod?) are huge and they pile on their slaw. Everything is held together with a soft, sweet roll. I waited an hour to eat the sandwich and the roll was soggy. The fish was soggy too. The batter was salty and bland. But the shredded cabbage, red onion, carrot, cilantro, jalapeno dressed in olive oil slaw was glorious - light, vibrant, crunchy, tangy and delicious. I love how it's a bit spicy. However, the sandwich was way too soggy to be enjoyable. I ate it about an hour after it was made.Helpful 14Thanks 0Love this 13Oh no 0 - Rodney H.San Francisco, CA495512374598Mar 18, 2013
Three words: Big fish sandwich!
Yeah there's no denying it, Sally's Famous Fishwich is like a Filet O' fish on 'roids. It's a sad shame that this spot is dead in the middle of all the tourist traps at Fisherman's Wharf, but if you can get past all the tourists, their Fishwich is totally worth the trip.
Just take look at this and drool: http://bit.ly/XTLque
OMG!! It's just ridiculous how massive this sandwich is! But what I like about it is that it's not overly huge that it'll put you to sleep, but it's a perfect serving size. The fish is crispy on the outside and moist and flavorful inside and the slaw makes it a very balanced sandwich. They also have this in a Chickenwich variety with the same slaw and I've probably had something similar at Macellato's in North Beach, but that place has been closed down.
If you're in the Wharf and want a good golden fried fish or chicken sandwich for lunch, I highly recommend Sally's. You'll get your money's worth!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Mar 20, 2012
You see the size of this thing? Nessiewich is more like it. Hippopotawich. Holy cod.
Sporting dead basic seating in the waiting room next door, Sally's may be a cash only hole-in-the-wharf, but I'm betting you've got $8 in change swimming around your fanny pack, so saddle up and order the namesake sandwich. Slaw is vinegar based and loaded to the gills (ha!) with cilantro. Lovers rejoice! Haters gon' REALLY hate. The only downside was simple bread, but by gully, that buttermilk-battered filet was perfectly fried.
I did sample yelper-beloved garlic fries and found them to be a bit too heavy on the bulb. On the bright side, it's now a part of my DNA, making me highly undesirable for the impending vampire apocalypse.
Wearing the tourist badge proudly, I solefully endorse this FW icon!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Michelle L.San Francisco, CA396390438Aug 30, 2012
Way better alternative than your usual Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf tourist trap restaurants!! This place is LEGIT in terms of prices, portions, service, and taste!
Based on Yelp reviews, my friend and I decided to give this place a try since we were visiting a friend at the Pier. It's a nice little stand which has outdoor and indoor seatings (for those who are grossed out by pigeons and seagulls like me). The cashier who took our order was super nice! We ordered the fish and chips, and was able to substitute with garlic fries (yum) for $8! SO CHEAP, compared to the prices other places are charging!! We also asked for cups of water, but he said it would be $1 each, so we decided to get drinks elsewhere afterwards.
While waiting for our order, we overheard this man say, "Hey, I ordered a halfwich, not a full one," while pointing at his "whole" sandwich cut in half. The cook then tells him that it was indeed a "half". The only difference between the half and the whole is that in the halfwich, you get half the fish (but you still get a full sized bun and coleslaw). Even though it's just a half, it was still pretty massive and I'm pretty sure you'll be able to share it with someone if both of you aren't too hungry! What a steal for $5 - a meal for two! :)
We finally got our order and the cashier gave us the best looking one out of the bunch (the one that was less fried/burnt looking/dark). SWEET! Also, he whispered to us to give us two free cups of water!! WHAT A LOVELY MAN!!! Took our fish and chips inside with condiments and basically stared at it for a minute. IT WAS A MASSIVE PIECE OF FISH WITH A LOAD OF GARLIC FRIES! What a deal!! The cod and garlic fries can feed two people. The cod was fresh, crunchy on the outside and, moist and soft melt-in-your-mouth like on the inside! The batter was not too greasy or oily either! As for the fries, boy were they garlicky! They're not kidding when they say garlic fries! That intense flavor of garlic can turn off some people, but it's really delicious! I can still taste the garlic in my mouth as I write this review..
In sum, please do yourself a favor and skip all the tourist traps. Come here instead for a fresh, yummy, and inexpensive meal! :)Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - May 27, 2012
Sally's Fishwich is located in Fisherman's Wharf, a neighborhood that the locals avoid. "Local", in this case, is the 9-county Bay Area. Take a stroll down Jefferson Street, and you see what I mean. Unfortunately, that means missing out on some real gems that offer good local flavor. In this case, the seafood restaurants, one which is Sally's Fishwich.
Happily, it does not have a touristy vibe. It's a small storefront without the kitsch, a parking lot away from the mob on Jefferson Street. You stand outside and order from the menu with fewer than 10 items and only one size of soft drink. Sit indoors or outdoors.
I had the fishwich. Only three ingredients - fish, cole slaw, and sourdough bread - and that's all it needed for a huge tasty meal. My wife had fish & chips [fries], my girl had chips only. The fish was a huge slab, my hunny is not a big eater, and she finished it all because it was all so goooooood, Like others have said, $8 for a sandwich looks pretty pricey until you see the size of the sandwich, and be prepared to not need to eat for the rest of the day.
Trust me, it's worth gritting your teeth as you walk through the touristy carnival to eat at this place. A great find!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Sep 6, 2013
It's actually Alfonso's Scunatelli's Famous Fishwich.
It's located inside Franciscan Crab restaurant.
Not sure how the original fishwich tasted but it was pretty good, I enjoyed my sandwich or should I say fishwich. The size of the fish was generous. Something I hate about fish sandwiches is that sometimes they have more breading than the actual fish. NOT HERE! It's all about the fish. The coleslaw on top was good too! YAY! :)
Plus there was plenty of seating outside/inside of the whole establishment which is always awesome! ^^Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Smitcha B.Los Angeles, CA8527919671Aug 10, 2010
Salty's? Man, that name doesn't sit well especially when I'm ordering Clam Chowder in the sourdough bread bowl. What's the secret sauce? No wait, don't answer that question. We stopped at Salty's because I've tried a few spots off the street vendors and even Boudin's at the Wharf. All were good but just trying to expand the horizons.
What I do like about Salty's is they have picnic wooden benches you can sit at. If you want to sit indoors, then go to one of the many restaurants in the area. If you don't mind standing, then hit up the vendors right off the street. If you don't mind sharing benches, then you'll be fine at Salty's.
I didn't get to sample their infamous Fishwich but that super steroid fish fillet looked like a mean sandwich.
The clam chowder was made perfectly especially on this gloomy/chilly day. The bread wasn't stale; soft in the middle and chewy on the the outside. Also, it doesn't take long to get after you order it unlike the fishwiches which contains a lot more ingredients.
As for the name "Salty's" goes... don't worry, my chowder didn't taste like it contained pure sodium or any other secret sauces.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - K L.San Francisco, CA1456822162Jul 30, 2012
(2) $8 Fishwich http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/t19omYMHrAi3VLTapq0uzg?select=YgKxfVB_Ey6e8WEeZihk6w#VpMl4ZeOrWAa46SRXtB01w
(1) $8 Fish n Chips
(1) $3 Chips
(1) Bread Bowl
(2) drinks
All of this fed a family of 7. It was delicious! The fishwich is huge, don't attempt to eat it by yourself. The right amount of slaw, fish, & bread ratio was perfect.
As for the seagulls and pigeons, we decided to not eat outside and avoid them, so we ended up eating inside.
Thinking about that fishwich makes my mouth water just a bit.
P.S. Restrooms get a star, not for cleanliness, but they have TWO and it can be hard to find a restroom at the Wharf without having to wait 15 minutes in line for.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - May 15, 2011
FINALLY - I have found a great fish sandwich that doesn't cost a ton of money. You would think, well maybe just me, I would think living next to the ocean we would see fish sandwiches everywhere like you do in my home country (Pittsburgh Pa). But you don't - but now I have found it.
Excellent fish sandwich on a roll w/ a really tasty beer batter on it. The fries are the slightly seasoned kind, and deep fried shrimp. Heaven.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jun 6, 2012
Full props to my buddy Bronsen K. for discovering this place. We didn't even realize it was so well-reviewed on Yelp until after we saw it in an assuming building off to the side, and the intimidation of high expectations was palpable. We decided to split a fishwich and took our bounty to the nearby Boudin Bakery, which is a nice place to sit on a windy day, and we dug in to some fishy goodness.
The key thing that makes it all work is how wonderful the fish is, with a light crunchy outer layer and a moist fluffy interior that actually looks like it came from a fish. If that didn't work, then none of the crunchy, thick layers of slaw or lovely condiments (tip: add lemon juice, vinegar, and tartar sauce at once and in modest amounts for epic win) would have mattered. I was pretty stuffed from our previous food encounter not more than a couple hours ago, so my half of the sandwich was more than enough.
If you're anywhere close to being in the mood for a fish sandwich, skip all the fancy restaurants and tourist traps and go to this joint. They fully deserve the hype.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
