Sala Thai - I miss you! Since moving to Phoenix, I have had some very decent, flavorful Thai (Malee's, Benjarong, Wild Thaiger), but nothing so far has compared to the dependable, reasonably-priced, and always delicious Sala Thai. In the 1.5 years we lived in Fremont, we probably sat and ate at Sala 8 times and got to-go from them, I don't know, maybe 40 times? We had our favorites (Red Duck Curry, Pad Kee Mao, Pineapple Fried Rice, Mango Crispy Chicken), but pretty much everything we ever tried was delicious. Less frequent but just as solid choices of ours included: Spare Ribs, Eggplant Salad, Pad Thai, Basil Fried Rice. The entrees range in price from $7 to $13. Sad. I'm salivating just thinking about it. When my husband and I return to the Bay Area, we will most definitely be stopping by for a pig-out at Sala.

I used to go here when it was Tavin's joint years ago...when i was working across the street. It was not as nicely decorated as it is now. Loved Tavin's cooking, also because it was a mix of American grill food and Thai...I'd have a variety of orders each week from a rockin burger one day to Pad See Eiw the next day. Since the change to Sala Thai, i've noticed that it's authentic Thai food only on the menu, and they truly live up to it!
I'm so happy they left Musammun on the menu, because it's a rare Thai curry dish. That's my fave curry order. When it comes to soups, I'd usually get the Tom Kha Ta Lay...it's sour and with coconut broth...mmm good. For my fave noodle dish I'd still go for the Pad See Eiw, although I liked Tavin's better. The fried banana with ice cream priced at around $4 was a smaller portion than Tavin's at the same price. And the Roti can be bigger, like at other Thai restaurants. Still very reasonable prices, still plenty of parking. And the staff is very polite. Since I haven't been to other Thai restaurants in Fremont, I guess I can say that it's the best Thai restaurant I've only been to in Fremont.

Go to this Sala Thai restaurant, not the one near Nummi plant. First of all, the decor is much nicer! Our group sat in a private section with cushion seats and interesting decorations. Secondly, the service was so much better! Our waitress refilled our water and gave our group 5 forks when dessert came. In addition, she would check on us during the dinner.
The food is pretty good. I tried some of the basil fried rice- a simple, yet tasty dish! The rice was coated very well with their sauce.
I ordered the duck curry. I tried the penang curry at the Sala Thai #2, and it was way too sweet. Luckily the duck curry had some spiciness to offset the sweetness. The duck curry was decent, but there was mostly duck skin! I was disappointed that there wasn't more duck meat. Otherwise, the curry was tasty with the pineapple, tomatoes, bell peppers, and the sauce.
For dessert, I nibbled on some sticky rice with mango slices. The sticky rice had some condensed milk in it, and was really sticky and too sweet for me! We had some difficulties trying to separate the rice from each other. Not sure if I would order the dessert again.
15% gratuity is automatically placed on the bill for groups over 5.
One bathroom in the back of the restaurant for men and women to share. Eh, the bathroom needed some air freshener.

This is the best Thai Restaurant in the Bay Area, no doubt. Everything is cooked perfectly, very saucey (I'm a sauce person so this place does justice with saucey tastey foodies). All the curries are fantabulous. The garlic shrimp really means garlic shrimp, so if you're a garlic person, you're going to looove this dish. I just really love this place. Really, truly.
One time I had lunch here with my family, and as a dish came in, thinking it was pad thai, yet it seemed a little discolored and not "pad thai" at all. Nevertheless, I tossed and turned the noodles until I realized... "this isn't pad thai..." so I stop and wait for the waitress to come back. As she took the plate away, apologizing, I lick and eat a little of what she had put on our table from my fork I used. AND BOY WAS IT THE BEST TASTING THING I'VE HAD THERE! So I asked her what it was, and it was "CRAB PAD THAI". YUP everyone, it is a SECRET dish that is NOT on the menu! For you Sala-Thai-ians, better get up on it if you haven't already! My cousin ordered it the other day drooling over how great it was. I have yet to order a plate for myself, but that one bite of REAL crab, and different sense of pad thai flavoring, is something to put a memory stamp on my taste buds!
There's not much more I'd like or want to say, except. My faaaavorite!

I've been here a couple times now and WOW its good!
Sala Thai has a surprisingly nice interior given its location in a vanilla-as-they-come strip-mall. Once you step inside, you immediately forget you are in the exciting land of Fremont.
The service is very attentive and nice, and the time from ordering to piping-hot-tasty-thai-food-on-my-plate is some of the fastest I've ever experienced.
Today I ordered the drunken noodle lunch special - after tip/tax about $10 - and I was mesmerized by how flavorful and fresh it tasted!
I'm not sure how much longer I'll be working in Fremont, but I sure as hell know where to go when its lunchtime!
Note to Sala Thai: Can we get #3 somewhere near Berkeley? Just give the boot to one of the many mediocre Thai restaurants over that way and I'm sure you will do well!

Excellent thai food! I happen to work right down the street and can't resist a order of chicken green curry and a thai iced tea at lunch. Price is about right for thai food. Service is fast. Me an my coworkers can be in and out in 30min.
Luv the food. soup is excellent and if you pick correct timings, u will find relaxed seats for the family. Kids luv the food
I think their food is excellent. I loved Pake Mao Shrimp, medium spicy-perfect!!! My friend loves their Pad Thai.
I will go back more often, love it.
If they'd do somthing more with the ambiance I'd give it 5 stars but it's a perfect lunch place.
I love Sala Thai, and it is the only Thai place in Fremont I will go. While the restaurant is small, and can get very busy, the food is worth the wait. Everything is good, and we've never been disappointed with anything we've eaten there.
Do not miss trying the sticky rice with mango for dessert. yummmm

Best Thai Restaurant in Fremont. My fav is the yellow curry chicken, chicken satay and the fried catfish. I eat way too much rice when I come here. The sauce on the yellow curry chicken is so yummy, I just can't waste a single drop of it. I'd lick the plate if no one was looking. Family owned and operated, they are extremely friendly and the prices and portions are right on the money.
Best Thai food I've ever had in my opinion. I've been to 4 other Thai restaurants around the Bay Area and this one has got to be the best one. I've been to Crunk Thai in San Jose, Banana Leaf in Milpitas, Lime Leaf in Castro Valley, & Banh Thai in Fremont...
Good service and great food! Sala Thai has reasonable prices for the amount of food they give you. The serve really fast... if they served any slower, it would still be worth the wait!! I give them a two thumbs up!!
More ambience than most Thai places; a little bit tacky in the back, but that's OK. Friendly service. Fantastic beef salad. Mr. R. dislikes beef (seriously!) but even he thought it tasted amazing. Their massaman curry's not my favorite (so far, Amarin's in Sacramento is), but it was still very good. The sweet roti is VERY VERY sweet, so be prepared--if you don't want tons of sugar, you might enjoy the mango with sticky rice more.
Worth braving the peculiar little shopping area it's in--I know it doesn't look like you'd find much good in there, but you will.
Authentic, home cooked style Thai food. I took a Thai cooking class with Kasma Loha-unchit http://www.yelp.com/bi... and I think she would approve of the cooking here. Roasted chili paste flavor in the Tom Yum, Kaffir lime leaf in the sauteed dishes, liberal use of fish sauce... all the spices and herbs were spot on and the seasoning perfect. The only thing I missed was the condiment tray, but the absence of which fit the ambiance of the place. It's a more elegant type of restaurant and I noticed a big party celebrating there tonight, wine and all.
We started with the Larb, with ground chicken, mint, red onions, chilis, seasoned with fish sauce and lime, and served with 2 types of lettuce. The server asked "spicy?" but I was a bit hesitant with my response so I think the kitchen held back a little. Still it was quite tasty eaten with the standard sticky rice pairing.
Next came the Tom Yum Gai, a sour shrimp stock based soup served with chicken, onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes. You can also order this soup with prawns. It came in a "hot pot" over fire which kept it hot at our table. This soup tasted exactly the way I was taught to cook it, stock made from shrimp shells, lemongrass, and galanga amongst other things, and the added complexity of roasted chili paste. Excellent.
Last, we tried a sauteed dish, Spicy String Beans. The string beans were like Chinese style dry fried string beans, and it's served with your option of meat, carrots, bell peppers, and basil. We opted for beef, which was perfect as the pieces were thinly sliced and picked up all the spices from dish. I usually judge a Thai kitchen with their sauteed dishes and Sala Thai's didn't fail to impress.
Best Thai I've had in the Tri-City so far... 4.5 stars for now.

This place is very good. I looove the Panang Curry! But the green curry was only okay. My husband loves the pad kee mow. We often call in our order and take it home, because the prices are quite reasonable for a rushed weekday dinner meal. But the atmosphere is actually really nice, so it's nice to eat there too.
I was in the area for work and craving some Pad Thai, so I turned to Yelp and was not disappointed. There were recommendations for so many other dishes, but I wanted to try my old stand by. I do have a question that I will preface with admitting that my knowledge of Thai food is extremely limited. Does anyone know why some Pad Thai is an orange/red, while other Pad Thai is more of a light brown? It seems like there's a pretty even split among the Thai places that I have eaten at as to which kind of Pad Thai they serve. I prefer the sweeter, lighter brown Pad Thai. Sala Thai's was the orange kind and I thought it was the best of its kind that I have tried.
This is how I would imagine food from Thailand to taste like.
The food was extremely flavorful but not over-spiced.

Favorite eat out place of ours.
warning: order one spice level less than you're used to. We usually get mild-medium.
The fried rices and noodles are a bit oily for our liking.
Their gravies are fresh, and their coconut sauces are thick and tasty
Their veggies are very fresh too
Our favorites are:
pad eggplant with chkn (YUMMY..best we;ve had)
green / yellow/red curries with chkn
tom Kha , pot
and ....mango with sticky rice

This place can easily be missed since it is not located near major streets. Also, the plaza seems quiet in the evening but when we went, it was a Tuesday night and it was full of people.
The food is really good but the portion, to me, is a little small. We ordered Po Piah Tod (deep fried spring rolls) as a starter. They came steaming hot and were very tasty. Light, not greasy. For dinner, we ordered Num Tok Neur (Beef salad), Pad Ma Kuer (sauteed sliver of beef, eggplant, basil, bell pepper, black bean in chili sauce) and beef Panang curry. All were very good. They also have exceptional jasmine rice; the aroma was good and it was very delicious for white rice. We were too stuffed to order desserts, so I'll have to save that for the next visit.
The waitress was very friendly, always had a smile on her face. The waiter could be more friendly but he was good at refilling our water and was attentive. Just not as warm as I would like to see.
I definitely would go back again to try other dishes. My one complaint, as mentioned earlier, is that I wished the portions could be bigger.
I've just been for lunch, but their Pra Ram is great! Fresh, crispy broccoli and what a great peanut sauce! The place is very popular without being noisy or crowded-feeling. The decor lifts it up from its strip-mall setting- exposed wood beams and panelling and sophisticated lighting.
Yummy food and great service.
I found this place because I used to live a block away. Thai food is my favorite and if you know of a place better, please fill me in. I have tried several dishes here but my favorite is the pad prik pao with beef. It's just beef with onions and green & red peppers in chili sauce but I haven't had anything like it anywhere else. It it so tasty. I also always get the fried rice with fried chicken, yes fried chicken! And the yellow curry with chicken. I moved to further in the east bay almost 3 years ago but I still drive all the way to Sala Thai for a satisfying meal. I also work in Santa Clara but make the drive here on my lunch break, yes, I only have an hour lunch. I always crave the great food and have to have it, I actually drove there for lunch today. The owner and [one of] her daughters are always so friendly. I believe in supporting family businesses.

The best thai food in Fremont
THIS IS THE THAI PLACE TO GO. My wife and I found this place when they first opened and love it to this day. She's part thai and high picky about her authentic food. 1st off the cook Gina is one of the most caring and proactive owner I know towards her guest. Since the years they have upgraded a great deal of the lights and decor.
As the food since day one the quality has been consistant and have always recommended this place to anyone who's looking for some Thai food. I love their angel chicken wings, and crab fried rice is to die for. Every once in a while we would get the chicken larb and papaya salad. They always ask how hot do you want it and we love it give it to us authentic since the mild and med always too americanized for the weaklings. The yellow chicken panag is always just off the hook. Their chicken basil for a lunch special is always a favorite of mine.
The best part is even if it's close to their closing time about 9:10 PM and beyond and your there they will still have the great service unlike those chain restaurants since it's run by employees.
Enjoy!

Good food and good service. Took me a while to find out what what dishes stood out. But one that did is the fried fish w/ basil. OMG so good. Crispy outside and nice and flaky not dry fish in the middle. and the sauce is just wow. and to top it off.. the fried basil is just wow.
so if you come here try the fried fish w/ basil ( i forgot the name, too hard to remember) but it was great.
I've been here a few times. The food is your typical Thai food. There isn't really anything outstanding about this place. There seems to only be about two servers or at least it seems that way since I've seemed to have ended up with the same servers all the times I've come here for dinner. They're very friendly people though. The one guy that works here is a bit weird but that's besides the point...he does his job very well.
Here's what I've tried already:
Kao Pad (fried rice) - this one is very good. But one time it came out somewhat burnt.
Shrimp in a Sleeping Bag - it's just shrimp rolled in a wonton wrap...there's nothing special about it
Chicken Satay - i've had better at Banana Island in Daly City. The chicken tasted a bit too mushy.
Tom Yum Gai - soup is delish! definitely will open up your nose (depending on how spicy you choose)
Tom Kha Gai - this soup is also very tasty. Similar to tom yum gai but has coconut broth instead
Pad See Eiw - these flat noodles are good. But again, taste like any other noodle dish at Thai restaurants
Pineapple Fried Rice - your typical dish. Wasn't bad but wasn't the greatest either.
Pla Rad Prik - this is a fried rex (fish) in a garlic sauce...this was all right.
Pla Sa Won - this is the steamed rex which is a bit better than the fried one because there's a slight tang to your taste buds...they add lemon juice to the sauce.
Panang Fish - tihs is a curry dish with rex fish. I didn't enjoy the sauce as much as the mussamun.
Chicken Mussamun - i really enjoyed this dish. I just love mussamun..anything with coconut milk is yum!
Fried Banana with ice cream - typical dessert
Mango with sticky rice - wow, this is sooo good! I always order this dessert whenever it's available. The only thing about this place is that they pour the condensed milk all over the sticky rice which over sweetens the entire dessert. But it's still yum if you can remove the excess sauce!
To sum it up, I'd come back here b/c it's close by to where I live and it satisfies my hunger when I'm craving for some Thai! :)

We usually come here about once a month, and it is very good. Truthfully, we never realized how good a service the service was until the owner's daughter told us one day how she always remembers us. Always??? Now, that made us feel like VIP!... But that aside, the food is very good and authentic, though, sometimes it can be a bit on the spicy side even when you inform them you want it to be the mildest of mild. My favorite is always their basil fried rice with angel wings and green curry chicken. Their fish dishes are also good... Give it a try.
I found this place through YELP! and with four stars how can you go wrong right? RIGHT!
The decor is nice for a weekend dinner. The food was excellent, it was my moms first officially trying THAI food and she LOVED it.
The service was a tad bit slow but very friendly. The place is somewhat small so if your sitting next to the front entrance your going to get a cold breeze (so don't!)
I will be going here again no doubt.
I saw some of the reviews for Salathai with low ratings and thought I should chyme in. I can understand that a place may give you a bad impression if you order the wrong thing the first time around so I encourage everyone to give this place a second shot.
Eating at Salathai is one of the things I miss most about working in fremont. Their lunch specials are delicious and authentic. Typical of most Thai places you can have them tailor the spiciness of your dish to your liking. The pad thai, yellow curry chicken, beef in oyster sauce , Tom Yum and Tom Kha are my personal favorites.
The lunch portions are perfect, the prices are beyond reasonable and the service is pretty fast. I'll definitely be going here again the next time I'm in town.

DJ me picked this spot for dinner one night. Excellent. This is the best Thai food I've had. i think the curry was a four, but since we were a group of people who are more adventurous than I, the table was covered with food, the crab fried rice was awesome, the coconut rice with ice cream - wow. What else was ordered, a lot of seafood, coconut soup. I have been bugging DJ me to go back, but we haven't made it there yet, boo for me going to Stockton today. The service was good and no one raised a fuss when we sat there talking past closing time. Everyone had a good time and raved about the food.
*****update**********
Mom wanted to go to the container store and ended up coming this way. Of course, I got a birthday dinner, I choose here. Yummy!! New people normally equals new food choices. I had the crab fried rice and curry again, mom picked, pad thai, shrimp in a sleeping bag and peak gai tod (deep fried wings in a sweet garlic sauce, these really were the hit of the night). My mom keep raving about the sauce on the wings, we ate a lot. Mom said the pad that was good, but the place she goes to in stockton might just be a little better. The people who worked there sat down for a meal at the table next to us and I feel bad because I must have been staring really hard...he offered to let me try some. I am just curious, they had sweet eggs, fried rice with fried chicken on top and beef and green in a red sauce of some sort. I didn't take anything, but I appreciated the gesture. Mom had the iced thai coffee and that was good, we both agreed it just needed a little kahlua to make it perfect. We had a good time and then rolled ourselves over to the shopping center to do some damage!

found this place through yelp... i sent my bf here first as my guinea pig and guinea pig left stuffed and happy ( = so the bf took me here last week while i was in the bay area and i left stuffed and happy ( = i chose the pad eggplant from their lunch special menu while my bf got the basil fried rice. both were really delicious~ i asked for medium spice, it wasn't spicy though... so i'll prolly get it more spicy next time. i thought the interior was a lil' dark, but it doesn't bother me. the service... the girl was nice and friendly. the guy was meh... -_- seemed like he didn't want to be there, he was just blah... oh well, whatever... the place is close to where my bf lives, i really enjoyed the food, so i'll be back for sure ( =
Yes, Sala Thai is special, and I'll tell you why:
Lunch was amazing! We ordered 2 of their lunch specials*: Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles (with pork) and both were the best I've had of each respective dish anywhere in the bay area. The drunken noodles had the perfect amount of spice and flavor, with sauteed red and green peppers, onions, and pork. The pad thai was also a decent size, with 4 prawns, fried tofu, bits of egg, and green onions. Both cost just under $7.00, and were big enough to share.
The service was also great--water was refilled twice and the food only took about ten or so minutes to come out. (It wasn't that busy right around 2pm).
The interior decor is a bit cluttered, but there are fresh flowers on each table and dark wood throughout, adding a cozy touch to my new favorite Thai restaurant.
*Lunch specials (basically $1.00 off certain dishes) run from 11am-3pm.

Solid Thai food with great service.
Started with a really nice fried fish cake (Tod Mun Pla) and rounded out the meal with orders of Panang Beef Curry and Beef Pad See Ew (chicken is soooo boring). The Panang Beef was blessed with an excellent spicy/sweet curry, but we had to pick out several bay leaves, which was a minor annoyance. Pad See Ew was also good but I've never really had an "amazing" version of this dish, if you know what I mean. We ended with some deep-fried ice cream that had a cake-y batter around the ice cream and a perfectly fried and crunchy panko breading.
Food was delicious and arrived promptly, and the service was on point, so I'd recommend this place if you're hungry and need your food fast.

Lunch Review
Came here yesterday (Saturday) afternoon for a little lunchtime thai.
My cousins have raved about this place for awhile, but I finally got a chance to check it out myself (with my cousins of course).
We had a LOT of food: beef and chicken satay, papaya salad, tom yun gai, chicken pad thai, pad kee mao, what I believe to be the crispy fish with sweet garlic sauce, and the beef panang. There were four adults and one kid... and we barely finished everything. (We are all really hungry, so it was quite a bit of food).
I enjoyed all the dishes... though if I had to complain... I'd say the papaya salad was a little bland, the crispy fish was a little greasy (but my cousins said that it's usually a lot better), and I've had better pad thai. Other than that... the food was good, the beef panang had a nice kick.
I'd definitely come back here again.

Been here twice. Their pad thai is the best I have ever had. It's flavorful and has good texture. I haven't tried anything else here yet. Would recommend coming here.
Sala Thai and Sala Thai 2 (see my other review)....best Thai in Fremont hands down. I found Sala Thai on yelp...and signed up for yelp shortly after, so this restaurant has a special place in my heart. :)
Sala Thai has a slight edge over Sala Thai 2 in my opinion...but #2 is right down the street from my work.

With its lack of representation for Thai cuisine, it's undoubtedly a four for Fremont standards. I'd go back in a heartbeat next time I'm in town.
Service was quick and straightforward--while not overly friendly, it also wasn't aloof--expect to be in and out. But the food was good and cheap with perfect portions.
Do check the specials and board for items not on the menu; I was glad to find out that they started serving brown rice. Tofu is used as a subsitution for vegetarian items, but beware the infamous oyster sauce. I was satisfied with my usual dish of pra ram, while my friend enjoyed his beef dish enough that I've convinced him to add Sala Thai to his regular restaurant rotation of fast food joints and Hooters.

Maybe I'm missing something bc I read the great reviews here and my little sister and mom love this place but I've had way better thai food elsewhere. I think the hallmark of so-so thai food is that it's bland and greasy when it should be spicy and light. We ordered the Pad kee mao (super greasy though i appreciated the amount of veggies), the chicken curry (they let the potatoes cook down to a thick bland soup) and some eggplant basil chicken dish that was actually pretty good. I think the best part of the meal may have been the Tom Yum Soup (clean lemony tasting broth with chicken, seafood, mushrooms). Mango sticky rice was good but the rice was drowned in coconut milk thus making most things taste good. Price wise i thought it was typical for a thai place but their service was excellent. I guess I'd re-try this place just to get a better sense of their other dishes.
The most authentic Thai restuarant in town! You will NOT be disappointed with it's selection and quality of dishes. The restuarant is family-owned, so you can always count on their consistency. Some of my favorites are the garlic chicken wings, duck curry, panang fish curry, chicken fried rice, and roti. Be ready for a wait on weekends and evenings!
We usually go on a Friday night with the in-laws. The food here is good, but it's not the best Thai that I've had. For Thai, I love when the portions are huge because leftovers are the best! However, at Sala, there's never any leftovers... boo. Okay, so for the actual food... we've had the satay, fried calamari, lots of different curries, a pork loin thingy, lots of different noodles, but hands down, their tom kha gai is the BEST I have ever had. But, the father in law doesn't really like coconut too much, so we always go for the tom yum. Overall, very homey feeling and service is good. Oh yeah, the fried banana and coconut ice cream is heaven, and the tea is awesome too!
I have been frequenting this location for about 5 years now and it is easily in my top 5 Thai Restaurants. The location is a bit hidden but inside lays some of the best Thai food I've tasted.
The service here is great! The decor is perfect for a nice date, family meal, or just having some good times with friends. Overall it is clean, tidy, and throws off a nice warm feeling.
The menu is thick with several authentic Thai dishes. My favorites are the Curry Dishes because they actually are the real deal. Many places lack in that area. The satay is the best I've had. They have a really nice Seafood Curry combo which is to die for. It's a big pot of sea food delight, as I call it lol, and is served with a nice Curry/Coconut combo.
Really I could go on and on about the food here and how wonderful it is. I know this location has won a few awards in the past. A lot of those being the top Thai Restaurant in the Tri-Valley.
I have since moved from the area but I still make a trip from Oakland to Fremont to get my Sala Thai on. Thats how good i think this place is!
